THE VISTA TIMES From the

Principal’s Desk

It has been close to two years since the outbreak of the coronavirus. Students and staff have had to make adjustments to prevent school-based transmissions and they have shown to be highly adaptable; keeping the learning going despite the restrictions imposed at the various stages in the battle against the pandemic. As we brace ourselves to learn and work in a post-pandemic Singapore, how would that scenario look like? For sure, it will be uncertain and constantly changing. As a school, what should our focuses be to ensure our students can continue to thrive and do well? From the lessons gleaned during the initial circuit breaker to the various phased reopenings, we know that students need to be able to take ownership of their learning, be disciplined and self-directed. This is evident as the school pivoted between home-based learning and physical schooling on several occasions. They also need to possess a growth (or abundance) mindset and be savvy and discerning in using technology in navigating the various digital platforms for their learning. They must also be students of good character, able to embrace diversity and empathise with others. With lesser opportunity to socialise, collaboration and teamwork are still key skillsets that they would need to have and muster. Hence, we have also revisited and refined the school key programmes/activities to develop students into “Self-directed Learners, Gracious and Confident Leaders, Tech-savvy Creators and Balanced Individuals” at the end of their primary education with us. In this issue of “The Vista Times”, we will continue to highlight some of the programmes/ activities that we have provided to our students despite restrictions imposed by the safe management measures. Our teachers, as caring frontline heroes, will continue to strive to provide learning experiences which are as “rich and authentic” as possible for our students in order to achieve our desired student outcomes.

Besides the staff, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for your understanding and support during this challenging period. Lastly, we would like to wish our P6 students all the best as they embark on their next stage of learning next year. We are proud to have provided each and every one of them with a firm foundation to take on the greater challenges ahead.

Students expressed gratitude through Teachers’ Day Celebration. Students learnt what Gratitude is on SLS before penning them in SLS, Padlet, “Thank You ‘Cher” website or expressing their gratitude and thanks in other forms. Alumni are informed via email and Facebook to pen their appreciation via Padlet (http://go.gov.sg/nvtps) or Thank You ’Cher (https://thankyoucher.edu.sg/#explore_map). Appreciation notes from the students and alumni are collated into a Gratitude Wall and displayed along a corridor. positive mindsets within our school-wide community. We kickstarted two initiatives, namely Wonderful Wednesdays and Terrific Thursdays. In North Vista, we believe in starting the day right. Every morning via Zoom, enriched stories of persevering Vistalites are shared. These serve to inspire our students and to affirm our teachers for their continued efforts in encouraging our Vistalites.

On Terrific Thursdays, a clip on promoting positive mindset is broadcasted during our pre-assembly programme. It aims to introduce students to the power of adopting a positive mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset. In the spirit of “Catch Them Doing Right” (CTDR), teachers lead by example as Growth Mindsetter Teachers. They encourage students to listen attentively to the weekly sharing.

Over 200kg of paper and plastics were collected. Clean plate campaign was held over 2 weeks to encourage students to finish their food. Each plate would translate into $1 donated by the sponsor of the programme to the needy. We counted 9568 clean plates in total.

Through the incorporation of Formative Assessment during lessons, students were introduced to the ‘Traffic Light’ system and the shifting of index numbers on the whiteboard. Using these 2 tools, PE teachers gave feedback to the students after each lesson so that they were able to work on their weaknesses in the following lessons. This also enabled the teachers to plan more appropriate activities based on the level of proficiency of individual student or class.

Physical Education The Sports and Wellness Enrichment Programme is for selected students from Primary 1 to Primary 4 cohort. The school partnered the National Healthcare Group (NHG) to strengthen students’ total well-being. Students learnt skills during the weekly Sports and Wellness Enrichment Programme to make better nutrition choices and to stay physically active. During the physical activity component, students were introduced to a variety of aerobic activities and different games or sports.

Factual Fluency

Factual fluency activities are widely practised in our school where every P3 & P4 student gets to review his proficiency in the Math concepts previously learnt. A checklist is given to each student at the start of each term for students to record their points for the various math skill. Math Star Award certificates would also be awarded to students with outstanding performance at the end of each term. Factual fluency champions from P4-1

School Core Values : Respect • Resilience • Responsibility • Integrity • Care • Harmony
