With all of the new trendy apartments being built downtown, one would think they are hot commodities that are being snatched up by any available renter, right? Wrong! Annika Larson spells out how rent in Indy is too damn high for folks to afford and how these rental properties may not be the best thing for the city in the long run. PENCE STRIKES OUT ON CIVIL RIGHTS

enry Chadwick, an English born historian and creator of baseball’s box score, used the letter “K” to denote a strikeout in the scorebook because it was the last letter in “struck” — as in “struck out.” He used that last letter because it seemed to him more memorable than the other letters in that phrase, and more than 100 years later, every scorer uses a “K” to mark a strikeout. For hitters, the only thing worse than a swing and a miss at strike three is when that strike is called by the umpire without the hitter swinging at all. This is known as being “struck out looking,” and it’s noted in the scorebook as a backward K. It’s embarrassing. If you have to go down, go down swinging, right? Civil rights expansion in Indiana went down on Tuesday. And it went down on a backward K.

MICHAEL LEPPERT EDITORS@NUVO.NET Michael Leppert is a public and governmental affairs consultant in Indianapolis and writes about politics, government and anything else that strikes him at IndyContrariana.com.

circumstances. The hearing featured an evenly distributed three hours of testimony from the public and ninety minutes of committee discussion for all to see and hear. And while I am no fan of bills dying behind closed doors in caucus, he was as open and honest about the situation as possible. More importantly, he was realistic about the likelihood of the expansion’s passage in the future, aptly describing it as “inevitable.” Speaker Bosma hasn’t even had his chance at bat, and the death of Senate Bill 344 symbolizes the end of the inning. He apparently won’t be getting that chance this year — and that seems to be just fine with him. And so the first half of the civil rights session ended Wednesday. There will be no expanded rights passed this year, though more than ever before admit that its passage is only a matter of time. It is also doubtful that the legislature will suffer much as a result of the inaction. And in this case, it is easy to

understand why. Pence did not lead on the issue. Period. He owns the legislature’s divisiveness. He owns the state’s lack of direction. And for those on the evangelical side of the debate who are celebrating, the governor didn’t stand strong for them, either. He passively let them win a victory that’s only temporary. Pence took strike three. His bat is still firmly planted on his shoulder. It’s what every baseball or softball parent teaches a child not to do. So, thank you, Henry Chadwick, for giving us the backward K. American politics needed a new way to describe an innovative way to fail. n

WHAT HAPPENED? House Democrats still fighting for LGBT rights House Minority Leader Scott Pelath, (D-Michigan City), hasn’t given up on adding LGBT rights to Indiana legislation this year. Pelath believes the Senate has dropped the ball this session when it comes to LGBT rights with Senate Bill 344, and urged his fellow representatives not to do the same. SB 344 would have offered protections to gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals, but did not extend rights to transgendered people. Instead, it called for a legislative study committee on transgendered issues. The bill passed a Senate committee with a 7-5 vote, but was never called before the full Senate due to a lack of support by legislators. Pelath said he and the rest of the Democratic caucus will continue to look for opportunities to have this necessary discussion. 2016 ISTEP technical issues being addressed Recent tests of the system that gives the ISTEP exam uncovered some technical issues. The Indiana Department of Education said readiness tests were performed to determine if the vendor, school computers, and the network is able to handle the strain of thousands of students logging on to take ISTEP. The Department of Education said the issues have been diagnosed and fixes are being put in place to ensure a smooth testing process for 2016. A January 29 test saw more than 180,000 logins and more than 50,000 users logged in at the same time. Organizers believe on a typical day during Part 1 testing, only 4,000 students will be logged on at the same time. During Part 2 testing, they expect about 40,000 students to be testing at the same time. The department said it will work with schools and Pearson to prepare for the administration of the ISTEP. Schools with any questions or concerns should contact either Pearson, or the Indiana Department of Education’s Office of Student Assessment. Eric Holcomb to be next lieutenant governor The former Indiana Republican party chair is exchanging a run for the U.S. Senate for the state’s second-in-command chair. Gov. Mike Pence announced his decision to nominate Eric Holcomb as the next lieutenant governor during a press conference Tuesday. Holcomb would replace Sue Ellspermann who is resigning to pursue the top executive post at Ivy Tech Community College. Holcomb announced Monday he was withdrawing his name from the ballot for U.S. Senate. Holcomb was the first candidate to announce his run to replace retiring Sen. Dan Coats, a man for whom he had previously worked. Holcomb’s withdrawal leaves U.S. Reps. Todd Young and Marlin Stutzman as the remaining primary candidates for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate. Both the state Senate and House must approve Holcomb’s nomination as lieutenant governor on a majority vote. — AMBER STEARNS 6 NEWS // 02.10.16 - 02.17.16 // 100% RECYCLED PAPER // NUVO

Last year Downtown Indy projected downtown Indianapolis will have over 30,000 residential units with the majority of them being “amenity-rich” apartments.

How Indy’s rental boom leaves a lot of people at the curb

ou’ve probably noticed by now the apartment complexes popping up all over downtown Indianapolis. In the heart of the Wholesale District, off of Mass Ave, and along Virginia Avenue, residents are seeing new luxury apartment complexes appearing out of what seems like thin air. Many developers, investors, and city planners argue that this trend shows the immense growth that Indianapolis has gone through in the past five years. And while it’s true that people are flocking to reside in the city in increased numbers — a sort of urbanization — it’s not at the rate at which most people tend to believe. By the end of 2014, downtown Indianapolis apartment complexes had an average rate of 8.9 percent vacancy. MPF Research has reported that housing demand in Indianapolis is outpacing supply by a theoretical 450 units. However, occupancy rates rose only a mere 0.3 points in the third quarter of 2015. Why the discrepancy between high demand for housing in the city but low growth in occupancy rates? Maybe it’s the lack of understanding what most millennials and the working

middle class need. Or perhaps it’s the price-gouging that luxury apartment complexes impose on their tenants (extra fees for parking, pool access, gym access, pay-by-load laundry rooms, glamorous lobbies, full balconies, a bigger bathroom, etc.). After all, these apartments are supposedly aimed at the top 1 percent of millennials that are making around $90,000 a year. The reality of Indianapolis demographics is that the average household income is $63,865 at the median age of 34 years old. Under the age of 25, the median income rests at $28,553. That’s not to say there aren’t people who earn the top dollars here in Indy, but they just don’t exist in high enough numbers to fill up all of the amenity-rich apartments that are currently built — and have yet to be built — in 2016. Instead, most people — specifically the younger demographic — currently living in Indianapolis (or looking at Indianapolis as a prospective future home) look toward the neighborhoods directly outside of the city, such as the Old Northside, Fountain Square, and Woodruff Place. The luxury apartment boom actually makes certain parts of the city unattainable for most people, specifically the Wholesale District and Monument Circle. Development of

these living spaces is supposed to cater to residents who wish to make direct downtown living a reality, but high rent turns people away. So, direct downtown neighborhoods like the Wholesale District and Mass Ave aren’t seeing the vast influx of new residents and high rates of growth that was projected — instead, neighborhoods directly outside of the city are seeing growth because it’s the only affordable way to attain the vibe of downtown living. Let’s give a hypothetical — but plausible — situation to illustrate this housing gap. A full-time student who works part-time, making around $800 a month, budgeting to pay around $550 in rent (not including utilities) has zero housing options in downtown Indianapolis. So, this student looks toward neighborhoods outside of the city and even then probably has to take on a roommate in order to afford housing. This is typical for a student. It’s a part of the lifestyle of the “ramen noodle” generation and most people have been there, done that. But this situation applies to a bigger portion of Indianapolis residents than college kids. With the median income for 25 year olds and younger at a generous estimate of $28,000, that’s a monthly average income of around

THIS WEEK

$2,333. When millennials budget the general cost of living and utility pricing, that leaves little for rent (amenity-rich apartment complexes average roughly $1,000 per month for a studio apartment). In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median rent in Indianapolis between 2010-2014 was $920. Rent is expected to rise 3.8 percent nationwide in 2016. The options for public housing are limited in the city, and public housing isn’t the easiest route to take for residency. Partners in Housing and Indianapolis Housing Agency are the two major public housing programs in the city and these programs have long wait-lists. Along with that, these programs have a limited number of properties that are exactly downtown. For those with extreme income issues, public housing can be a saving grace. But public housing is, intentionally, not for everyone. It’s not for those who don’t qualify for Section 8 housing, and it’s not for those who can’t wait a long time for housing. In the past five years, there has never been a demand for amenity-rich housing — there has been a need for affordability that allows residents to live comfortably while still investing in the downtown marketplace. Instead of focusing on amenityrich housing, developers should be looking at the neighborhoods of Indianapolis where most people choose to settle. Kevin Kastner, founder and administrator of Urban Indy and a specialist in urban revitalization in Indianapolis, hopes to see the city reinvest in already-built homes and businesses. “On a case-by-case basis, there are abandoned homes needing to be remodeled in neighborhoods that have great potential. [Luxury] apartments are made to attract people and not keep them. Whereas investment in preexisting structures provides the city with a historical investment and more affordable

now they will pose a design issue for the city. How does a city recover from rushed and trendy architecture? In time, these buildings are either torn down and the land is redeveloped, or these buildings simply become vacant, sold and abandoned. “If the city insists on new residential developments, it would be great to see owner-occupied condos or something of the sort. Owning is much better than renting because it’s an investment that you can live in, especially for families. It facilitates long-term resi“[Luxury] apartments are made to dencies,” Kastner says. and will threaten the infrastructure of the roads and alleyways of the neighborhood itself. Ransom Place has already seen a big influx of activity with the growing population of its close neighbor, IUPUI. The current seven-block grid of the neighborhood simply cannot support large living structures. With this proposal, developers hope to capitalize on the growing IUPUI student body while risking the safety and historical security of a neighborhood made up of primarily African-American, disabled and elderly residents. These developments are similar to others around the IUPUI area, like 1201 Indiana Avenue and 9 on Canal. The rent is high, starting at around $1000 a month. This creates another area for transient residency, high vacancy, and fast development. Paula Brooks, long-time resident and spokesperson for Ransom Place Matters, an alliance dedicated to preserving the cultural integrity of the neighborhood as well as stopping this development, said “Nobody is thinking about the people that live here. My family has been here since the 1930s. Our neighborhood is small. Students and young professionals are transient; we’re not. Our neighborhood is not someplace that needs to be overhauled. We aren’t against development, but whatever development is built needs to enhance our neighborhood and not destroy it.” The concern here, as in so many other development cases, is over bad investment and high rent. Brooks says, “This is Indianapolis. We aren’t New York or Chicago. Those cities developed over hundreds of years. We can’t expect the same will happen to us in ten. Now is a crucial time to be smart in developing, not throw money to trends.” n

SEX FOOD

BY K A TE BRA G G EDITORS@NUVO.NET

njoying food and having sex are arguably the two greatest parts of being alive. Since the days of our earliest ancestors, humans have found ways to combine the uniquely sensual and satisfying experiences of eating and boinking. Whether we’re rationalizing how gorging on chocolate will contribute to an improved sexual experience or talking our honey into bringing honey into the bedroom, we come by this obsession naturally. Some food excites us because it causes a chemical reaction in our bodies; some, because the mere sight of seeing the individual we desire consume it is sexual and suggestive. Celebrate Valentine’s Day — which, come on, really is a day for getting weird and calling it romantic — by embracing the combo, Indy-style. (EDITOR’S NOTE: We’ve included location info for the places Kate mentions in the article, but we’re well aware that there are tons of spots in Central Indiana to purchase chocolate, wine and the like. Since print space is limited, you can easily find more retailers and restaurants at nuvo.net, some of which may well be within walking distance of your boudoir.)

e know — nothing’s really been absolutely proven to be the edible equivalent of ED treatments or a long session of foreplay. But even though an element of the placebo effect might be at work here, some foods certainly might help with the body’s chemistry when sex is on the schedule. Other foods are simply sexy by virtue of their shapes, amirite?

DRINKS COFFEE AND TEA

HONEY

RED WINE

Caffeine addicts rejoice: This stimulant accelerates the heart rate while increasing blood flow. Better yet, studies suggest that sipping coffee may even put women in the mood. “Sex and coffee. Bring it,” was Rachel Brown’s reaction, of Mile Square Coffee Roastery. Her drink of choice would be a cappuccino, due to the seductive blend of smoky espresso and rich, creamy milk. So skip the bar and bring your date to the roastery for a date that’s stimulating in more ways than one. Into chai, perhaps? Ginger, cloves and cinnamon all work together to heat things up literally and by getting the blooding flowing just a bit faster. Looking for a good night’s rest after the big event? We get it, it’s a party tonight, but you still have to work tomorrow. Grab a chai latte, dirty chai latte, or blended chai latte at for an experience that won’t keep you up any later than you want to be.

Historically, the word honeymoon was inspired by the honey mead that was given to newlyweds, proving that honey always had something to do with the birds and the bees. Boron, found in honey, regulates sex hormones and provides a natural energy boost, making for a stronger, more lasting experience. Drink honey mead like your randy ancestors of yore at New Day Craft Mead and Cider, which slings a bevy of year-round and seasonal meads featuring honey, such as South Cider and Washington’s Folly.

Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and all things ritual madness, ecstasy and wild abandon was the o.g. orgy master. He knew that red wine really got the party started, thanks to being packed with antioxidants that boost blood flow and circulation. Lisa Bailey, of Louie’s Wine Dive suggests their Argyle Pinot Noir in particular, for its approachability, pair-ability, and fantastic notes of cherry and earthiness.

THE CLASSICS CHOCOLATE

OYSTERS

Chocolate is the mainstay of aphrodisiac offerings and bedroom play for a reason: Legendarily associated with the Aztec goddess of fertility and traditional carnal rituals, chocolate seduced the senses of famous lovers from Casanova to Johnny Depp (go watch Chocolat and then try not to have sex with a truffle, we dare you) for centuries. Phenylethylamine is a stimulant found in chocolate, responsible for warm, fuzzy feelings of contentment, excitement and desire. The best part of chocolate (if you can pick just one) is how seamlessly it lends itself to pairing up with other potent sexual stimulants. Figs, cherries, strawberries, honey, pomegranate — you name it and chocolate will probably make it taste like a delicacy (avocado brownies, ‘nuff said). The Best Chocolate in Town proves that chocolate is the ultimate indulgent aphrodisiac with their dizzying array of truffles. Varieties include Cabernet Balsamic, Dark & Stormy, Espresso Cardamom, Fiery Pepper, Port Wine & Fig, Dark Strawberry Cheesecake, and Seasonal Dark Cherry. Elizabeth Garber of The Best Chocolate in Town believes that chocolate has a psychological impact when eaten: “You do release different endorphins, so there are chemical reactions that make you feel happy.” In addition to their decadent truffles, she suggests truffle pie, suggestive and delicious, featuring chocolate mousse and heavy whipped cream, perfect for two people to take home and enjoy privately. However, for those still wooing, Best Chocolate in Town will be open and serving spicy hot chocolate on Valentine’s Day.

Cliché? Sure. But oysters could approach the real deal thanks to amino acids and zinc which improve fertility, sex drive, and increased production of sex hormones. Oysters have been considered both a sensual experience and a bed-rocking booster since the Romans, but their biggest ally came in the form of the great lover Casanova. Casanova was rumored to feast on 50 oysters each morning. Maybe oysters are the real cause of “spring fever,” as they are most potent and effective in the spring, which is also mollusk breeding season. Those slurping, squishy sounds, though — and people say that the sounds of sex are unappealing. The absolute craziest thing to know about oysters is that many scientists believe that they are vegan friendly due to their lack of a central nervous system, suggesting that they are akin to plant life! Recess offers oysters from Prince Edward Island (the caraquet) and oysters from British Columbia (the kusshi) through its renowned raw menu.

THE BEST PART OF CHOCOLATE (IF YOU CAN PICK JUST ONE) IS HOW SEAMLESSLY IT LENDS ITSELF TO PAIRING UP WITH OTHER POTENT SEXUAL STIMULANTS.

SPICES AND OLIVE OIL Certain spices and oils have quite the lurid reputation, steeped in historical scandal. Nutmeg has been considered an aphrodisiac since early Hindu cultures lauded it for its warming properties and notoriety in stimulating sexual appetites (not to mention ability to sweeten the breath in the era of pre-modern dentistry). Ginger is reminiscent of a phallus and stirred the imaginations of many a young maiden — while also increasing blood flow and body temperature. Famous French courtesan Madame du Barry made ginger even more notorious by legendarily dosing it to her lovers, claiming that it would increase their desire and pleasure. (More extreme and adventurous types, look up the ancient practice called “figging.” Whoa.) Cardamom and coriander both played important roles in the Arabian nights as warming and aromatic aphrodisiacs that increased blood flow. Olive oil (a handy lubricant when you are getting down with phallic food and find yourself in need of something to ease the journey) was believed to be the original Viagra, causing a perceived burst of male virility upon ingestion. FLIRTMOJI

Intrigued by food in the bedroom but maybe not quite ready to start putting edibles in or around your unmentionables? We suggest starting small. Introduce bumping yummies with your uglies through a sext message. Flirtmoji are downloadable emoticons that graphically suggest things like: “Hey, I want to lick chocolate off your body, you cool with that?”

VEGGIES

ARTICHOKE

ARUGULA

Myth has it that upon being scorned, Zeus punished the object of his affection by turning her into a thistle. This story combined with the act of intimately peeling apart the layers to reach the secret center together have both lead to the artichoke being considered one of the oldest aphrodisiacs. Treat your date to a riveting evening of sports and the notoriously delicious spinach artichoke dip at Chatham Tap.

You thought arugula was just kale’s spicy cousin, didn’t you? Wrong. Arugula has been documented as an aphrodisiac since the first century A.D., due to being rich in minerals and antioxidants which block libido-busting environmental contaminants. Let’s be real though, there is nothing sexy about chewing on a piece of raw greenery together (although replacing your tickling feather for the surprising tease of a bunch or arugula leaves could get interesting). Instead, allow Napolese to smother it on a bed of doughy heaven, gorgonzola, roasted onions and winter squash on the Widow Jane pie.

PROTEINS

ASPARAGUS AND AVOCADOS

HOT CHILIES

TRUFFLES

Nothing says sexy like green, bulbous fruit, right? You can thank Vitamin E for any horndog properties these might bring to the table (and the sheets), which triggers sexual responses such as swelling and natural lubrication. Why not take the next step, then? Chocolate and whipped cream are so 1980s; avocado mash is where it’s at! The vegan chefs at Three Carrots in the Indianapolis City Market use avocados in most of their dishes and they serve their entire menu take-out style, so you won’t have to worry about weird looks when you head home to smear it all over each other.

Spicy, zesty — sexy? Hot chilies have a rep for bringing heat to the bedroom, literally, due to the chemical capsaicin, which increases circulation and sends your nerve endings into overdrive. Your options for eating something spicy on Valentine’s Day are seemingly endless. Go for the classic and elegant extra spicy shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo Steak House or really change it up and start your morning adventurously with the spicy biscuits and gravy at Biscuits Café. For the truly fearless, capsaicin is a main ingredient in many warming lubricants so go straight for direct application — if you’re into feeling like your junk is burning off, of course.

Truffles provide zero aphrodisiac components and we certainly don’t recommend wasting something so unbelievably expensive in the bedroom. However, it does get mentioned as an aphrodisiac simply because feeding truffles to a potential partner is sure to convince them that you are a person of luxury, a person willing to throw caution and cash to the winds in order to provide them with over-the-top pleasure. Make your way to Taste Café and Marketplace for the truffled egg toast with swiss, asparagus and truffle oil for a pungent and savory experience that weighs in at an affordable $10.

SALMON

HOT DOGS

For those who want to eat sensually but still feel good about themselves (and understuffed enough to do something about their supercharged urges) salmon is packed full of omega-3 fatty acids, which keep sex-hormone production at its peak in both men and women. Locally Grown Gardens, a visual, tactile and auditory explosion, has just what the doctor ordered with their much-raved-about grilled salmon filet. Locally Grown Gardens also offers a veritable ménages à trios of sexual super foods: After your filet, split a cup of stimulating coffee and a slice of suggestive peach pie.

Hot dogs are all about the visual appeal, baby. You know what you think when you watch someone slowly eat a wiener — that looks delicious! At King David Dogs, an Indy original, they are a treat for the eyes and the gut. Try the Hula Dog with pineapple relish if you’re looking for sweater smelling breath, among other things.

DURIAN

POMEGRANATES

WATERMELON

Are you familiar with this stinky fruit whose aroma is often compared to the scent of rotting meat? Sexy, huh? When prepared, durian lovers swear that the creamy texture and surprisingly fresh flavor are worth holding your nose for. Aside from the taboo of sharing something so rarely enjoyed, durian is purported to promote estrogen production and increase fertility. Enjoy the creamy, delicious fruit innards with a durian tropical shake from Saigon Restaurant Indy.

There is something aggressively sexual about the inside of a pomegranate when you bust it open. Pomegranates are super sexy foods because they don’t just give you weird feelings when you look at them, they also double as an aphrodisiac by increasing sensitivity and help to naturally combat erectile dysfunction. Nicky Blaine’s whips up a mean pomegranate martini in a luxurious atmosphere, if you care to test the theory.

Watermelon makes for a sweeter smelling and tasting you (let’s call ‘em “unicorn genitals”) which is a pretty appealing side effect, but more importantly, the phytonutrient citrulline increases nitric oxide while relaxing blood vessels quickly, leading to faster, more powerful arousal. Watermelon = nature’s Viagra. Check out the Taqueria Guanajuato restaurant within the grocery store of the same name, or their food truck for a splash of watermelon juice. (And combine with a spicy taco for wham-bam-thankyou-ma’am of a suggestive and arousing meal)

FRUITS NUTS ALMONDS

BANANAS

CHERRIES

Almonds have been a symbol of fertility since Biblical times, so maybe these aren’t the snack of choice for the unattached paramour. You absolutely must try the toffee almond scone at Rene’s Bakery, even if fertility isn’t your present goal. Risk it and take extra precautions later. If you want something a little more savory, a little more sit-down, woo your date over the emiliomiti plates at Spoke & Steele, featuring cheese served with Amelia’s hearth bread, membrillo and marcona almonds.

These fun fruits don’t just suggest sexuality visually, they also deliver a punch of potassium, which improves muscle strength and makes for straight-up orgasmic contractions. You think it’s a coincidence that the word “bananas” also means “losing your mind?” Combine the suggestive naughtiness of eating a cupcake and a kick of potassium with a Banana-rama cupcake from The Flying Cupcake. (You’ll win extra points with your date because buying one of these to split is also pretty darn cute.)

Suggestive and legit, these little sex bombs are packed full of feel-good vitamins, potassium, magnesium, folic acid, iron and melatonin and are also perfect food to bring into the bedroom for sexy snacking. Start popping those cherries already! Order a cherry pie or dutch cherry pie from My Sugar Pie for quick pick up of a suggestive, effective and outright delicious slice of gooey goodness that you can take home and do whatever you want with, or to.

FOOD IN THE B E D R O O M

T

he bevy of edible lubricants, powders, genital-shaped jellies and candy panties prove that the sex industry understands the human obsession to put our mouths where our — well, you get the picture. Like sex, eating food feels good, and requires us to get in touch with our primal nature. Introducing food in the bedroom can go much further than eating seductively or playfully, drizzling your partner(s) in food products, or even insertion of edibles into various bodily orifices. The world of kink is replete with people who get off on foodplay of many variances including eating chefmade food off of naked bodies, engaging in dirty, sticky food fights, and watching beautiful, robust women stuff themselves full. Here we take a playful stab at the world of foodplay — but if this is your thing or you think that it might be, go exploring — the world is quite literally your oyster. Your best bet for a riveting round of foodplay is to take a trip to the grocery store or farmers markets and pick up some fresh, locally sourced options. Hey, chemicals and growth hormones aren’t suggested for any type of consumption OR insertion. We suggest Pogue’s Run Grocer, Locally Grown Gardens, Wildwood Market or the Indy Winter Farmers Market.

CARAMEL SAUCE, CHOCOLATE SAUCE, MARSHMALLOW SAUCE, WHIPPED CREAM The sweet sauces and creams are all components of many people’s initial foray into the world of foodplay. It sounds oh-so-sexy to slowly and seductively lick something sweet off your lover’s body. Nope. Drizzle away, you basic bitches, but be prepared for the disgustingly sticky after effects, including but not limited to: Rodents in your bedroom, bugs in your sheets, stubborn stickiness in every single bodily crevice including your belly button, matted body hair, and a mutual shower full of awkward giggling and lamenting why that just wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be.

YUMMY UGLIES

CARROTS When your mom was telling you to eat your carrots because they were good for your eyesight, she left out that these vitamin sticks are also pretty rad for your unmentionables. Carrots are another of the suggestive and multipurpose foods that you can use as an aphrodisiac or as an implement of foreplay, if you can look past the knobs and weird hairy bits (that actually sounds familiar, really).

CUCUMBERS AND SQUASH

GRAPES, MANGO SLICES, STRAWBERRIES

We don’t really need to tell you what to do with these, right? What we will tell you is pop that sucker in the microwave for, oh, about 30 seconds and prepare to have your life changed. Just make sure you safely test the temperature before you get ahead of yourself.

These hand-held edibles are all perfect for seductively feeding to one another (especially when covered in chocolate), sweetening the natural ode de naughty bits, and best of all, not feeling too full for active fun after. But be advised, all of the above come with hazards, seeds in the teeth a la Pretty Woman, sticky residue on you, your sheets, your dog, you name it.

FINALLY: Eat whatever you want in the bedroom: The simple pleasure of a day spent naked in bed eating takeout Chinese food cannot be overstated. Foodplay is what you make of it. Get messy, use each other’s bodies as plates, and tell us how it goes! Pogue’s Run Grocer, 2828 E. 10th St., 426-4963, poguesrungrocer.org

ICE AND POPSICLES Dragging ice along your lover’s body invokes some seriously sexy images and tingles. We strongly encourage playing with ice, as the residue dries without any mess. Make sure to have a warm blanket nearby and turn off all fans because obviously, things are going to get cold. Popsicles are an entirely different experience. Like ice, they cool things down in a surprising and invigorating way, but sugar makes these chilly sexsicles sticky and infection-inducing. To each their own though: If the sultry image of watching someone slurp on a popsicle isn’t enough for you, adventurous souls have been known to foray into tingleinducing insertion.

A PAINT FETISH IN VIDEO

e In its brochure copy, this exhibit claims to be relevant to the Black Lives Matter Movement. But the exhibit does more than just inspire a discussion, though a worthy enough goal. There’s really great art here by African-American artists who are mostly new to me. One whom I haven’t heard of before is sculptor Keith Bullock, whose day job is as a welder. His “hobby” is making sculptures out of repurposed metal. The sculptures depicting head busts in “The Graduate” and “Life Splitting Headache” invoke the history of African sculpture with their slightly abstracted features. They might be viewed in the context of this exhibit as two ends of a continuum; the enormous achievement of Barack Obama on one end and the injustices and inequality still faced by many African-Americans on the other. (In this work, the depicted is quite literally carrying his head in his hands: a thin-fingered hand is the actual pedestal for the head.) You could certainly read anguish into the untitled grayscale drawing “Untitled” by Bruce Armstrong depicting a man with eyes closed and mouth wide open, amazing in its rich detail and dark sepia tones, a counterpart to Munch’s “The Scream.” Contrast that with “Voyage” which, with its Marcus Garvey Pan-African Flag colors and flag-like composition goes beyond hard-edge type abstraction with its upward movement of color and line toward the upper-right of the canvas, suggesting hope. Anthony Radford comes the closet to agitprop with his mixed media composition on board “Black Lives Matter” that makes an African mask out of the body of a vacuum component — where one of its two plastic eyes is shattered. Considering the “Hands up, Don’t Shoot” text and other assorted text collaged into this work, this very well could be an abstracted representation of Trayvon Martin. Saundrajo Holiday, the curator of this event, also had an acrylic on wood painting entitled “Sitting Colored,” depicting a woman seated on the floor, head crouched in her hands. The woman is depicted in all colors of the rainbow, against a black background. Is she in despair, you may ask or is she just rekindling her inner energies? There’s a rainbow spectrum of talent available to see in this exhibition; one to inspire and provoke thought, one not to miss, one that could just as easily be entitled Black Art Matters. — DAN GROSSMAN

t’s hardly a surprise to see wall projections or flat screens filling up museum walls as canvases. More surprising, perhaps, are the ways in which some artists are using video animation to explore their work in traditional mediums. Dutch artist Jacco Olivier uses short films to do just that. His subjects range from a girl on a beach adjusting her swimming suit to the gyrations of the galaxies, while his fusion of narrative and painterly abstraction recalls the work of Jackson Pollock and Stanley Kubrick. His exhibition Liquid Painting, Liquid Time opens at the IMA February 12. Olivier, 43, answered the following questions by email while at home in Amsterdam: NUVO: You describe yourself as a painter first and foremost. How did you come to use video animation to illustrate your paintings? JACCO OLIVIER: At the turn of the century I was making big paintings on which I could work for a very long time, painting layer over layer. If one part of the painting looked good, another part didn’t. I began to investigate that by taking photographs — slides, we weren’t digital yet — of the areas of the painting that I liked. Projecting those slides in the evenings in my studio I saw that they showed much more of what I am after than the paintings. So instead of the paintings I showed my slides. But a sequence of slides in a slide projector gives this annoying “tjick-tjick” sound. Fading the slides one into the other on a computer solved that problem and opened up a lot of possibilities. Suddenly I had something like an animation. An animation made from a painter’s perspective. NUVO: Some of your works involve sound. How does sound work in relation to your compositions? OLIVIER: I use sound for different reasons; sometimes a work needs sound to give a forward motion or a different direction to the narrative, or to add to the right atmosphere, or as clue between scenes. I found

myself using less and less sound though. NUVO: Would you describe Liquid Painting, Liquid Time as more of a retrospective or as an exhibition of new work? OLIVIER: Maybe more as a retrospective in the sense that it gives an overview. A museum show is a perfect opportunity to show older and newer works side by side. A gallery show is more about the newest work and about one or two ideas. With a museum show like this I can show works from 2006 next to works of 2016 which reveals more long-term themes and ideas. NUVO: Is there a particular work that you are showing in this exhibition that you are really excited about? OLIVIER: I am excited about all of them, but if I have to name one I think it would

The first few minutes are still figurative — planets and stars — but then it continues in abstract colors, dots and drips of paint, and it all still very much read[s] as a galaxy. I have lived out my paint fetish to the full for this work. But then again…I think my work “Transition” works very well as well, on a different level, as my first real moving painting instead of an animation film. In that sense every work on [display is] a special thing. NUVO: You said in an interview with Blouin Art Info that Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, and Ridley Scott are the filmmakers that you most admire. Can you tell me which films of theirs you most admire? OLIVIER: Like almost everybody else I really enjoyed The Shining from Kubrick, Blade Runner from Scott and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Just like the images of the Hubble telescope, [they are] all part of my canon I think, one way or another it will resonate through in my work probably. NUVO: What’s your newest project? I’m very excited about these opportunities. It’s proven that if you have good art on the walls in waiting areas, the perceived waiting time drops. Art can work on all kind of levels in those environments. NUVO: It occurred to me, thinking of your homeland and the major importance of The Netherlands in the Renaissance, that we might be on the verge of a renaissance in terms of how we look at motion pictures. I’m thinking of 3D headsets that are starting to come onto the market. Would you ever consider doing some kind of 3D film animation of your work? OLIVIER: I like the idea that we might be on a verge of a renaissance in terms of how we look at pictures. And maybe it is true measured on the incredible amount of pictures taken every second around the world. That must have an influence somewhere. But only time will tell. Regarding 3D; I have tried 3D but I prefer the painterly plane of 2D. The

w Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has been a Stephen Sondheim audience favorite since it premiered in 1979 and swept the Tony Awards. And for good reason. Setting aside any moral/social commentary that can be gleaned from it, the show has a dark but fascinating plot, bizarre characters, and intricate and exquisite music. I could break out the superlatives to describe Actors Theatre of Indiana’s production, but the bottom line is, it’s excellent — probably one of if not the best I’ve ever seen, and since Sweeney is a popular musical staple, I have seen my fair share. ATI presents one amazing voice after another in its deliciously macabre production. One element that sets this show apart is its location. The Studio Theater at Carmel’s Center for the Performing Arts resembles a black-box theater all grown up. From my vantage point in the front row, I had the disconcerting experience of actors being so close that I felt as if they were invading my personal space, which added to the surreal atmosphere. ATI maximizes its use of the small stage. One main set piece (scenic designer P. Bernard Killian) is multipurposed for every scene, embellished occasionally by a few chairs or tables. Don Farrell as Todd is downright ghoulish (the white face and exaggerated black eye makeup completing the characterization thanks to makeup designer Daniel Klinger). Judy Fitzgerald plays a perfect foil for Farrell’s insanity: a cheerful, motherly, practical woman who, without breaking character, is ready to take out Toby (Caleb Wertz) immediately after their moving duet “Not While I’m Around.” Director Richard J. Roberts makes Lovett and Todd stark contrasts: one inherently evil and unaware of it; the other crazy and all too aware of it. This emphasizes that Lovett is, in fact, the villain, not Todd. Another inspired turn is the placement of Todd’s victims in the theater’s ceiling grating toward the end—another satisfyingly eerie touch. The only quibble I have, which made me take off half a star, is that only about half the cast uses accents. I believe in all or nothing. It’s a Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves thing.

icholas Owens’ name has appeared in dozens of dance programs across the city, marking his place as a fixture in the Indianapolis dance world. Recently he was named a featured artist by the Arts Council of Indianapolis for its highlight of local African-American artists, Art & Soul. Owens is the co-founder (with his sister Vanessa) and former artistic director of Kenyettá Dance Company. He has also formed his own modern dance company, Nicholas Owens Dance Company. Between that and collaborating with nearly every dance entity in town he also teaches at the Indiana Ballet Conservatory, Dancer's Studio, and Iibada Dance Company. “The name ‘Nick Owens’ always comes up when I talk with people about dance in Indianapolis,” says Ernest DisneyBritton, the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ director of Grant Services & Arts Education and the chair for Art & Soul. Part of being a featured artist includes a guaranteed performance. Owens will be dancing along with Kenyettá and a slew of other partners in excerpts from last year’s Black Dance Matters concert, a new piece choreographed by Owens’ niece called “Mary Don’t You Weep,” and several other arrangements. “I think they are very relevant and needed at this time,” says Owens of the excerpts from Black Dance Matters concert. We spoke with him before the show about Indianapolis’ art world, diversity and maintaining an equilibrium in his artistic direction. NUVO: You are such a fixture in the Indy dance world. How have you grown in your dance journey? OWENS: After all these years I am still the artist I was to begin, but the elements that … were apart of my performance have all grown because of the spaces that I have been put in that have taught me so much about who I am as an artist. NUVO: How do you strike the balance between your artistic direction as an entertainer and as someone bringing

up conversations that need to happen in Indy? OWENS: I think a lot of time as artists we either find ourselves creating work that we feel is going to please the community versus creating something that is thought-provoking, relevant and educational. The balance end of it is important but at the same time I go back on the end of taking that extra step to kind of push audiences into that area of being left with something to remember, based off of not holding back on the artistic end of something I have created. NUVO: What does the Art & Soul project mean to the city and to you? OWENS: Art & Soul means we must celebrate as a community everything that we have accomplished as artists. And how we can take the time to reflect on the past and preserve what is needing to be shared with the community. So that I think it is very important for Art & Soul for art to continue recognizing these artists who are making an impact in the community because of what we do. So

being a part of that and being recognized as a featured artist is confirmation that we are included, and that history is not being forgotten. NUVO: How does dance bridge the gap between the arts and social justice? OWENS: Just like I have been saying — the movement versus the talking. It’s another way of bridging that space that people are afraid to tap into. You can have conversations about social justice things and usually in a crowd of people you have people back away or be afraid of talking and/or expressing how they really feel because they are not sure how to express that. I think that the arts, when it comes to dance, we are able to do that and push the envelope with how we are doing it … You can have more things to say about the way I was moving than the story I was telling … It’s that space of having to observe and — I don't want to say forced but having to be made more aware of that space, that void that separates. I think it brings us together … because it’s a different way of expressing. It would be fun for a poet to answer that question but in dance I feel like there’s really no boundaries as artists to hide that connection. You can keep pushing it. Just pushing, pushing, pushing it. People can’t do anything but watch or walk out. n

AN UNABASHED CATALOG OF GRATITUDE BY ROSS GAY Ross Gay’s newest collection of poems An Unabashed Catalog of Gratitude creates this force of transformation from the first poem, “To the Fig Tree on 9th and Christian.” The speaker is “Tumbling through the city in my mind without once looking up” isolated and lost in thoughts darkened by crime and loneliness. The poems in Gay’s book are plump with images of fertility, have a lyrical hum, and are littered with images of bees and wasps, savoring fruits of the fig, juice of mulberries, chortling with songbirds and robins. In “Ode to a Flute” SUBMITTED PHOTO the man and the flute are each a vessel of song, and “a flute lays / on its side / and prays a wind / might enter it.” It serves as instructions to the poet. Gay explores the writing process again in “Becoming a Horse”: “it was putting my heart to the horse’s that made me know / the sorrow of horses….Feel the small song in my chest / swell and my coat glisten and twitch.” The speaker faces sorrow and death in elegiac poems like “Spoon” and “Burial,” but the pages are full of vitality and reconstructed life shining through. In “The Opening” he uses a jeering flock of shrikes as a means to face himself. The syntax shifts, long lines sweep lively landscapes into twisting sentences exploring what “Myself was feeling” and what the poet points attention to; like the memory of a peach tree in spring, “when the tree’s myriad pink mouths unfurl / and blow kisses to everyone in sight.” The poems stay true to their disclosed desire, to weave honey from sorrow. In a world where emotions are sometimes left overgrown and untended, Gay continues to create delight from life’s mess and mistakes. He sees joy in the weeds. The poems in this collection thrive. — RACHEL SAHAIDACHNY For sale on amazon.com $14.36

About his own thwarted search for answers to the essential question of his life, Coates writes, “It began to strike me that the point of my education was a kind of discomfort, was a process that would not award me my own especial Dream, but would break all the dreams, all the comforting myths of Africa, of America, of everywhere, and would leave me only humanity in all its terribleness.” May we all have the determination and courage to experience such discomfort in (finally) facing the real issues surrounding race in America. If we fail to do this, we cannot survive. n

FAVORITE RUNNING SPOTS, TIPS FOR LOCAL MARATHONERS Where do the Indianapolis-based Olympic Trials qualifiers run? And what’s their advice to other Indianapolis-area marathoners (and aspiring marathoners) on conquering the distance?

WEBER

Favorite Running Locales: Southwest Way Park, Eagle Creek, Eagle Creek/Leonard Park Trails in Speedway, Canal Towpath, White River Trail, Fall Creek Trail and the downtown Canal path. ADVICE: “My advice for other Indy area marathoners is to remember that training is a process, and that there are multiple ways to reach your goals. Ultimately, if you find you aren’t where you want to be, don’t be afraid to take a good hard look at what you are doing, where you want to be, and make the necessary life changes to get yourself there.”

RUNNING FOR RIO

DAVIS

Favorite Running Locales: Eagle Creek and the Monon Trail. ADVICE: “For training, get in as many 20-mile runs in as your training and body will allow. Mentally, the more you can break the race up in your mind the better off you will be. At the end of the race every mile is a challenge. You have to take each challenge on one at a time and forget about what comes after.”

VERGARA-NEHUS

Favorite Running Locales: Monon Trail, Canal Towpath, Meridian Hills. ADVICE: “Achieving the best marathon performance out of yourself on any given day takes more than just all the logged workouts and miles. While this is certainly a means to an end, the more important aspect is running with your heart, reaching deeper into your soul and tapping into that source when your body wants to quit.”

KYLE

Favorite Running Locales: Canal Tow Path, Eagle Creek, Butler University track, IUPUI track, Meridian Hills neighborhood ADVICE: “Take baby steps! Do yourself a favor, take your goal time for your first marathon and add 15-20 percent extra time to it. And above everything else, don’t take running so seriously. You need to have fun. Enjoy the runs you do and the people you train with.” — STEVE HORN

BY S TEV E H O RN ED I T O R S @ N U V O . N E T

n February 13 in Los Angeles, four long distance runners currently living and training in Indianapolis will vie for a shot to represent the United States in the marathon at the 2016 Olympic Games, a 26.2-mile race scheduled to unfold on August 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Those four elite runners — Jordan Kyle, 29; Jesse Davis, 34; Anna Weber, 27; and Erin Nehus-Vergara, 34 — will compete in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. What binds their tales is that, on top of qualifying to compete in a race in which the top three runners proceed to represent the U.S. in Brazil, they are doing it out of pure love for the sport. Put simply, most have full-time jobs and careers in something other than long-distance running and running is, for them (like it is for the grand majority of people who do it), a hobby. Only these runners aren't your average hobby joggers — and they can run fast. Very fast. For the trials, the United States of America Track and Field (USATF) maintains qualifying standards that one had to run by January 17, 2016 – either in the

half-marathon or the marathon – to earn a spot in the exclusive race. Two out of the four Indianapolis-based runners competing in Los Angeles hit the half-marathon qualifying mark in order to qualify and one out of the four — Weber — hit both the marathon qualifying mark and the half marathon qualifying marks. Those numbers, though, only tell part of the story. To learn more about what goes into training for the trials, I joined all of the athletes for a day of training, riding alongside them on a bike (while they ran, that is) to get a feel for and glimpse of what it takes to compete at the highest level of the sport.

Kyle: future lawyer Jordan Kyle — a Fishers native who has averaged 85 miles per week this training cycle — is, in addition to being an elite runner, a full-time third year law school student at the IU McKinney School of Law. He also works as a volunteer assistant coach for the Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI) men’s cross country and track teams. In college, Kyle ran at Indiana University-Bloomington and then transferred to University of Colorado-Boulder — the latter’s one of the most prestigious collegiate

distance-running programs in the U.S. Like most other law school students, he takes out loans to help pay for tuition. But he doesn't have to worry about running gear expenses — he’s sponsored by Brooks Running. “Balancing full-time law school with being an elite runner is a daily exercise in managing priorities. I try to run in the morning, so I have the remainder of the day to study, go to class,” said Kyle. “I have a lot of breaks in my schedule but I have to continuously keep up with school work to ensure I use my time productively.”

NOT FOR THE MONEY

Jesse Davis

Even for those who end up finishing top ten in the trials, the financial pay off is pretty slim compared to many other sports. The winner takes home $80,000; second place $65,000; third $55,000; fourth $25,000 — and down to $7,000 for tenth. Each gender has a $300,000 prize money purse. “There is no life-changing financial incentive,” Wendy Shulik of Wendy City Productions, who is making a film about the 2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathons, recently told Competitor Magazine. “They are making huge life sacrifices every day because of their unwavering love for the sport.”

Davis: running community staple A 19-time marathoner, Jesse Davis completed the Monumental Marathon in an almost fairy tale-like manner, crossing the finish line as the victor exactly a tenth of a second before the Olympic Trials qualifying time cut off of 2:18:00. Flailing and hurling his body across the race’s final meters and the finish line, the way Davis completed the race and earned his qualifying time made headlines in national running publications such as Runner’s World Magazine. The video of his win went viral on social media within running circles. “Monumental was a race I have wanted to win for several years. I had previously finished second and fourth. I couldn't have possibly written the scenario better,” said Davis, a Bloomington, Indiana native who averages 90-100 miles per week of running. “To not only win, but to qualify by such a narrow margin in front of all my friends and family was a very special experience.” A 2012 qualifer for the trials as well, he works as a manager at the running store Runners Forum and also serves as vice president of Indy Runners, a local club for runners of all levels.

Then in January, Weber ran a 1:14:03 (5:38 per mile) half-marathon at the Houston Half-Marathon, good for 14th overall in the women’s race. NEHUS-VERGARA: 1:14:48 (5:42 per mile) in the Monumental Half-Marathon in 2014 and a fourth-place finish. Nehus-Vergara also ran a nearly identical 1:14:56 in the 2015 Monumental Half, which got her a third-place finish.

mom, physical therapist and adversity fighter No runner I met in this story juggles as many balls in a day as Erin Nehus-Vergara, the mother of a 2-year-old daughter, wife of a husband fighting stage-four colorectal cancer and part-time physical therapist. Most days, to fit in training, she’s out running before the sun rises at 6:30 a.m. on the Monon trail near Broad Ripple and peaked at about 100 miles per week for her training cycle. Nehus-Vergara is likely the most accomplished of the runners as well, nearly qualifying in past Trials in the 5K and 10k on the track, with personal best times of 15:52 and 32:56, respectively. She also finished 24th overall in the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston. A Gallia, Ohio native, Nehus-Vergara ran collegiately at Cedarville University in Dayton, Ohio. Despite fighting cancer, Nehus-Vergara’s husband has supported her efforts to go for a personal best performance at the trials. “Having the opportunity to race at the trials in hopefully my best shape to date is as much apart of the healing process for him as it's been for me,” said Nehus-Vergara. “We have chosen together as a family to sacrifice and pursue this goal despite so many obstacles in our way this year.” I recently met Nehus-Vergara at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning and biked alongside her and her training partner, Rosie Edwards — a 26-year-old Butler University cross country and track alum training to compete in the British Olympic Marathon Trials in April – during their respective workouts. Nehus Vergara did a light 4x600meter workout at her current 5K race pace effort (5:20 per mile), while Edwards did 4 miles at goal half-marathon pace (roughly 5:40 pace per mile). Though doing different workouts, the two of them found a way to do the workout together and helped push one another to hit their workout goal paces.

Anna Weber

Weber: grad school to full-time elite Anna Weber, a Michigan City, Indiana native and prolific blogger on her Tumblr account, has high expectations for herself at the trials — she dreams of a top-ten finish. She ran for Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and runs the highest mileage of the Indianapolis Trials-qualifying cadre, clocking 100-110 miles weekly. Logging huge mileage — as Weber does — takes a significant chunk of time, one of reasons she decided to take some time off from her analytical chemstry Ph.D. program at Indiana University-Bloomington in 2015 and focus on making the Trials. Though now sponsored by women’s running company Oiselle after qualifying for the trials, which provides her with running gear and helps cover race expenses, when Weber decided to take time off of graduate school she had no sponsor. So she started a GoFundMe crowd-funding campaign to pay for the solitary and non-lucrative life of a nonsponsored elite distance runner. Weber told me during a 12-mile run we did together (again, with me on a bike) along the White River Trail and Canal that some had criticized her for making the decision to take time off to become a full-time elite marathoner. While conceding it can still be difficult to pay the bills even with a sponsor, it appears Weber’s decision has paid off. She has hit personal best times in the 10-kilometers, half-marathon and marathon during her break from grad school. n THE US OLYMPIC TRACK AND FIELD TRIALS ARE SCHEDULED AS FOLLOWS: • MARATHON — Feb 13, Los Angeles, CA • 50K RACE WALK — Feb 21, Santee, CA • T RACK AND FIELD (all other events) — July 1-10, Eugene, OR • THE 2016 SUMMER OLYMPICS run from Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

I had a great time, though the incessant negativity and disregard for human life wore on me. As the crowd exited, I heard one guy refer to the film as “the most subversive movie I’ve ever seen!” I wonder if it will occur to him later that Deadpool: The Movie is a product of a gigantic corporation – designed, tested, jiggered and rejiggered to maximize its profit potential? I wonder if he will realize that his rebellious hero is just a puppet with a corporate hand much further up his ass than his girlfriend’s dildo? I kind of hope he doesn’t. n

Hail, Caesar! seems like a lark — an inessential Coen Brothers film. It’s not one of their best, but beneath the surface of this Old Hollywood satire lies a comforting statement from the siblings regarding future plans. Josh Brolin stars as Eddie Mannix, the guy behind the curtain of Capitol Pictures. He’s a fix-it man, cleaning up all the messes leaking across the studio lot. A few of them don’t really move the plot forward, such as Mannix’s attempt to cover up the pregnancy of actress DeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson) — the queen of “aquatic pictures.” The central conflict is the kidnapping of Baird Whitlock. In the midst of filming of a Roman epic — specifically “the tale of the Christ” — Whitlock is whisked away by a Communist group called “The Future.” The group consists of bitter screenwriters bent on exposing the capitalist system of Hollywood. As they reveal, the film industry distracts Americans from economic evil by throwing eye candy at them — or “bread and circuses,” as the Romans would say. The film’s jab at the Hollywood machine, doling out escapist diversions, is rather tired and simplistic. Fortunately, the Coens’ quickly shake themselves out of this idea. And they do so largely through Mannix. Near the end of the film, he wrestles with the choice of staying in the studio system or accepting a job from Lockheed Aircraft. Even though he’s tired of trudging through the sandbox of Hollywood, Mannix leans toward remaining a studio head because “it feels right.” This feels like the Coens’ way of saying they’re not jaded yet. Like Mannix, they’re in this business for the long haul. Mannix’s change of heart about showbiz is a tender, refreshing note in this otherwise middling movie. It has its moments, but overall this is one of the Coens’ weaker comedies. And it essentially feels “recycled,” like a patchwork of what they did in other period pieces. Hail, Caesar! is ultimately a minor work from the Coen Brothers. At times, it feels almost as sloppy and thrown together as the messes that Mannix spends the whole film trying to clean up. Even when they’re working within the realm of broad comedy, the Coens’ usually deliver films that linger in your memories. These are world-class filmmakers who have written and directed some of the best films ever made, some of my all-time favorites. Hail, Caesar! isn’t one of them. — SAM WATERMEIER

SUGAR TO GO

So maybe a night out on the town with dinner and dessert isn’t in the financial cards this year. There are LOTS of places to get treats to go — and we’re not just talking chocolates, either (not that there’s anything wrong with that). In addition to places like The Flying Cupcake and Renee’s Bakery (see page 11), there’s confectioners all over Central Indiana. While the Cupcake took top cupcake in NUVO’s Best Of voting this year, readers also loved them some Cake Bake Shop. Other local bakers to check out include The Quirky Feather in Carmel, a family operation with Chef’s Academy bona fides in the kitchen and that old-country standby, The Heidelberg Haus — perfect if your beloved makes her clothes out of old curtains while she’s singing. Oh, and there’s another option for you if you want to get your sugar on: DONUTS. If there’s a Homer in your house, he (or she) will SURELY love a cruller (or six) for Valentine’s, right? Last year’s NUVO Best Of Indy voters gave Rocket 88 the bronze (they have vegan options!), Jack’s Donut’s the silver and that Indy classic, Long’s Bakery, the first place prize. As always, you can find more treats in Indy by checking out nuvo.net. Cerulean Pastry Chef Peter Schmutte on his busiest day of the year

rom chocolatiers to pastry chefs, Valentine’s Day is the Super Bowl of dessert holidays. For Peter Schmutte, the celebrated pastry chef at Cerulean, dinner service on Friday, Saturday, and an unusual Sunday will be the culmination of a week of planning and prep as his artful creations make their way to the tables of lovers celebrating with sweets. Schmutte makes everything on his dessert menu in house from macarons to chocolates and his technical skill and flavor combinations are some of the most complex in the city. (For example, try his blonde chocolate tart with Valrhona chocolate and cashew praline mousse on a chocolate sponge cake with a cocoa sable and tangerine, butterscotch cream, toasted meringue, and a cashew Florentine or his ginger cream Napoleon made with five-spice phyllo, fresh pear mousse, cherry mead caramel and rosemary shortbread.)

Fifty percent of Cerulean’s diners order dessert — pastry chef Peter Schmutte (above) is hoping to raise that to ninety percent.

We took a minute to ask him about his preparations before the big weekend. NUVO: How busy will you be on Valentine’s weekend? PETER SCHMUTTE: Our biggest pop is still Saturday night even though we’re open specially on Sunday night just for Valentine’s. We’ll be doing a few special things in the dining room, plus we always offer mignardise at the end of the meal. My typical dessert sales average about 50 perecent of diners on any given night but it will be much higher for Valentine’s Day. I’d love to see it at 90

percent. NUVO: Wait, what is a “mignardise”? SCHMUTTE: Technically, a mignardise is a special little assortment of sweets a pastry chef serves after desert. At Cerulean, we always do something complementary like a caramel or a chocolate at the end of the meal. This year for Valentine’s we’re going to kick it up and offer a really nice selection of four or five different things. NUVO: What are you thinking for Valentine’s Day? SCHMUTTE: For chocolate, I’ve been kicking around the idea of a chocolate Pavlova for a while and I’m definitely going to try to have that on the menu for Valentine’s. It’s a meringue that you dry out in the oven, but it’s not entirely crisp. When you cut into it, it should be a bit soft in the middle. Typically a Pavlova is just dried meringue with fruit and whipped cream, so I’m starting to think about how I’m going to play >>>

<<< on those themes. I like to play with the technical aspects and throw in a few wrinkles. NUVO: What do you consider a risky dessert? SCHMUTTE: Cerulean has a reputation for being a place where you’re going to get something a little bit different. The chefs on the hot line take a few chances and I have to take a couple of chances, too. I like to give somebody something that maybe they’re not going to expect or that they’re not going to be able to find anywhere else. It’s kind of the fun to do something a little bit off the wall. NUVO: What does a pastry chef’s day look like on Valentine’s Day? SCHMUTTE: We always work! My daughter’s birthday is February 12 but

we always celebrate it on the Sunday after. I think I’ve convinced my wife to bring my daughter to the restaurant for Valentine’s Day. She’s 6 and the day I was the most proud was the day I offered her a chocolate chip cookie and she said “No, I want a macaron!” NUVO: What do you consider to be a win on a busy night like Valentine’s? SCHMUTTE: A success is when people leave the restaurant happy and they want to come back. I’m in an open kitchen and I love it when people come by and say “that was the best dessert I’ve ever had.” And the biggest compliment to me is when a table will order two rounds of dessert. It’s always special when they enjoy something so much they ask for the dessert menu again and order something else. n

TINY CHATS MARLON WILLIAMS CROSSES PACIFIC FOR DEAD OCEANS I’ll be real with you: I didn’t know Kiwi folk singer Marlon Williams until a week or so ago when I was doing some email inbox scrubbing and came across his selftitled album languishing, unlistened-to, unclickedupon. Williams was new to me, as I imagine he may be new to you, too. That’s what happens, SUBMITTED PHOTO although at an everdecreasing frequency, when someone is off being massively successful half a world away. But once I clicked, openers “Hello Miss Lonesome” and “Dark Child” grabbed me right away. As I continued, covers of Bob Carpenter’s “Silent Passage” and ‘60s ballad “When I Was a Young Girl” — not dissimilar from Nina Simone’s iconic version — snuck up on me. Williams’ S/T is a curt nine tracks long, including four he did not pen. But, as ever, folk music is not so much about who wrote the song, but about who feels the song. And Marlon is feeling it, y’all. So am I: a week later, I’ve listened through 11 different times or so. It’s a really, really great, effortless folk record. I grabbed a bit of Marlon’s time on the phone before he played the Bishop on Tuesday. He’ll be back through Bloomington, I expect, as he’s recently signed to Secretly Label Group’s Dead Oceans. Here’s snippets from our conversation. On new label Dead Oceans: “It started because a friend of mine worked for them in New York. A friend of mine who moved over from Christchurch, and so he sort of got the album under their nose … and now I’ve got a record deal. They’ve been really good. They’re a nice size. They’re big enough together to get things done, but they’re also small enough to care about getting things done in the right way. There’s some wonderful other acts on the label. A lot of them I’m not familiar with, and I’m trying get to know them. It’s a good time.” On growing up Maori: “[My Maori background] I think generally just my lust for always having harmonies, just you know … any opportunity in the song. That’s the key part of [Maori music] is having simple songs that you can just lay a harmony on top of each other. ... It’s folk singing… there’s no shame or subterfuge in Maori singing. It’s just very straight up and down. It’s very loud and open. It’s a very open style of singing. That’s probably something that I inherited a bit, being a singer and not worry about it too much.” — KATHERINE COPLEN

DILLA’S DONUTS

t’s common knowledge amongst music lovers that J Dilla was a groundbreaking hip-hop producer. It’s less common knowledge, however, that even he was listening to all kinds of Indiana music. Born James Dewitt Yancey, the Detroit producer and rapper worked with a slew of notable artists over the course of his career, from A Tribe Called Quest to Erykah Badu, before unfortunately passing away just days after the release of his iconic Donuts album in 2006. An avid music listener, Dilla was known for his masterful sampling, often finding the obscure pieces of audio to use in the context of a track. Of all the avid music listeners in Indianapolis, Kyle Long [Editor's note: See Long's interview with Dilla fan Doug Morris on the next page] seemed someone who would specifically be able to weigh in on Dilla’s sampling of Indiana records. Long told me his favorite example appears in a very obscure track from J Dilla’s discography called “U and Ur Smile.” Here, the producer samples a song titled “Invitation” by The Four Freshmen, a harmony group that formed at Butler University in the late 1940s and later influenced one Brian Wilson. “[The Four Freshmen] are kind of forgotten now, and considered kind of corny or cheesy,” says Long, who has collected several of The Four Freshmen’s records over the years. “So, as a DJ and hip-hop fan, I would never have thought, ‘Oh, this is sample material.’ But, I think this speaks to him having an appreciation for music completely outside the genres of hip-hop and soul.” Like a lot of other producers, Dilla certainly sampled from some of Indiana’s bigger names, Long admits, citing The Jackson 5 as a primary example. On the flipside, however, he was also exploring sounds from the state that only a true music lover would know about. Another example of this comes in a track he produced called “Somethin’ That Means Somethin’,” which ap-

pears on the Pharcyde’s second album, Labcabincalifornia. In this track, Dilla samples an obscure live version of legendary Indy jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s song “Red Clay.” Old Soul Entertainment will present another J Dilla tribute, moving from last year's Jazz Kitchen location to the Hi-Fi. Friday's show will feature appearances from several local emcees, including Ace One, Tony Styxx, Rehema McNeil, New Wave Collective, Maxie and more. All of these artists will be rapping over J Dilla tracks, which will be played by a live band of local jazz wizards. DJ Metrognome will man the decks. “It continues to move his legacy forward,” says Morris, who began paying attention to Dilla after hearing Common’s One Day It’ll All Make Sense. “What tends to happen is once you start naming the artists, like Erykah Badu, Common and The Roots, they’re like, ‘What? He produced that stuff? I love that stuff.” This year, Sean Stuart of Bringing Down The Band and Jay Brookinz of the Jay Brookinz Battle League will coordinate a sample flip contest as part of the event. For the competition, local producers were asked to make their own original track sampling a song that Dilla also sampled. Stuart says, “It’s not really a battle. It’s more just kind of like a showcase, and then we’re going to put a compilation together.”Brookinz says Dilla’s work has impacted him greatly over the years and he's excited to have a hand in this event honoring his hero. “He’s a father for a lot of us,” Brookinz says. “The guy fathered a lot of people’s styles and grew the culture in his own way. I can’t say enough awesome things about the guy.” n

OLD SOUL, NEW PARTIES

or a decade, Old Soul has significantly enriched Indy's nightlife scene with creatively designed DJ dance parties, spoken word nights and live performances by major national acts including Bilal and Saul Williams. To mark their tenth year, I caught up with Old Soul director Doug Morris at the WFYI production studios. Catch my full interview with Morris on the radio edition of Cultural Manifesto this Wednesday evening at 9 on 90.1 WFYI Public Radio. NUVO: I recently interviewed the great Indianapolis DJ Limelight, and he told me he got his start as a DJ spinning at house parties you were throwing while you were still in high school. Here we are nearly two decades later and you're still throwing parties. What is it about bringing people together around music that appeals to you? DOUG MORRIS: At some point I figured out that it's part of who I am. It's part of my purpose. I thrive on bringing people together around the arts. It's always been that way. I guess it goes back to my childhood. I was raised around the area of 43rd Street and College. There were a lot of amazing people on the block where I grew up. There was a woman who taught African dance and hip-hop to all the kids in the neighborhood for free. There was a gentleman who taught all the boys in the community kung fu for free. My brother and a lot of my friends became black belts in kung fu because someone in the community decided to take an interest in the youth. When people think about Indianapolis, they don't think about it in the same way as they do when they think about New York in the 1980s with the breakdancing, the boomboxes, and this beautiful heartbeat of culture happening everywhere. But believe it or not, my experience as a kid wasn't much different than that. It wasn't unusual for us to be out on the block breakdancing or throwing house parties. I also grew up in the church. My mother was part of a church choir that toured the country and put out multiple albums. Music has always been around me. There's never been a time when music wasn't a focus in my life. NUVO: Aside from the entertainment value It seems like the civic aspect of it 32 MUSIC // 02.10.16 - 02.17.16 // 100% RECYCLED PAPER // NUVO

really stuck with you in terms of giving back to the community and providing a point of direction for young people in the community. MORRIS: Absolutely. ARIES (March 21-April 19): “Love is a fire,” declared Aries actress Joan Crawford. “But whether it’s going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.” I disagree with her conclusion. There are practical steps you can take to ensure that love’s fire warms but doesn’t burn. Start with these strategies: Suffuse your libido with compassion. Imbue your romantic fervor with empathy. Instill your animal passions and instinctual longings with affectionate tenderness. If you catch your sexual urges driving you toward narcissists who are no damn good for you, firmly redirect those sexual urges toward emotionally intelligent, self-responsible beauties. Aries

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Fifteenth-century writer Thomas à Kempis thought that real love can arouse enormous fortitude in the person who loves. “Love feels no burden,” he wrote. “It attempts what is above its strength, pleads no excuse of impossibility; for it thinks all things lawful for itself, and all things possible.” As you might imagine, the “real love” he was referring to is not the kind that’s motivated by egotism, power drives, blind lust, or insecurity. I think you know what I mean, Taurus, because in the past few months you have had unprecedented access to the primal glory that Thomas referred to. And in the coming months you will have even more. What do you plan to do with all that mojo? Pisces

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini novelist Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) was fascinated in “life with the lid on and what happens when the lid comes off.” She knew both states from her own experience. “When you love someone,” she mused about the times the lid had come off, “all your saved-up wishes start coming out.” In accordance with the astrological omens, I propose that you engage in the following three-part exercise. First, identify a part of your life that has the lid tightly clamped over it. Second, visualize the suppressed feelings and saved-up wishes that might pour forth if you took the lid off. Third, do what it takes to love someone so well that you’ll knock the lid off. Gemini

CANCER (June 21-July 22): “No one has ever loved anyone the way everyone wants to be loved,” wrote author Mignon McLaughlin. I think that may be true. The gap between what we yearn for and what we actually get is never fully closed. Nevertheless, I suggest that you strive to refute McLaughlin’s curse in the coming days. Why? Because you now have an enhanced capacity to love the people you care about in ways they want to be loved. So be experimental with your tenderness. Take the risk of going beyond what you’ve been willing or able to give before. Trust your fertile imagination to guide your ingenious empathy. Virgo

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Here’s the counsel of French writer Anatole France: “You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to run by running, to work by working; in just the same way, you learn to love by loving.” What he says is always true, but it’s especially apropos for you Leos in the coming weeks. You now have a special talent for learning more about love by loving deeply, excitedly, and imaginatively. To add further nuance and inspiration, meditate on this advice from author Aldous Huxley: “There isn’t any formula or method. You learn to love by loving — by paying attention and doing what one thereby discovers has to be done.” Leo

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “I do not trust people who don’t love themselves and yet tell me, ‘I love you,’” said author Maya Angelou. She concludes: “There is an African saying: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.” With this in mind, I invite you to take inventory of the allies and relatives whose relationships are most important to you. How well do they love themselves? Is there anything you could do to help them upgrade their love for themselves? If their self-love is lacking, what might you do to protect yourself from that problem? Virgo

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “A coward is incapable of exhibiting love,” said Mahatma Gandhi. “It is the prerogative of the brave.” That’s my challenge to you, Scorpio. In accordance with the astrological currents, I urge you to stoke your uninhibited audacity so you can press onward toward the frontiers of intimacy. It’s not enough to be wilder, and it’s not enough to be freer. To fulfill love’s potential in the next chapter of your story, you’ve got to be wilder, freer, and bolder. Scorpio

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “It is not lack of love but lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages,” said Friedrich Nietzsche. He believed that if you want to join your fortunes with another’s, you should ask yourself whether you will enjoy your conversations with this person for the next 30 years — because that’s what you’ll be doing much of the time you’re together. How do you measure up to this gold standard, Sagittarius? What role does friendship play in your romantic adventures? If there’s anything lacking, now is an excellent time to seek improvements. Start with yourself, of course. How could you infuse more camaraderie into the way you express love? What might you do to upgrade your skills as a conversationalist? Sagittarius

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Love isn’t something you find,” says singer Loretta Lynn. “Love is something that finds you.” Singer Kylie Minogue concurs: “You need a lot of luck to find people with whom you want to spend your life. Love is like a lottery.” I think these perspectives are at best misleading, and at worst debilitating. They imply we have no power to shape our relationship with love. My view is different. I say there’s a lot we can do to attract intimate allies who teach us, stimulate us, and fulfill us. Like what? 1. We clarify what qualities we want in a partner, and we make sure that those qualities are also healthy for us. 2. We get free of unconscious conditioning that’s at odds with our conscious values. 3. We work to transform ourselves into lovable collaborators who communicate well. Anything else? What can you do to make sure love isn’t a lottery? Capricorn

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Only love interests me,” declared painter Marc Chagall, “and I am only in contact with things that revolve around love.” That seems like an impossibly high standard. Our daily adventures bring us into proximity with loveless messes all the time. It’s hard to focus on love to the exclusion of all other concerns. But it’s a worthy goal to strive toward Chagall’s ideal for short bursts of time. And the coming weeks happen to be a favorable phase for you to do just that. Your success may be partial, but dramatic nonetheless.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “We all have the potential to fall in love a thousand times in our lifetime,” writes Chuck Klosterman. “It’s easy. But there are certain people you love who do something else; they define how you classify what love is supposed to feel like. You’ll meet maybe four or five of these people over the span of 80 years.” He concludes, “A lover like this sets the template for what you will always love about other people.” I suspect that you have either recently met or will soon meet such a person, Aquarius. Or else you are on the verge of going deeper than ever before with an ally you have known for a while. That’s why I think what happens in the next six months will put an enduring stamp on your relationship with intimacy. Aquarius

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Sixteenth-century Italian poet Torquato Tasso described one of love’s best blessings. He said your lover can reunite you with “a piece of your soul that you never knew was missing.” You Pisceans are in a phase when this act of grace is more possible than usual. The revelatory boon may emerge because of the chemistry stirred up by a sparkly new affiliation. Or it may arise thanks to a familiar relationship that is entering unfamiliar territory. Pisces
