Jewish Soldiers were remembered in a touching Gallipoli Day parade in Bury.

For the first time a wreath was laid at the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers annual Gallipoli Day Parade in memory of the men of The Zion Mule Corps, which served in the Dardanelles, and The Judeans (aka The Jewish Legion), the 38th, 39th and 40th Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers. The parade, which commemorates the action of the Lancashire Fusiliers, took place on 23rd April.

“The Zion Mule Corps, arguably the first all Jewish military formation since Josephus, served with great distinction at Gallipoli, transporting much needed ammunition, equipment, and rations to the front line, under heavy enemy bombardment.” The commanding officer, Colonel John Henry Patterson, a devout Protestant Zionist from Northern Ireland, went on to form the Jewish Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers which was awarded its own distinctive cap badge depicting a Menorah.
