Visual Collab 2018 Interim report Signals of change in the adoption of digital tools for visual collaboration and group decision-making technology

About the venue and date The 28 November is a date close to the winter solstice. Time for reflection about the year passing by and to extract learning. London gets a wonderful spirit this time of the year. It is the season of harvest celebration and preparation for the upcoming holidays.

Welcome Visual Collab 2018 Share your opinions with those who appreciate your views and learn how to create a ‘collective compass’ to better decide about the future of the visual collaboration industry as a whole. (1)

Visual Collab adopts the Gurteen Knowledge Café as a work method for the Future Foresight sessions hosted by David Gurteen and guest members of the Gurteen Knowledge Community and guest members from the IAF - International Association of Facilitators Special Interest Group in Alternative Futures Facilitation.

Facilitation is all about making way for better problem solving and decision-making.

We are so pleased to have a distinguished group of speakers and hosts with us today. From left to right clockwise: Colin Messenger, John Hovell, David Gurteen, David Martin and Jon Knight.

Welcome to all participants. Our goal with this Future CafĂŠ is to start a Thought Leadership community and living lab on digital tools for visual collaboration and group decision-making

A quick intro to Nureva Span our digital canvas software and the QuickShare function we have used during the session.

A truly hybrid meeting. A world map with some of our participants.

In the XIX century Victor Hugo would have probably envisioned we humans could be meeting like this.

Welcome to the meetings of the future, today.

We experimented the Quick Share feature in Nureva Span. Handwritten post it notes can be pictured and easily shared in the digital canvas. It’s all about making a smooth transition from the traditional way facilitators work today in the adoption of new digital tools for visual collaboration.

The closing circle. The virtual discussions were more lively and connected. No doubt that the combination of the social technology of the Gurteen knowledge cafĂŠ made an impact and the use of Nureva Span acted as a bridge between participants onsite and remote. We all shared the same digital canvas where we could see each others posts. Check the following page for some of the content that was generated.

Powerful insights. The ideas generated by virtual participants sparked more ideas from onsite members.

Reporting this meeting’s content. I am using Senge’s notion of the perceptual iceberg to make sense of the content produced to write a final report in the shape of an industry green paper.

Work in progress

An industry green paper on the adoption of visual collaboration technology will be presented in the spring of 2019.

I was left with a few items that I could not classify in the perceptual iceberg’s categories.

We shape our tools and therefore our tools shape us. If I had to pick one sentence to summarise the conclusions so far. This is a quote from Marshall McLuhan, originally formulated by Winston Churchill during London bombings in the WW2 “We shape our buildings and therefore our buildings shape us”

Here are the residual questions I could not categorize as facts nor events… is there any hidden pattern among them?
