Shake up your holiday table with showstopper dinners that aren’t just turkey or ham

F

amily gatherings for Oceano resident Lisa Price and her folks rarely followed the traditional route. Her dad wanted a party for his celebration of life. When he passed away, Price did just that. The family scattered his ashes at Pirate’s Cove and welcomed 100 people at Price’s house afterward with a taco truck and a margarita machine. “Food at our house has never been all that normal,” Price said with a laugh. So why should the holiday season be any different? “Nobody in the family is wild about turkey, but we ate it for decades to be polite,” she said. “One year, my dad asked, ‘Would you rather have prime rib?’” For 20 years since then, bovine won out over bird on their Thanksgiving table. Price, who lived in Orange County at the time, would purchase prime ribs from Stater Bros. Markets in Newport Beach and drive to San Luis Obispo County to her parents’ home. Now, she prefers Vons and Arroyo Grande Meat Company. The bounty of ranch and seaside cultures make SLO and Santa Barbara counties a culinary playground for anyone who wants their holiday dinners to be something out of the ordinary. No matter the holiday, there are plenty of food suppliers and curators in both counties who can help amp up your feast. If all else fails, there’s always Chinese food for takeout. Just remember to order ahead. Take Price’s Christmas dinners, where Thanksgiving prime rib gives way to king crab legs. The dinners started in Sacramento 20 years ago for an “orphans’ Christmas” with friends who couldn’t go home for the holidays. Price splits her Costco crab legs lengthwise, drizzles them with garlic butter, and slowly roasts them in the oven. Tablecloths gets swapped for newspaper sheets, and Price lays out bottles of wine, sourdough garlic bread, and bowls of salad. “We have an absolute melee of crab shells flying around at Christmas, but everybody is satisfied with this amazing meal, and all you have to do is roll all the newspaper up and throw it in the trash when you’re done,” she said. Want crabs and lobster tails from somewhere other than a supermarket? Pick out live ones and have them cooked, cracked, and served fresh at Giovanni’s Fish Market in Morro Bay, or take live crabs home to cook them yourself. Call (805) 772-2123 to place your order of Christmas crabs before the holiday rush. Morro Bay’s Tognazzini’s Dockside Fish Market also dishes out fresh catches for holiday needs. Call (805) 772-8120 to preorder fresh seafood. Farther south, Olde Port Fish and Seafood Company in Grover Beach provides live Maine lobster, Dungeness crabs, and rock crab to purchase and steam. Other seafood options include oysters, halibut, scallops, and salmon. Call (805) 489-3474 to preorder. For those who aren’t seafood lovers, shake up the American classics with a trip to Azteca Market in Atascadero. Established this June by Guatemalan Carolina Fuentes and her husband, Gabriel Zenteno, from Chiapas, Mexico, the family-run restaurant serves delicacies that fuse both their backgrounds.

For those craving a less hands-on dinner experience, Santa Maria’s Woodin You Like To Party charcuterie company might be the answer. love a parade, the tramping of feet, I love every beat I hear of a drum. I love a parade, when I hear a band, I just want to stand and cheer as they come.” If you love a parade, you’ll get a chance to line the streets of downtown San Luis Obispo with your friends and neighbors on Friday, Dec. 1, for the 47th annual Holiday Parade, which is expected to feature nearly 90 decorated floats, marching bands, vehicles, dancers, and more. This year’s theme is “Out of This World!” You can also sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what you want for Christmas, and you can memorialize the moment with three paid photo options: take your own, a printed souvenir photo, or a combination of both. Santa House opens Nov. 24, and at noon, the jolly old man will ride in on a fire truck accompanied by a SLO County Band performance. Your last chance to see Santa will be Dec. 24. Find operating hours for his house on the downtownslo.com website, where you can also sign up as a volunteer elf and spread some holiday cheer. There’ll also be loads of family fun in Mission Plaza: an old-fashioned carousel, a lighted 20-foot Christmas tree, animated light displays, and a music-synched light show. It’s going to be merry as “deck the halls with boughs of holly,” people. New Times spoke to Rachel Lackmann, marketing and communications manager at Downtown SLO, for more details. New Times: The parade has been a mainstay of SLO’s holiday celebrations since 1976. Has it ever been canceled? Rained on? If so, did that affect attendance? Rachel Lackmann: To my knowledge, the only year we went without a parade was 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our parade is a rain-or-shine event—and last year was a drizzly one. It didn’t seem to drastically affect attendance, but there were more umbrellas in the crowd than usual. NT: When were other features added such as the holiday tree, carousel, and Santa’s House? RL: Santa’s House has been a tradition for decades, as well as the tree and carousel. In 2021, we expanded the lights and sights in the

Plaza to include a walk-through ornament and other lighted photo opportunities. In 2022, we took it a step further with a giant lighted tunnel and a music-synced light show. This year, we’ve got even more up our sleeve, like a giant light-up sleigh. NT: How many different Santas “man” Santa’s House, and are they all men? Ever have a female Santa? RL: Hmm ... I don’t know what you’re talking about, our Santa flies in from the North Pole. And Mrs. Claus may just join him at the end of the parade—you’ll have to see! NT: How’d you come up with this year’s theme, “Out of this World!”? RL: We’ve had this theme floating around in our heads for a while—and how fun does

NT: I’m sure you’re aware of the general anger over downtown parking rates. Is Downtown SLO concerned parking rates might affect attendance to the parade or any of the other planned downtown activities? RL: Per the [Nov. 7 City] Council meeting, parking will be free on the night of the parade from 6 to 9 p.m. both on-street and in the garages. We encourage the community to be mindful that roads will close at 4 p.m. on Dec. 1, and to visit downtownslo.com/ parade to view the map of road closures. NT: Do you have any suggestions for alternate ways to get downtown without driving and parking? RL: On parade night, we strongly encourage carpooling and biking. Free bike valet will be located along the parade route, provided by Bike SLO County. NT: OK, be honest—does all this added holiday work ruin Christmas for you? RL: Not at all! The Holiday Parade is probably my favorite part of the holidays— it’s always a blast.

NT: Anything else you think people should know about this year’s Downtown SLO festivities? RL: We’re encouraging everyone to keep their dollars local this holiday season and choose downtown when holiday shopping, especially on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 25). SLO for the holidays Holiday Guide Not every Cal Poly student can make it home for the holidays, so where do they go?

F

irst-year biology student Rabeeya Asif was in a ghost town. The streets were empty, the coffee shops void of almost any people except employees, the Central Cost air was brisk and piercing. Yet it was Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s campus—normally bustling and overflowing with student activity—during Asif’s Thanksgiving break. “It was weird,” Asif—now a fourth year—

recalled. “I’d never seen SLO ever empty like that.” What led to this isolating and surreal experience? Well, she couldn’t make it home that year for Thanksgiving. Asif hasn’t been able to go home to Washington state, where she was raised and where most of her family still live, until this year. “It was weird because it was very peaceful yet saddening because you watch all your hometown friends going back

for the break,” she said. “You miss those traditions that get started when everyone kind of convenes in your hometown during that Thanksgiving break.” As with most things for out-of-state students, Asif said, the main culprit of that lack of return home was the sheer cost of flying out of the SLO airport for the holidays. “It did certainly [feel] like an equity thing at the time because a flight home to Washington was like $600 at the cheapest,” she said. “It is ridiculous that out-of-state, and even some in-state students, have to choose between Thanksgiving and winter break purely out of cost.” For her first year, Asif said it was isolating but she made it work with the help of her mom and some internal urges to get out and explore a town that was still so new to her. “If I remember correctly, I think my mom ordered me a Thanksgiving dinner from Sprouts or Whole Foods and they delivered it to my dorm,” she said with a laugh. “But I did take it as like a real break, I mean I got campus all to myself for my fi rst year and just had the ability to walk around and take in everything without the people.” In years since, Asif has learned to embrace being more of a local during this season and to take advantage of the slower pace to prepare for her final exams, which often fall a few weeks after Thanksgiving. “Coffee shops are kind of like my holy grail at all times for studying, so when I have these moments where I feel like SLO belongs to me because there’s just no POLY HOLIDAY continued page 27

or some, immersing oneself in the holiday spirit involves volunteering time to be with elderly residents who might need a helpful hand to hold, and at least two San Luis Obispo County organizations are making that possible. Senior Angels of the Central Coast, run by local resident Angelita Miranda, and Be a Santa to a Senior by Home Instead are looking for volunteers to help shine a festive light for the elderly who might feel lonely during the holiday season. “The senior population are kind of hidden away, they don’t leave their homes, and they’ve worked their whole life, and it’s important to give back to them,” Miranda said. “What they have is what they have; they’re on a limited income, and they don’t qualify for a lot of the services because they have an income coming in, but that income isn’t enough to survive.” Senior Angels of the Central Coast works to help struggling seniors within the community, and during the holiday season, the organization runs a senior wish program DONATING HOLIDAY SPIRIT After the local office of Home Instead receives gifts from granting wishes to seniors who are in care community members to help the elderly, volunteers wrap and deliver them before Christmas Day. centers, she said. one there, as cheesy as that sounds,” she said. “It’s become my grind time to just be myself and study.” In-state students like Sacramento-area raised Andy Sherar, now a Cal Poly alumnus who lives in San Luis Obispo, went through a similar experience and learned to embrace the tranquility and friends he made while in town for the holidays. “I honestly kind of loved it,” Sherar said with a laugh. “I spent every Thanksgiving here, and it made it special, especially when I was spending it with people who came to the same conclusion about it as me.” One of the bigger conclusions he and his peers from out of the area drew was how they

could break traditional holiday expectations and establish their own. “It gave me the perspective of, wow these are people that I’m not necessarily having to be around as opposed to the traditional Thanksgiving—not that I mind being around my family—and that choice of being around friends is very nice,” Sherar said. “It allowed us to do a ton of different things.” Some of those new choices included hand-rolling sushi for Thanksgiving dinner. Another was making mulled wine over the stovetop. These experiences were with different people each year depending on who was new to the group or who stayed behind that season. “The common factor at all of these was the people out of state, and in the state, that

really couldn’t go home due to travel costs,” Sherar said. “Especially when you have Christmas around the corner, most people had to opt for that.” He and Asif both encourage those who are in the same boat to use being stranded in SLO as an opportunity to try new things. “You can look at it as, ‘It sucks, I’m not with my family,’ and the isolating feelings that follow, but there is not going to be many times in SLO for students to experience the city for what it is and see the places they might never see,” Asif said. “Take advantage of this time because this is where the memories that last a lifetime are made.” ✦ Reach Staff Writer Adrian Vincent Rosas at arosas@newtimesslo.com.
