Last fall, we had our winningest fall in 40 years when the football team won its division and soccer won the conference. Men’s basketball also was on fire, winning the CBI Championship. I anticipate another great year! Good luck this year and have fun! We’re so glad you’re here and can’t wait to see what you achieve. UNT Proud,

Semester survival guide Matthew Lopez Contributing Writer

It’s finally August, and freshmen are panicking about what this year and the new exciting place will bring them while the upperclassmen are dreading the traffic and heavier work load. It’s that time again, where guides of how to survive the first week of college are in abundance. With so many people moving in all in one weekend, traffic gets a bit hectic, especially for people who became acquainted with the slow pace of summer on a college campus. The easiest way to survive the morning traffic onslaught is is to know when traffic is going to hit hardest, and planning your day around it. Plenty of shortcuts and new roads can be found around Denton, perusing Google Maps before heading off is highly recommended. Beating traffic is essential to making your time as efficient as possible. When finalizing your class schedule, map out

the best ways to get to each class. Nothing is worse about the first few weeks of classes than getting lost or sitting in the wrong class. Make sure you know where your classes are in the buildings, depending on where you enter a building, the second floor might be the floor you’re on instead of the first floor. You’re finally in the right class. While sitting through an hour long lecture, you find yourself dozing off. A way to combat that is to keep yourself busy but still paying attention to the lecturer. After class, introduce yourself to the professor. There are either 30 people in your class or 300 people, but either way, familiarizing yourself with the professor helps them attach a face to otherwise just a name in their roll sheet. So it’s the first few weeks of classes and you still don’t know the name of that guy who asked to borrow a piece of paper, and now you’re in a weird loop of conversation but not knowing each other’s names. To avoid that, just introduce yourself

in the beginning of the year to the people sitting around you. Don’t be afraid to ask for someone else’s name, because it settles any kind of discomfort from not knowing before. Get their number, so you can text each other whenever the other misses class and needs the notes. Once you’ve introduced yourself to the people around you and vice versa, it’s a good time to make plans with them. Study sessions are a good way to get to know each other better and to help out with any questions pertaining to the lessons in class. Inviting your classmates to parties is also a good way of gauging how people act in a social setting and figuring out if those are the friends you would like to have. Although attending parties is the biggest excitement for every college student, being safe is the top priority. When going out, coordinate with friends about where you’re going and maybe using the Find My Friends application on the iPhone. Look out for each other at parties. Take care of people and make sure your friends are doing okay. If you or any of your friends get a bit too ine-

briated, call an Uber or a Lyft to take you or the friend home. Everyone’s safety is the biggest concern. In addition to classes, school events and joining organizations is a great way of meeting new people that already have at least one thing in common with you. Going to school events and organization meetings, even if just for the free food, makes it easy to talk to people about what those meetings pertain to. After all of those introduc-

tions and study sessions, a place to nap on campus would be nice. Explore the campus. The buildings on campus all have nooks and crannies to have a quiet nap in. If anything, the UNT Union has some quiet places to nap like the small computer lab on the third floor or, if it’s not blistering hot, the Union rooftop is a way to be outside but away from people, making it peaceful and quiet.

Helpful tips: exploring the University Union Ryan Tatum

Contributing Writer

The University Union is the heart and soul of the University of North Texas. A heart and soul that costs around $130 million. The name of the building itself, the “Union,” is meant to reflect that it brings the university together, here, in one place. We can already hear you asking, “Why should I care? I just wanna stay in my dorm and play video games.” You might be surprised by everything that they were able to pack into this four story combination of cement and metal. There might actually be something here to get

you out of that blanket burrito and take the five-minute walk to the Union. When you first enter the Union, the first thing you’ll notice is just how damn big it is. With a student and faculty population of over 40,000 people, the main building on campus HAS to be big. The school colors are proudly on display with tons of shades of green and white. Around every corner are over 60 unique art pieces displaying a piece of UNT history. But now comes the big question, “Where should I go first?” Let’s cover the important stuff, food, right? The Union has you covered. There is a Fuzzy’s taco shop, Taco Bueno, Chick-Fil-A, Jamba Juice,

Try something new or come hang out with your friends. The Pohl Rec center is 138,000 square feet and houses many multipurpose courts for basketball and volleyball. It even has an indoor soccer gym and a track with 4 lanes. The two story building has a variety of Elliptical machines, cardio machines, stationary bikes and free weights that are waiting for you to use. But it offers more than just machines. If your

interested in something different you can try a variety of classes that include yoga, kickboxing, athletic conditioning and cycling for less than $3 a day. Sometimes the classes are even free. If you’re in the mood for some relaxation, be sure to check out the leisure pool as well. The aquatic area includes a lap and leisure pool with underwater seating, water fountains, and a 29-person hot tub. Throughout the year, the rec center is always the place to be. Many outdoor pursuits cost money but there’s always a free event every month. Those include moonlight yoga, dance parties, and dive-in movies at the pool. The rec center amenities also include a climbing wall and lounge area. If

There’s even Avesta, a super fancy Italian restaurant located on the second floor. Still haven’t spent enough money? Well, the Union is full of goods and services to purchase! Inside there is an enormous Barnes and Noble, The Mainframe (a PC and Apple repair and upgrade shop), Eagle Images (a photo print shop), Design Works (a graphic design service), and an in-house Wells Fargo. The Union also has two, yes two, ballrooms to host your fanciest dance parties, a fully functional post office, an art gallery, pool tables, live TV, tons of meeting rooms, and a rooftop garden. There are also a LOT of important offices located in the Union as well. While the businesses in the Union do close at night, the building itself never does and can even be a magical place after dark. Sometimes in the late hours you’ll see students jamming out on a guitar on the performance stage or showing off their best dance moves on the rooftop. Every visit to the Union is a unique one. Trust us, tons of interesting stuff has gone down here, and more definitely will too. The Union is home to over 180 student organized events!

College is one of the most exciting times of your life. You are given the reins to explore one of life’s greatest gift, freedom! But like Uncle Ben told a young Peter Parker (spidey), with that freedom comes a huge responsibility. You don’t realize it until your card declines at your favorite fast food restaurant. Another great working opportunity is the work-study program provided through financial aid from UNT. College work-studies are based on financial need and you could be awarded a max amount of money that you

would be earning through the work-study. In order to be awarded a work-study you would have to apply for FASFA, and then indicate whether you would like to apply for a work-study on the FAFSA form. Even if you do not qualify for financial aid, you can still apply and be awarded a work-study. You can pick whatever position-type you would like, and choose whether you would want part-time or full-time. hat are the steps you need to take to get any one of the many job opportunities we have at UNT? Look forward to the things you will look back on Sebastian King Contributing Writer

Once more into the breach we go, it’s time to return to school. We are back again to muddle and struggle our way through another semester of university, and mostly the Texas heat. We have all heard more advice than we know what to do with regarding how to make it through, and I likely cannot proffer anything you haven’t heard before. However, I can remind you to take a moment to enjoy this semester. Look forward to the things you will look back on. As I come towards the end of my undergraduate career, I look back not on the grades or that exam that went wrong, but on the times with friends afterwards doing anything but dwelling on the hard-fought week gone by. Get involved, there’s so

much to look forward to this semester. For a start, there is the homecoming bonfire and fireworks display—during about the only part of the year when it’s tolerable to go outside. There’s countless events going on, such as cake decorating or afternoon bingo, just take a lunchtime to watch the jazz band in the syndicate, join an evening marshmallow roast or even de-stress by listening to an impromptu playing of the union piano. Make friends for life by joining a club. Did you enjoy the world cup? Maybe you should try joining the FIFA club, and go toe to toe with the stars you saw represent their countries by playing FIFA 18. There’s something for everyone. Anime, Archery, German Poetry, Paintballing, you name it. If you’re short on time, or want to advance your career

whilst enjoying yourself, then there are events for you too. Many clubs also host workshops to teach skills and develop talent, and organization like Advertising Club will help you be involved with industry professionals. In spring UNT will host its home hackathon, HackUNT, where you can build anything you want, develop skills, get fed, and win big prizes. On August 22, Mean Green Fling is the place to find your new club or activity, while getting to know people. There will be nearly 400 activities, clubs, sponsors and departments looking for people like you to get involved with them and start something special. Come and see us, the North Texas Daily team, too!

Transferring from another college: a hopefully helpful guide Derek Foshee Contributing Writer

Transferring from another college, I had no idea what to expect or do. The entire process was stressful and unenjoyable; however, it shouldn’t be. Here’s to the class of 2022, and transfers from elsewhere; a few things to know when transferring to North Texas, and how you can have the full experience here in Denton. I would advise to try and get involved with as many, if not at least one, organizations and on-campus jobs, as they are key to a full experience at UNT. There are over 400 organizations on campus here at UNT, including Greek Life (both fraternities and sororities) and other organizations that vary from the Student Government Association, North Texas College Democrats, and North Texas College Republicans, to the major specific clubs such as, Ad Club, Real Estate Club, Sports Marketing Association, and UNT Art Photography Club. This is only but a tiny list of the clubs and organizations offered here at UNT. Joining a student organization is a great way for you to make friends that share the same interest as you, you might even find someone you have class with. Eagle Careers (UNT Handshake) is an absolute great way for you to not only get a part time job in college, but a wide variety of jobs in the greater DFW area after college too. Not only that, but they have a variety of internships available online that

will only help get you further in your education and career. Experience is very important in today’s competitive job nature so take advantage of these opportunities. I was lucky enough to get involved with North Texas Daily and have had a great transition into the University of North Texas. I can’t think of a better way to learn the ins and outs of UNT other than joining an on-campus job, or organization. It has helped me learn the campus, meet many faculty, students, and alumni, as well as furthering my knowledge to help prepare me for life after college. Jobs, organizations, and internships are very important in getting a full experience here at UNT, and here are just a few things more things to know when you’re new to campus. There are four libraries at UNT, yes four libraries. I don’t know why, but I found that very confusing and unique, coming from a school that had one ginormous library. These four libraries are, Willis, Media, Eagle Commons, and Discovery Park. Willis Library is in the center of campus and has pretty much everything you need. It is open 24 hours, which includes the computer lab, and is essentially the most popular library on campus. You will find most students hanging or studying together on one of the five flours. Need a study break or a quick snack, Willis has its own café that serves coffee and food for your convenience. Most Greek life and student orgs will hold study groups

North Texas Daily Advertorial Feature

throughout the year which is another great way to meet people. The Media Library contains the UNT Libraries nonprint, audiovisual collections, and is used mostly as a support tool for faculty and research needs. It also has a collection of all genres of films. The library is located in Chilton Hall, Room 111 (open 7:45 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Thursday, 7:45 AM to 6:00 PM Friday, and 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM on weekends). The Eagle Commons Library is located on the first floor of Sycamore Hall, and is home to the government documents, law, political science, geography and business collections, and is also the location of UNT’s Funding Information Network and has study spaces for students (open 7:45. AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Friday, and 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM on weekends). Discovery Park Library is located in Discovery Park Room B112 which is the only library located off campus. Don’t worry about transportation though because UNT offers a bus that travels specifically to discovery park every day. This library provides the Colleges of Information and Engineering with resources and advanced services to its students and faculty, with laptop checkouts, public computers and student study areas. Now, I haven’t had to go to any libraries other than Willis, but it’s actually very helpful to know the locations and what the other libraries actually hold. Another place to go and hang out is the Union. UNT’s Union is not only a spectacular looking building, it’s also the center location of almost all things student services has to offer on campus in Denton. The building itself is connected to the Eagle Student Services Building, which is another thing to know when coming to school here for the first semester. You will be at the ESSB a lot, because Financial Aid is there, Registrar is there, my personal favorite dining is located there, and quite a few core classes are held there

too. The has multiple floors to study at, including 2 patios for fresh air breaks. It also holds ballrooms where many school and student organization events happen. The Union also has 11 different retail spots for you to grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee with friends. One of the last things to note are the many different dining options here at North Texas. There are eleven options when it comes to dining options on campus. The main four are Bruce Dining Hall, Kerr Dining Hall, and Champs @ Victory hall. The others spread all around campus are West Dining

Hall, Biz Café located inside the Business Leadership Building, Go Station outside the Department of History, Mean Greens @ Maple Hall, Crumley Hall Dining, Park Place Market at Discovery Park, and Café GAB @ General Academic Building. Hopefully this quick guide will help get your Eagle wings ready to fly, and push you in a better and more understanding direction. Students at UNT are very welcome and diverse, so I truly believe anyone can find their spot here. I was once the outside transfer, and trust me, I know it’s hard, but I’ve truly never felt more a part of a family than I do here with the Mean Green nation.

Helpful tips: student organizations Erin Pinkham Contributing Writer

UNT can be overwhelming, especially when you want to get involved. With over 400 student organizations on campus ranging from Greek Life, to economics club, to even League of Pokémon Trainers, how do you even find what

you’re interested in? No worries. Read on to see some great events, sites, and organizations that will help you find your home at UNT. UNT’s organizations cover interests in politics, gaming, feminism, medicine, music, religion, cars, sports, and many more which are all listed on the OrgSync website. There you can find all the organizations,

Making it through, together Hunter Coey Contributing Writer

“Here, over here, please take this, you’ll love it here, you belong here, we are all family, you’ll find your lifelong friends here.” These along with many other phrases are the things you hear daily during your first couple of months in college. You enter college with the thought of being alone and becoming an independent adult who has everything together and the whole world to explore, but it’s not all that its cracked up to be. Many people including myself have the thought that they can get through everything alone and want to fight the struggle of bills, paying for every meal and doing your own laundry, but doing that alone for the first time could be one of the biggest struggles in your young life. The answer is you can’t. Getting involved on campus whether its from the chess club to Greek life or even the new Esports team, recently added here at the University of North Texas, gives you

a new sense of relationships with people, you pick your own family and that will ultimately give you the life long friends you have always wanted. Many people think that the first organization they join right when entering college defines who they are and how they will be for the next four years of their college career, but it doesn’t. You can join a Greek organization, the chess club, the Ad club and so many more. You shouldn’t let what other people’s opinions in your organizations define the way you think or fear that they will no longer accept you. Most likely they wanted to join other organizations as well, they just were to nervous or scared of what their friends would say to step out of their comfort zone. Getting involved is the first step. Why just get involved by wearing their t-shirts and attending the meetings and nothing else. With every organization follows strong leaders and an executive board. Becoming an officer or executive member could be a great way to

their social media platforms, when and where they meet, what they’re about, everything. If you don’t see an organization that you like, go ahead and make one. UNT’s Student Activities center oversees registration and planning for each organization. They also list on their site recourses like recruiting

make a difference in your organization, and give you something to put on your resume for future reference. I’m not saying shoot for being the president of every organization you are involved in, but to strive to make the organization whatever you want it to be and fulfill the vision you have. That can mean get on multiple executive boards and be the leader everyone was looking for, but it also can mean being a great and active member, and creating a welcoming environment for the future of the organization. Joining an organization also means joining a level of academic standards. Especially as an officer or executive you have to be a good example for our peers, that means not only having good behavior but having grades to match. In high school, it was always to about you having good grades, and wanting to go to a good college. The same thing applies here, you want a good GPA and to get that degree. Your grades are of course important in the hopes of graduating, but the benefit of joining organizations on campus is the success of networking with people in your organization, other leaders and faculty on campus and even alumni of the organizations you get involved in. Networking has helped many people get jobs after and before they graduate, or even just having the benefit of knowing those people can make your circle of networking that much bigger. Networking can be just as crucial if not more than your skills or experience, it can sometimes be about who

members and planning fundraisers to help make each org the best it can be. UNT’s Student Activities department also hosts events on campus like Mean Green Spring Fling and Non-Traditional Week where incoming students and non-traditional students can find where they fit in and orgs can recruit new students. UNT also has on campus involvement advising from Campus Life Ambassadors who are

students too and know what you’re going through. The ambassadors meet with students one on one either on campus or video chat to find a few organizations that are geared toward each students’ interest. Student organizations can be a great way to make friends and improve your resume. UNT has hundreds of orgs that will fit your specific interests and help you find your place.

you know, and not what you know. That’s why joining an organization here at UNT is the best choice any student

here can make. Not only do you gain experience and knowledge from it, but you join a line of lifelong friends and legacies.
