Rollin’ on the River While you’re in Southern Indiana, you owe it to yourself to enjoy some riverside fun. Here are a few ways to stay active on the Ohio riverfront in Clarksville, Jeffersonville, and New Albany.

Bike It: The Ohio River Greenway
Pedal your two (or three) wheeler on the Ohio River Greenway in three historic river side towns: New Albany, Jeffersonville and Clarksville. The Greenway has paths ranging from 1.4 to 2 miles. Along the Greenway, you’ll have stellar views of the Louisville skyline, birds, and the mighty Ohio. Hike down to one of the largest exposed Devonian era fossil beds in the world at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville. Or bike to the Clark Cabin. Travel to the Loop Islands Wetlands, or enjoy the playgrounds and picnic areas along the way. If you don’t have a bicycle, rent one from the Widow’s Walk Ice Creamery and Bicycle Rentals or Wheel Fun Rentals at Louisville’s Waterfront Park.
Bridge It: Big Four Pedestrian & Cycling Bridge
One of Jeffersonville’s most popular activities is crossing the Ohio River on the Big Four Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge. When you take the full one-mile trek, you’ll cross the Ohio River – walking or cycling to two states in one day! On summer weekends on the Jeffersonville side you’ll see a variety of musical acts or family-friendly movies on Riverstage, a barge-turned-performance venue.
Walk It: Riverside Cities
Stroll through our historic river towns, and you’ll enjoy urban amenities just a few blocks from the river. You can watch Jill and Warren Schimpff make their famous cinnamon red hot drops at Schimpff’s Confectionery in Jeffersonville. Savor the taco trio – including the spicy brisket taco – at Red Yeti Brewing Company; then shop in independent businesses like Sugar Maples Antiques & Gifts, Choices Boutique, or Horner Novelty.
In Clarksville’s Ohio riverside section, you can visit the newly reopened Interpretive Center at the Falls of the Ohio State Park. The center’s exhibits have been completely reimagined to be hands on and interactive. You can also get one of the best views of the Louisville skyline at Ashland Park. Why not stay for a picnic?
Cross the levee on New Albany’s Ohio River Greenway section, and walk through Main Street’s Mansion Row or head down to the dining and shopping district. You’ll find unique gifts at Regalo, peek into history at Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site, drink hand crafted brews at New Albanian Brewing Company and the Floyd County Brewing Company, and sample the up-andcoming food scene.

Ohio River History
The river plays a big role in the area’s history. The riverside towns of Jeffersonville and New Albany were steamboat building towns in the 1800s. These towns and Louisville drove much of the Ohio River commerce. To find out more about that history, visit the Howard Steamboat Museum, the Culbertson Mansion, and the Falls of the Ohio State Park.

Outdoor Fun and Sports
If you crave outdoor activities, we’ve got you covered. Rent bicycles at Widow’s Walk or Wheel Fun Rentals, and cruise down the Ohio River Greenway. Three sections of the Greenway are already open. Once complete, they’ll all connect to form a 12-mile multiuse path. Hiking buffs can visit Charlestown State Park or the Knobstone Trail near Deam Lake. Southern Indiana is the hilliest part of the state, so there are plenty of opportunities for fitness and scenic views.
Wow-Worthy Watching
Clarksville’s Derby Dinner Playhouse brings theatre to kids with shows like “Charlotte’s Web” and “Jack Frost Saves Christmas.” Saturday performances include breakfast or lunch, and season tickets are available. For other sweet entertainment, watch candy making demonstrations at Schimpff’s Confectionery. The cinnamon red hots have a sweet history kids will eat up!
Hands-On
Kids will discover a whole new world, starting with the ancient Devonian Sea and fossil beds at the Falls of the Ohio State Park. New exhibits at the park’s Interpretive Center let you experience the sea as if you’re under water. Pull levers to learn about sea coral, feel the coarse hair of a bison, and immerse yourself in Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. In summer, take the family to pick strawberries, peaches, apples, and pumpkins at Joe Huber’s Family Farm and at Huber’s Orchard, Winery, & Vineyards. Just one mile apart, these agricultural experiences bring the entire family together for home cooking and country living. Throughout the year, kids can get involved in experiential arts at family fun workshops at the Carnegie Center for Art & History. Here, they’ll make their own art like pet tags or Derby hats.
Every child (or grown up) who dreams of being a firefighter will want to visit the Vintage Fire Museum. A select few may get to climb aboard one of the shiny red fire engines to crank the siren, but all can see how bucket brigades worked and learn about fire safety. Outdoor stages like Warder Park and RiverStage in Jeffersonville and New Albany’s Bicentennial Park are the scene for country, blues, rock, and big band sounds. You can also hear live music at smaller stages in various restaurants and other local attractions.
Water parks abound here as well. New Albany opened its River Run Aquatic Park with a lazy river, splash pad and slides in 2015, and Clarksville will reopen its remodeled Aquatic Park in 2016. Other favorites include Atlantis Water Park in Clarksville and the Jeffersonville Aquatic Park. Sports fans will find dedicated baseball, soccer, and softball fields. Just across the river is Slugger Field, home to the Cincinnati Reds farm team, the Louisville Bats. Speaking of baseball, drive just five minutes for a visit to the iconic Louisville Slugger Museum, a legendary familyowned company in business since 1884. Visit Southern Indiana for a number of hands-on attractions and activities the whole family will enjoy.
Experience Southern Indiana’s history with reenactments at Tunnel Mill in Charlestown or the George Rogers Clark cabin in Clarksville. The Louisville Zoo’s signature exhibits include the award winning Glacier Run, where kids can see polar and grizzly bears. They can also attend zookeeper talks and watch animal demonstrations.
Just across the river in Louisville, the Kentucky Science Center offers hands-on exhibits. Plus Kentucky Kingdom will thrill the kids with its roller coasters. In 2016, the new Storm Chaser will open, which will be 100-feet tall at its highest point.

Brewery scene gets crafty
Craft breweries are a growing trend. The number of breweries open in the U.S. is an all-time high of 4,144 according to the Brewery Association. Six of those breweries are in Southern Indiana.

Spring through fall, head to downtown Jeffersonville’s RiverStage, a floating performance venue. It is docked on the Ohio River at the foot of Spring Street. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the terraced lawn, perfect for listening to local or regional bands. Just a few blocks away, the gazebo at Warder Park is home to the Concerts in the Park series, with everything from jazz to big band sounds. At downtown New Albany’s Bicentennial Park, listen to a wide mix of genres from bluegrass to tribute bands in the Summer Concert Series. The Ogle Center, at Indiana University Southeast, plays host to visiting musicians, orchestras, magicians, and the university’s music and theater departments.

Lose yourself in story when you attend a theater performance at venues like Clarksville Little Theatre, Derby Dinner Playhouse, and Actor’s Theatre of Louisville. At the professional

level, Clarksville’s Derby Dinner Playhouse is a regional favorite. The 2016 season includes “Into the Woods” and “Legally Blonde.” One of the best community theaters going is the Clarksville Little Theatre. The 2016 schedule includes plays by the likes of Arthur Miller and Mel Brooks. This year Kentucky Shakespeare will perform in two Southern Indiana locations.
Public Art
If you feel like wandering to take in the sights, you’ll have plenty of eye candy with the thriving public art scene in Jeffersonville and New Albany. In Jeffersonville, whimsical bicycle racks and creative Art Walk crosswalks greet pedestrians and bikers coming from the Big Four Bridge. WE Studio’s Michael Wimmer created uniqueshaped bike racks such as a bumble bee, steamboat, and a jack-in-the-box. New Albany’s public art program began in 2013 with a public art walk hosted by the Carn-
egie Center for Art and History. Artists interact with the public during these annual art walks to present their artistic vision.
Find your Inner Artist
Feeling creative? Head to Uptown Art in New Albany, where you can let your inner Picasso loose on your very own canvas. Instructor-led classes will help even the most artistically challenged paint a work worthy of wall hanging. And you can enjoy a glass of wine during the classes. Get crafty at Silica Ceramic Studio in Jeffersonville. The owners are brilliant artists and can help you paint, glaze, and create your own works of art. Across the street, Gadabout Gallery and Artisan Shoppe sells trendy, refurbished furniture, hats from a skilled milliner, handcrafted jewelry, notecards, and more.

In Jeffersonville, you’ll see terraced lawn and trails that trace the Ohio River’s edge. Clarksville’s segment passes through the Falls of the Ohio State Park. New Albany’s Greenway connects you to the Loop Island Wetlands and passes the city’s amphitheater. It provides spectacular views of the Sherman Minton Bridge, and the McAlpine Lock and Dam complex. Charlestown State Park
Hikes range from easy to challenging. The trails overlook Fourteen Mile Creek and the Ohio River. There are interpretive programs, hiking, camping, and a boat launch on the Ohio River. You’ll also find the Rose Island Exhibit, a former amusement park that Louisvillians flocked to in the Roaring ‘20s. When river levels are low, you can walk onto 390-millionyear-old Devonian fossil beds – one of the world’s largest. Use your imagination to conjure visions of the sea that once covered the beds. Not sure what you’re looking for? Make sure to visit the Falls of the Ohio’s newly opened Interpretive Center. The center’s interactive exhibits will take you through “time tunnels,” and the puzzles will help you piece together the area history. Even if you’ve been to the Falls’ Interpretive Center in the past, you’ll want to return. These new exhibits will give you a completely new experience.
