Notes from the

MEMBERS FORUM

Wallsend members were deeply saddened at the loss of their esteemed Past President, Life Member and Patron, Mary Gray. Mary joined the club in August 1964 and enjoyed her bowls. Mary was a Past President and became Life Member in 1983, and later became Patron for her tireless contribution to the club. Members formed a Guard of Honour at Mary’s funeral held on July 5, 2012. Mary was 91 years of age.

Windsor members were saddened at the loss on July 21, 2012 of Life Member Barbara Gray aged 88 years. Coming to Windsor in 1974, Barbara won many Club Championships and represented the club in Pennants over many years. Barbara was President in 1978-1980. Even when ill health stopped her playing the game she loved, she still came to all Club and Championship days to support her fellow members. A kind lady who was always there to help and who never had a bad word for anyone. Her smile and friendliness will be sadly missed.

clubs. Essential to embrace new ideas and opportunities – think of the past but plan for the future. - BA logo on clothing funds the Community Development Officers so is put to very good use. - Shorter games may help with afternoon or evening games for working women, it is up to the clubs to make use of these changes. - Eliminate the formality for new players — no interviews or posting of names on noticeboards. Do not strictly enforce the uniform code to start with, above all don’t embarrass them, make the new members feel welcome and wanted so that they will bring their friends. - Introductory coaching is a great way to introduce new members to bowling. Kingscliff has trained its bar staff as introductory coaches which has led to a dozen new members.

A

major discussion point to come out of the Members Forum was the possibility of reducing costs for District Pennants and Championships. Players are concerned regarding the increasing costs when participating at District level, where the cost of lunch is included with green fees and any other associated costs imposed by the Districts or venue Clubs. The suggestion was made by members present at the Forum, whose Districts have cut out compulsory lunches after Pennants and District Championships, to have them an option as decided by Clubs, Sides or Districts generally. In some Clubs, sides/teams indicate in the morning how many will be requiring catering for lunch and payment is made for those wishing to stay and those that do not pay, leave shortly after the games have concluded. This increased expense exists in

Clubs used as venues, where no food can be consumed on the premises that have not been purchased in the Club, which is all Clubs that have contract caterers. While this may seem to detract from the social side of the competitive game, many players have various restraints on their time and finances and a more flexible option is something that could be considered in all Districts. This is only a suggestion for Clubs and Districts to consider and not a ruling, and may take some time to be accepted by the rank and file players and officials, and the decision of the majority must prevail. The payment of catering costs that cover morning tea/lunch and green fees is not mandatory until State Playoffs for all Championships and Pennants and Regional Playoffs as outlined in the Conditions of Play for Association Events.
