The week ended with our selfie competition judging, where James Jeong won for his awesome selfie (accompanied by a shar k and redbull dr ink), although many par ticipants –students and professors alike -- showed amazing enthusiasm in their pic tures. The enthusiasm continued to S aturday night, when we ended the week with a big bang—The Full M oon Par t y. D espite some rainy weather, students and fr iends made for a great tur nout at Dania B each’s Q uar terdeck on the Pier. With the full moon over the ocean in sight, ever yone glowed with paint and neon. O verall, NSU’s First Annual Ultimate ASDA Week was a hit, with hundreds of students par ticipating in fun events on behalf of ASDA all week! We hope to make it a tradition and keep it alive, with even bigger expec tations for nex t year and for the following years to come! With the energy demonstrated this year, we have no doubt that we can keep the tradition alive.

Swinging for Smiles

B y : B r ian n a M ast r ian n i ‘ 1 8

The 3rd Annual Swinging for Smiles Charity Golf Tournament was held November 7th, 2015 at Bonaventure Country Club in Weston, FL. The tournament benefits Give Kids A Smile, an annual event put on at NSU CDM that provides free dental care for local children. The tournament also helps fund trips for NSU Dental Missions, allowing dental students to provide care in various underserved areas. The tournament had thirteen four-person teams that participated, including current NSU students, alumni, faculty, and local practicing dentists. A social happy hour and a putting contest were part of the day’s activities, as well as a dinner and raffle giveaway that took place after the tournament. The winning team included a second year dental student, Stephan Norton, with a score of 60. Among our largest sponsors were Great Expressions Dental Centers and the Broward Center for Laser Periodontics and Implants. We would like to sincerely thank our sponsors for their support. Without it, we would not be able to hold events that allow us to serve our local community and many others

D5 Does Disney C h ri stopher Na glier i ‘18

What a magical weekend it was for NSU-CDM at the annual District 5 ASDA meeting in Orlando, Fl. ASDA members and guest speakers from around the country joined together to share their life experiences and knowledge of current issues in dentistry. Our very own NSU alumni Jason Watts gave us his insight on what “Focus” means to him and how he is adjusting to his exciting new career in private practice. There was even an answer to an age-old question in Adam Saltz’s presentation titled, “How Periodontal Disease Can Ruin Your Sex life.” To end this weekend of amazing speakers, we were all touched and motivated by our inspirational keynote speaker Morris Morrison as he took us through his life experiences and how we, as future dentists, can make a huge impact in the world. Though the weekend was jam packed with educational speakers, it was not all work as members spent an evening traveling the world at Disney’s EPCOT theme park with guest appearance from the one and only Mickey Mouse. I think it is safe to say the Disney magic was in all of us this year.

Pre - D e nt al Day Jessica Nguyen, UCF Predental ’18

My first time at NSU ASDA’s Pre-Dental Day was incredible. I fell in love with not only the beautiful campus, but also the amazing community. Speaking on behalf of the University of Central Florida Pre-Dental Student Association, we absolutely enjoyed our time there. We felt so welcomed by NSU’s student body. Meeting so many dental students that have gone through the process was extremely helpful because they were ready to share their countless amounts of tips and advices on the DAT, application process, and interviews. It is easy for anyone to go online and learn about a school from the description, but to have knowledge about the campus on a personal level is an aspect that you will not find online. The dental students were above and beyond excited for all of our questions and they were so willing to help us. Learning about the application process, meeting the dean of admissions, practicing mock interviews, and practicing hands-on clinical work was a great experience. We had an in depth Q & A’s with the dean of admissions who was so open to answering all types of questions. Watching other volunteers participate in the mock interview really opened our eyes on what we need to prepare for. We practiced doing wax-ups which happened to be incredibly challenging but addicting to keep trying to make it perfect. We also learned how to make impressions and models. One of the UCF PDSA member, Emyli Peralta comments on her experience of the trip saying, “It was one of the most enjoyable experiences that I have had with dentistry. All of the dental students there were incredibly friendly and excited about our presence. We learned about the application process from D3’s and D4’s that knew the ins and outs of the entire process and explained to us how we could strengthen our applications. Overall, I loved the educational aspect of the event, the hands-on experience, and getting to meet the delightful student body at NSU”. Personally, one of the most important things I learned from this trip is to never give up. Some of the most successful members in NSU ASDA chapter did not get into dental school their first time. Some not even their second attempt. They did not let those obstacles get in the way of the career they wanted to pursue the most, which I found admirable and inspirational They showed us that success is determined by how much you can learn from your failures. Each time they were rejected, they used it as fuel to work harder to get into dental school. Ironically, the ones that tend to go through the most obstacles to get into dental school ends up being the one doing the best in their class because they appreciate their acceptance a lot more since it took so much effort to finally get accepted so when they got in, they continue to work extremely hard to finish what they started. Overall, I would highly recommend all pre-dental students to take advantage of workshops like these because it gives you more insight about the school on a personal level, hands-on clinical work, and allows you to network with dental students. Thank you NSU ASDA for putting your time and effort to making this event happen for all the pre-dentals. All the pre-dentals from UCF learned so much out of it and appreciate all the hard work that you do.

As I reflect on the article I wrote before the semester began, I am reminded of how much this entire experience means to me. This semester, there have been many times that I have felt beaten down and tired. At times, I have even been reluctant show up, but there is one thought that keeps me going: I am living my dream out every day. We all know how much effort we put into getting into dental school, and now we are here. No matter how bad things get, no matter how tired we are, we are working towards achieving our dreams. The best part is that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel; you could even count on one hand the years left (for us aspiring general dentists at least--those who desire specialties can use both hands). I look forward to getting to know anyone who I haven’t spent a lot of time with, and I hope you are all pumped about finishing out the year!

Go o d to Great By:Jim Co ll ins

“Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don’t have great schools, principally because we have goodschools. We don’t have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in larg e par t b e ca u s e i t i s ju s t s o ea s y to s ettle fo r a g o o d l if e” Jim Collin aims to determine the factors which differentiate good from great companies by studying“6,000 articles, generated more than 2,000 pages of interview transcripts and created 384 megabytes of computer data in a five-year project”.Although the book starts off a bit technical and slow after the first few chapters you realize that the insights brought forward are sometimes very surprising and counter-intuitive. Findings such as Level 5 leaders, First Who, then what, and finding your Hedge hog concept crucial to separating your practice from others.
