Readers Choice 2022 | It is my pleasure to welcome you to the North Shore News’ annual Readers’ Choice Awards! As you may recall, we extended online voting to happen throughout the entire month of November. You, our loyal readers, cast your votes, recognizing the best businesses, restaurants, people and places throughout the North Shore. This year we set a new record in receiving over 7,500 ballots. While our poll may not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation from our community does lend credibility to the outcome, as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify ballots. Each ballot must have contained a minimum number of categories voted on – and only one ballot per IP address was accepted. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the winners and finalists of the 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards. They are most deserving of our recognition as the favourites on the Shore. THRILLED TO BE YOUR FAVOURITE SINCE 2017 “We’re so excited!” says Little Pink Door Boutique Founder and Owner Colette Bennett. “This is a true testament to our customers, we have such incredible support from awesome women, and we consider them our friends,” she says. “I have the best job in the whole world.” LPD is a carefully curated selection of women’s clothing, jewelry, and accessories, all geared unapologetically to the stylish mature market. “I’ve always loved clothes, but disliked the shopping experience,” says
Bennett. “I noticed that as I was getting older, my body was changing, therefore styles I loved weren’t fitting properly. I think there is absolutely a market for women who have style, are unique, and looking for something with personality.” With a loyal customer base that continues to grow every year since this charming boutique opened in 2016, fans of the shop trust Bennett and her team, and continued to support even during the toughest part of 2020 for any brick-and-mortar retailer. Online
shopping came about here due to the pandemic, out of necessity as LPD clients were concerned that their favourite boutique would not survive like so many retailers, and e-commerce was a way they could continue to shop. Fun videos are posted on our social media feeds and website, and ‘our customers love it because they can relate to how clothing fits on us and will on them.” Now with the store open regular business hours, the popular labels are Charlie B for “fantastic dresses, tops, and sweaters.” Great jeans that are affordable? That would be “Liverpool denim,” says Bennett. “It took us a bit to find the right brand, that combines price point, quality and style, with most jean styles under $100, Liverpool hit the mark.”
Cream, a clothing label from Scandinavia, has been another customer favourite, as is Merx Jewelry being “well priced, are easy add-ons, and great gifts.” In the last two years LPD expanded their experience to include gifting with a focus on gifts for women. Cedar Mountain from Salt Spring is one example offering “beautiful, inspirational blocks.” In keeping with supporting women, and not just with their body-positive inclusivity at the store level, LPD continues to partner with the Sage Transition House Program with the North Shore Crisis Services Society. “I have a great team of women who are part of the business in every way,” adds Bennett. “This award means a lot to us.”

IT ALL STARTS WITH GOOD INGREDIENTS “We are so thankful and honored to be part of the North Shore business community since 2010,” says co-owner Lino Pucci. “We have built a family-run business founded by passion and love for food and community.” Lino and his sister, Maria Colodey, own and operate Puccini’s, an Italian & Mediterranean deli which offers a wide selection of cured meats, cheeses, coffee, and gourmet ingredients. Known for its high-end, quality products, including pizza dough made fresh daily, Lino tells us that “customers come from all over to have our pizza dough and delicious toppings. Families have created weekly traditions that we are so grateful to say we have made possible.”

Customer loyalty is no longer just a given when any retail business opens its doors, no matter how long those doors have been open, keeping customers coming back takes hard work. Puccini’s believes their customers are loyal because “we provide the highest level of customer service combined with offering high quality products. This has always been the key focus to our business,” says Lino.
Puccini’s regular customers praise the innovative product sourcing, catering options, charcuterie boards, paninis and pizza dough. The variety of hard-to-find, curated products that would delight any food enthusiast is impressive; with Italian candies, chocolates, pastas (including gluten-free options), and pantry staples like balsamic vinegars, antipastos and more making shopping here like a visit to Italy – without the flight. Plus, who needs Eataly when we have Puccini’s?
He believes part of that service is providing product knowledge passed on from staff to customer and aiming to keep

With over 12 years in business, Puccini’s has grown from a small shop to their existing flagship store, which is triple in size from when they started. Soon to be launched this year is frozen pizza dough, made with a secret recipe from Aunt Cecilia, and will be found in over 200 groceries stores in BC. “We are so excited about this next venture,” Lino says. “Aunt Cecilia’s pizza dough is made the oldfashioned way with Italian Tipo 00 flour, premium olive oil and only natural ingredients. We can’t wait for everyone to try!”

Hatch and his crew all take pride in being recognized by the community and North Shore News readers for “what they set out to do a while back and maintaining that level of service.” The company focuses primarily on
residential renovations, many of them large scale and custom. The pandemic initially affected their project load in 2020 like so many other small businesses, but 2021 picked up and 2022 they are “definitely slated to have our busiest year yet” Hatch says. Is Twin Lions noticing any patterns in what homeowners are looking to do presently? “We are seeing lots of larger scale projects, with clients realizing the cost of acquisition to move into a new home, to shift either sideways or up (as the market has just gone bananas)
Shore – one on Lonsdale and the other in Lynn Valley. “As a team, collectively, we all are making the advancement, combining efforts, and all growing in the same direction,” Peters says. Kevin Hatch, owner of Twin Lions Contracting, says the “the coolest thing is the consistency,” when it comes to winning this award for the past 5 years. The business has been operating for 11 years, with “a majority of our company living on the North Shore and 95% of our clients based here.”

means that reinvesting in their existing homes is a good idea.” Hatch tells us that clients are finding ways to make their homes more functional, with advice from Twin Lions. “Clients are either doing a full refresh, gutting it and getting everything new from their older homes – or having an addition made, like a basement suite.” Factors to consider? “It’s so expensive to buy new, to sell what you bought and shift sideways, it is still $100,000+ to take into account realtor fees, transfer taxes, movers, lawyers – literally just to move sideways,” he says. So, in the spirit of ‘loving it’ vs. ‘listing it’, Hatch and his team make it their mission to be transparent with their clients and give them a great experience. “It is a stressful process for most people, who
are investing the most money they are ever going to invest. It’s disruptive and there is a lot of decisions to make, so we strive to make it easy and ultimately fun.” Active in the North Shore community, with involvement in the Lynn Valley Community Association, North Shore Disability Resource Centre, The Capilano Rugby Club and more, has surely influenced how the company is singled out for its give-back approach. “Social responsibility is a massive part of our business,” says Hatch. Hatch was included in Business in Vancouver’s 40 Under 40 Awards in 2021, and North Vancouver Chamber’s “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award.
