Founded in 1956 and now based at 1070 Roosevelt Cres. in North Vancouver, today’s members of North Shore ConneXions Society are proud of the services the organization continues to provide throughout the community. Originally formed by a group of parents who were advocating for better services for their children with intellectual disabilities, ConneXions has evolved into an organization that provides a wide variety of support services for children, adults and their families who are facing the challenges that arise from intellectual disabilities.

Our Focus

The Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation, established in 2013, provides supportive and palliative care to those living with advancing, serious illness, as well as to their families and caregivers. Our primary goal is to provide hope, encouragement and emotional support during illness, death and loss. Our vision is that no one endures serious illness without respect, dignity and comfort.

Our People

We are a registered charity, with a volunteer board of directors, a small staff and a dedicated group of volunteers who bring time, experience, love and compassion to those in need in our community.

Facts

Those living with, and dying from, a serious illness have many varied and individual needs. Our health-care system focuses more on the medical needs. The nonmedical needs are not always adequately addressed. People often ﬁnd themselves adrift in the system, not knowing which way to turn, not knowing what supports and resources are available to them and feeling isolated and alone. We listen, we guide, we support, we care. The Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation is an independent organization, funded exclusively by the community through individual donations. The PSPS Foundation funds and operates the Palliative Support Centre, which has been open for three years. In those three years and prior to its opening, the PSPS Foundation and the Palliative Support Centre have provided care to hundreds of people in our community.

Participation by the community is an essential part of our plan to grow and reach a wider group of those in need. Our Work in the Community

The Palliative Support Centre in North Vancouver’s Delbrook Plaza, provides individuals with a community ‘home,’ where their needs are addressed in a respectful, sensitive and timely manner. It is a place to call, providing a sense of security and continuity in the face of difﬁculties. A place where individuals are known, accepted and heard in a familiar and warm environment and where they will be given the time they need. Our programs are vehicles through which individuals in need connect with others in similar situations and with volunteers. Supportive personal relationships are established. Our trained volunteers are available to accompany individuals through illness, death and loss. This can include transportation to and from medical appointments, companionship, personal connection and emotional support. In addition we provide information on and connection to available resources as well as much needed guidance and navigation of the complex medical system.

When I ﬁrst arrived at the Paul Sugar Palliative Support centre, I felt like I was stepping into a friend’s living room. The casual and welcoming environment immediately put me at ease, especially the homemade baked treats made with love by Frankie, one of the warm hearted, hard-working volunteers. The extraordinary team who are behind the workings of this foundation are actively supportive in ways that go above and beyond what I was expecting of this centre. It doesn’t matter where you are in your healing journey, you are treated with respect, compassion and tenderness. The many volunteers involved in various programs at the centre provide a caring and understanding approach, which has been so reassuring in my time of need. Dr. Marylene Kyriazis and Frankie tirelessly provide undivided attention and helpful advice to me when I am seeking answers to my many questions during my illness. The relaxation sessions allowed me peace and quiet when the world felt it was spinning around me. Participating in the support group has helped me to open up and share my story and

experiences in a safe and non-judgemental space while connecting with others in similar struggles. At the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Centre I have found comfort, guidance, love and most importantly, friendships. This has encouraged me to move forward in my healing journey with a sense of strength, conﬁdence and determination.

A recent story Mr. RB was referred to the PSPS Foundation after undergoing surgery for his Stage 4 metastatic laryngeal cancer. The surgery left him unable to speak. He lived alone, ﬁnances were tight, he was no longer able to work and had no transport. His disease was progressing, his needs were many and he had no family here to help and support him. The volunteers at the PSPS Foundation communicated with the B.C. Cancer Agency regarding follow-up treatment (chemo and radiation). They co-ordinated all his appointments with doctors and allied health care professionals, both at BCCA and Lions Gate Hospital. They provided transportation to and from all medical appointments and accompanied Mr. RB to these appointments, so as to ensure continuity. Since he was scheduled for four weeks of radiation treatment at the BCCA, the volunteers arranged lodging at the Jean Barber Lodge and obtained funding from the health ministry to pay for this lodging. RB’s appreciation of our efforts can be summed up by his comment: “If it wasn’t for Frankie, Marylene and Sue, I would have overdosed on fentanyl.” His dream was to reconnect with family in Europe, but his passport had expired. PSPS Foundation assisted with the passport application and corresponded with his family abroad. RB died suddenly from medical complications before his dream was realised.

In the past year, we cared for more than 9,000 individuals and families with respect through our low-barrier counselling and family programs. Our staff, volunteers and donors are committed to making a deep and lasting impact in our community by facilitating strong, caring connections between people and listening and responding to the needs of the most vulnerable.

Our key programs and services are focused on parenting, mental health, volunteer engagement and reducing gender-based violence and vulnerability in our community.

Our Work in the Community

Christmas Bureau – A program that brings hope and joy to low-income families, individuals, seniors and persons with disabilities during the holidays. Individual, Couple and Family Counselling – A counselling program which supports adults who are struggling through mental health issues, conﬂict, grief, divorce, and other lifechanging events. Child and Youth Counselling and Prevention – A counselling program for children and youth for a range of issues including anxiety, depression, sexual abuse, bullying, school stress, sexuality and coming out, gender identity and sexual orientation, suicidal thoughts, cutting, eating disorders and body image, dating violence, self-esteem and more. Stopping the Violence – A counselling program for women who have experienced relationship abuse, sexual assault and/or physical, emotional or sexual abuse as a child. I hope family centre – A play-based program that helps parents, caregivers and children from newborn to six years of age connect in healthy and secure ways. Family Preservation and Support – A community counselling program which provides intensive in-home support to reduce risk to children, strengthens the capacity of parents’ care for their children and helps reunify families when their child/ children have been placed in a temporary foster home. Jessie’s Legacy – An eating disorder prevention program that provides education, resources and inspiration to prevent eating disorders and addresses disordered eating. Companioning Community Care – A community-based volunteer program, which offers on-site and in-home programs for adults living with terminal illness, bereavement, disability or the severe effects of cancer treatment. Allies in Aging – A collective impact initiative that connects nearly 30 partner agencies to prevent and address isolation among Lower Mainland seniors.

“Extending a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out” is our mission. We reach out to families and individuals experiencing serious life challenges. We channel community resources to provide coaching, counselling, groceries and clothing that supports more than 600 people each month. We help people reconnect with jobs, school and wellness.

Our People

Harvest Project looks to more than 900 volunteers (2017) plus a small staff to bring time, effort and expertise. Students, professionals, retirees, organizational teams all serve as volunteers.

Facts

Together, we can positively impact the lives of hundreds of our most vulnerable neighbours and the health of the whole community. This past year, we provided more than 4,600 coaching and drop-in sessions, food valued at $750,000 plus 9,000 clothing items. 19,000 volunteer hours were contributed.

Our Work in the Community

While the North Shore is known as one of the more prosperous communities in Canada, critical family resources can be scarce for those ﬁnding themselves in desperate times. Harvest Project provides a safety net for those in need. Clients are often single parents, newer residents and those dealing with catastrophic or chronic health issues. Several thousand households are struggling and forced to go without food, medicine or dental care just to remain in their apartments or homes. Most are only one more unexpected bill, illness, family crisis or job loss away from being forced into homelessness. We are a grassroots organization funded by households, businesses, churches, foundations, and other community organizations, with about 3 per cent of funding from municipal governments.

A Recent Story

Ann came to Harvest Project, marginalized, having suffered a traumatic accident that left her ﬁnancially ruined and mentally exhausted: “The kindness, compassion and non-judgemental understanding, along with all the other supports, enabled me to ﬁnd the strength to re-blossom.”

Social issues are complex. They impact a considerable number of individuals within a community and are usually out of a person’s control. Fundamental to our mission to provide unique services in response to existing and emerging community social issues, Hollyburn Family Services Society has been supporting the North Shore’s most vulnerable youth, seniors and families since 2004 through collaborative and innovative programming.

Our People

Led by our executive director Nanette Taylor, our eight board of directors, and a small team of 30 staff, we bring a relentless commitment to addressing social issues in our community guided by our values: Serve with Integrity, Honour Diverse Perspectives, Nurture a Community of Caring, and Lead the Way.

We exist because social issues like poverty, senior and youth homelessness and domestic violence are prevalent in our community.

Our Work in the Community

25 per cent of the homeless population is elderly and the North Shore has the highest number of homeless youth per capita. We exist as an organization because poverty is an underlying factor to many of the issues we encounter, including homelessness being the result of unaffordable and unavailable housing. Factors exist in our community that marginalize youth and domestic violence crosses all incomes, cultures and neighbourhoods. In our 2017-18 ﬁscal year we supported more than 900 of our most vulnerable neighbours, and with the support of our partners and funders we made a difference. Speciﬁcally: 156 homeless youth were provided with housing and shelter – 42 marginalized youth enrolled in post-secondary programs – 36 youth overcame their barriers to employment – 32 former foster care youth successfully transitioned to the community – 45 at-risk students remained in high school – 418 children, women and men received the support to recover from the impact of domestic violence – 179 homeless seniors and seniors at risk of losing housing received more than 400 services.

Our Focus

To raise $100 million and bring life-changing care to the North Shore with the building of a high-tech Medical & Surgical Centre. $95 million has been raised to date!

Our People

Our small team works with more than 300 dedicated volunteers including a volunteer board, staff ambassadors and community supporters to enhance patient care at all publicly-funded health-care facilities on the North Shore.

Facts

LGH has one of only ﬁve neurosurgery centres in B.C., is a recognized Level 3 trauma centre and is home to a Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Last year, more than 170,000 babies, children and adults received care at LGH.

Our Work in the Community

Lions Gate Hospital Foundation invests your donations in new facilities, enhanced infrastructure and medical technology to bridge the gap between what the government can provide and what our community needs right now. Last month the Foundation celebrated the opening of the ﬁrst and only palliative care hub in B.C. The new facilities at the expanded North Shore Hospice provide clinical and nonmedical support services that will enrich outpatient palliative care for hundreds of patients and their families. In September this year, a ﬂuoroscopy and digital X-ray unit was added to the medical imaging department at LGH. The state-of-the-art machine is used to treat patients with spine or joint injuries and illness and patients who require guided biopsies and stomach and bowl examinations. Other milestones in 2018 include a redeveloped atrium and registration area and the purchase of more than $400,000 in life-saving equipment.

A recent story

West Vancouver teen Denis Tuck was playing in a hockey tournament when he was hit hard from behind. A week later he collapsed at school and was taken by ambulance to LGH’s emergency department. His spleen had burst and he was bleeding internally. Emergency staff reacted quickly to diagnose the problem and he was prepped and ready for surgery the same afternoon. The surgeon was able to save his spleen which has since regrown and he has made a full recovery.

Our Focus

North Shore Crisis Services Society has been providing services to abused women and children on the North Shore for more than 39 years. Our mission is to promote a secure and abuse-free environment for women and children. NSCSS makes a vital, non-judgmental and compassionate contribution to the spectrum of social services available to residents in our beautiful North Shore communities.

Achievements

North Shore Multicultural Society provides information to immigrants to assist them in achieving full, active and equal participation in Canadian life. Newcomers receive settlement and employment support, English language training, and a variety of other services to help them settle and connect to the community. We are dedicated to building a harmonious and inclusive North Shore community that helps immigrants and refugees integrate successfully into life in Canada.

We are led by a 12-member volunteer Board of Directors. We have more than 60 skilled staff members and 175 volunteers from various cultural backgrounds who are able to provide services in multiple languages.

A small, creative, and energetic staff team supports executive director, Nancy Cottingham Powell. A Board of Directors oversees governance, strategic planning, and vision. The organization is supported by more than 500 members and 100 dedicated volunteers. Membership includes artists, supporters, cultural groups, and businesses.

Facts

Major accomplishments include: establishment of the ﬁrst heritage committee in North Vancouver; preservation of Presentation House Arts Centre (1976); facilitating Visions of the North Shore (2000); instrumental in creating CityScape Community Art Space (2001); and spearheading the North Shore Cultural Mapping Project (2020).

Our Work in the Community

North Van Arts is a social-proﬁt, charitable cultural organization dedicated to maximizing the intrinsic value of the arts in all disciplines. We offer arts education in varying formats varying; we organize cultural events: North Shore Art Crawl (March) and Art in the Garden (May); we present more than 30 art exhibitions at four locations, displaying the work of more than 1400 artists annually; we present 14 ﬁlms each year through the North Shore International Film Series (since 2003); we manage an art rental programme; support a music therapy program at Mountainside Secondary; and present special projects with partners such as Art & Mycology with the North Vancouver School District.

A recent story

We changed our brand name from the North Vancouver Community Arts Council to North Van Arts. Since 1969 we have been serving the North Shore, evolving and responding to the needs and desires of the community. We wanted a name that says who we are, what we do, and where we operate.

Events

Upcoming: 2019 Anonymous Art Show opens Thursday, Nov. 22, 7-9:30 p.m., sale continues to Dec. 15. All artwork is $100, with revenue shared equally by North Van Arts and the artist. Annually we raise more than $25,000 for our organization and participating artists. You Are Here Calendar 12 North Shore images by 12 local artists. Calendars are $20 each and sales support the North Shore Cultural Mapping project.
