Welcome! I’ve had the privilege to work, live and play here on the North Shore. I’ve hiked its forests, swam in the rivers, skied on the mountains and kayaked the coves. I love going for coffee on weekends with my dog Dakota, or discovering a new ethnic restaurant and running into someone I know. I hope you will be inspired by the articles and experiences in the pages of our magazine so that you can enjoy and share the culture, people and environment of North Shore Living, too. BY KENDALL WALTERS

R

achel Jones is no stranger to playing in the big leagues. The talented 18-year-old’s very first experience playing soccer found her joining players several years her senior. Her older brother Max was playing in a soccer camp and little four-year-old Rachel wanted to play too. The coach didn’t object, so she made her way out onto the field. A few years later, Jones finally got to join a team of her own. But she didn’t stop there. Over the years, she’s worked her way up through the North Shore soccer scene, until finally, as a player for Mountain United FC, she was called up to the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite team in 2012 – one of only three underage players from the Lower Mainland who were asked to join the team that year. “I was so surprised,” she says. “It was great to play with the older girls because they raised our game up so much. It helped me get to the next step.” Not long after joining the Whitecaps, Jones was co-named Most Promising Player of the Year. Playing with the Whitecaps has led to many other incredible opportunities, according to Rachel’s mom Karen.

8 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

“They play at such a high level,” she says. “If you’re constantly exposed to players that are playing at such a high level it pushes you to be better.” That’s precisely what happened for Jones. Because of her involvement with the Whitecaps, she’s attended dozens of soccer camps all over the world – often playing with women several years her senior, but managing to hold her own. Only a year after joining the team, Jones had one of her best years to date. Amid a flurry of high-profile soccer camps, she and her team won the Gothia Cup World Youth Cup championship in Sweden. Close on the heels of that win, she played for Team B.C. when they took gold at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. “They were just incredible experiences, obviously very nerve wracking at times, but just such surreal experiences,” says Jones. Then she got the opportunity of a lifetime when Team Canada came calling. Rachel played in the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in 2013. Canada won silver and Jones was selected for the Tournament All Star team.

Later, in 2014, she represented her country a second time in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, where her team made it to the quarter finals. “It was such an honour . . . to step on the field and say I played for Team Canada,” she says. “It was like a dream come true.” Luckily for Jones, hard work and dedication means the dreams just keep coming true. She’ll be graduating from Sutherland secondary later this year and heading off to Oregon State University, where she’s been offered a four-year scholarship and a place in the university’s NCAA Division 1 Soccer Program. “I’m going to be sad leaving the Whitecaps, but Oregon’s going to be a new start,” she says. “I’m really pumped about it.” One thing’s for sure: Rachel’s career is certainly one to watch.

Fusion Eatery

Livens Up

Lower Lonsdale BY KENDALL WALTERS

A

n innovative fusion eatery in Lower Lonsdale aims to bring the downtown entertainment scene to the North Shore. Husband and wife team Ali and Jessica Naghibi opened Finch & Barley in May 2012. Serving Middle Eastern-inspired fare with a twist, Finch & Barley has attracted a diverse crowd, which was exactly the idea. “We wanted to make it approachable for non-Middle Easterns,” says Jessica. “We wanted it to be welcoming for everyone.” You’ll find classic pub favourites revamped with a Middle-Eastern flair – like their popular Lamb Gravy Poutine – alongside more traditionally MiddleEastern eats like flatbreads and vegetarian moussaka. The Naghibis have also cultivated a decidedly unique drink list – with invented cocktails such as Bombay Fresh and Basil Sour – to complement their already distinctive menu. Jessica says she’s noticed lots of Persian restaurants on the North Shore, but none doing what Finch & Barley is. With their menu, they aimed to create mild alternatives of old favourites so that the food wouldn’t feel so intimidating to people who’d never tried Persian cuisine before.

“We wanted to bring something to the North Shore that we hadn’t seen here yet,” says Jessica. “We both grew up on the North Shore, which was nice because we had a lot of support in the beginning from family and friends and people we went to school with.” At first glance, Finch & Barley’s location – in the midst of a semiindustrial area – seems an odd choice, but, like their menu, it was a very deliberate move towards doing something different. “We can have live bands without disturbing our neighbours,” says Jessica. Their location means that the Naghibis can bring in the live entertainment they loved in their time as residents of downtown Vancouver to the North Shore – no SeaBus required. Jessica says they wanted to make it convenient for North Vancouverites. “(Now) they can have fun on this side all night!” Finch & Barley features live music every Thursday night, rotating DJs on Fridays and Saturdays and a comedy act on the first Sunday of every month. Check out their menu and learn more about upcoming events on their website at finchandbarley.com or visit in person at 250 East First St.

B.C. boys have spirit(s)

I

nnovation is the name of the game at North Vancouver’s newest craft distillery, where founders James Lester and Richard Klaus have cooked up an idea the liquor world hasn’t seen before – chili vodka. Yes, you read that right: chili vodka. Crafted from Thai dragon chilies, Sons of Vancouver’s signature spicy spirit is their most polarizing product – and that’s a good thing. “We really got into this to do stuff that wasn’t being done,” says Lester. “Chili vodka is just a product that you can’t get. It doesn’t exist.” Well, it didn’t until now. The boys invented the spirit while on a vindaloo-eating kick. They craved more spice and thought chili vodka would be the perfect way to get it. They say it makes a great addition to a classic Caesar (just skip the Tabasco sauce) or that the discerning palette need only add pineapple juice for a simple – yet spicy – cocktail. In addition to their chili vodka, they also produce regular vodka and amaretto. While craft brewing in B.C. has exploded in popularity over the past few

12 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

years, craft distilling is only just getting started. With their newly opened Sons of Vancouver Distillery, Lester and Klaus have gotten in on the ground floor of the growing industry, where they hope to create a community every bit as vibrant and supportive as the one surrounding B.C. craft beer. As with the province’s craft brewing, Lester and Klaus are pushing boundaries of taste and flavour to create innovative new products. The pair met while working as tradesmen in Fort St. John. They soon transferred their process control knowledge to home brewing and quickly realized their lifestyle wasn’t making them happy. So, they did what any rational twentysomethings would do: they retired. “(We) worked up in the bush, trading our lives for dollars,” says Klaus. “Once we ‘retired’ (we) decided we weren’t going to do anything we didn’t want to do again.” Both travelled and bartended, Lester in Australia and Klaus in South America. When they returned to Canada, they

moved to Vancouver with the aim of opening their own distillery. Over the course of numerous trips to Seattle, which has a thriving craft distilling scene, the pair learned from other distillers and worked on their own recipes. Before opening their own distillery, they’d hop in Klaus’ Ford Focus, filled with 300 pounds of soft white spring wheat and drive to Seattle to turn it into vodka. They soon decided it was time to open their own distillery, so they ran a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo to help make their dream a reality. The guys raised enough funds to meet their goal and on March 14 they held their grand opening. Though they joke that their distillery is “really, really small batch,” it’s clear that these two B.C. boys are living their dream. Check out Sons of Vancouver online at sonsofvancouverdistillery.ca or visit them in person at 1431 Crown St. Samples are always free – try the chili vodka, if you dare…

Gulf Island getaways BY KENDALL WALTERS

W

ith stunning views, abundant natural beauty and quirky charm to spare – B.C.’s Gulf Islands are a quiet paradise within easy reach of the city. At first glance, these seemingly sleepy island communities have only quiet to offer, but quite the opposite is true: the Gulf Islands have drawn creative types from all over, creating vibrant artist communities. No trip to the Gulf Islands is complete without a visit to one of the many markets, featuring local artists, artisans and food producers. Each island boasts its own individual attractions – Saltspring, as the largest, has the most amenities, including a growing culinary scene, Mayne’s natural harbours have given the island a unique history unlike its neighbours and Gabriola’s conservancy has created an extensive network of trails. From nature hikes and cycling, to beach days and whale watching, artist studio tours to watersports and vibrant culture to simple solitude, there’s a wide range of available pursuits. Whether visitors stay put or island hop, B.C.’s Gulf Islands have plenty to offer.

1 GABRIOLA ISLAND

PHOTO DON BUTT

For those who like to explore on foot, Gabriola Island is an ideal vacation spot. The island boasts one of the most extensive trail systems of any of the Gulf Islands, looked after by the Gabriola Land and Trails Trust. Arbutus Bluff Bed and Breakfast is conveniently located across the street from one of the major trail networks at 707 Park, named for its 700 acres of natural beauty. Situated on 10 acres near the highest point of the island, the B&B offers panoramic views of the Salish Sea. For a true appreciation of the quiet solitude of the location, visitors should take a moonlit soak in the B&B hot tub and enjoy the vast expanse of open starry sky. Arbutus Bluff features both continental and hot entrée breakfast options, which can be ordered to suit dietary restrictions such as gluten-free. The B&B also allows visitors with dogs. Though there are many activities offered on the island, one of the most West Coast is a combination kayak-yoga excursion. Participants kayak to a quiet coastal island where they’re treated to a serene outdoor yoga session, then later kayak back.

2 GALIANO ISLAND

With beautiful beaches, Galiano Island is a great place for an ocean-side getaway. As the only fullexperience resort on the island, Galiano Island Oceanfront Inn & Spa is the perfect place to take in ocean views and breezes. Easy walking distance from the ferry, Galiano Inn boasts oceanfront dining with stunning views. It plays host to the Kunamokst mural – a large-scale art piece featuring a mother orca and calf. It was created by 190 different artists, each of whom was given a panel to complete – with instructions on colours and general outline – without knowing what the final piece would look like. Galiano Spa focuses on natural indigenous treatments, featuring organic products locally sourced from around the province. For a real treat, try the couple’s massage. It takes place in a private cottage next to a waterfall for soothing ambiance. Galiano Inn also has a fleet of Smart Cars – available for rental or as part of accommodation packages – for guests to explore the island.

3 SALTSPRING ISLAND

4 MAYNE ISLAND

As the most populous of the Gulf Islands, Saltspring gets the most visitors. With that traffic, the island has established itself as a great culinary destination, including wineries and a burgeoning food truck scene. Fine cuisine is one of the staples of Hastings House Country House Hotel, which brings the charm and warmth of the English cottage experience to the Gulf Islands. Situated on 22 acres in Ganges Harbour, Hastings House features beautiful ocean views as well as lovely gardens. The main building was originally constructed in 1939 by the Hastings Family. The hotel also offers a variety of guest cottage options. Hastings House is all about relaxation so all of the guest rooms have fireplaces and many feature reading rooms.Though curling up with a good book in front of a cosy fire is a favourite activity of guests, visitors shouldn’t miss a trip to the island cheesemakers – pick up some locallycrafted cheese and a bottle of wine, ask the hotel for some snacks and choose a quiet spot on the island for a picnic unlike any other.

With sheltered natural harbours galore, Mayne Island is a popular place for watersports, with kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding among visitor favourites. The most circular of the Gulf Islands, Mayne has a ring road that hugs the shoreline, making it easy to explore the island on a beautiful walk, bike ride or drive. Family-run Blue Vista Resort is the perfect base to launch a variety of activities from. Featuring nine cozy, self-contained cottages, each with its own kitchen and bathroom, Blue Vista works well for families who want flexibility in their accommodations. The closest beach is only 500 metres from the resort, down a set of stairs to a rocky shoreline. At low tide, it’s possible to loop right around the island without leaving the beach. A must see for visitors is Active Pass Lighthouse in Georgina Point Park. Built in 1885, the lighthouse has warned incoming ships about sharp reefs and rough waters in Active Pass for over 100 years. Visitors also shouldn’t leave out a visit to Miners Bay. The historic village takes its name from Mayne Island’s heyday, when the island served as an important supply stop for the 1850s Fraser Canyon Gold Rush.

5 PENDER ISLAND

PHOTO SUPPLIED

Originally one island, Pender was separated by a portage in 1903. Now, Pender Island actually consists of two separate islands – North and South Pender – joined by a bridge. For a getaway that’s both rustic and historic, visit Corbett House Country Inn on North Pender. Built 113 years ago by the owner of the island’s first store, Corbett House has been lovingly cared for by current owners John and Eve Pollard, who now operate it as a B&B-style retreat for visitors to Pender. Nestled in a beautiful valley close to Hope Bay, Corbett House sits in the centre of an apple orchard. Upon arrival, the hosts greet guests with a glass of champagne, which they serve on the porch on sunny days. Like many of the Gulf Islands, Pender is popular with bikers, who like cycling along the quiet country roads to fully discover the island. It is also home to an award-winning winery – Sea Star Estate Farm and Vineyard – that’s well worth the visit.

6 SATURNA ISLAND

For visitors itching to see some marine life, there’s no better place than Saturna Island. Saturna boasts great vantage points for land viewing of whales – particularly on the island’s East Point. Located on one of the quietest Gulf Islands, Saturna Island Lodge is a great place to unplug and relax. Featuring a licensed restaurant and bar as well as a large common room where guests can play games or watch movies, the Lodge isn’t short on entertainment. It also makes a perfect base for island adventures. Given that nearly half of Saturna belongs to the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, there’s no shortage of outdoor recreation. For a stunning view, visitors can climb Mount Warburton Pike. On a clear day, intrepid hikers can see the San Juan Islands. The island is also known for another – slightly more quirky – reason: its feral goat population comes close to outnumbering its human residents. No trip to Saturna is complete without at least one sighting of the island’s furry inhabitants!

Team Finn aims to change the story of childhood cancer

16 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

Since then, Team Finn has fundraised nearly $2.5 million for cancer research and treatment, with a focus on pediatric cancer. “Almost all pediatric cancer is rare,” says Sullivan. “Our focus is on childhood cancer . . . because we believe that it’s the best place to start.” Team Finn takes part in numerous events every year. In the next few months, they’ll don their recognizable pink jerseys to run in the BMO Vancouver Marathon in May and cycle in the Ride to Conquer Cancer in August. They’ll also be hosting their own event in June, the Kids for Kids Cancer Ride, now in its third year. It was important to Sullivan that Team Finn provide an outlet for Finn’s friends to support the cause. “A lot of events that happen give an opportunity for adults to participate, but there’s less so for kids,” he says. With Team Finn, Sullivan aims to give hope to children and their families

who’ve been diagnosed with so-called “incurable” forms of cancer like Finn’s. “We want to change the story,” he says. “We have raised funds that are starting to make a difference in people’s lives in real time. This is not going to be a problem that’s solved quickly. It’s not a problem that’s going to go away overnight. It’s a problem that requires patience and perseverance and persistence. We’ve had a good start.” To learn more about Team Finn and get involved, visit teamfinn.com.

R

un, jump, bounce, dance, sing, love, smile and ride – that’s Team Finn’s motto, emblazoned in friendly pink bubbles on the jerseys the groups wear for marathons and cycling fundraisers alike. They’re eight words inspired by a little boy whose passion for life never faltered, even in the face of a devastating diagnosis. Patrick Sullivan started Team Finn a few months after his three-year-old son, Finn, died of rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer, in October 2008. “He spent hours and days in hospitals going through treatments and chemotherapy,” says Sullivan. “What he never stopped being was a little boy with a zest for life.” Sullivan remembers Finn riding around hospital corridors in a toy car, the stand holding his IV bag trailing behind him. “He didn’t wallow in what he couldn’t, he focused on what he could,” says Sullivan. It’s that spirit that inspired Team Finn. A close family friend first suggested Sullivan put a team together to ride for Finn in the first Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2009.

Culture Commission Takes Public Art to Heart STORY AND PHOTO BY KENDALL WALTERS The steel beams of Douglas Senft’s “Cathedral” are meant to reflect the surrounding mountains. It is located at Waterfront Park.

N

orth Vancouver is home to more than 100 public art pieces, scattered across 13 distinct neighbourhoods. Some pieces are more noticeable than others, some more tucked away. Few North Vancouver residents will see them all in the regular course of their local travels. Public Art officer Lori Phillips and the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission would like to change that. “North Vancouver’s public art collection is a unique cultural asset that conveys interesting local stories, speaks to community values, and celebrates the physical environment,” says Phillips. “Our website makes the collection accessible.” In order to make that collection better known to the public, the Culture Commission has created an extensive online catalogue including public art offerings located in both the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver. The collection is searchable by piece title, artist, category, municipality and neighbourhood. There are three public art program

18 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

categories: civic, developer and community art. Civic pieces tend to appear in public spaces, such as parks, civic buildings and on streets, while developer art generally appears in private developments. Community public art provides a mechanism for residents and artists to collaborate. “All three programs work together to increase the public’s awareness and enjoyment of arts in everyday life,” says Phillips. But the culture commission has gone one step further than simply cataloguing information about the pieces – they’ve also begun to create self-guided walking tours, which make public art in a particular area more accessible. So far, there are downloadable maps and guides for art in Lower Lonsdale and Lynn Valley. The culture commission is working on more. Next up is the Spirit Trail. For an even more interactive experience, the culture commission has also created a program that integrates geocaching and public arts works so that local explorers can embark on an art lover’s adventure.

“Geocaching is one of the fastest growing adventure hobbies in the world today,” says Phillips. “By combining geocaching with a series of public art installations we have found a whole new audience for public art. The project has been a huge success with literally thousands of ‘cachers’ logging their visits to local public art sites each year.” However residents choose to enjoy North Vancouver’s public art collection – whether by stumbling upon it, planning a self-guided tour or making a game of the experience – the culture commission wants to ensure that every North Shore resident gets the opportunity to experience the area’s cultural gifts. “Art speaks to people in different ways and can evoke a wide range of responses,” says Phillips. “It is important that the public art collection be as diverse as the community it reflects.” To learn more about North Vancouver’s public art collection, download maps for self-guided tours or get more info about public art geocaching, visit artsoffice.ca.

Seafood Louie Salad INGREDIENTS (PER SERVING) 6 prawns 1 Tbsp. Thousand Island dressing ½ head baby Iceberg lettuce 1½ fl. oz. Thousand Island dressing 1 hard boiled egg (¾ inch diced)

¼ avocado (½ inch diced) 4 grape tomatoes (halved lengthwise) 1 tsp. chives (1/8 inch sliced) 1½ oz. Dungeness crab meat 2 strips bacon (¾ inch sliced)

Sauté prawns and set aside. Fry bacon and keep warm. Cut one head of cored and trimmed baby iceberg lettuce in half, directly through the core. Place 1 Tbsp. of Thousand Island dressing directly onto the bottom of the bowl and – using the underside of the ladle – spread into a three-inch circle.

Drizzle 1½ fl. oz. of Thousand Island dressing in, over and underneath the leaves, ensuring dressing is distributed evenly. Top salad in the following order (allowing them to fall evenly): 1 hardboiled egg, ¼ of an avocado, 8 grape tomato halves and 1 teaspoon of chives. Pile 1½ oz. Dungeness crab on top of the salad. Top with warm bacon and sautéed prawns. Serve and enjoy!

MOUNT OLYMPUS Local actor brings myths to life with Syfy starring role BY KENDALL WALTERS

G

old. Born and raised in Lynn Valley, Shiels moved away to the U.S. years ago to pursue his career as an actor. That career recently brought him home to star in sci-fi channel Syfy’s new show Olympus, which was shot in nearby Abbotsford. It reminded Shiels just how much he missed his West Coast hometown. “It really is one of the most beautiful, magical places,” he says. “Coming over one of the bridges – Second Narrows, Lions Gate – and seeing the mountains, that’s home to me.” Though he took drama in high school at Argyle secondary, it wasn’t until he went to Simon Fraser University for business administration that Shiels really realized that acting was his passion. “I was probably about 20 or 21 when I really knew this is what I had to do,” says Shiels. “I had to do this, otherwise it’d break my heart.” He started out auditioning for local theatres and then, later, TV shows. His first professional job was doing a kids show in Whistler. His first on-camera job was a small part on The X-Files. “I always wanted to go bigger,” he says. So he applied to the great theatre institutes and got into Yale School of Drama. He packed his bags and headed south. Three years in Connecticut, another in New York and Shiels was off to Hollywood. He acted as minor characters in numerous well-known TV shows and movies, including General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, CSI:NY, CSI: Miami, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, The Mentalist, True Blood, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and Yes Man. For Shiels, working with Jim Carrey on Yes Man is a career highlight. “He would do things 10 times in 10 different ways,” he says. “It was a great chance to watch a real star – a once in a generation talent – perform with no ego and really just go for it. It was amazing.” Shiels played the boyfriend of a woman Carrey’s character kisses in a bar. The scene escalates to a brawl in the alley.

protagonist as he seeks the truth about his past, which may be intertwined with the Gods themselves.” Shiels’s character, King Aegeus, is the protagonist’s father. “He’s a descendent of gods – literally – and he’s also the descendent of kings,” says Shiels. “He’s very prideful, but he’s a prideful man who’s now living in fear.” Show creator Nick Willing was a huge help for Shiels when he was working on character motivations. “It’s really about getting inside that fear – that fear of failure, that fear of humiliation, that fear of death,” says Shiels. “As an actor you have to personalize that: where in my life do I feel like a failure?” With a plot filled with drama played out against a brutal backdrop, Shiels says the show reminds him of another fantasy great. “It’s very like Game of Thrones,” he says. “Everybody’s competing for the throne – my throne. Everybody wants to be immortal, everybody wants to be a god and everybody wants to kill

“He was amazing to work with,” he says. “The scenes I was in with him were probably the funniest scenes in the movie, not because of what I was doing, but because of what he was doing.” Fast forward a few more years of hard work and now Shiels has his own chance to be a star. “Quite often I get typecast as the thugs, the bad guys, the supernatural freaks,” he says. “I never played a character that had a wife that he didn’t beat.” Which is one of many things that makes his role as King Aegeus on Syfy’s new Greek drama Olympus so special – he’s playing a character with real depth and complexity. “This is a tale about Greek heroism and tragedy,” he says. “We’re losing this war and that’s how the story starts.” Olympus delves deep into mythology according to Syfy’s tagline. “Olympus tells the story of how a few brave men and women banished the Gods to the realm of the unconscious – a place they called the Underworld or the Kingdom of Hades. The series follows the

each other. It’s all about power and independence and life… and going to the ends of the earth to purse that.” For Shiels, it really is a dream come true. “Acting is living in a fantasy world anyways and what better fantasy world to live in than this one?” Olympus began airing April 2. Catch it Thursdays at 10 p.m. on Syfy.

Picks for B.C. wine lovers BY TIM PAWSEY Here’s a clutch of interesting but not-that-hard-to-find wines that individually and collectively show just how much the bar has been raised in the last few years. These bottles will appeal to anyone who has a passion for the Okanagan (or Similkameen) and are highly affordable for the value and quality they deliver. Prices shown are from the wineries and will vary by store.

STAG’S HOLLOW SYRAH 2011

SPIERHEAD PINOT NOIR 2013 This small east Kelowna producer has truly hit its stride with a focus on small batch wines, all hand harvested. Bright, up-front red berries are followed by a well-balanced, juicy palate with raspberry and cherry notes wrapped in balanced tannins, judicious oak and a lengthy finish. A very stylish and well integrated pinot for the money.

MAVERICK ESTATE RUBICON 2012 This is a relative newcomer to the south Okanagan landscape, but there’s no shortage of expertise and mature plantings behind this family-owned winery that consistently over-delivers in the hands of winemaker-owner Bertus Albertyn. Deep garnet in the glass before a palate of peppery red and black fruit with velvet plushness from Cabernet Franc and structure from Cabernet Sauvignon before a lengthy end. Truly a well-balanced blend that offers great value.

Distinctive, earthy-gamy and blackberry aromas with a soft, elegant entry before a palate of black fruit mingled with some smoky hints and assertive tannins. Hand-picked and co-fermented with eight per cent viognier; aged for 17 months. Inspired by Saint-Joseph but very much Okanagan in style, says winemaker Dwight Sick. Again, superb value (consider a case).

SEVEN STONES ROW 128 MERLOT 2011

Altostratus 2011 sports dark berry notes and spicy hints up front with a very smooth, fruit-forward entry, supple palate of dark cherry and earthy hints, underpinned by firm acidity, with an elegant, lingering close. You can find the wine in private stores around town. And if you really want to spoil that B.C. wine lover sign them up for the Cloudy Day Club, which delivers three times a year. Or buy them a magnum. Call 778-476-1655.

Blink and you might well miss George Hanson’s beautiful winery, just east of Cawston, which has become a Similkameen standard-bearer. If you’re in the area, drop by to be amazed by his newly built cellar. This intense merlot (Hanson dropped 60 per cent of the fruit) sports aromas of black cherry and leather followed by a plush and plummy palate, with mocha hints and that distinctive Similkameen mineral streak before a lengthy, polished finish.

Sneaking in a white, here, just to be polite but this is a distinctive wine as befits the company. Bob and Senka Tennant were part of the team that founded Black Hills, but nowadays they own Terravista Vineyards and make only two wines, using a handful of white varieties. They describe Figaro, a Roussanneviognier-marsanne blend (just released), as their winter white. This, surely, is one of the Okanagan’s most unique, interesting and worthy whites. Aromas of white flower and peach, mouth-filling and generous but not clumsy, it coats the palate with elegant viscosity, showing orchard and stonefruit notes with a gentle nutty hint, before a vibrant, fruity but clean finish. They say try it with Thai-style chowder, roasted ling cod with caper sauce, or seasoned roast chicken, and I couldn’t agree more.

For one night only, the beach will swap its familiar soft resonances for the roar of cheering fans and the strains of “American Kids.” Country music superstar Kenny Chesney is headlining at the Ambleside Live concert series on June 25. The one and only Western Canada performance for Chesney’s “The Big

Revival Tour,” the show is expected to draw crowds from across the Lower Mainland, B.C. and Alberta, according to organizers Graham Lee, president of GSL Holdings, and Dan Fraser, president of Nettwerk Music Group. “We can see where everyone is buying from and we’ve got people coming from all over Western Canada,” says Lee. Ambleside Live’s combination of incredible views and a convenient location has drawn some big names in the six years since its inaugural concert. The likes of Neil Young, Sarah McLachlan, Ed Sheeran and Tegan and Sara have graced the stage. “Everyone from crew members to

artists is stunned by the location,” says Fraser. “There’s nothing that compares to Ambleside – worldwide.” Though the event has boasted some big name performers, Lee and Fraser also aim to showcase up-and-coming acts. They believe fans are attracted by the venue itself as much as the entertainment “We really choose the artist and the tour to match the setting,” says Fraser. “We really want Ambleside to be a place where people can discover music.” “The Big Revival Tour” includes special guests Jake Owen and Chase Rice, both growing stars in their own right. The festival-style event will take place in a cordoned off section of Ambleside Park. Ambleside Live is a licensed event that includes a smorgasbord of local food trucks and vendors. Tickets are $85 for general admission. Premium general admission has already sold out. Showtime is at 6:30 p.m. on June 25. For more information, or to buy tickets, visit www.amblesidelive.com.

‘One hour’s delightful sail from Vancouver’ Bowen Island’s heyday as the must-visit tourist destination BY KENDALL WALTERS

Y

ou see it in the happy faces of the holiday-makers and campers who troop down to greet the daily boat from town. The arrival scene is a blaze of colour and a riot of fun, and you will soon find that you are in a different world from the city. You have escaped the humdrum! Thus began a 1936 brochure advertising Bowen Island as “Vancouver’s Seaside Playground.” Back in those days, the Union Steamship Co. ruled the seas and Bowen Island was the destination on everyone’s mind. Thousands of eager picnickers flocked to the island each weekend to partake of the pristine beauty and plentiful amenities. During its heyday, Bowen boasted five picnic grounds, clay tennis courts and a diving platform. Opportunities for boating, sea bathing, lawn bowling and more drew crowds in record numbers. The Union Steamship Co. shrewdly advertised Bowen as the pinnacle of B.C.’s Gulf Coast Riviera – an untouched paradise that simultaneously offered all the creature comforts. “Nature made Bowen Island one of the loveliest spots on the Pacific Coast, and man, without destroying its natural loveliness, has fitted it out to suit the summer pleasure needs of the people of Vancouver,” read a 1932 brochure. The island’s Dance Pavilion was the province’s largest dance hall, capable

Plan your trip to Bowen Island Nowadays, Bowen Island is a different place, lauded as a quiet retreat and artisan community. If a trip to Bowen is in your summer plans, consider checking out Steamship Days, a three-day festival that pays homage to the Bowen Island of yesteryear with live music, a classic car show and an old boat show. This year’s event, organized by Alan Mills, runs from July 10 to 12. While you’re there, discover the past with Jody Lorenz from Bowen Island Tours. She runs a historical walking tour that gives a glimpse into days gone by on the island. And don’t forget to visit the Bowen Island Museum and Archives, where museum president Rob Forbes and his team will be happy to share quirky tidbits from Bowen’s past. Check bcferries.com for sailings.

of hosting 400 couples on its polished sprung maple floor, all gathered around the central dais where the band struck up a jaunty tune. As night fell, picnic trips gave way to moonlight boat cruises. For only $1 on Wednesdays – or $1.10 on Saturdays – city dwellers could step aboard the glamourous Lady Alexandra and dance the night away, both on the ship and upon arrival on Bowen. Commissioned by Union Steamships from Montrose, Scotland, the Lady Alex was the company’s flagship. When she arrived in 1924, her hull was filled with beautiful white sand the shipbuilders had used as ballast for the long trans-Atlantic voyage. Bowen Island’s Sandy Beach benefited greatly from their choice of stabilizer. Though the island was immensely popular with day-trippers who flocked to it for picnics, it was also a thriving getaway for holiday-makers, offering a hotel, cottages and tenting. The variety of accommodations meant that a vacation on Bowen Island was an affordable endeavour for every pocket. In its heyday, Bowen had over 200 cottages – cosy little bungalows dotted the shore line and nestled amongst the woodland trails. Though Mount Strahan Lodge offered the most amenities, for many families the cottages were the perfect escape. Oftentimes a family would rent

a cottage for several months, the mother and kids would stay on Bowen for the entire summer and the father would join them on the weekends. The Friday evening steamship was known as the “Daddy Boat” and swarms of children would gather on the wharf to meet their fathers upon arrival. From the early 1900s when Captain John Cates first recognized the island’s potential for tourism right through to the 1950s when a booming car culture saw the demise of steamships and the rise of road trips, Bowen Island was the place for Vancouverites to vacation, reaching the height of its popularity in the 1920s and ’30s. Even with all of the novelties and comforts of Bowen Island, Union Steamships went the extra mile to make an impact on visitors. The showmanship that went into this goal was extraordinary, though no single event better encompassed just how far they would go to ensure guests had a good time than Percy Dodson’s daily dive. At the end of each day on Bowen, after the steamship loaded up to take everyone home, Dodson would climb to the highest point of the boat, the band would play “The End of a Perfect Day” and he would jump – an elegant swan dive to serve as the big finish to another perfect day on Bowen Island – the Gulf Coast paradise only “one hour’s delightful sail from Vancouver.”

OF THE NORTH SHORE

Q&A AND PHOTOS BY KENDALL WALTERS

Sadaf Naseri

Dog Owner from the North Shore

Roberta Perrin

What’s your dog’s name and breed? Maya. She is an Australian labradoodle. She’s got the intelligence of a poodle, but she’s a lab at heart!

Owner of Pizazz Gifts What’s your dog’s name and breed? She’s Bailey. Our kids picked the name… and that was the only one they could agree on. She’s a cockapoo. We wanted a dog that didn’t shed and I wanted a dog small enough that I could take to work. Where’s your favourite place to take your dog on the North Shore? Capilano, to the river along the trails there. I like it because I can take her off-leash there and… it’s so beautiful. What’s your dog’s favourite treat? Her favourite treat is probably the milk bones. She loves those.

Where’s your favourite place to take your dog on the North Shore? Lighthouse Park. It’s a great hike. We get to do a hike and she gets to swim in the water.

What makes your dog special? The staff laughs at me because she follows me around. If I walk out the front door of the store, she’ll wait at the door for me!

Be honest – where does your dog sleep at night, their bed or yours? It’s about 50-50. She’s either in her kennel with the door open or at the foot of the bed.

Zubeyda Khan & Seif Mansour Dog Owners from the North Shore

What’s your dog’s name and breed? It’s Ika. It’s a Japanese name for flower. Our son chose it. [She’s a] German Shepherd. We picked a German Shepherd, because I like big dogs, [though] she’s a puppy still. Where’s your favourite place to take your dog on the North Shore? [Ambleside.] It’s off-leash and it’s by the water. What’s your dog’s favourite treat? Rawhide. What makes your dog special? She’s very friendly and smart.

What makes your dog special? She’s kind and nice, gentle with people, kids and dogs. She has a good disposition.

?

Be honest – where does your dog sleep at night, their bed or yours? Under my bed. My bed’s ok too and she’s got her bed next to mine, but normally she’s under mine, so you see a tail or a leg (sticking) out.

What’s your dog’s name and breed? Cleo, because she has a majestic way about her – it’s short for Cleopatra. Even as a pup she sort of had that regal manner. She is part-mastiff, part-lab and we got her as a rescue dog (from Friends of the Animals) on Bowen Island. Where’s your favourite place to take your dog on the North Shore? Our road, because then she meets her other dog friends and we meet neighbours. Everybody loves Cleo and everybody knows Cleo. She’s far better known than I am! What’s your dog’s favourite treat? Peanut butter-flavoured biscuits. What makes your dog special? The way she brings out the love of my kids and my wife and me and friends. She’s an amazing catalyst for affection. Be honest – where does your dog sleep at night, their bed or yours? She’s got her own bed. She likes her bed and she’s a large dog, so it’s lucky for us.

What’s your dog’s name and breed? Our dog’s name is Rufus. My wife likes big dogs and… we were after a Landseer, [which is] a black and white Newfie.

What’s your dog’s name and breed? Our dog’s name is Lyla. She’s Boston terrier – she’s our second Boston terrier. We had our first one for 15 years. We were looking for Hawaiianthemed names [and] our son named her. He’s 10. Where’s your favourite place to take your dog on the North Shore? We do a lot of the walks near the store on the Mackay Creek trails. What’s your dog’s favourite treat? I cut apple for my son and she can hear the knife go through it and the ears go up and she’s right there beside me. She’s pretty foodoriented.

I could also say a walk down Lonsdale, because everybody loves to see him. He’s over 150 pounds! What’s your dog’s favourite treat? Anything from our table. What’s the coolest trick your dog knows? She’s a young’un, we’ve had her for four months… at this point it’s all we can do to get her to sit. She’s an escape artist – out of the house, out of her cage, out of the yard!

What’s the coolest trick your dog knows? He’s not very much of a trick dog. He can get a hunk of drool on the ceiling when he shakes his head, it’s amazing. We always hand guests a paper towel when they come over.

Be honest – where does your dog sleep at night, their bed or yours? She sleeps in her kennel at night. Our last one was in our bed right from when we got her, but this one’s not going to do that. In her kennel, with occasional trips onto the bed.

Be honest – where does your dog sleep at night, their bed or yours? He’s free to come upstairs but he never does, he just lies in his spot in the kitchen. It could be because we’ve got in-floor heating, I’m not sure…

n winter, the Hanes Valley is an unforgiving place, a black and white moonscape where grey boulders poke out from dustings of snow. Icy chutes have been scoured from the nearby ridges by landslides and avalanches. Jeff Yarnold, air operations coordinator for North Shore Rescue, sat in the front of the helicopter next to the pilot, scanning the boulder field. He was looking for tracks in the snow, slide paths and signs of recent avalanches. At this time of year, the valley doesn’t look the way it does in the summer hiking guides. In January, it’s a different country. This is where missing hiker Liang Jin was thought to have headed before he

vanished in January. It’s the same place British tourist Tom Billings disappeared a year earlier. The hunt for Billings was one of the last major searches conducted by Tim Jones, the longtime leader of North Shore Rescue, who died suddenly of a heart attack on Mount Seymour last year. Jones was fierce about the work of North Shore Rescue. “He threw everything he had at it,” said John Blown, another longtime member of the team. “He’d mow down the entire forest to try to find someone.” Not being able to find Billings “drove him crazy,” said his son Curtis Jones, 28,

“The next morning, on Boxing Day, we were up at 6 a.m., and in a helicopter at daylight flying grid patterns on the North Shore with a video tech.”

“It was terrible, terrible conditions ... You were literally swimming in neck-deep snow.” who is also a member of the rescue team. Curtis remembers chatting with his dad about the search on Christmas Day 2013, about needing more leads to push it forward. They kicked about an idea of videotaping the Hanes Valley and “crowdsourcing” the search online. “The next morning, on Boxing Day, we were up at 6 a.m., and in a helicopter at daylight flying grid patterns on the North Shore with a video tech,” said Curtis. So far Billings has not been found. The North Shore mountains seemed to swallow him whole. Jin’s body was found in Hanes Valley in February. Neither were prepared for the conditions they’d encounter. Hanes Valley is among a list of names familiar to searchers: Suicide Gully, Montizambert Creek, Crown Mountain, Tony Baker Gully. Places where a person can get into trouble quickly. It was around the same time of year – a week before Christmas 2012 – and snowing heavily in the North Shore mountains when snowboarder Sebastien Boucher went missing on Cypress. The 33-year-old had last been seen ducking under a boundary rope and heading into rugged terrain west of the ski resort. Members of the rescue team spent two days looking for Boucher without success. There was deep snow and a high risk of avalanche. “It was terrible, terrible conditions,” said Blown. “You were literally swimming in neck-deep snow.” On the third day, there was a brief break in the weather, long enough to send up a helicopter. From the air, they spotted fresh tracks on the side of Black Mountain. At the time, Tim Jones was in a downtown Vancouver hospital with his daughter Taylor. When the pager went off, Jones ran to the nearest police station, commandeered a squad car and asked to be driven to the airport, where the helicopter picked him up. A four-man team including Jones, Mike Danks, Blown, and Yarnold were dropped on the mountain with a sling load of about 500 pounds of gear. But moving it in those conditions was like “pulling a sea anchor,” said Yarnold. “We ended up leaving it there.” They followed the tracks down

38 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

into a gully towards Disbrow Creek. When people are lost in the North Shore mountains, they almost always head down. It’s easier, and they think they’ll reach safety that way, heading toward the city and the ocean. What they find instead are dangerous waterfalls and drop offs that end in icy creeks. Heading down is always a bad idea. As darkness fell and the searchers got closer, they could hear Boucher yelling crazily in the dark at the base of a waterfall. “He was yelling like a madman,” said Yarnold. There was no choice but to follow him down. “When you throw a rope off into the darkness, you hope you can find another rappel station when you get to the end of your rope,” said Blown. Yarnold – the first rescuer in – was shocked when he suddenly found himself face to face with Boucher, who was still upright and walking. “I said, ‘I can’t believe you’re alive,’” said Yarnold. “He said, ‘Me neither.’” High-risk rescues like this are all in a day’s – or most often a night’s – work for members of North Shore Rescue, British Columbia’s busiest and best-known mountain search and rescue team. The North Shore’s combination of mountain backcountry that pushes up close to a big city has been a recipe for many rescues over the five decades the team has been in operation. This year, the team will mark its 50th anniversary. Karl Winter, now 75, is one of three founding members of North Shore Rescue and is still on the active call list, although these days, “I don’t go out and crash

through the bush,” he said. Winter had already taken part in his first mountain rescue as a teenager in the Austrian Alps when he arrived in North Vancouver in 1959. At that time, when authorities needed help in the mountains, they called on Vancouver Mountain Rescue, a loose-knit group of local mountaineers. The team had come into its own after members found the wreckage of a horrific plane crash on the steep slope of Mount Slesse in 1957. In the early days, there wasn’t much formal structure to searches, said Winter. “There were just a bunch of guys who went out searching.” Mostly bushwhacking. “There weren’t a lot of trails on the North Shore mountains in those days.” A few years later, Winter answered an advertisement posted by the civil defence co-ordinator for the North Shore, seeking volunteers. It was the age of the

“You had to be tough and in good shape ... You had a very heavy pack when you were out looking for people.”

“Diefenbunker” and few mountaineers showed up for the first meeting. But the need for wilderness searches quickly became more pressing than protection from nuclear fallout. “That’s how we formed North Shore Rescue,” said Winter. In the early days, search equipment was rudimentary. They didn’t have headlamps and their rain gear was poor. “You just brought a whole bunch of clothes and when you got soaking wet

you would just change if you had to,” he said. They had no radios that worked in the backcountry. Climbing ropes were made of hemp, which were stiff and difficult to handle as soon as they got wet. “You had to be tough and in good shape,” said Winter. “You had a very heavy pack when you were out looking for people.”

WITH MY

Today, there are about 40 volunteer members of North Shore Rescue, who get called out to about 100 rescues a year. Members of the team are trained in first aid to international trauma life support level, a higher standard than any other team in the province. Heading into a rescue, they are always well-prepared with pre-packaged “go packs” of supplies ready to toss into the helicopter at a moment’s notice. “That was my dad’s modus operandi,” said Curtis. “When they jumped out of that helicopter, they brought the kitchen sink with them – hypothermia kits, tents, stoves – the whole nine yards.”

CONSTITUENTS

What if you lived in a community where the elected officials really listened and acted, and the people took the initiative to voice their concerns, both truly believing that they could make Canada a better place? That’s what has happened time and again in our riding, on matters such as: • Seniors’ Matters - improving our RRSP/RRIF program, and getting our provisions in Budget 2015, with the help of the grassroots, West Vancouver-based Westcoast RRIF Focus Group; • Fisheries and the Environment - making progress on an International Centre of Excellence, and getting our provisions in Budget 2015, thanks to great work alongside organizations such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation and West Vancouver Streamkeepers; • Tourism - advancing our tourism industry, and again getting provisions in Budget 2015, working with leaders such as the heads of Tourism Whistler and Grouse Mountain Resorts Ltd. through the Round Table I created; • Promoting National Health and Fitness - working with Nancy Greene Raine and the best advocates in the country to promote physical exercise and lower levels of cardiovascular disease; • And work in many more relevant areas! These are some of the initiatives that bring government and people together; I invite you to follow the leadership of groups like those above - come speak to me so I can learn more about your initiatives.

Q:

My parents are really struggling to live alone and I feel they would benefit from help in the home, such as meal preparation, assistance with bathing, and so on. The challenge is that they refuse to allow anyone into their home to assist them!

I can understand how worried you must be. The initial reaction of many seniors faced with declining vitality is a downright rejection of the notion that assistance is needed. The key here is to be patient, remain positive and introduce the idea slowly. By introducing help slowly, you give your parents time to accept the idea. For example, you could reassure your parents by suggesting a trial period, after which the service can be cancelled at any time. It’s also important you present the support as being for YOUR own peace of mind. Make certain the support worker starts with household chores, NOT

“hands on” care. The more personal, “hands on” tasks can be introduced as familiarity grows. Encourage family and friends and, especially, the family doctor to let them know that they think a support worker is a great idea. Often seniors are concerned about the cost of services. Keep in mind many of today’s seniors experienced the Great Depression and World War years, so every dollar is valuable! If they visit some nursing homes they can consider their options, check the costs, and perhaps realise that they would prefer to accept help in order to remain in their home. TM

The New Coal Harbour River Green Community Coal Harbour Lifestyle Arrives in Richmond It’s been a love affair spanning 23 years: the dynamic relationship between Aspac Developments Ltd., a developer known for their exclusive, luxurious residences and Vancouver, a city respected worldwide for its active lifestyle and natural setting. During the last quarter of the century, Aspac Developments’ reputation for creating elegant, trendsetting neighbourhoods has grown stronger every year — prestigious neighbourhoods that not only stand the test of time but transform, inspire, and delight. And it all began in Coal Harbour.

Redefining Luxurious Living Today, most people strolling along the Coal Harbour Seawall would find it impossible to imagine that this vibrant neighbourhood was once a bleak, dusty tract of industrial land. The transformation began in 1993 and over the next two decades, Aspac’s vision of a master planned community offering a level of luxury and cosmopolitan style was complete. Now, this downtown neighbourhood is known

Coal Harbour – Vancouver

worldwide for its award-winning architecture, extensive displays of public art, and lively, cultural ambiance — a residential gem within the diverse fabric of the downtown Vancouver landscape. As Aspac’s portfolio of accolades grew, the company turned its attention to another of Vancouver’s much-loved neighbourhoods — UBC. The first high-rise at Wesbrook Place, UBC’s newest neighbourhood, The Wesbrook soon set a new standard of excellence that continues to attract attention from an evermore sophisticated global market.

The New Coal Harbour In 2007, Aspac embarked on yet another new challenge: creating an iconic, waterfront community that would bring their outstanding level of residential expertise to Richmond. And thus, the River Green Community was born — a new interpretation of the charm, sophistication, and innovation that was pioneered in Coal Harbour.

The location is, in a word, breathtaking — 27 acres adjacent to the mighty Fraser River and next door to Richmond’s Olympic Oval. The River Green Community boasts 1.1 kilometres of waterfront plus direct access to the City of Richmond’s recently improved riverside trails, a soon to be built pier with floating dock, as well as unobstructed views of the North Shore Mountains, Vancouver skyline, and west toward the gulf islands. This is a neighbourhood that offers some of the most dramatic sunsets to be found in Metro Vancouver and connects people with life. Now complete, the community’s initial phase, 1 River Green, also incorporates terraced water gardens with waterfalls, intertwining pathways, and gazebo-style pavilions that appear to float on the ponds within the landscape. Plantings are predominantly indigenous species to seamlessly enhance the outdoor environment. The resulting oasis is filled with a magical sense of tranquility where nature and man-made beauty come together.

1 River Green - First Release

2 River Green – First Release Coming Soon

Five-Star by Design Like their predecessors, all River Green homes focus on not only meeting but exceeding the expectations of the most discerning buyer. Every detail, every finishing is meticulously planned to maximize space and the experience of sophisticated luxury. Top of the line appliances, fully integrated refrigerators, plus custom made Italian cabinetry and Italian fixtures are just some of the cutting edge standards that define this iconic community. Then there’s the River Green lifestyle — a way of living based on the world’s finest fivestar resorts: 24 hour concierge services, soaring lobbies in marble and natural wood columns, and onsite property managers to ensure immediate attention to the smallest detail or request. Setting a first for convenience in Richmond is River Green’s private, resident’s only shuttle service that provides transportation to the nearby Canada Line stations. Owners will also have access to a diverse array of five-star amenities such as a music room with piano, state-of-the-art fitness centre, multi-media theatre, games room, and as well as an infinity pool with adjacent whirlpool, sauna, and steam room.

It is no wonder why River Green was awarded the 2014 Urban Development Institute Award of Excellence for Best Master Planned Community in British Columbia.

Art in the Community Like every Aspac Developments community, public art is an integral part at River Green — a way to honour the heritage and culture of the surrounding community. Metal sculptures and stone carvings inspired by First Nations’ stories are scattered throughout the landscape. Numerous original artwork grace the interior walls of each building. Even the functional necessity of a sky bridge between the first two towers became a masterpiece, Aspac commissioned two local artists to create walls of stained glass depicting a heron in flight. Taking sustainability to a new level, River Green has even found an innovative way to recycle materials from the site itself. North Vancouver artist Brent Comber carefully sorted through wood reclaimed from the majestic white oak tree that originally grew on the property, then gave it renewed life as sculptures and art furniture.

Experience Richmond’s New Coal Harbour The River Green Community’s newly renovated, four-level presentation centre is located at 5111 Hollybridge Way in Richmond — 24,000 square feet showcasing the sheer scale and vision behind this iconic master planned community. Be sure to book an appointment for your private tour and priority registration at rivergreen.com.

Spring is a time for cleaning, renovating and improving our homes – both inside and out. Keeping up with seasonal maintenance will not only lower potential repair costs but may also help increase the value of your home.

M

y neighbours are readying their gardens for spring. There’s mowing and hedge-trimming going on, and I’m positive there’ll be flowers in pots before long. There’s plenty of work underway at my house, too. But while everyone else is landscaping their yards, we’re in the midst of digging ours up. Again. At 73 years old and counting, our house has a few, shall we say, challenges. The current one involves original clay pipe drainage, a particularly rainy winter and some pinhole leaks in the underground foundation. Pinhole is apparently ancient Latin for “big enough to allow a flood of Noahlike proportions” and maybe sanskrit for “this will cost a lot of money.”

Old homes provide chaos - and comfort

PHOTO THINKSTOCK

ShomePdesign AC E + style

As much as my husband enjoyed the rare pleasure of renting a backhoe, and my kids loved the piles of relocated dirt and rocks, I’ve had my fill of muddy trenches and sifting through sodden boxes in the basement.

At 73 years old and counting, our house has a few, shall we say, challenges. Truth be told, I’ve threatened a time or two (usually while ankle deep in water) to cut and run. “Let’s sell it,” I’ll say to my husband, “and buy a townhouse. Imagine it: new

electrical and matching light switches as far as the eye can see. A yard that can be mowed in less than two hours. Wood floors with nary a splinter or scuff in sight.” He rolls his eyes and keeps working. He knows I love this house as much as he does. Selling is not an option. We bought it six years ago this spring, swept away by the claw foot tub, the mismatched glass door knobs, the farmhouse sink, and the huge yard (tree fort included, of course). It was quirky, full of character, cosy (yes, that’s a nice way to say very small) and the fact that our antique typewriters and vintage radios fit right in was just icing on the cake. In some neighbourhoods in the Vancouver region, a house like this might be worth millions but our less-thandesirable postal code put this property in that magical fairyland known as “budget friendly,” even for us latecomers to the property game. It was our first house, and we adored everything about it. Except the doors that don’t close properly, and the random cracks that appear from time to time in the lathand-plaster walls. And we’re never sure what kind of insulation we’ll find behind a wall. The options so far have included no insulation at all, shredded newsprint, wadded up strips of an old silk dress (that’s just a guess, could be an old silk circus tent for all I know), and sometimes, actual honest-to-goodness pink fibreglass. There’s also single-pane windows that leave us chilly in the winter, and the improperly ventilated attic that turns the second floor into the Gobi desert in the middle of summer. But I still smile every time I pull into the driveway, still make optimistic renovation to-do lists that never happen on schedule, still proudly tell new neighbours that we’re the “little yellow house with the white picket fence on the corner.” And I’ve discovered something over the last few years: our guests never notice the cracks in the wall, or the door frames that are missing doors, or even the trenches in the yard. Instead, we hear how welcoming it is here, how comfortable, how much it reminds them of a favourite grandmother’s house, or somewhere they lived as a child. People always tell us they feel right at home. Right at home. Doesn’t get much better than that. Somehow, that makes it all worthwhile – even, it seems, the leaky basement.

Container Gardening Container planting is not just for gardeners living in small spaces. In fact, larger areas are also ideal for planting in containers because of their versatility. They also, according to garden columnist Anne Morrison, can act as maximum security jails for beautiful, but invasive plants. Best of all, by using containers gardeners maintain complete control of the soil mix, sun and shade and pest control. And while there are dozens of garden variety containers available to purchase, with a little imagination, the possibilities are

literally endless. Look around your home for items that can be recycled. Think old toys, kid’s furniture, tricycles, bikes, kitchen bowls or buckets. The social media platform Pinterest is also a great site to check out for inspiration. Just don’t forget every container needs a way to drain water so if it doesn’t already have holes, prepare to get handy. And don’t forget, when it comes to container planting, size absolutely matters.

1

The following are five easy DIY containers: PLASTIC REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS

2

That Whole Foods bag isn’t just for buying organic produce; with a little potting soil, it becomes the ideal vessel for growing it. These bags work great for lettuce.

VINTAGE OR QUIRKY TEAPOTS Vintage or quirky teapots: Teapots come in all shapes and sizes so don’t be afraid to combine several for an interesting grouping.

3 4

RETIRED PURSES

5

Combine your love of gardening with your flair for fashion. Line an old purse, or purses, with plastic and hang from your balcony, fence or bathroom hook.

DOLLAR STORE DECORATIVE TINS Splurge and buy two – or ten. Line with plastic to avoid rust and let your imagination do the rest. Don’t forget to punch some holes in the bottom.

CHILDREN’S TOYS OR FURNITURE Children’s toys or furniture: Give that broken dump truck or tiny Adirondack chair new life by transforming it into a container to grow flowers or vegetables. In the case of a broken truck, you can plant directly into the box. As for a small wooden chair, simply remove a slat from the seat and place a potted plant in the space.

Furthermore, by project’s end, a relationship between contractor and client is built, so much so, that we are confident that we will collaborate again in the future.” In-house, RenovateMe!, offers design, planning and obtaining permits, construction, coordination and management of sub-trades, timelines and budgets, as well as interior styling and decorating – in a nutshell, the company can provide you with a fully-integrated service from concept to completion. ...an experienced company where style and practicality meets courteous, knowledgeable and quality service... numerous separate showrooms in order to find just the right pieces for their project, while taking advantage of years of experience and accumulated know-how,” the team continues. “That makes the process much less overwhelming.” As one happy West Vancouver client said, “Over the past few years, the RenovateMe! team has done numerous residential and commercial projects for me. The work has included leasehold improvements, plumbing, electrical, flooring and interior design. The jobs were always completed on budget and to the highest standards. I can highly recommend this company.” Another remarks, “We found the team to be personal, approachable and remarkably accommodating to our requests, always ensuring that we would be satisfied with the final product. We were really amazed at how versatile they were. They smoothly transitioned from sourcing materials, to making spectacular design choices, to performing precise construction work; each in a professional manner. They were also respectful of our living area, consistently keeping a clean construction site. In addition, they were always very mindful of keeping within the budget and the timeframe, and their ability to do so was greatly appreciated.”

Flooring options for every room in your home

F

looring is a fact of life. And whether you prefer the tickle of a fuzzy carpet beneath your feet or the smooth surface of hardwood, flooring can add warmth and style to any room. Nick Negahban, owner of Edgemont Floors in North Vancouver, says flooring is often the last step of a renovation, and it is often the last item to be picked. But it’s important to remember that flooring is the first thing people see when they walk into your house. “Don’t leave it to the last step to pick the right floor. When people rush into it they sometimes make the wrong decision because of the urgency of getting the floors in, and it may be a costly one down the road,” says Negahban. The list of flooring types is long and includes tile, carpet, laminate, hardwood, engineered hardwood, and vinyl. Vinyl and ceramic are common in bathrooms because they can handle the humidity, and Negahban says hardwood is generally a no-no in that area. “Some types of flooring are better suited for certain types of rooms. For example, you would not put hardwood in the bathroom where there is a lot of moisture. You also shouldn’t put carpet in areas such as kitchens because it will get dirty fast, stain like crazy and it wouldn’t be sanitary,” he says. Kitchens generally call for something that can handle high traffic, such as tile, vinyl, or laminate. Negahban says figuring out which flooring best suits a room depends on how the room is used

58 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

and what the purpose of the new floor is: comfort, style, ease of cleanliness, and/or durability. “The most popular floor nowadays would have to be hardwood, LVP (luxury vinyl plank) and LVT (luxury vinyl tile),” says Negahban. “The beauty about LVP and LVT is that they are very versatile, they are completely waterproof and are very resilient. Hardwood floors are very elegant, and have a natural beauty but are not as durable as LVP and LVT. Hardwood floors are more expensive, and if you do require a repair board, replacement on LVP and LVT are much easier and cheaper to do.” Hardwood works well in many areas, including offices and living rooms, but consider adding area rugs for high-traffic zones. Home Depot notes on its website that hardwood flooring can last up to 25 years if properly taken care of, and engineered hardwood is another option. Engineered hardwood is a combination of a real hardwood surface with layers of plywood or fireboard underneath. It can be used in more locations than solid hardwood because it can better handle moisture. Consider easy-to-clean or stain-resistant floor options for areas such as the kitchen and dining room. Despite the food-spill potential, however, carpet can work in a dining room, but be careful to choose a darker colour. Negahban says carpet is still a popular flooring choice and will always be for certain rooms, especially

PHOTOS CANSTOCK

bedrooms, family rooms and living rooms. He says a common mistake homeowners owners make is choosing a flooring type based on style and not on the use and versatility of the product. When asked if there are any common misconceptions about flooring, Negahban explains there is always some new information that may or may not be accurate. A couple of years ago, studies suggested hard surfaces like hardwood, LVP, LVT, and laminate were better for people with respiratory problems because carpets tended to catch dust. Then it was suggested that carpets trap the dust in and vacuuming on a weekly basis can help reduce allergy issues, while hard surfaces don’t trap in the dust so it gets airborne. In general, it’s best to talk to a professional about flooring options, and Negahban says while some flooring can be done as a DIY project, it’s also usually a good idea to let the pros handle installation. “When it comes to hardwood and carpet it’s better to let a professional do it. One of the most important parts of a hardwood installation is the sub-floor preparation. You have to meet certain standards prior to installing your new hardwood floors, which a lot of people are not aware of. As for carpet, it’s one of the trickiest products to install. You need the proper tools, first of all, and they are not your standard tools sitting in your tool box,” explains Negahban.

DIY A

dding a geranium to your rumpus room may not be much of a challenge, but some decorating projects are. When it comes to remodelling, refreshing or renovating bathrooms and kitchens, it’s wise to be reasonable about what is DIY and what should be left to the pros. Interior designer Janice Beaudoin, of Janice Beaudoin Design in North Vancouver, says some homeowners can pull up old floors to save money, but hiring an installer is recommended for best results when laying a new floor. Carpet and hardwood flooring in living rooms should also be installed by professionals, says Beaudoin. Same goes for lighting. Beaudoin says most people like recessed lighting, especially in their kitchen, which is something that should be installed by a certified electrician. “If you are a DIY-er, hanging pendant lights over an island might be a project you want to take on,” she notes. In bathrooms, a simple vanity fixture replacement can be something a homeowner might attempt, but if you are installing a fixture in a new location or any recessed lighting, hire an electrician, says Beaudoin. When asked if kitchen countertops

62 NORTH SHORE LIVING / SPRING 2015

can be done as a DIY project, she answers simply, “Nope.” Installing countertops is definitely a project best left for pros, she says. “Most new kitchens are engineered quartz or stone countertops. They need to be professionally fabricated for sink and faucet openings. Besides, they’re really heavy. Countertops are large pieces of solid rock,” she explains. Cabinets are also not a project for weekend DIY warriors. “Not unless you happen to be a skilled finishing carpenter,” says Beaudoin. She notes that there are kitchen cabinets in a wide range of materials and methods of assembly for almost any renovation budget. “Shop around and base your decision on the best value for your budget. Ask how basic components like the cabinet box, drawers and shelves are assembled, and in particular look at the hardware. Also pay attention to the finish, how it’s applied and the coatings that are used,” she recommends. Updating windows can make an incredible difference to a home both inside and out, says Beaudoin. “Trimming the window is like putting a frame around the view, and draperies are often the finishing touch. Even if you don’t have them in the rest of your home, drapes add colour, warmth and drama to a living room,

PHOTO CANSTOCK

or hire a professional? which is usually the most ‘formal’ room of the house.” And while tweaking decor can be a fun DIY project, it may not be as easy as it looks. “I can’t tell you how many people choose a paint colour because they like it in someone else’s house and are sadly disappointed when it looks completely different in their home,” says Beaudoin. “Everyone’s lighting is different and a colour will never look the same in two homes without identical lighting conditions. Even if you don’t work with a designer for your base materials or furnishings, consider a paint colour consultation with a designer or decorator. Many offer a one- to two-hour consultation to specify the right colours for your walls based on natural and artificial light and your finishes.” Even if you want to finish the decor on your own, Beaudoin suggests at least starting with a professional. “It’s so worthwhile to get an interior designer to help you with choosing your base materials: floors, cabinets, countertops, backsplash tile and wall paint. Your kitchen is a big investment and working with a designer will help you find the right materials for your home and lifestyle and help you avoid making expensive mistakes,” she says.

Northshore Windows – Pride in craftsmanship and service

T

he purchase and installation of new windows and doors is not something you do every day. So if you’re wondering where to begin, Darrell Akune and Jon Haagensen of Northshore Windows are ready to answer your questions.

“I enjoy interacting with homeowners and one of the comments we often hear is, ‘I had no idea there was so much to think about in replacing windows’ – people are grateful when we help them through a process that is often underestimated,” said Darrell. With three decades of experience, Darrell and Jon say they’ve seen “pretty much everything”, so there’s no-one better to assess the scope of a project or to describe what a homeowner should expect.

Milgard windows for beauty, durability and weather resistance.

“We explain how it all happens,” they said. The process usually begins with an in-home consultation, during which the Northshore Windows team will discuss the project and take measurements for a price quote. Once the team has a clear idea of the homeowner’s objectives, they can recommend the most appropriate products and outline the costs involved. Focusing on some exciting innovations in the window and door industries, Darrell says the “Essence” line is a Milgard branded window with solid wood on the interior for its aesthetic beauty and fibreglass on the exterior to provide durability and weather resistance. “Bi-fold and multi-slide doors can open up an entire wall to the outdoors – great for summer entertaining,” said Darrell. The company has found that most clients with old wood windows want to replace them with the wood/fibreglass hybrid windows in order to eliminate future issues with rot.

Doors are supplied for front entrances, patios, and full wall applications in the case of bi-fold or multi-slide doors and can also be custom-made for non-standard sizes. As a small, owner-operated company, Northshore Windows has realized that employing their own installers is the best way to control the quality of their work. “Referrals are the foundation of our business, so our goal is to make sure our clients are happy, and telling their friends about our great service,” Darrell said. So whether you’d like a small upgrade or want to replace all windows and doors to complete your renovation, the experience and quality of service offered by Northshore Windows are topnotch. For more information about the products and styles available, or to make an appointment to see product samples at the Northshore Windows showroom at 1851 Welch Street in North Vancouver, please visit www.northshorewindows.com or call (604) 604 210-0020.
