Renee Henare– Northland Rescue Chopper saved my baby’s life Renee Henare knows how crucial yet slow every minute can be while you sit with a sick newborn in your arms and awaiting help.

On arrival, she said the paramedics instantly put her mind at ease even though she knew her daughter was severely ill.

The Northland mum of seven feels forever grateful to the Northland Rescue Helicopter who she says played an important part in recently saving the life of her youngest child, seven week old Dorothy.

“While no one knew what was wrong, they just got in there and started to help. It was amazing – and they kept me calm as we took off,” Renee says of the ordeal.

Just two weeks old at the time, Dorothy, affectionately known as Dottie, suddenly was feeling unwell and was sleeping a lot.

Dottie had a sore tummy and it had finally settled so mum Renee thought she was just sleeping off a day of discontentment.

Before long, she was soft and floppy and not wanting to feed and only wanting to sleep.

But when Dottie kept sleeping and was hard to wake, she knew something was wrong and didn’t waste any time in calling for help.

Tiny Dottie had been moving her arms and legs around in her sleep, a lot more than usual and it was concerning. Renee later learnt that these were seizures.

“The flight felt like it went really fast. From Taipa to Whangarei it was 40 minutes – the fact that the helicopter was so much faster than if we had driven anywhere, it made such a difference to her life.”

On arrival at Whangarei Hospital, Dottie crashed and had to be resuscitated. Once stable, she underwent a range of tests and was diagnosed with meningitis.

Within hours, she was flown by another rescue chopper from Whangarei to Starship Hospital in Auckland where she stayed for a further five weeks, only returning home two weeks ago.

“In all honesty, if it wasn’t for the Northland Rescue Helicopter that day and getting us to Whangarei so quickly, I think my baby would not have made it.

From Monday, December 8 until Monday, March 8, Northland Regional Council staff will take hundreds of samples from 43 popular coastal sites and 17 freshwater locations across the region.

Chair of the NRC Water and Land Working Party, Justin Blaikie, says weekly results will be forwarded to the Whangarei, Far North and Kaipara District Councils, the Northland District Health Board (NDHB) and other interested parties.

“We let the health board and relevant district council know of any results showing elevated bacterial levels, typically within 48 hours, and it’s their responsibility to take any further action needed,” he said.

“This can include further site investigations to establish the source of any contamination, issuing public warnings not to swim or gather shellfish and putting up permanent warning signs at the worst sites.”

The council’s Coastal and Water Quality manager, Ricky Eyre, says last summer 98% (622 out of 635) samples at coastal sites and 77% (151 out of 196) samples at freshwater sites met national ‘guideline values’, meaning they were considered suitable for swimming.

“

“Results can vary quite substantially following rain, which can carry run-off from land, although obviously, that was less of an issue during last summer’s very dry conditions.”

Mr Eyre says the council advises people not to swim for two or three days after heavy rain, or if there are warning signs indicating unsafe water.

“As a rule of thumb, don’t swim if the water looks dirty or murky, smells or has scum on its surface. Look for or consider any potential sources of contamination, both n e a r by and upstream.

“Over summer natural events like large seaweed blooms at beaches or cyanobacteria blooms in rivers and lakes can also impact on swimming locations.”

He says while large amounts of seaweed can smell unpleasant as they rot on beaches, they’re generally harmless. In contrast, cyanobacteria blooms can pose a health risk, and swimming in affected areas should be avoided.

Test results will be posted on the Can I Swim Here? section at lawa.org. nz. Any water-quality concerns can be reported to the council’s freephone 24/7 Environmental Hotline on 0800 504 639. ¢

Hearing commissioners are now sitting to consider public submissions on the proposed mega landfill in the Dome Valley to take Auckland’s rubbish — estimated at 180,000 tonnes annually.

The tip is planned by private Chineseowned company, Waste Management Ltd, which wants to begin construction on the landfill in 2022 with a proposed opening in 2028. The landfill would run 24/7 and involve an estimated 300 truck movements each day through an already congested State Highway 1.

The hearings began on Monday, November 9 in Warkworth. It will run for five weeks, with more than 1,000 submitters coming from the Fight the Tip movement as well as iwi representatives from across Northland. Kaipara District Council, the Department of Conservation and even Auckland Council, which have opposed the plan.

While the hearings are underway, the issue has been highlighted with the release of a video produced by Maori film-maker Fred Renata, featuring stages of the protest during the past few years, including a rahui over the planned dump site and a protest hikoi to Auckland Council.

Titled, Stand and Deliver, the video has been enthusiastically supported by the protest originating the Fight the Tip movement.

It prompted the Waste Management search for the new site on 1,000 hectares in the Dome Valley, which FTT and Ngati Whatua and supporting iwi say is in a catchment for the Hoteo River, threatening the Kaipara Harbour in the event of a tip breach, or flood.

They argue that the harbour could be poisoned with disastrous long-

term damage to marine life and the wider environment.

The submissions are being heard by commissioners, Chair Sheena Tepania, and Alan Watson, David Mead, Dr Wayne Donovan and Michael Parsonson.

Two genetically-distinct species of bat exist in New Zealand as a whole; the lesser short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata) and the long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus). Both species are critically endangered and vulnerable to introduced animals.

The lesser short-tailed bat is the most numerous of the two bat species in Northland. Although vulnerable, and little data is available on population numbers; these tiny mammals still survive.

These minute nocturnal bats spend a great deal of time foraging on the forest floor for small insects and carrion. They also feed on pollen,

flowers, fruit and nectar and will catch flying insects while in flight using echolocation.

Small in size, the short-tailed bat is only six to seven centimetres long and weighs 10–22 grams. Colonies of bats can be found roosting inside hollow trees, emerging at dusk to feed during the night. Mating takes place between February and May. If you sight a colony of bats in forest remnants, contact your nearest Department of Conversation and advise them of the location. Step 6. Consider insurance options.

Questions to ask include what could go wrong with my business or at work?

Have I got it covered? Is business interruption insurance, which covers against losses after an emergency, a good option?

Step 7. Identify who can run the business in your absence. If something takes you or another important team member away from the business, who can take over important tasks?

Step 8. Keep contact details handy.

Do you have emergency contact details handy? This list may include staff, emergency services, clients and suppliers. You may also include your insurance details, security company and neighbouring businesses.

When were contact details last updated — is it time to check for any changes?

Step 9. Back up important data.

What data — customer details, emails, files and spreadsheets — are critical to your business? What sensitive data — personnel files, bank details, tax documents — do you need to keep safe? Do you regularly back up data on a hard drive, server or in the cloud? It’s time to start if you don’t do this already.

Dignitaries and veterans, family members and friends gathered in Dargaville on a rainy Wednesday morning to commemorate those who have served our country in the armed forces. Though internationally significant, Armistice Day is usually eclipsed locally by Anzac Day services.

This year proved the exception, as those who had been unable to pay their respects at Anzac Day dawn parades gathered to honour the sacrifice of our military during the decades.

Covid lockdown put an end to Anzac ceremonies nationwide. A second wave of the virus put a stop to commemorations of the end of the second world war, 75 years ago, as well as memorial gatherings for the anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the Vietnam War. Armistice Day, called Remembrance Day or Veterans Day in many of our Allied nations, is observed at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, the exact time and date that the first world war came to an end.

The time was chosen to be easy to communicate and memorise across many battlefields, from the Middle East to Russia, France to the Italian Alps, for soldiers speaking many

different languages. Dargaville’s RSA marked the occasion for 2020 with a wreath-laying before their wall of remembrance, near the mobile artillery gun, which stands as a permanent guard in front of their clubrooms.

Representatives from the RSA, civic clubs and groups, and Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith were there to express their respects, while citizens across the country observed a minute’s silence if they were unable to attend similar events.

Dargaville’s RSA president spoke eloquently of the sacrifice made by the 16,000 young men who never returned from the first world war, before noting and honouring the sacrifice both mentally and physically made by all our veterans and service people.

As is traditional, the flag was lowered to half-mast, and the Last Post played. Wreaths were placed by the memorial wall to honour

Good collection methodology and effective sorting is a major point of difference between recyclers – Kaipara Refuse is amongst the small group that achieve a high standard. Recycling is all about supplying clean sorted materials to be remanufactured. While prices for recycled materials have been low of late – good quality materials will always be preferred. The paper collected is able to be used in Auckland to be made into egg cartons and apple trays – much of the paper collected in other areas of NZ is unable to be used in NZ and in many cases unable to be sold due to contamination.

It goes without saying that the other materials collected are also sought after – glass is colour separated and sent to Visy Glass in Auckland to be made back into bottles and jars. 100% of collections are recovered unlike some collections using wheelie bins that loose much of the glass due to excessive breakage and contamination. Milk bottles (natural and white) are also used in Auckland as well as the clear No1 PET (soft drink) bottles which are sent to Wellington for reprocessing.

All in all there is some really good recycling going on in the Kaipara, well done Kaipara Refuse and keep up the good work.

With the end of year festive season fast-approaching, the thought of new potatoes coming out of the garden is on many minds.

Potatoes, however, aren’t all the same. The experts in the field of potato growing recommend choosing your potatoes for an enduse rather than choosing by varieties alone. Potatoes come under three categories. Smooth on the inside, for boiling, salads and casseroles.

Between smooth and fluffy for most cooking methods. Fluffy on the inside for chips, baking, mashing and wedges.

Planting season for potatoes in Kaipara is from May to November and then again during February and March. Buy your seed potatoes a month before planting to give them time to sprout. Remove from the bag, place in trays in a warm, dry, well-aerated spot until the sprouts are 20–40mm long.

When buying seed potatoes, always ensure that they are a certified virus-free cultivar rather than something you’ve picked up from a bargain bin. That way, you’re assured of a healthy, diseasefree crop of potatoes without the disappointment of losing the entirety to an unwanted virus.

The next step before planting your potatoes is to prepare the soil. Add in plenty of compost, well-rotted manure and a good dose of blood and bone. If you have drainage issues, as many of Kaipara’s clay

soils do, create a raised bed first and then add in your compost and other organic materials.

To avoid any diseases, never plant your potatoes in the same place.

Always choose a different location to locate your next crop. Potatoes are also an excellent option for helping to condition difficult clay soil before planting other vegetables or flowers in the space left vacant after harvesting.

Make long furrows in the soil approximately 300mm apart for smaller varieties and 400mm apart for main crop and larger varieties.

Plant the potatoes 250mm in the furrows and cover up with 50mm of soil. Mound up your potatoes as the shoots emerge until they are 300mm tall. Mounding protects your tubers from frost, wind and prevents greening. Ensure the mounds are kept weed-free.

Feed your plants every four weeks with manure and a suitable fertiliser until they are ready for harvest.

Ensure the mounds are kept weedfree. Harvest when the foliage has died off by carefully using a garden fork to loosen the soil and then lift out.

Cultivars to look for are Agria, Cabaret Draga, Frisia, Laura and Rua. These varieties can be found at your local nursery or online.

Jeannie and Richard Walker’s 10-acre block in Mangawhai is home to 1,000 Brown Shaver chickens, which free-range around the property thanks to their portable homes.

“We moved here a year ago to follow our dream of having a lifestyle block with chickens. Richard is a builder, and we are big animal lovers. We spent a year researching what we needed for a sustainable hen farm,” says Jeannie.

“We have now got a licence to sell our eggs roadside around Mangawhai.

People can go onto our Happy Chicks Facebook Page to find out where we will be and when. We also do free local delivery. We go to the Takapuna Markets as well, and we find city customers really appreciate free-range.

“Free-range means the chickens have access to the outdoors. We wanted to create the ultimate environment on the rolling hills so our girls can be outside playing all day having a happy life.

“Our first flock arrived a few months ago and the second flock has arrived in time to provide beautiful eggs for Christmas.

“The laws are changing for egg production in New Zealand, and there will be a lot more demand for freerange eggs, which is a good thing.

There is strict animal welfare, MPI and risk management programmes we adhere to.”

The Walkers purchased the hens through Maketu Poultry Farms and the chickens arrive at 16 weeks old and ready to lay.

“They live in the lush green pasture in transportable chicken caravans that Richard built on trailers with purposebuilt nesting boxes. We move them often and give them fresh rainwater from our tanks as water is a big component of the free-range life. Due to the lack of rain, we purchase more from Mangawhai Water Boy if we run low, so they drink what we drink.

“The hens live on grass, bugs and worms. We supplement their feed to

maintain their health and also supply oyster shell grit. This helps with the shell quality to protect the egg on the inside, and they have beautiful golden yolks.

In the last few months, we will start rehoming them to other people who love hens so they can retire. They will

ways. With the help of our daughter Alina and her son Mayze, every egg we collect is cleaned, weighed and graded. We also candle them to see any defects to the shell to keep the eggs fresh for health and safety regulations. Some come down in the mornings to breakfast and immediately lay their eggs. Others lay after lunch, so we collect the eggs twice a day.

“We have strict quality control and know exactly which day our eggs were laid. When you have fresh eggs, store them away from direct sunlight at room temp like your pantry, not the fridge. If they are stored in the fridge, they sweat when they come out. They can last 35 days if stored correctly.

“Cleanliness is very important. We have penthouse nest boxes that they climb up to and lay. The eggs roll out the back end and remain clean for collection. After cleaning, sorting and

packing, they are kept at around 15 degrees. The houses have a mesh floor, and when they are perched the manure goes underneath the caravan, so they are not living on it. Then we harrow the paddocks to mix the manure into the soil, and the grass regrows.

“Chickens are a flock animal and love people and company. They love being talked to and interacting. They are underrated for their intelligence.

They need care seven days a week just like we and our children do. Back yard hens can have fruit and vegetable scraps, but these need to be fresh, not mouldy bread.

“We wanted to create the ultimate environment on the rolling hills for our girls to be happy chicks outside playing all day.

“You need to be accountable and have a good animal welfare reputation.

We wanted to have everything for them

to have a happy life, and we have accomplished that. We have also been doing promotions on Facebook. We did a nominate a happy chick competition, and people nominated someone they felt deserved a gift. It got people connecting and acknowledging community members who had done something for them, and it was a nice way to see to them thanked.

“We have lots of photos and information on the Facebook page, and our website tells you how to get to our farm on Devich Road. Our farm shop is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The people who buy our eggs often share our passion for good animal welfare and quality products.

They make the effort to drive to our farm and their feedback is amazing.

We love the business and the people we are meeting. We are excited to see how it expands in the future.” ¢

BEACH AND BOATING WISE Checklist for plain sailing You might be a seasoned mariner with salt in his veins or a first-time captain with a brand new boat fresh off the trailer. Either way, here’s the top 10 list compiled from the experts and authorities to make sure 2020’s summer on the water is all smooth sailing.

• Emergency communications. A waterproof cellphone (plastic bag your regular phone if necessary) to call *500 in an emergency is a must. If you have a VHF radio, remember that the new channel for the Kaipara Harbour is channel seven to hail the coast guard.

Old-fashioned flares (not the pants) or an electronic beacon are also recommended.

• Motor perishables. Get a professional to check on impellers for cooling, fuel lines, spark plugs and coils, and those oils to fuel mixing systems for two-stroke outboards. Make sure it will fire up when you need it most.

• Batteries. Vital for everything from lights to ignition to communications and radio forecasts, they’re easy to check and hard to replace out at sea.

• Lifejackets. The old-style ‘pillow’ jackets are right out, and less obtrusive, safer, more effective self-inflating life-preserving units are in. Swap them out and enjoy the difference in ease of movement.

• First aid kit. That seems a no brainer, but between fish hooks, sharp spikes and teeth on that big catch and other little accidents, it’s good to have the basics at hand.

• A plan. Tell land-based mates

There’s something about catching a fish that can’t really be replicated by any other form of sport or hunting. It might be something primal; after all, humans, as we know them today, aren’t even the original anglers in our family tree.

Half a million years ago, the somewhat ape-like Homo habilis, one of our distant ancestors, was happily fishing by the side of prehistoric rivers.

While he was a spear fisherman, the Egyptians gave us the rod and reel, and some of the first pictures of anglers.

The Greeks, true to form, gave us the first poems about fishing, and the first stories of the big one that got away.

The Romans couldn’t keep fishing off their minds, even at the colosseum. The gladiators known as the retiarius and secutor were dressed and armed as a fisherman and a monster fish, with a trident and net on one side and scaled armour, spikes and knives on the other to represent shark-like teeth.

Today, there are so many ways to catch a fish that our ancient ancestors might wonder why we even have a seafood section at the supermarket.

The modern rod and reel have specialised and advanced to give the

angler four main options. Fish from the shore, with a long surfcaster, designed to allow a massive casting length. Fish from a boat, with live bait of ingenious soft baits that mimic life, or from an even more serious vessel going after big game species like marlin. Fish for trout in the rivers and lakes with a fly fishing rod and reel, attaching intricatelymade lures to mimic insects and waterborne critters.

In England, home of fly fishing, there’s still a technical distinction between ‘game fishing’ for trout and salmon, the fish allowed to be caught by the king and his nobles, and ‘coarse’ fishing, which was allowed for the members of the church like monks and priests and involved all other species.

Auction action saves lives

For the past 15 years, paramedic and Maungaturoto resident Stephen Rosser has been helping the people of Vanuatu’s Malakula island in a very real and vital way.

The island, with no streams or lakes, has been outfitted with water storage and collection technology by the efforts of he and his friends. Stephen’s background and career in the medical field have made him acutely aware of the importance of fresh water, and the shortfalls in governmental health and infrastructure spending in developing nations like Vanuatu.

“It’s a volcanic tropical island with a population of approximately 10,000 people, living in villages with no streams or springs,” says Stephen.

“Over the years, I’ve taken around 250 volunteers there in teams to build freshwater facilities. About 9,000 people have been given access to drinking water. Previously they relied on ‘sea wells’, which become adulterated with salt water at high tide. These can still be used for washing and hygiene, but now the people have fresh water to drink.”

It’s a mission of aid worthy of National Geographic, quietly taking place in our own back yard, but to fund these excursions and the technology to install, Stephen has had to be creative.

He runs regular auctions to turn unwanted goods and donations from well-wishers into fresh water and hope

Unable to travel there this year due to Covid and as the people, he seeks to aid, lose their primary tourism income, Stephen is putting on a huge

auction with a whole household worth of goods. At 6.30pm this Saturday, November 14, at 98 Hurndall Street, Maungaturoto, he will put it all under the hammer. The funds raised will be used to help complete Stephen’s work on Malakula, after which, he says,
