Scholarships exclusively available to Darfield High School students to a total value of $58,000 were announced at the school’s senior prize giving held recently. The 2014 Elizabeth Richards Scholarships for current students have been awarded to Caitlin Brooks, Krystel-Lee McDonald, Sarah McMillan, Jonas Meyer, Courtney Quigley and Claudia Thomas. Elizabeth Richards Scholarships for ex-students went to Vanessa Bragan, Grace Clouston, Michael Frampton, Sarah Schnell, Hannah Singh, Sarah Walker, Stephanie Williams and Lucy Wright. Elizabeth Richards was a well-known local farmer who left a significant endowment to support students from Darfield High School to study agriculture at Lincoln University. Students can reapply for the scholarship annually and potentially can be supported throughout their study. The Hickman Family Trust Scholarships support tertiary fees for a student or students who will study courses of benefit to New Zealand. It was set up by Kevin Hickman, an ex-student of Darfield High School was responsible for building one of New Zealand’s largest companies, Ryman Healthcare. The Selwyn District Council Education Fund Bursary to help with fees in the student’s first year of tertiary study was awarded to Rosie Forbes. Aisling Rayne was awarded The Orion Selwyn District Council scholarship for students who intend to follow a course of study that benefits the wider community. The Malvern Lions Scholarship for students intending to study full time for a recognised qualification was awarded to Kennedy Evans. Waimaria Ross-Marsh was awarded The Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust Scholarship for students who intend to study in health related areas. The 24/7 Spirit of Adventure Scholarship for the senior student who has contributed greatly to the junior school went to Courtney Quigley. University scholarships were also awarded to Darfield High School students through an independent selection process. The Victoria University $5,000 Excellence Scholarship which recognises high academic achievement went to Calum Gray. Tom De Rooy was awarded The University of Canterbury Emerging Leaders Scholarship worth $5,000 for his high academic achievement, leadership potential and sporting, cultural and community involvement. The Lincoln University future leader scholarship assists students of high academic calibre to realise their leadership potential while undertaking tertiary study. This scholarship covers tuition fees and may be re-awarded for up to four years and has been awarded to Hannah Wilson. ¢
