tyres which served an Auckland County Council. It is kerosene petrol start and is complete with a rear winch — a unique machine. Milton went to Ashburton for the 6cyl 1944 Fordson, used for many years on wheat and cropping. There’s also a rare David Brown 2D garden tractor with mid-mounted application for using a range of implements. Dominating the stationary engines is the 1907 Hornsby-Akroyd horizontal single cylinder engine used at Toia’s timber mill at Okaihau — it’s one of few still in working order. “MOTAT people came up to look at it and it took four of us to turn it over,” says Milton. It was hand started using a spin fly wheel. The engine can run on alternative fuels such as waste or vegetable oils. The 1917 3hp Kauri is another engine, New Zealand made, with a single cylinder oil motor that runs on petrol and has a mounted preheating combustible chamber.

Mark Gatland, Northpower’s CEO, says every cent helps in the fundraising appeal.

The Kauri also requires a blow torch to start it. Broadening the collection are lathes, earlier farm life items such as crank handle telephones, and a replica kauri diggers’ shanty, wash board and barber’s strop included! There are also vintage bottles, many recovered by Milton when digging drains on his reclaimed farmland where they had been tossed overboard from the kauri schooners.

“Everyone involved in and around this service – from the paramedics to the volunteers, pilots, office staff and local authorities – is so committed to helping others. The least we can do is return that support.”

Top Energy CEO Russell Shaw says he is proud to still be supporting the service. “We have had our share of employees and their families saved by this service and I am constantly hearing from people in the community who have been helped by it,” says Mr Shaw.

The two electricity companies will together contribute a total of $150,000 to this year’s fundraising campaign, which is officially underway. It will run until late November.

This year’s campaign is again being supported by TVNZ’s Simon Dallow, along with former Black Cap Mark Richardson and many others. General Manager of the Northland Emergency Services Trust, Vanessa Furze, says the organisation is always grateful for the support Northland’s community gives it. “But we are also trying to get our message wider because we are so busy through the summer months due to the influx of tourists from outside the region. For that reason, we ask that those holidaying in the North also help us,” says Mrs Furze. “Since 1988, we have flown close to 17,000 flights and we are becoming busier by the year as our population increases, so we need ongoing donations.”
