Dairy farmers will be aware of the new cooling requirements with data logging starting 2018. These articles are to reinforce the benefits of using your farm water as efficiently as possible to pre-cool the milk, this is generally where the biggest energy saving can be made. My name is Ashton Rench and I grew up on my parents dairy farm at Pakaraka. I wanted to be a fitter and turner/tool maker and was offered an apprenticeship with Des Colebrook in Kaikohe as a Refrigeration Engineer. tubes. The lower tubes were refrigerated with the milk entering the vats below five degrees centigrade and held in the vat at or below this temperature. Milk cooled in this way tasted better, but now it is about shelf life. Now days, through the winter months, our tests show water temperature is often at 12 degrees centigrade, with the milk entering the vat at 20 degrees. The target temperature should be one degree above the farm water temperature. A simple test is to take the water temperature at its source and the temperature of the milk entering the vat, write down the temperatures time and date. This gives a starting
