Sue and David Dreadon — promoting Red Devon cattle for 25 years
S
ue and David have owned Pencarrow Red Devon Stud near Tokatoka since 1985. Prior to that they worked the farm with David’s father Bert, for at least 20 years. Sue says the attraction for the breed firstly came about because of its association with Devon in Cornwall, Britian where the Dreadon ancestors worked the land as tenant farmers. The stud name ‘Pencarrow’ was the area in England the Dreadon’s farmed so it seemed well suited as a name for
when Bert started the Devon herd in 1961. The Red Devon is considered to be one of the oldest recognised breeds. Originally a dual purpose animal it was not only used for meat and milk production, but also used as draught animals. The modern Devon is a medium sized animal with a deep red coat and although originally a horned animal polling has been bred in over the years. Sue says the cattle are well suited
