MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

The Spirit of the Land Lockhart Festival began during the worst drought in the town’s recorded history. It revived community spirit and inspired enthusiasm. “We know we have problems with rural mental health in New Zealand too,” said Tony. “This is a way of bringing people together and doing something more practical than just talking about the challenges we face. “Many issues face farmers in New Zealand. There’s an increase in farmer depression and suicides. This annual rural sculpture festival will encourage farmers throughout the country to take some time out and head to their workshop to create a sculpture that says something about their relationship to their landscape.” Tony said it is an opportunity for rural people to have a go as many may not have considered themselves artists. “There is $11,000 in prize money, enough time to get the creative juices flowing and move a bit of gear around in the shed before entries close in late March.” The Kimbolton Arts and Sculpture Charitable Trust offer a New Zealandwide sculpture award of $5,000 and a Creative Cocky award of $2,000. There will also be a prize of $1,000 for the best ‘local’ sculpture as well as a young person’s award, and a people’s choice award. Sixteen schools within a 30 kilometre radius of Kimbolton are also being encouraged to take part in the competition. The awards are a national event but a special under 18 years section will only be open to an invited 16 schools in the first year of the competition.

Hedgehog by Terry Hawkins Festival Day organiser Stewart Morton said the competition encourages upcycling and recycling. “It’s about seeing what there is already around you that could be used to say something about rural New Zealand,” he said. Sculptures should reflect the resilience, heart, soul and humour of those who live and work on the land, express cultural heritage, unique experiences, and be an individual interpretation of ‘The Spirit of the Land’. The six northern Manawatu villages will work together to create the festival to showcase the sculpture competition. Trustee Darryl Coleman is keen to see Kimbolton known for rural sculpture.

“Sculpture is public. It has something to say to all for us, especially works designed to be displayed outdoors.” “I want to see our village as somewhere people come to see and buy rural sculpture,” he said. Tony hopes it will become an annual event and a fixture on the art competition calendar. “There’s time for rural people to get some sculptures done.” Entries are accepted at www.ruralart. nz.
