17 Hours of live music

“It’s got great prospects, there’s probably around 20 musicians going,” says Joe. He says that the set list will be informal and musicians will choose time slots they want to perform in on the weekend with a total of 17 hours live music over the two days. “Musicians will turn up on an adhoc basis, and you get a group together and  Joe Carbery and the Swingtets will perform at the jazz party in the weekend: Art Cummins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Joe Carbery on alto saxophone and vocals, Julian Russell on perform on the day.” piano, Marty Cullen on bass and Don Hales on drums Jazz originated in the south of the United States and owner, Donice continues on Sunday 9am-4pm with a courtesy Hall-Morris, originally from Texas says, “It’s going van provided for Baylys Beach, Glinks Gully and Dargaville. to take me right back to New Orleans” Entry into the party is free. A concert for all The Holy Trinity Anglican Church will be hosting a fundraising event with a twist on Sunday, October 14 with a variety concert at the Lighthouse Function Centre at Harding Park, Dargaville. “We wanted to do something a little different to raise funds — we hope people will enjoy it. It’s also an opportunity for people to show off what they can do,” says co-organiser, Pat Reed. The audience will be entertained with a variety of 10-minute performances over two hours including solo singers, duets and groups, as well as highland dancers, ballet dancers and Circus Kumarani.

The show will run from 2pm to 4.15pm with afternoon tea provided by the church parish. “There will be a real variety of music styles, from classical to contemporary as well as comical songs and country and western — something for the whole family. I think children will especially enjoy it as many of the performers are young.” Tickets are $15 adult, $5 child and $25 family, available from Gloria’s Flowers and Gifts, Walden’s Shoes and Empire Luncheonette. Mangawhai Art Trail More than 40 artists feature in the Mangawhai Art Trail over Labour Weekend with 14 venues beginning at Studio 50 in the village and ending at Jeanette Vickers art studio at Mangawhai Heads. “It’s a great weekend and the last arts trail we did, around Easter, we had around 400 people attend and I sold out of my abstract photographs,” says Jeanette. Included in the trail is Alene Featherstone who recently won first prize for the painting and drawing category at Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Arts awards. It will be showcased in her studio along with a variety of paintings, drawings and pastel works including large drawings of pioneers depicting old bush themes. “The arts trails keep getting better

and better as they go on” says Alene. Secretary of the Dargaville Arts Association, Pauline Gough, will also showcase her work in the foyer of the new Mangawhai Museum along with 30 other artists. “It will be my second time on the arts trail – I exhibited at Easter and I found the Mangawhai Arts Association to be a really nice bunch of people to work with.” All 14 venues will be open 10am5pm Saturday and Sunday and Jeanette suggests that a good place to begin is at the museum. Maps can be collected at the Mangawhai Information Centre or any of the venues marked with pink flags. See this story at www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz for a full list of venues
