Country Dawn Quilting is coming to town!

Sue Kernot started Country Dawn Quilting from her rural Tikinui property three years ago and it has since grown into a successful internet business, with international buyers. However, the response she received at this year’s Quilt Show, held at Fosters Mall in Dargaville, prompted Sue to move her business to town. Her new headquarters in Gladstone Street, Dargaville has housed many businesses in its time but now provides the perfect location for Sue’s vision. The huge multi-room building will be a shop, packed wall-to-wall with quilting supplies, classrooms and there will also be a gathering spot for quilters to chat and sew. Sue’s mother, Dawn, was a keen quilter and her Aunty, Margaret Needham is a member

of Otamatea Quilters. Both have passed their passion on to Sue, who in turn has passed on the art to friends, like Chrissie Robinson, who is an integral part of helping Sue establish the business.

“At the moment, we’re playing it by ear and things may change, depending on demand,” says Sue. “Initially, we’ll be open from 9am to 3pm from Monday to Friday and until about 1pm on Saturdays.

Sue and Chrissie say that traditionally women came together to quilt and it is a very social art form. The environment at the nearly-opened quilting centre is friendly and welcoming and the emphasis is on people browsing — “it’s not an in-and-out store”. Country Dawn Quilting’s grand opening is on Saturday, November 19.

ireless telegraphy has developed quickly and now attracts so little attention, except when it is the means of announcing some catastrophe, that its simplicity is hardly realised by most people. Complete wireless installations for sending and receiving messages over short distances are now so compact and so cheap that it is quite easy to equip a motor car so that it can communicate with wireless stations or similarly equipped vehicles up to a distance of about 20 miles. This new adaptation of the wireless opens up a question as to whether cars used for touring will carry their own means of communication. There is no doubt that many a tourist when he is stalled on the roadside miles from assistance would welcome a means of communicating with the nearest garage.
