A social group called the Pahi Bookworms that meet once a month to discuss and swap books they have read is extending its activities to support local educational facilities. “We pay a small donation each month and as funds arise we are going to be providing school children with books,” says group member, Lea Dodson. Shown here are fellow bookworm Pat Sutton, left, with Lea and Paparoa school pupils Sam Parker and Elsie Holcroft, with the first of the book donations. “Anyone interested in joining the Pahi bookworms can contact me on 09 431 6296,” says Lea.

Kaipara border collie Cooper has become a canine champion with a win in the National Dog Obedience Assembly held in Auckland. “I burst into tears when I heard the judge’s decision,” says proud owner and trainer, Laurel Greaves, of Pahi, seen here with Cooper and ”competition apprentice” puppy, Georgy. “We have been trying for the award for a while, and Cooper has just missed on a couple of points. This time he just put it all together on the day and I’m thrilled to bits.” The NDOA is an annual Labour Weekend event, held in a different town or city each year, and a premier occasion for dog trial enthusiasts.

The playing fields of Te Kopuru School became a temporary home for a bevy of farm animals during the week as the school held its Pet and Project Day. Some children bought their calves, lambs or goats to school and paraded them before a group of interested judges, watched by parents and classmates. While some animals were a little less than perfectly behaved, their young charges showed grace under pressure, receiving applause from all present. Bianca Hines (pictured) won the Harvey Cup for the best overall dairy animal.
