A petition to ban single-use plastic bags has been presented to the Kaipara District Council in a bid for Kaipara to lead the way as plastic free.
The New Zealand Transport Agency wants to hear community feedback on options for upgrading State Highway 1 between Whangarei and Te Hana to improve safety and journey reliability.
The paper petition has attracted 650 signatures while online it has attracted another 1,559 supporters from all over the world
The petition attracted over 2,000 signatures from supporters in Kaipara, and on line. “I thought I should do something as Love Kaipara educator and as a councillor. Originally it was an idea for Northland, then I thought it would be good to have Kaipara leading the way to change behaviour so I put the petition out there,” said Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock. The council will now send the petition on to the Ministry for the Environment.
“I think that this petition has been invaluable and will be a signal to government that many people feel strongly about this issue,” says Victoria. “There are compostable alternatives that can be used that are plant based materials. “I urge retailers that have the power in this situation to consider a shift to the alternative bags so consumers have a choice.” Kaipara local Margaret Baker co-led the petition alongside Victoria. ¢

The consultation process is part of a series of initiatives the transport agency is planning on behalf of the Government to improve the road alignment to reduce the number of deaths and serious crashes, and provide more predictable journeys on the key route between Northland and Auckland. “State Highway 1 is a vital link between Northland and the rest of the country for freight, communities and tourism. “Around two million tonnes of freight moves between Northland and Auckland each year and tourism in Northland accounts for $1 billion a year. Improving the region’s freight connections will be a game changer for the wider Northland economy,” says the transport agency’s system design manager Brett Gliddon. Te Hana is where the northern Auckland motorway network will
start once the government’s Puhoi to Wellsford Road of National Significance is finished in 2021. Two options for a future bypass of the Brynderwyn Hills are also being presented for public feedback. “We want communities involved from the very beginning to hear their views on the concepts we’ve created and how they think these will work in their communities. “We will then use that feedback to help identify a preferred option for the Whangarei to Port Marsden Highway 4-lane project and the Brynderwyn Bypass,” says Brett. Kaipara community feedback sessions will take place at: Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, August 15, 3pm to 7pm. Tulip cafe, Maungaturoto, August 17, 11am.
