Kaipara’s growth fund windfall u by Paul Campbell

Kaipara is to benefit from a Provincial Growth Fund investment of up to $18.5 million in water storage, and Dargaville is expected to host one of three new Regional Digital Hubs to accelerate economic development — initiatives described by Mayor Jason Smith as “fantastic.”

“Up to $18.5 million will be invested to help investigate and, if feasible, construct community-scale water storage and use options in Kaipara and mid-North,” says Regional Economic Development minister, Shane Jones.

He said the investment had been made for the “real opportunities a more reliable water supply could bring to the region — up to $150m in increased horticulture earnings a year and up to 1,150 jobs created.

“Better access to water will give landowners greater options to develop new markets and maintain and grow a skilled workforce.

Northland Regional Council will receive the funding and will work with other councils in the region, iwi and the community.

The minister also said Northland is getting New Zealand’s first three Regional Digital Hubs (RDHs) to enable people to connect for business and accelerate economic development.

The first hub to open in Kaitaia with the other two likely to be in Dargaville and Kaikohe.

The hubs would connect people for business development and offer services such as free Wi-Fi, co-working spaces and internet skills.

Kaipara District Council is pressing ahead with plans for a 36-kilometre cycleway along the route of the historic Kaihu Valley rail line between Dargaville and Donnellys Crossing, in partnership with Te Roroa and the Department of Conservation.

“Council is now undertaking early engagement with the landowners and leaseholders of properties adjacent to the route to hear their views on the proposal, said council spokesman, Ben Hope.

It will be the first stage of an ongoing engagement process throughout the project and will help the development of a preliminary design for the trail and establish whether there is ongoing community support.

“The project would generate positive benefits for Dargaville and surrounding areas through additional visitor spending on retail, accommodation and food outlets, new employment and business opportunities, and generate social and cultural benefits associated with recreational activities and cultural tourism,” Mr Hope said.

The Kaihu Valley Rail Trail (KVRT) was identified as part of the 2017 review of Kaipara’s walking and cycling strategy and indicated by the council as a priority project to focus on, given the opportunities to generate positive economic, social and cultural impacts on the western side of the Kaipara District.

Central g o v e r n m e n t ’s Provincial Growth Fund has provided an opportunity to seek financial support.

The trail would start and end at the rail station in Dargaville and travel north to Donnellys Crossing utilising the Kaihu Valley railway corridor that was constructed in 1896.

The now redundant railway line runs alongside State Highway 12, and the old embankment can still be seen as part of adjoining farmland.

Driver safety crash course

Students from Dargaville High School and Ruawai College participated in the annual Rotary Youth Driver Awareness programme held at the Dargaville Racecourse recently.

Local Rotarians guided the 120 students around six 30-minute presentations.

p Dargaville High School and Ruawai College students took part in a driver safety course hosted by the Dargaville Rotary Club

Topics included studying personalities and moods and how these affect actions, factors affecting road safety and the effects of crashes and driver distractions. Seatbelts and vehicle safety were also explained with a practical demonstration of how long it takes a car to stop in various conditions.

Crash effects were brought home with a talk by the survivor of a crash who discussed his hoon driving and after having disabled the car’s safety stability features. He explained how the resulting brain injury destroyed his career. Another session dealt with the road death of a young driver, its

causes and the effect on her family and friends.

Rotary President, Viv Trounsen, said the club is proud to have been involved in bringing the RYDA programme to Dargaville youth for many years, ensuring they have a much greater understanding of the complexities involved in driving and how to be safe on the roads.

RYDA, presented by Road Safety Education, was developed by Rotary to give young drivers, at the age they are getting their licences, an understanding of factors that affect driving, with the goal of their developing safe driving habits before acquiring bad ones. ¢

Funding sought for CCTV

A shared initiative of mentoring and developing leadership skills between Dargaville community groups has resulted in a new youth training facility at Dargaville High School.

p The partnership between four organisations has enabled a better future for many students in the Northern Wairoa district

The partnership between Dargaville Police Youth Aid, Dargaville Youth Charitable Trust and Dargaville High School developed from student goals to become physically active and develop a better fitness level in preparation for working in either the army or the police service.

Youth Aid officer Constable Reuben Cohen recognised that many of the youth justice participants are unable to join commercial gyms and arranged for DYCT to apply for funding from Pub Charities. They were granted more than $40,000.

physical training alongside Dargaville High School students, who gain leadership opportunities through helping others.

“As a Dargaville old boy myself, I feel a sense of responsibility to give back to the community. I am grateful to the community partners involved because we couldn’t proceed without them,” Constable Cohen said.

Northland district police commander, Superintendent Tony Hill, was confident the area has an effective facility for helping youth, adding, “Reuben has done an admirable job here.” The programme has successfully placed students in employment. ¢

Dargaville businesses are being asked to contribute to the continuing success of the town’s CCTV system by subscribing funds to support the service.

“Stage one of the system is worth its weight in gold,” says community constable Reuben Cohen. “It’s a vital tool that helps us in our day-to-day operations. It is hard to overstate its importance.”

CCTV project consultant, Sue Curtis says the project priority now is getting funding to support the ongoing network.

“The system is Wi-Fi based and needs funding and adding a small pool towards new cameras. Local businesses will have received an email, and I am following this up talking to them.”

The CCTV project is a collaboration between Dargaville police, the Dargaville Community Development Board and Dargaville Business Forum. ”CCTV is something we probably hope we don’t really want or need, but the reality of life is that with all the other towns in Northland either having or planning CCTV. If our town is not covered it will become a soft

Sound of music alive in Dargaville There are few films more beloved than the 1965 Julie Andrews classic The Sound of Music, set to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s timeless musical score. The cinema gem has been brought to the live stage many times, but it’s a Swiss alp of a mountain to climb, with more costumes, more songs, more characters and more public expectations than nearly any other play which a theatre troupe could choose.

That hasn’t daunted the Dargaville Little Theatre’s all-volunteer cast and crew, however. In recent weeks the pace has picked up as ticket sales get set to begin on April 15. The opening night and a highly anticipated eight-show season follow, from May 11. Hard work is paying off as those well-known songs become second nature for our own local Maria, Captain Von Trapp and his children.

As the season turns, there’s more going on with our firefighting locals as they prepare to tackle the biggest vertical challenge in New Zealand.

Six firefighters from Dargaville will join with others from around the region and around the country to take on the Sky Tower in Auckland on May 18, competing to reach the top of the tallest building in the country while in full kit.

By the numbers, that’s more than 25 kilograms of equipment, carried up a massive 1,103 steps, and it’s all to raise money for research into leukaemia and blood cancer.

Hereford breeders end Northland tour Around 100 passionate Hereford breeders have completed a tour of Northland stud farms recently and spent a day in the Kaipara area, stopping at the Lighthouse Function Centre for lunch.

Two busloads of people disembarked, many enjoying the view over the Northern Wairoa River as they chatted and shared information gained from their morning stops at Arahou, Bill, Wayne and Gaynor Lambeth’s property and the Kaipara stud of Sam and Kate Biddles.

The group travelled on to Ray and Alan McEvoy’s Moana stud before returning to Whangarei.

This year’s tour included stud farms in the mid-north, Whangarei, Dargaville and west coast, providing an opportunity to see different parts of New Zealand and chat with other breeders about

their stock. “They travel every year to a different region to view bulls and their progeny in real time,” said breeder, Wayne Lambeth.

Hosted by the Northland Hereford Club, the members who joined the 2019 NZHA National Herd Tour visited 11 properties and participated in many other activities during their visit. Some of these included fishing, diving, history, ancient forests and stunning beaches in and around Northland.

The next major event for the NZHA is the World Hereford Conference to be held in Queenstown in 2020. ¢

This past Friday, Saturday and Sunday observant locals visiting Dargaville may have noticed a film crew and a team of international television hosts visiting some of our local landmarks. It’s all part of a plan to help visitors from foreign lands experience the quirky, interesting and off-the-beatentrack sights of New Zealand.

Alina from Russia, Mai from China and Terenzo from Korea, are on the road seeking out what makes smalltown Aotearoa different and exciting.

Before reaching the Kauri Coast, they had already visited Kaitaia, Kerikeri and the Far North, and will go on from here to hit the beach at Waipu Cove. While in town the cast and crew of this documentary, which will be broadcast not just overseas but also here in New Zealand on three specialist foreign-language channels via Freeview, stayed at the historic Northern Wairoa Hotel. They admired the renovations, which have restored this colonial-era landmark before also talking to the folks at some local stores, such as Jon Matich Surfwear, Snazzi Gifts and Moran’s Books about local history, good travel gift ideas and more.

With tourism, a huge driver of economic success and a major focus for the development and appreciation of our region being put in the spotlight this way is sure to be good for Dargaville’s profile, both here and

Young rider makes team

From an idea to a vision

“In April last year, a tiny seed of an idea was planted in my mind,” says local artist Heather Carrigan. “By the following November, it had blossomed into a beautiful pulsating Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish, gliding down the floodlit stage of the 2018 Dargaville Wearable Arts Awards.”

Dargaville resident and horse rider, 13-year-old Lydia Carey, has been selected to compete with the Northland Pony Club eventing team and her mother couldn’t be more proud of the achievement.

Jae Carey, Lydia’s mother, said her daughter absolutely works her socks off and deserves this opportunity.

“There hasn’t been a Dargaville person in the team since Candy Whiter more than 15 years ago.”

Lydia started riding her horse, TC Texas Tea, around four years ago and showed him at local A&P shows, also competing in hunter jumping. Since Tex seemed to do well the pair included showjumping in their repertoire for the two following seasons.

They also won champion pony hunter at recent A&P shows locally, after winning p Lydia and Ruby Carey with their horses are ready to take on the challenge of Northland eventing each hunter class entered.

“I’m really proud of both girls; they “It was fun to give it a go after showjumping, and Tex loves it too,” work really hard.

Lydia’s older sister, Ruby, also excels though because the girls have done in the competitive horse world and on all the work,” said Jae. This vision of undersea life was amazing enough, but even more astonishing was the fact that Heather nearly didn’t enter the competition.

“Despite enjoying art and craft, I had never imagined myself as a designer or a dedicated artist,” she says.

“I am not particularly good at planning things. Nonetheless, I decided to tackle it, one step at a time. During the process, I felt surprisingly supported, I was contacted regularly by the organisers to see if I had any questions or if I needed any help with the process. Piece by piece I put my look together.

I found a wonderful model, Jess and finally the finishing touches were in place.”

Creativity for school holidays School holidays are coming soon, and as usual, the search is on for activities to keep kids engaged and interested while they are out of the classroom. Robyn Mitchell and Pat Mortensen are both members of the Dargaville Arts Association, and they are enthusiastic when it comes to sharing their love of colour, shape and form with a new generation. Pat’s painting workshop delivers oil on canvas skills, while Robyn will teach the principle of making fun interactive cards.

Mid Winter Ball and quiz nights. It is in addition to the two places awarded to young women on Spirit of Adventure Leadership Voyages and the Yellow Rose Award for Service to the Community. The Zonta Midwinter Ball will be held again this year on June 22.

“We are a group of women from all walks of life who meet monthly over dinner for fun and friendship. We raise funds to support a variety of projects locally, nationally and internationally as part of Zonta International, a service and advocacy organisation whose goal is to empower women and promote human rights for all.”

The Mangawhai Shed was established two and a half years ago as a place for people of all ages to join together and get creative whilst learning new skills and teaching others the craft of building things.

“The time has come to move to a place nearer the village/heads to allow us to meet with more fellow ‘sheddies’, share and learn skills that help our community whilst having a laugh,” says representative Stephen Mackay.

“I was driven to start something to give people a place to come for a variety of reasons including upskilling and learning how to do things with skilled craftsmen or amateur enthusiasts. We certainly learn from each other and have a lot of fun.

“It is a workshop to make things for ourselves or the community. We have produced items such as bait stations, the Santa float for Mangawhai Beach School, and recently, signs for the Kaipara District Council.”

Going the extra mile - all part of the job It’s a busy time of year on-farm and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choice when making decisions, particularly around regrassing and optimising productivity for the coming season.

We’ve all heard of technology gaining traction on the farm, and we’ve all at one time or another seen the skill and ability of those crafty canines in the sheep dog trials. However, quad bike trials?

It’s a whole different story, even though last week’s big open day for Can-Am happened on what looked a lot like a hilly sheep dog course near Hikurangi.

The aim was to get the 2019 range from the big North American firm out in the paddock and to show prospective riders just how the latest technology grips in the muddy stuff and handles uneven surfaces, sloping ground and gravel.

The reasoning of the dealerships who took part was that reviews could fill in the details, photos can display the looks, but only a hands-on experience in the field can deliver the reality of what Can-Am engineers have achieved.

The open day was held in a field conveniently close to Rouse Motorcycles in Hikurangi, and a group of more than 50 ‘test pilots’ came to take a closer look at the Defender and Commander side-by-sides, the Outlander series of quads and even the powerful Maverick recreational off-road racer. The added hospitality of a barbecue lunch kept spirits high as folks waited their turn in the hot seat, ready to tackle a mixed course, which traversed a hillside and incorporated varied surfaces.
