Winter Warm Up Some like it hot

One thing you really need to maintain a happy and healthy home is a good supply of hot water.

do six people want to shower in the morning? How much are you paying now? Your hot water may be detailed separately on your bill. Information is the key to efficient energy use. A 21st century option for domestic water heating is the sun. Solar water heating uses the sun’s rays collected by photo-voltaic panels mounted on the roof, or in such a location to face the maximum sunlight, to heat water, which is then stored in an insulated hot water tank. On a less sunny day, the system may need back-up heating, usually provided by electricity or gas. Well-designed and installed solar water heating systems

will meet 50–75% of your hot water needs using the sun’s free energy. Keep in mind that the upfront cost is high compared to other hot water systems. Not all properties are suitable for solar water heating — check with your supplier to find out. If you intend to use an electric backup, check with your electricity retailer to see if a cheaper night-rate electricity tariff is available. If you are going to use night rate electric back-up make sure you get a large enough storage tank. As energy concerns become more evident, the use of ‘green power’, either solar or wind, is catching on. ¢

SEASONS ARE CHANGING, TEMPERATURES ARE DROPPING

Your hot water system needs to be able to provide for your entire household, but that doesn’t have to mean compromising on efficiency. There’s a range of options available to suit every household’s needs. Water heating systems tend to either be the traditional hot water cylinder or continuous flow systems which heat water directly as it runs through it, rather than storing the water. Some methods are more efficient than others.

Winter is coming!

Knowing how your household uses hot water will help you make better choices about getting the best energy efficiency, value for money, and experience — ask yourself the following questions when you’re looking at a new hot water system. How big is your household? How many people live in your house now, and how many might there be in the future? How and when you use hot water? Do you need a lot at once? For example,
