“We recognized a gap in the automatic gate opener market for a reliable, robust, truly DIY swing gate operator suitable for the New Zealand rural market,” says Mike. “The beauty of solar gates is they are DIY and easy to install with simple instructions and they have been made specifically to work from solar whereas many other products are ‘adapted’ to work by solar and often don’t work as well. “Most rural properties have that one gate somewhere that everyone gets tired of opening several times a day, Solar Gates NZ has the answer, at the push of a button. “Our swing gate openers are Australian designed, Malaysian manufactured and have been sold in Australia for close to 20 years, predominantly to the rural market largely through A&P shows, Field Days and other such events.”

They are capable of operating up to 14 foot farm gates that are well hinged and swinging freely, yet equally well suited to opening residential driveway gates. The gate openers were designed from the outset to be solar operated. All controls, solar regulators and the batteries are contained in the operator enclosure. “The basic requirements are that the supplied 40W solar panel sees approximately five to six hours of sunlight each day, but even on cloudy days some charging still occurs,” says Mike. “Our systems have been designed to cope with up to 15 openings a day and have a standby time (time the unit will operate with no solar charging) of approximately four days.” The units can alternatively be operated from a low voltage power supply — much like LV garden lighting is —

if a power point is available within 30 metres of the gate. “Compared to other DIY gate openers on the market our operator is specifically designed with solar power in mind. It has been designed to be very energy efficient to eliminate the need for large expensive solar batteries. “They are built strong and simple. The bulk of the work is done by the gearbox utilising CNC cut steel gears with a 5x reduction. Many opposition products use plastic gears. “They are designed specifically for the rural DIY market with plain language, easy to under stand instructions, and compared to other types of operators they have a very simple install criteria with only two easy

measurements to make.” The system can be supplied as one operator to open a single gate, and by simply adding another motor unit the system can operate dual driveway gates. Accessories such as extra remotes, battery powered wireless keypads, and automatic locks for added security are available. “Solar is good at the end of a driveway where there is no power, especially in the country. The remote control which comes with the automation makes it very convenient to use.” Solar Gates NZ are Kirwee, Canterbury-based with tech support available.
