A PATH OF EXCELLENCE

Orthopaedic Associates of Corpus Christi announces the formation of South Texas Bone & Joint, a next-generation musculoskeletal center dedicated to health and wellness. By: [REGINALD JACKSON] The largest and most comprehensive group of orthopaedists in the community is completing a major renovation of the office and enhancement of their brand. The redesigned office will help the practice continue leading a path of excellence in patient care, with a focus on immediate and longterm community medical needs. This next-generation musculoskeletal center offers multiple examination rooms and specialty treatment areas for diagnostic X-ray, ultrasound, casting and comprehensive medical equipment customization. The center also offers the asset of friendly and knowledgeable staff, multi-level and priority, and limited mobility patient parking. Elements throughout the redesigned office were chosen with the patient in mind, and they include comforting décor with soothing colors. The space is further enhanced by complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access, flat-screen televisions and more. “From the moment a visitor enters the office, our

patients and other guests know they have come to the right place,” Dr. Ryan Thomas says. Additional providers add, “Our facility combines state-of-the-art treatment, excellent service and a space with meaningful design dedicated to health and wellness.” The facility is destined to become the model orthopaedic care center in the region, and it is also leading with another first: the South Texas Bone & Joint “Priority Care Center.” This walk-in, musculoskeletal-specific, no-appointment-mandatory clinic is designed to facilitate same-day visits that forego long waits in the emergency room. A primary goal is to help patients with non-emergent orthopaedic injuries avoid the expense and wait times associated with the traditional ER visit. The practice is comprised of all subspecialty-trained orthopaedists covering adult spine surgery, foot and ankle surgery, surgery of the hand and upper extremity, adult joint reconstruction, hip and knee replacement, sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery.

The team of physicians represents the only collection of specialized surgeons of its kind in all of South Texas. The eight doctors are supported by four physician assistants and a certified nurse practitioner, who collectively have multiple years of specialized experience.

“FROM THE MOMENT THEY ENTER THE OFFICE, OUR PATIENTS AND OTHER GUESTS KNOW THEY HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE.” South Texas Bone & Joint continues a greater than 40-year dedication to providing exceptional orthopaedic care throughout the Coastal Bend and beyond, upholding a theme of excellence in patient care. No matter the name, the physicians and staff of South Texas Bone & Joint remain, as always, dedicated to the health and wellness of South Texas.

AMONG THE BEST

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus ChristiShoreline receives the prestigious consumer choice award from the National Research Corporation. By: [STEVEN ALFORD]

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus ChristiShoreline has again been ranked among the highest in the nation for providing high-quality health care and promoting positive patient relationships. The National Research Corporation recently picked CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Shoreline for the Consumer Choice Number 1 Award, which is based upon thousands of patient reviews and health care market comparisons. This 2013/2014 consumer choice award identifies hospitals that health care consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and most positive image throughout the United States. This is the 18th year the National Research Corporation has awarded hospitals whose consumers have recognized them among the best. “We are thrilled to offer this annual award because we understand how important the role of reputation plays in health care consumer decisionmaking,” said Susan L. Henricks, president and chief operating officer at National Research. “These winners have done an outstanding job of representing their organizations in terms of high-quality care, improvement initiatives and positive consumer perceptions and experiences. The consumers have spoken. And we congratulate the winning hospitals in receiving this honor.” The results are based on surveys from more than 270,000 households across the country, recognizing that CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Shoreline has

“WE WORK VERY HARD TO MEET OR EXCEED PATIENTS’ EXPECTATIONS.”

By participating in the survey, hospitals gain insight into their customers’ perceptions of the quality of the health system’s care. Each year, participating hospitals can better follow public perceptions of their care, health data and more, and CHRISTUS Spohn officials recognize that adds up to better hospitals, more informed associates and better care for patients.

reached a level of service that is highly valued by consumers in the Coastal Bend market. The prestigious award was bestowed to only 277 hospitals across the country, while National Research is recognized by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the largest patient satisfaction measurement firms in the United States. This is recognition that CHRISTUS Spohn Health System associates are much honored to receive, according to Paul Gaden, chief operating officer of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Shoreline. “We work very hard to meet or exceed patients’ expectations,” Gaden said. “We are honored to receive this award. It is just another example of the work we do to ensure local residents can have complete trust that the care they are receiving is the best possible.” Organizers say the awards represent the growing role consumer choice plays in the health care field, with a range of factors contributing to patients’ preference of where to receive care.

A LIFELONG CALLING

Longtime CHRISTUS Spohn surgeon Dr. Mauricio B. Teixeira celebrates 40 years of serving Alice. By: [STEVEN ALFORD]

Dr. Mauricio B. Teixeira was recently walking down the halls of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice when a man he didn’t know stopped him to give him a hug. The man explained that the doctor had saved his life decades ago in Vietnam by patching him back together after he was shot in battle. These kinds of occurrences happen often for Teixeira, as he has served as a surgeon in Alice for the past 40 years. There are few families who haven’t been touched by his hands, whether working to save victims of car wrecks, jobsite accidents or other trauma. Teixeira has saved countless lives in South Texas over the years. “I’ve made a lot of friends in Alice,” the doctor

12

said while reflecting on four decades in the community. “There’s a lot of friendship and love here.” Teixeira’s interests began when he was a young boy growing up in a small town in northeastern Brazil. There were no doctors, pharmacies or even schools in his impoverished town. One day, his mother took him to the county’s capitol city to have his eyes checked. They passed a large hospital, and for the first time, his mother told him of her brother’s death from appendicitis, a treatable condition. “It left a big impression on me,” Teixeira said. “I thought, ‘If I’m around, I don’t want anyone to die.’ It inspired me to learn more about medicine and surgery.”

He studied hard in a nearby school, worked his way into a private school for teens and eventually made his way through six years of medical school. There, he was selected for a prestigious apprenticeship to a respected surgeon who suggested Teixeira visit the United States to learn English and more about medicine. Teixeira applied for a visitor’s visa, but was given a full immigration visa instead. After a few months working in a Plainview, Texas, hospital, Teixeira learned why he’d been so readily welcomed into the country – he was drafted to the raging war in Vietnam. It was 1968. “I was single, I was young and I had no family here in America,” he explained. “I was ready to go.” He attended basic training in Georgia and within the year, found himself in a hospital situated along the Ho Chi Minh trail, a turbulent area that received frequent bombings. He was trained as a military surgeon, performing more than 150 amputations and overseeing more than 800 medical procedures. Out of all of those, Teixeira proudly recalls that he never lost a patient. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions. In 1971, he returned to Texas to finish his residency in a small town called West. They welcomed the young Brazilian doctor as one of their own. It was there, during a party thrown by other Brazilian immigrants, that he would meet his future wife, In-

grid, who was then a student at nearby Baylor University. “I knew this was the girl,” Teixeira said. “She was just beautiful.” It was about this time that a friend, also a doctor, began telling him about a small town in South Texas called Alice. Teixeira was invited to look around the city, which was in need of a talented surgeon. He visited the hospital there, but acknowledged it needed major upgrades before he could consider relocating. Six months later, the head of the Alice hospital called to say they had added more rooms and new, high-tech equipment to the operating rooms. It was everything he had requested. Teixeira and his fiancée soon left for Alice and the Coastal Bend, arriving in November 1973. He has worked as a surgeon there ever since. The family raised two children and watched the town grow. Some decades, Teixeira was the only surgeon for hundreds of miles. In that time, he’s seen it all. He’s patched together car wreck victims and gunshot wounds. His staff proudly recalls the time he sewed

a man’s heart back together after he had been stabbed in the chest. “There are very few families from Hebbronville to Alice where I have not operated on someone,” he said. And that’s what he has loved about surgery all these years. “Someone comes in with a serious injury, and you fix them up, clean them up, and that’s it,” he added. “They heal and recover. I like the immediate result.” In the past four decades, Teixeira has had many offers to move elsewhere and practice, but he says Alice is his home. He raised his family there, and he’s operated on thousands of residents and visitors. He has an indelible link to the South Texas community. “A lot of people will come up to me and stop me to say ‘thank you’ for saving their life or the life of their loved one,” Teixeira said. “That’s why I do what I do.” And at 76 years old, he doesn’t have any plans of slowing down. He still performs about 500 operations annually. But this year has been a sentimental one for Teix-

eira. Though he is celebrating a milestone in his career, he also lost the love of his life to breast cancer during the summer, just a few months shy of their 40th anniversary. A large picture of his beloved wife hangs in the doctor’s longtime office, looking down on him each day. The community has rallied around Teixeira during his loss, making sure he is taken care of. It’s something for which he is very grateful. He relishes his time with his two children and his four grandchildren, and he lives to serve those in South Texas as he continues to save lives each day. It’s a lifelong calling that has touched many in a community that hasn’t forgotten his contributions. “There are really good people here,” Teixeira said. “It’s a wonderful place to call home.”

KEEPING THE “KING” IN CHECK The low down on low T: what to do if you suspect your testosterone levels could use a boost By: [AARON I. GARZA]

Meet Bob. He’s in his mid-40s, hardworking and at the peak of his business career. He’s married to a beautiful wife, and he has two daughters who think the world of him. Bob tries to take care of himself; he goes to the gym three times a week and makes decent decisions when it comes to his diet. But lately, something’s been missing. He just doesn’t seem to have the pep in his step he used to. By the time 2 p.m. rolls around, he finds himself dragging, tired and needing a nap. Bob’s also noticing a slight decrease in strength and muscle, not to mention his pants just don’t seem to fit the same. Now, Bob can deal with the strength and energy decline, but the one thing that seems to really be getting him down is his love life. Things are changing, and Bob doesn’t like it. But there is good news: What Bob is experiencing is extremely common in men over 40, and it can be reversed. If Bob’s scenario sounds familiar and you can relate, chances are you could be suffering from low testosterone levels, otherwise known as “low T.” Testosterone, as we all know, is the “king” of male hormones. It is responsible for a host of functions, including strength, energy, mental clarity, fat loss, sex drive and overall wellness. As men age, testosterone levels can drop and cause a host of sometimes serious problems such as weight gain, depression, lack

Low T can be caused by a number of conditions, including testicle damage, obesity, hormonal disorders, kidney or liver disease, diabetes and medications, as well as age. Blood tests can determine what your testosterone levels are and open the door for discussion with your doctor. Today, many options are available that will help replace testosterone if and when needed. These include patches, implants, gels and injections, but they may have drawbacks and, of course, side effects that could affect other areas of your health. So what’s a man to do? Although sound nutrition, diet and exercise play a role in optimizing any man’s testosterone levels, there is more and more scientific validation showing the benefit of using certain supplements to naturally increase existing testosterone levels. When I encounter a client with low T (which has been validated with blood tests), he usually has come to me as a last resort. He has visited with his physicians and understands his issue, but he wants an alternative to pharmaceuticals. As a supplement formulator by trade, I immediately pursue a direction that can promote the body’s natural ability to heal or restore its normal balance naturally. Up until recently, there were very few effective natural products to help restore and

D-ASPARTIC ACID OFFERS A NATURAL AND SIDE EFFECTFREE WAY OF ENHANCING THE BODY’S NATURAL TESTOSTERONEPRODUCING ABILITIES. of energy, diabetes, high blood pressure and most strikingly for some, erectile dysfunction. That last one seems to really get most men on edge, but it’s the truth, and today, more and more men are beginning to ask the question, “What can I do to increase my testosterone levels?” First, it’s important to understand what’s considered low. The bottom of a man’s normal testosterone range is around 300 nanograms per deciliter, and the upper limits are between 1,000 to 1,200 ng/dl.

14

improve testosterone levels in men. This changed a few short years ago with the introduction of D-Aspartic Acid (a naturally occurring amino acid found in the neuroendocrine tissues of humans.) D-Aspartic Acid has valid scientific studies establishing its effectiveness. In fact, an Italian study recently demonstrated that giving 3 grams (3,000 mg) of D-Aspartic Acid to individuals daily for 12 days increased serum testosterone by 35 to 45 percent. This is the most significant effect on tes-

tosterone that has ever been documented through the use of a natural supplement. Until recently, D-Aspartic Acid wasn’t available as a supplement because it was only sold as an Aspartate (this version is not effective.) The D-Aspartic form is what actually was used in the study and shows the most promise. D-Aspartic Acid was originally only available in Italy (where the study was completed), but it has now slowly made its way to U.S. soil through a novel new supplement called T-Drive. T-Drive, which uses a patented form of D-Aspartic, releases quickly into the blood stream and elevates testosterone levels within 48 to 72 hours. My advice is to compound this product with other natural products, including one called TestoPlex, which combines other well-studied testosterone elevators such as magnesium, zinc and Bulgarian tribulus. Although not as effective as true pharmaceutical testosterone, D-Aspartic Acid offers a completely natural and side effect-free way of enhancing the body’s natural testosterone-producing abilities. The initial results have been very positive, and I’ve personally witnessed several men (who have done blood work pre- and post-D-Aspartic Acid supplementation) experience increased testosterone levels, improved wellness and, of course, enhanced sexual performance. If you feel like you could be suffering from low T, you owe it to yourself to get your testosterone levels checked and perhaps give a product like T-Drive a go. It may be your answer to improving those certain aspects of life that truly count. T-Drive can be purchased at www.thepureline.com or at any Pureline Nutrition store in Texas.

A SPECIAL EXPERIENCE RADIOLOGY & IMAGING: MAKING WAVES IN THE COASTAL BEND SINCE 1952 By: [SARAH TINDALL] Photography: [DUSTIN ASHCRAFT]

RADIOLOGY & IMAGING HAS SERVED THE COASTAL BEND WITH THE LATEST IN CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND EXPERTISE IN MEDICAL IMAGING SINCE 1952, and the group is now proud to announce that they’ve added a new international suite with the most advanced angiographic equipment in the city to the Alameda location. Dr. Ayar has spent the last 14 years at Radiology & Imaging, and he will head up the new suite in conjunction with his partners, Drs. Aitken and Hein, who have been with Radiology & Imaging for 17 years and 13 years, respectively. The new interventional suite offers the latest technology in the city for the treatment of vascular disease. It also features advanced imaging algorithms that significantly reduce the radiation dose to patients. The center is also proud to add a new laser device that removes plaque deposits in arteries supplying blood to the legs. Ayar is the only physician in town using the new laser that makes the angiographic equipment so successful. He saw his first patient on Dec. 17, and since then, this new equipment has been making waves in town because of its ability to perform outpatient procedures like opening the narrowing of an artery without invasive surgery and with reduced side effects like reducing the return of the narrowing. Ayar is most excited about the potential for reduced amputations that this exciting technology makes possible. “Before this, a patient whose arteries were too narrow for surgery would have very few options,” he says. “The artery would finally get so small that the patient would eventually be forced to amputate the limb. Now, with an easy outpatient procedure, we can repair those arteries and get the blood flowing again in one day, putting off or even eliminating the need for amputation. “We used to have to perform angioplasty on these patients, inserting a bal-

loon to re-enlarge the artery, and then a metallic tube (stent) to prop it open, but these procedures are both associated with the narrowing coming back. In this new procedure, one laser eviscerates or burns the narrowing, thereby reducing the risk that the narrowing will come back. “For some lesions, we recommend surgical bypass, which is what most patients used to have to do, but now we are able to treat most patients with these newer technologies. For many, that is the only procedure they need, and in others, we’ve delayed the bypass. This is especially beneficial for candidates for whom bypass is not an option because the arteries were so narrow that in the past, amputation was the only option.” The outpatient procedure is simple: Patients go to the center in the morning, give a complete medical history and receive a physical exam. Then the patient is sedated and lies on the surgical table, where Ayar passes a catheter through the groin and takes pictures of the arteries that supply blood to the abdomen and legs. Based on the images they see, the team tailors a treatment plan for each individual patient. The outpatient procedure (the angiogram itself ) takes about an hour or more, and if the team has to open up blood vessels, it may be another hour. The patient is placed on bed rest at the center for two to four hours and then sent home – so what is a life-improving operation for so many is complete in just one day. “The majority of our patients are diabetic, as our F E B R U A R Y- M A R C H 2 0 1 4 / N S I D E C O A S TA L B E N D

“RADIOLOGY & IMAGING IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF PATIENT COMFORT AND CARE.”

area sees some of the worst rates of the disease in the country,” Ayar says. “This procedure and technology gives them better treatment options with better results.” As the only physician in town doing this laser procedure at the only facility in town with this equipment, Ayar is looking forward to the opportunity this gives the people in South Texas. “I’ve been working here for 14 years treating

peripheral vascular disease, and it’s just so satisfying to see how patient care is improving with these new technologies,” he says. “When a little old lady who can’t walk to the grocery store anymore has this procedure and calls us afterwards to tell us that she can walk and take care of basic needs of her family, I feel we’re making tremendous progress.” Ayar also gives a warning to people suffering from diabetes or other causes of arterial deterioration: Patients begin with difficulty walking, but as the narrowings get worse and worse, areas of ulceration appear, followed by tissue loss and eventually amputation. His goal is for the public to know that the longer they wait, the more difficult the damage is to repair. The earlier these treatments are sought, the better the outcomes will be and the sooner normal activities can be resumed. Vascular patients are not the only patients who will benefit from the new angiography suite, however. Ayar says among other procedures, it will also be used for treatment of cancer patients, including procedures such as chest port insertions. In this way, this new treatment integrates well with the rest of the Radiology & Imaging centers because patients undergoing their cancer staging imaging can have the port maintained at the same facility, thereby reducing trips to treatment centers. But the thing for Ayar that really makes his fa-

cility special is the folks with whom he works. “The support staff here make it a special experience – excellent nurses and technologists who put the patient first. That, combined with the latest in technology, keeps Radiology & Imaging at the forefront of patient comfort and care.” If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about these procedures, Ayar says you can go to your doctor to see if this treatment is right for you or call Radiology & Imaging directly to schedule a consultation.

ERIN P. WHITE DID NOT KNOW SHE WAS GOING TO BE A LICENSED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST specializing in pediatric rehabilitation until she was in college. Growing up in Alice, Texas, with parents who always maintained very active and athletic lifestyles, health and fitness have been part of White’s life for as long as she can remember. “It was a natural progression for me to become actively involved, and I found running to be something I was very good at and enjoyed wholeheartedly,” White says. To this day, she is an avid runner who has participated in several of half-marathons and is currently training for her third one, and who set a personal goal to run in her first full marathon (26.2 miles) in February 2014. Attending UTSA in fall 1995, White remained there for two years and fulfilled the prerequisite course requirements for several of her choice occupational therapy (OT) schools throughout Texas. “I took a year off before applying to OT school knowing that I’d need to be 110 percent focused on my education in order to succeed in acquiring my degree. I felt that I needed a little more time to mature to become an OTR (registered occupational therapist). I moved back to Alice and worked as a ward clerk at the local hospital. That experience very likely helped my acceptance into OT school, and it provided me with a rich background in medical terminology and commonly treated diagnoses.”

White was accepted to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s School of Allied Health Sciences, and she graduated in August 2000. “I acquired a BSOT degree, a new family in my fellow classmates and developed self-confidence that has not only carried me through my professional career, but may in fact have been more valuable than the degree itself.” White’s wonderful personality, character, class and remarkable honesty and sense of humor are attributes that become obvious from the moment you meet her. It is impossible not to like, admire and respect the woman she has become. The diversity of her profession seems endless. OT is very unique in that a licensed professional can specialize in mental health, neurological rehab, orthopedic rehab, geriatric rehab, pediatric rehab, NICU/PICU rehab, hand therapy, hippotherapy, ergonomics and environmental modification, schoolbased consultation, DME assessment/fitting, orthotics fabrication and the list continues. Furthermore, the variety of settings in which OT services are provided is equally diverse; inpatient services are provided in hospitals and long-term care facilities, and outpatient services can be provided in hospitals and private clinics, in homes, in equine arenas, in swimming pools and once again, there are a plethora of options. “With one degree, I realized that I could be a different kind of therapist multiple times throughout my life, if I so desired,” White says. “My choice solidified; I committed to the profession.” White gives credit to the clinical leadership of Tere Sariol, OTR, at Brown Schools Rehab in Austin. “I was offered a fulltime position upon graduation and obtaining my professional license in the winter of 2000, but only remained there for one year, as I elected to move back to my hometown and raise my newborn son close to my family. My short stay at Brown School became the foundation for every professional decision, continuing education course

and treatment technique I’ve used since then. I fell in love with the pediatric population in this setting and more importantly, the child challenged with neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral disorders.” After a few jobs, in October 2007, White accepted a position as the first fulltime staff OTR with National Nursing & Rehab in Corpus Christi, providing pediatric home-based OT services. She is the lead OT who is responsible for managing the OT department, which services Corpus Christi/Nueces County and nine surrounding counties. The service area was much smaller when White started in 2007, but since then has expanded to its current size due to a great group of both fulltime and contracted therapists who love the pediatric population and are committed to excellence. White carries her own caseload and supervises several certified occupational therapy assistants (COTAs). As one of two staff OTRs, she jointly supervises the COTAs based on the demographic area of each therapist’s caseload. “Managing a team of seven occupational therapists and over 115 patients, coordinating treatment and evaluations around both the patients and a multidisciplinary team’s schedules can sometimes be very challenging,” White says. “I am incredibly fortunate to work amongst a team of therapists who consistently bend over backwards to ensure that all services are provided and evaluations are performed in a timely manner to maintain uninterrupted therapy services in the best interest of each and every child receiving our services. This is why National remains home to me; I am truly part of an amazing team of clinicians. “I cannot begin to tell you how many parents of children who have been referred for my service look at me with confusion as to why their child has been referred for occupational therapy. They’re children; they don’t work! So I explain ‘occupation’ is a generic umbrella term that encompasses everything we do. A child’s occupation is to learn to

use his body in a controlled way to play and learn, to perform his own self-care as he becomes older and to participate in academic activities that will enable him to successfully progress through his school years.” White treats children born with disabilities, children who have acquired disabilities through trauma or illness, children with developmental delays, children with mental health disorders and children with atypical sensory processing and modulation as it affects their ability to successfully engage in activities of daily living in a meaningful way. In performing skilled OT, White provides caregiver education on the children’s individual needs. She offers suggestions for both activity and environmental modifications for safe and successful engagement in daily routines, and she facilitates acquisition of equipment including hand splints, wheelchairs, bath seats, car seats, gait trainers and safety equipment such as helmets. White also aids in the referral process for additional services as she indentifies those needs. “I love the home health setting because I feel that being immersed in the culture of each family provides me with the greatest window of opportu-

nity for weekly caregiver education and long-term patient outcomes. I am given a bird’s eye view of factors that might limit or prevent progress and adapt my plan of care to meet, circumvent or tackle those challenges.” White’s success with her patients and their families is due in part to her philosophies. She provides compassionate, honest and quality individualized care and caregiver education based on the realistic needs of both the individual child and the family while remembering to be as much a recipient of the gift of each child as she is a therapeutic tool for the child. Perhaps her informal philosophy is the best of all. “I’m a pediatric therapist, and I know that a child is a child only once. Just because their bodies and minds don’t cooperate doesn’t mean that they don’t crave play. I hug, kiss, tease, love, sing and play with every child. I also laugh with their families and engage the other children in the home.” Her strong work ethic and her emphasis on playing have brought a wealth of successful outcomes for her patients. And with each success, White has accomplished what she set out to do, and she continues to devote her “all” to each child she cares for.

C orpus C hristi L iquor C atering ✷ ✷ ✷

When Cocktails Are Called For... White would like to grow the OT department by at least two more FTEs so that they can further increase the number of patients they are able to accept. This is particularly the case in the rural Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells and Kleberg counties. “Someday, I would like to have the opportunity to open a multidisciplinary school designed specifically for children with disabilities and special needs that would infuse daily therapies that continue to follow the medical model of care,” White says. “I want to incorporate certified teachers and licensed counselors to meet the full needs of the families raising the children attending the facility. This may or may not be a realistic dream, and I have yet to start the process of researching the concept because I am still a single mother of two of my own young children. But I am confident that my time will come when I’ll be able to create a therapeutic setting that infuses rehabilitation, academia and intense caregiver education and training.”

HAVEN FOR THE HEALING ARTS

By offering quality massages, exotic orchids and a broad variety of fine teas, the Orchid Tea Garden provides patrons with a uniquely tranquil experience. By: [WEI CHUNG YI]

Unique: That’s the best word available to define the Orchid Tea Garden. Mark Weber, his wife, Nancy, and their daughter, T’ai Li, worked day and night for three months prior to opening to create an environment unique to Corpus Christi, and dare we say, South Texas. Ask Mark and he will tell you that he thinks of it as a tranquility center – sort of a refuge against the frenetic stress of mundane life. He’ll also tell you that he dreamed he was in this shop selling exotic orchids and fine teas, and as a result, he was determined to bring the dream to life. In discussions defining the concept, he and Nancy also loved the idea of creating a space where T’ai Li could practice massage therapy. “I

told [T’ai Li], ‘I need your expertise to make this work – how would you like to be our spa coordinator?’” Mark says. T’ai Li has been a licensed massage therapist for several years now, working in various establishments such as Anthony’s here in Corpus, Woodhouse Day Spa in San Antonio and Massage Envy in Houston. She is committed to providing clients with a quality massage based on listening to their needs. She is highly skilled in her craft and knowledgeable regarding many associated healing subjects. Her interest probably began when she listened to her mother, Nancy, who is an R.N. and a former

licensed acupuncturist. “I had an acupuncture practice in Vermont after an injury that temporarily derailed my nursing career,” Nancy explains. “But T’ai’s father and I had a long history of being interested in traditional Chinese medicine, T’ai Chi and Chinese martial arts. T’ai Li was raised with discussions of qi (life force) and herbal medicines in the house, and her curiosity set her on the road to the healing arts.” The Orchid Tea Garden is a wonderful combination of their three perspectives on environment, décor and service. The uniqueness of this shop doesn’t stop with the ambiance. Any one of them will proudly tell you that they have more varieties of fine tea than anyone in Corpus, and that the only place you can see more orchids is the botanical gardens – but then, they point out, those aren’t for sale. Mark has a long history as a merchant, working for several retail companies, and he’s not shy when it comes to talking about the need to support local merchants rather than always shopping at the huge corporate stores. “You can go to Lowe’s, H-E-B or Walmart and buy a moth orchid, but good luck finding someone on their staff who can tell you how to care for it,” he says. “No offense, but why would you buy a specialized plant like an orchid where you buy tires or groceries? Walmart wants to sell you everything so you shop only with them, but the 20-something

I’ve worked for the big-box stores; they’re not conducive to specialized learning like in a small local merchant’s shop.” The Orchid Tea Garden currently has more than 120 varieties of fine teas: black, oolong, pu-erh, white, herbal, rooibos and the unique yellow tea. Likewise, it carries multiple sub-species and hybrids of the major orchid species: Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Cattleya, Vanda, Epidendrum, Noble Dendrobium, etc. “We just recently sold a very unusual black orchid,” Mark says. “It was a Catasetum species hybrid called a Millennium Magic Witchcraft. It’s a shiny pitch black, the blackest of all the so-called black orchids, with two spikes of about 20 flowers.” Whether it’s exotic orchids, fine teas or a quality massage or scrub you want, we suggest that you visit the Orchid Tea Garden for a unique experience, for a quality product or service and to meet one of the nicest family-operated businesses in Corpus.

LONGTIME LOVEBIRDS

After 61 years of marriage, the good times are still rolling for Rev. Sam and Diane Gottlich. [SPECIAL TO NSIDE]

“COMMITMENT TO EACH OTHER IS WHAT HAS KEPT US TOGETHER.” young age, you never know how situations will unfold. Little did I know, I would eventually marry the man of my dreams.” “I courted her for four years before we got married,” Sam laughed. “I knew she was worth the wait,

and the day we got married was one of the happiest moments of my life.” When Sam and Diane were newlyweds, Sam worked for his father at their family corporation. While he enjoyed his work, the feeling of unfulfillment would not leave him. After 10 years of soul searching, Sam realized his true calling was ordained ministry. With full support from his wife, their three children and the family dog, Sam and the rest of the family packed up and moved from Texas to Virginia so Sam could attend theological seminary. Three years later, after Sam completed his preordained ministry studies, the couple moved back to Corpus Christi, where Sam was ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church. Priesthood gave the couple an opportunity to travel and touch many lives along the way. God blessed the couple with three wonderful children, which has now multiplied to six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. So what advice for a long and happy marriage do these longtime lovebirds have to offer? “Commitment to each other is what has kept us together,” Diane said. “After your children leave home, you are together again as a couple. If you haven’t continued to tend to that relationship, then the issues you had been ignoring while the children were at home will be front and center once again.” “It’s important for young people to know and love who they are as individuals first,” Sam added. “Since they are pledging that person to their future spouse, that person should be the strongest and

truest representation of themselves.” The couple looks forward to celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary with their new friends at Mirador. With the worry-free lifestyle Mirador offers, every day is wedded bliss for Sam and Diane Gottlich.
