The Great Southern Italy ShakeOut is coming From the NSA Naples Emergency Management Office
At 10:18 a.m. Oct. 18, residents of Southern Italy will “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during the Great Southern Italy ShakeOut sponsored by Naval Support Activity Naples. The first ShakeOut was held in California in 2008 as an effort by scientists and emergency managers to inform the public about earthquake preparedness. Since then, the ShakeOut has spread across the United States and the world, including ShakeOuts in 2012 in New Zealand, Japan, Puerto Rico, Guam and now Southern Italy. The NSA Naples Emergency Management Office obtained the funding to conduct a Great
Naples ShakeOut, but after the U.S. Consulate in Naples and the Italian Agency for Civil Protection showed interest in participating, the event was expanded include the entire Southern Italy region and to develop ShakeOut web pages in both English and Italian. How do you participate in the Great Southern Italy ShakeOut? It’s easy. Just register yourself, your family or your organization online at www.shakeout.org/ italia. Individuals, families, schools and organizations can participate by doing as little as performing a “drop, cover and hold on” drill wherever they happen to be at 10:18 a.m., or by performing full-blown exercises such as building evacuations, mustering, accountability re -
porting, and casualty management. More information about ShakeOuts can be found on the website. Including the State Depart ment and Italian disaster preparedness authorities in the ShakeOut will help ensure that preparedness information is available not only to the populations of the U.S. Navy bases in Naples and Sigonella, but also to Southern Italian citizens and U.S. citizens living and working in Southern Italy. The NSA Emergency Man agement Office staff hopes that this ShakeOut is just the first of many, and that it becomes an annual event so that earthquake preparedness is always at the forefront of the minds of residents of Southern Italy.
