Kay Temme, Patron of the Month Oceana Fitness Center would like to present and congratulate The Patron of the Month: Kay Temme. Kay started working out here six years ago when she retired. She’s grateful that her husband, Bob, always a fitness buff, started “dragging” her to the gym with him even though she was not motivated! She toyed with weights and cardio workouts, but was intrigued by the variety of fitness classes offered at the Oceana Gym. Although she

THE ZONE • OCT/NOV/DEC 2013

4

thought they’d be fun to try, she was scared to death to take the first “step” and join a class. With the nudging of a few of her gym friends, she built up her courage and tried the Core Fitness Plus Class (WOW, what a great workout!). She went on to try Triple Threat (Kay states she could barely breathe, but was exhilarated!). So with a “what the heck” attitude, she got really brave and tried Vinyassa Yoga and Spin! Kay discovered joints and muscles she never knew she had, and initially felt hopeless as she could hardly do any of the yoga positions, and yearned to fall back into “Child’s Pose” to rest. But for some strange (masochistic) reason, she LOVED it! The idea of building balance, flexibility and strength is exactly what she wants to do, and her 68-year-old aches and pains seem to be disappearing. Kay states that she gets a little better with every class and is determined that one day she’ll really be GOOD at balancing on one foot. Who knows, may even be able to stand on her head! Kay is a great example of being able to achieve and maintain fitness at any age!

Lessons are available by reservation — call to set your day! Includes all equipment and a 90-minute training that is tailored to your specific needs.

ARCHERY BASICS

Bring your own bow and our range personnel will assist you in “getting on point”!

SPORTING CLAYS BASICS

Give it a try! It’s “different” and EXCITING! We have certified pullers who will help tailor the targets to your needs and ability.

Mastering the mental side of skeet will ensure that you are completely ready each and every time you call for the bird and will help control the pressure of competition. What it will not do is help you make the shots where you are not fundamentally sound. If you cannot hit high two, low five, low six (typically the shots most people have problems with), or whatever your particular bugaboo is every time in practice, then the best that mastering the mental game can do for you is to insure that you don’t miss that particular shot any more often than you do in practice. If you can only hit low six 50 percent of the time in practice, or 75 percent of the time, or 90 percent of the time, then that is the best you can hope for in competition! On the other hand, I guarantee you that if you don’t master the mental

side, your problems with a particular shot that you haven’t mastered will only get worse under the pressure of competition. If you have a problem with a certain shot, then you need to take a box of shells—or ten boxes or a thousand boxes of shells— and practice that shot until you have mastered it. Ask your practice buddies to help you. If all else fails, get expert help. (Actually, it might not be a bad idea to start with expert help. You might save yourself 990 of the thousand boxes of ammo and a couple — Dave Lattimer

Turkey Shoot

Nov. 13 • 11:30 a.m. Shotgun Aeropines Golf Club $45 Military & $50 Guests

It’s not how you drive, it’s how you arrive. When you look at the practice facility, you will normally find 10 golfers on the driving range and maybe one on the putting green. I want you to find a club in your bag that you can consistently hit 180 yards straight away. Then pull it out on the tee box and hit your shot 180 yards, go to the ball, use the same club and hit it another 180 yards. You are now around every par four on the course. Do that same thing three times on the par fives. You then chip up onto the green and then two putt. You will bogey every hole on the course and shoot a round of 90 (not bad)! Now make one of the putts and you will already be shooting in the 80s even better. If we would think about scoring more than we think about trying to hit the ball as far as we can, then we would find that we could improve our game a lot faster. I hope this helps while learning the game of golf. — Randy E. Clark

KAYAK SAFETY As with all recreational activities, there is always the possibility of injury or death. Always use common sense and follow all safety rules at all times. Some helpful safety tips: • Be aware of weather conditions and water temperature. Prepare for changes in weather and the possibility of a capsize. If paddling in cold water, a wet suit or dry suit can keep you warm and comfortable. In warm weather, a long sleeve shirt can provide sun protection. • Invest in appropriate clothing for your climate. One advantage of sit-inside kayaks is that you can shield yourself from some of the elements, while siton-tops leave you more exposed. Dress for the day. • Beware of offshore winds that make it difficult to return to shore. • Always follow the boating rules of the area you’re in. • Never mix alcohol or drugs (prescription or non-prescription) with boating. • Never exceed the weight capacity of your boat and always check your equipment for wear and tear before you paddle.

NAVY

WOUNDED WARRIOR SAFE HARBOR

• Seek qualified instruction to learn proper paddling techniques, water safety and basic first aid. • Brush up on self-rescue first in calm, warm, shallow water, and again in more extreme conditions. • Most importantly, WEAR YOUR PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE. Coast Guard regulations require that all kayaks have a life jacket on board. Wearing your life jacket will help keep your head above water and add insulation to your body, keeping you warmer in cold water. There are great PFDs designed specifically for paddlers. Buy one that fits well, and always wear it while you paddle. • Tell someone your paddle plan, which includes: where you are going, what you will be doing, how long you expect to be gone and how many people are in your party. Then stick to your plan. • Paddling in the surf zone or in rivers can be dangerous. Always wear a helmet. • Stay hydrated. Always bring plenty of water and food. • When paddling in a new area, check with the locals regarding currents, shoreline conditions and weather patterns. Plan an “escape” route - an alternative place to get off the water should environmental conditions dictate it. Abiding by these rules will help to make your kayak adventure safer and fun.
