Fifty-one nippers competitors from Lennox Head Alstonville SLSC punched above their weight at the Far North Coast Branch Championships at Cudgen on 15-16 February 2014. In an action packed weekend, Lennox competitors battled it out in hot and rough conditions, and achieved excellent results in both individual and team events across seven age groups to finish a respectable third behind Cudgen and Byron Bay. “Our competitors did themselves, their parents and their club proud. Whether people were making a final for the first time, coming together to compete as a team, or digging deep as they battled the tough ocean conditions, our nippers performed with skill, determination and great sportsmanship,” said Team Manager Bob Mills. “Our team placed on 47 occasions which is an incredible achievement for a club our size, and this is testament to the hard work of our competitors, the efforts of their age managers and all the other people working hard behind the scenes at Lennox to give these kids the best chance of success.” “I want to acknowledge the efforts of our

U14 team who were competing at their last nippers carnival as juniors. This small team of just six - Jack Alder, Luke Mounic, Shaylla Young, Angus Mahon, Jake Croft and Guy Falconer – shone throughout the competition. In addition to taking home gold in the swim team, board relay and beach relay events, there were also a string of individual top three placings.” “Jack Alder was king of the beach, and medalled in every event he competed in. He played a pivotal role in each of the team events, and came away with nine medals including individual gold in the beach sprint, iron-man and flags, silver on the board and bronze in the swim and all age board relay. Special mentions also to Shaylla Young and Luke Mounic, who received five medals apiece.” Other notable mentions are U12 competitors Emily Croft and Nick Mounic; Maisy Miller from the U11’s; Clancy Miller from the U9’s, and U8 competitor Maalik Moston. Participating North Coast clubs included hosts Cudgen, Fingal Head, Salt, Cabarita, Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Ballina, Evans Head and Yamba.

LOCAL PROFILE Bringing locals together.

care and strongly believe that there is no excuse for looking the other way.

What do you like the most about the northern rivers?

Tell us about your career?

As a Bachelor trained Early Childhood teacher with over 15 years’ experience, I have worked with children and families within a diverse range of services from Private Nanny to community preschools and specialised government run services. After many years of working in the field; with families, particularly working families, and seeing their struggle to gain accessible support. I began developing my own consultancy business that made it easier not harder for families to achieve the type of child rearing they believe is best for their families. This meant creating a service that actually provided real support, such as supporting families in their own homes, utilising technology to assist working families, providing information and tried and tested advice that suits the families ‘way of being’ rather than forced approaches that ultimately fail the family’s needs. So …Lisa Cheal: Early childhood Consultancy was born.

What are about?

you

passionate

After moving here over 8 years ago from Sydney, I have been inspired and motivated by the passion and commitment that those in the northern rivers have; Whether it’s the environment, local produce and the arts to community services.

Did you have any mentors along the way?

Throughout my career I have been inspired by many people in different ways from my long-time friend and early year’s colleague Marina McHutchison to the courageous career of Barbara Holborow, whose conviction to children’s rights empowers me every day.

Your tools and tips for child rearing?

First and foremost …breathe. What can seem like a huge thing in the moment are often insignificant hours later. And remember that raising children is hard work, no one ‘ who matters’ expects you to be perfect and its ok to say…”I don’t know”.

How do I relax?

I love nothing more than being engrossed in a good book…my kindle is my new best friend that and laughing and spending time with my family.

From the moment I walked into my first early childhood class in high school, What is your most treasured working with children has been my possession? Medicare Benefits Schedule greatest passion. Over the yearsChild I haveDental As a really sentimental person I could Bulk for Billed and NSW Health become a strong advocate children's name many Vouchers things, butWelI consider the rights from child protection comed. to quality things have learned from others, the

people I’ve met, their life stories, and the good and bad experiences I’ve had are the most significant possessions I own.

What would your super power be?

I’d love to say the ability to put children to sleep with the blink of an eye but that would leave no time for a bedtime story or two or three. So I’ll have to go with the power of ‘perspective’, as they say everything looks different with a little perspective.

What is your favourite book?

There’s so many from the first book I read as a child ‘Came back to show I could fly’ by Robin Klein (I still have it) to ‘A child called it’ by Dave Pelzer and ‘The Boy who was raised as a dog’ by Dr Bruce Perry.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Working with children has shown me that you’re always accountable to them first and foremost. So being able to say that I remained committed to that belief, even when its cost me greatly, has been my greatest achievement so far.

What is your favourite smell?

That’s is easy but its 3 equally…Old books, new babies and chocolate.

How do you describe your taste and personality?

Hmmm. I would have to say a big kid at heart, down to earth, compassionate, creative and a lover of all things vintage and girly! The

Mother's day special

EMILY'S BIRTHING STORY

W

ith two little ones already at home and plenty of baby preparations still being made I pushed the back pain and cramps to the back of my mind. They had been rolling over me all day, semi-regular but not intense enough to stop what I was doing. By evening I was exhausted but still refusing to believe it was baby time even as the pains intensified.

When we went off to bed I casually mentioned to Tim that I thought the baby might come the next day- I didn’t want to keep him awake or disappoint him if I was wrong so I didn’t mention the pain! Tim fell straight off to sleep and snored through my pains, which intensified quickly until I couldn’t lie down and took to rocking on all fours to manage.

Tim was pretty shocked (and a little bleary eyed!) when I shook him awake after only a couple of hours sleep to rub my back. I still wasn’t feeling 100% sure that this was it - but Tim, ever the practical one, took one look at me and decided it might be a best to call his parents to watch the kids and head into the hospital. We got settled into birthing suite where I decided

ASHLEIGH'S BIRTHING STORY

M

y Birth story started on Friday the 12th of November 2010 at about 10.30pm. Kris and I were just going to bed and I said to him that I had a bit of a pain in my belly. I got up and went to the toilet as it felt like bowel pain.

At 11.30 it became a little stronger and seemed to ease up but returned about 7 minutes later. So I decided to just call the hospital and ask if it was in labour or not as it was quite mild period like pain and being my first experience I wasn’t sure what contractions felt like. They said it perhaps could be and to call my midwife, while I was standing in the kitchen on the phone to the hospital my waters broke and I all of a sudden was certain it was the beginning of labour. I called my midwife, told her and she said just to stay at home and see how I would go for a little while then to call her in a couple of hours or before if I needed anything. I tried to get a little bit of sleep but every 6 min Kris and I would wake up anyway and I'd have to get out of bed and

stand up and sway through the pain. These contractions lasted 6 min apart for an hour and a half before becoming 4 min apart. I began throwing up with the pain and this continued throughout labour. By this stage I couldn't rest at all, I needed to constantly stand and sway with a heat pack on my back. I had a warm shower for a while just to ease the contraction pain and half an hour passed before the contractions began to be 3 min apart. At this stage I called my midwife again and she told me to go on into the hospital and she would meet me there. This was at about 3.30am. So, we collected what we needed and organised the house a little. I climbed into the back seat of Kris' little Mazda 2 and kneeled facing backwards leaning over the back seat. For me, even being on my

NR FAMILY I’d hold off on using the gas and air for a little bit longer. We’d been blessed with quick and uncomplicated births so far but I remembered that contractions always get worse than you think they will, so I wanted to keep all the pain relief options up my sleeve for later on. I managed to keep more active during this labour than previously, pacing the floor and stamping through contractions. Hot showers and a heat pack helped with the back labour but after about an hour and a half Tim rang the buzzer to get the gas and air set up. Leaning over the bed I only managed to get one mouthful of it before the midwife

asked if I was pushing- in that strange primal mentality you seem to enter during birthing I hadn’t actually realized I was until she mentioned it. She wanted to check that I was fully dilated so Tim helped me onto the bed. No need for an internal though- our daughter was well on her way! Anneliese Esther entered the world only 2 hours after we arrived at the hospital. We were so thankful for a very straight forward birth and have our fingers crossed for a similar experience has we prepare to welcome her younger sibling this May.

"I thought the baby might come the next day"

knees felt restricting, I needed to stand and sway. Lucky for us we live about 10 min from the hospital, thank goodness!! We arrived at the hospital at about 4am. The pain was intense but when asked if I wanted anything for it I stupidly declined. My midwife turned up and I felt a huge wave of relief! She gave me an injection to stop the vomiting as I was throwing up with almost every contraction. I had a shower and continued to just stand and sway and stamp my feet throughout the contractions, I could not sit or lay down at all, not even in between contractions. As you can imagine, standing the entire time was very draining! Eventually I felt the need to sit on the toilet and push.. nothing came out though! The pain was terrible and my midwife asked if I wanted to try the gas, the problem with this was that I had to be on the bed as that's where the gas was located. So I got up on the bed and started sucking on the gas, I had about 5 sucks and got this terrible indescribable wave through my head. At 8am my midwife checked to see how dilated my cervix was, it was 7cm.I thought, great if it’s taken this long to get to 7cm it’s going to be like another 4 hours until I’m at 10cm! Oh how wrong I was. I went back to sitting on the toilet at which point I looked up at my midwife and said ‘The next one is a

caesarean! She grinned and said ‘okay then’. Kris came and sat opposite me on the edge of the bath and all of a sudden I had this almighty urge to push. I let out a massive scream and my midwife then suggested I get up on the bed and kneel against the end. I told her I needed something for the pain but not gas. “I need the pethidine, I want the pethidine!!” I cried. My midwife very calmly said “I think it’s a bit late for that.” And I was so disappointed. I left the bathroom and climbed up on the bed kneeling against the raised end. Well after that there were not too many pushes at all and Eliza arrived. Overall from the time established labour started my labour was about 6 hours and 30 minutes and the pushing/second stage was 33minutes. We were very lucky with my labour, especially being my first. I found that if you just go with what your body wants to do then it makes it easier. If you fight it the pain is worse. That’s how it was for me. I used a lot of skills from the book ‘Birth Skills’ written by Juju Sundin and Sarah Murdoch. I highly recommend that book!

SCHOOL NEWS ALSTONVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Teachers Mrs Jude and Mrs Condren have both recently had their babies. Mrs Jude a boy – Jordan, and Mrs Condren a girl – Piper. We wish both teachers and their families well for their maternity leave in 2014. Our congratulations go out to all Alstonville Public School representatives who obtained outstanding results on tueday 4th March 2014 at the zone swimming carnival.

BALLINA PUBLIC SCHOOL

Thanks to the efforts of Mrs Stephanie Whalan, Ballina Shire Council and the school’s eco-warriors, we are now a school that separates its rubbish. Each classroom, learning space and the eating areas now have three bins – one for organic waste (green bin), recyclable products (yellow bin), and other waste (red bin). Already the students are doing really well to stop and think about which bin their rubbish goes into.

BANGALOW PUBLIC SCHOOL

A successful day for our Cricket team triumphing over the Centaur team with nine overs in hand. Thank you to Andre Schoeman and Peter Barton for transporting the team to the game on Tuesday. Thank you to Peter Barton for olunteering to be the coach and umpiring the game and to Amanda van den Berg for the behind the scene organising. More sporting congratulations go to the Girls Relay team who placed first on Wednesday at the Regional Swimming Carnival. They managed to shave 5 seconds of their Zone time. The girls will now travel to Sydney for the State competition in April. Good Luck Freya, Mabel, Paris and Kasey. We’ll be cheering you on from here.

BURRINGBAR PUBLIC SCHOOL

Last week’s disco was a great success. Thankyou to everyone for their participation and for working with our teachers to make it a fun night for everyone.

ROUS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Well done Emma, Edan, Jack, Aaron and Nathan for their efforts at the Regional Swimming Carnival on Wednesday. This was a wonderful opportunity to compete in a carnival against other students from Port Macquarie in the south, to Tweed Heads in the North.

WOODBURN PUBLIC SCHOOL

Both Sam and Charlie Ticknor have continued to show their prowess in the swimming pool, both having qualified to attend the North Coast Swimming Carnival. Chloe Trustum was one of three students who tried out for the Far North Coast basketball teams. Chloe was selected as a member of the girl’s team and will be competing in the coming weeks for selection in the North Coast team.

WYRALLAH ROAD PUBLIC SCHOOL

Our team had a great win to kick off the knock-out competition. Playing Lismore Public, the boys batted first and managed 6 for 87 after our 25 overs. The bowlers did a marvellous job and our fielding was excellent. Lismore could only manage 21 runs for their ten wickets. Two of our bowlers, Lachlan and Brady almost scored the famed hat trick on the day which would have been a bonus.

Top Tips

for

TRAVELLING

WITH KIDS

1.

5.

Book ahead It pays to book ahead, finding accommodation when you arrive can be challenging with children in tow and we all want to avoid hitting the road again with tired and hungry toddlers melting down in the backseat.

Pram it up A pram can be useful on a holiday even if your child is walking, serving as a place for them to rest during day trips. Creates a makeshift bed and something to help carry the bags.

2.

6.

Get the kids involved Let your kids get started on a few holiday related projects before you leave. You could explore maps, read books or explore the history, food, plant and animal life of your destination. They may want to have some input in what activities they may want to do, this is especially good for the older children.

Designate a meeting point In a new place always designate a meeting point I case anyone gets separated from the group. Works to also give older children some space to explore and meet up with you again.

3.

7.

Appy Family There are many toddler friendly apps and games now that we no longer need to cram a toy box into hand luggage when travelling by plane. Its compact and its entertainment.

Be prepared for the climate It’s simple but dress children comfortably for the weather, they will be happier

4. 8.

Drink Dehydration can cause many upsets from constipation to crankiness. Keep water on hand and drink regularly particularly kids as they only usually drink when thirsty. You should drink more in warmer climates.

16

Family Games In case of delay have some family games ready to go, we always have the oldies but goodies like I – spy, punch buggy and alphabet game to fall back on.

9.

Avoid sweets Resist the temptation to give them sweets, pack a mixture of savoury snacks like cheese cubes, fruit and sandwiches – anything to avoid the sugar rush.

10.

Journals Encourage them to keep a journal along the way, take photos drawings and pick up trinkets like postcards, maps and brochures.

11.

Rear view mirrors Extra rear view mirrors faced on the backseats will allow you to keep an eye on the children without having to turn around particularly useful if travelling without another adult.

12.

Time out If you’re travelling with more than one adult, try splitting up from time to time, either having time with the children or heading off for time on your own.

Financial Literacy

T

A 21ST CENTURY SURVIVAL SKILL

by Kirsty Barnett

oday, financial literacy is a vital survival skill. Around the world countries both rich and poor are concerned with finding ways to improve the ability of individuals to be financially independent. Everybody needs money but not everyone possesses the ability to make money or is able to adequately manage and multiply money. A survey conducted in 2012* uncovered worrying trends in personal financial management: 19% of people spend more than they earn. 56% of adults do not have emergency savings. 61% were unable to answer three of five basic financial questions. Many could not work out basic percentages. Are we lacking a culture of saving in a modern age dominated by consumerism? Australian census data shows that only 2.5% of the population saved in 2013. Households with more than one income were found to hold credit card debt on average totalling $16,000. Young people are increasingly exposed to the risk of getting into debt. Credit cards are common amoung university students and after graduating it isn’t uncommon to have debts of up to $50,000 with no immediate employment. The risk of leaving university with an already soiled credit rating is very real. A lack of financial literacy as a young adult leads them unaware that credit records are checked at interviews, when seeking a phone plan or when renting an apartment. Making sensible education and career decisions as well as good money management from the get go can make a huge difference to later financial independence. In a reality of easy application predatory loans, increasing cost of living and employment uncertainty being financially literate is no longer an option it is a critical skill for a better chance in life.

So what is financial literacy?

The Australian National Financial Literacy Strategy defines it as: Financial literacy is a combination of financial awareness, knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to

make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve individual financial wellbeing. A financially literate individual only borrows money if it will make them money long term. They understand the difference between working for money and getting money to work for you. A financially literate person recognises opportunities as they appear. The ultimate goal of all financially literate people is financial freedom. This occurs when the cost of your lifestyle is less than your ‘passive’ income, or the money earned by assets. We can teach our kids to be financially literate from a young age by modelling sound financial decisions,

teaching them to save early and save often, and ensuring that they have the skills required to evaluate financial opportunities, making interest work for them.

What is Australia doing about it?

In America financial literacy is a mandatory course in most state high schools and universities. Consumer Arithmetic and Financial Mathematics constitute only a small section of the new Mathematics and HSIE syllabus. The Australian Securities Commission (ASIC) host the Money Smart website. Money Smart has made a free app called Track My Spend. This tool allows you to easily keep track of where you spend your money. During Money Smart Week (first week of September) ASIC runs competitions for schools and

provides free promotional material. The Commonwealth Bank still organises school banking (who else remembers having a Dollarmite account?) and have recently launched StartSmart, an online financial education resource. In Queensland the Financial Basics Foundation has an online interactive game for young people. These resources while occasionally utilised at school can also be used at home to extend your families financial literacy.

Future Solutions...

Educating our children about money in Australia is still largely the responsibility of the parents. How does a parent best model Financial Literacy? Ask yourself these questions to assess your starting point: Do you tell your money where to go or do you ask where it went? Do you have passive income streams? Do you use a budget? Do you encourage your child to count money and check change? Imagine what your child sees at the supermarket. We go in, load up the cart with food, hand over a plastic card at the checkout and often get given money back. Living in a cashless society has its advantages; but for children it’s hard to visualise the meaning of money when it seems to be free! Engaging children with traditional money based games is more important now than ever before (Monopoly anyone?). Imagine adding up all the money it costs to raise your child in a year and creating a budget that your child then manages, recording the transactions as they occur. Paying your child pocket money is also an opportunity to educate them about managing money. My daughter is 8 years old and so I give her $8 a week of which she can spend a third, save a third and share a third. Arguably this will be so much easier when she turns nine!

Laundry Room Organisation Don’t have a lot of space in your laundry, or want things to be easier to grab when you need them? Why not use an organisation system that hangs over the door? It looks great, tucks away when you close the door and everything is right where you need it. The great thing is that no-touch items for the littlies can be put higher up out of their reach.

3 BEST NATURAL HOUSEHOLD CLEARNERS

Tackle countless chores using the 3 Best Natural household cleaners found from everyday cupboards that save you money and avoid those nasty toxins found in many store-bought cleaners. Vinegar actually cleans much like an all-purpose cleaner. All you need is to mix a solution of equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home. White Vinegar cuts grease, removes mildew, odours, some stains and wax build-up. Lemon juice is another natural substance that can be used to clean your home. Lemon juice can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Try mixing lemon juice with vinegar or baking soda to make cleaning pastes. Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the cut section of the lemon. Use the lemon to scrub dishes, surfaces, and stains. Be aware that lemon juice can act as a natural bleach. Lemon is one of the strongest food-acids, effective against most household bacteria. Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces in much the same way as commercial non-abrasive cleansers. Baking soda is great as a deodorizer. Place a box in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb odors.

Flower Pot Mother’s Day Card What you need: 1 x piece of box cardboard (20cm x 40cm approx) small pieces of coloured craft paper marker pen glue scissors EXAMPLE TEMPLATE

Glue the long edges of the flowerpot together- but leave the top open to create a pocket for the flowers! Get creative and cut out flower and leaf shapes in different colours. Attach them to the top of a rectangular piece of card cut to fit in the ‘pocket’ created at the top of your flower pot. Write your Mothers’ Day Message on the rectangular card below your flowers and push your flowery message into the flowerpot! Mum can ‘pick’ the message out when she receives your homemade card! 22

Kids will be delighted with it's gorgeous, sparkly cover and are invited to imagine themselves in the jungle, under the sea, in the arctic and more.
