Spanish I
Spanish I students will begin to communicate in Spanish and be introduced to many cultural elements of the Spanishspeaking world. We will learn through traditional strategies such as vocabulary memorization and verb conjugation, but students will also be challenged to grow in their listening and observation skills in order to discover the meaning of the Spanish being presented. We will use many methods that mimic first language acquisition: songs, stories, games, skits, and lots of repetition! In order to gain an appreciation of our cultural similarities and differences, we will also experience authentic Hispanic music, dance, history, literature, celebrations, and cuisine.
Prerequisite
No prior Spanish instruction necessary
Special Purchases
• 3-ring binder with notebook paper!
• basic art supplies (crayons or colored pencils, scissors, glue stick, small pack of construction paper)
• dry erase markers
• highlighters, pencils, green pen for correcting work
• ingredients to prepare a dish from a Spanish-speaking country during 2nd semester
Homework Estimate
30 minutes of written homework; additional vocabulary study time as necessary for individual student success
Since language is cumulative, reviewing past topics is essential to be successful.

Perseverance in “leaning in” to the instruction will be critical for the student to make gains in understanding of the language, which in turn will give them success as their Spanish study continues and they are called upon to produce more and more complex thoughts on their own both orally and in written format.
