Windows XP – End of Support

O

ver the past few weeks, we have received numerous calls from worried customers about the same issue – namely the fact that Microsoft has announced that they will no longer be supporting Windows XP from April 2014. So we thought that we would take this opportunity to hopefully put your minds at rest and to provide you with the facts about what is actually means for you.

The first thing to say is - Do Not Panic! This does NOT mean that your computer will suddenly stop working. In fact most people probably won’t notice any difference at all.

into buying computers that they may not need. Again, we can advise you, free of charge, of the options available to you and then leave you to make your decision in your own time.

What it does mean is that Microsoft will not provide any more support for XP – so there will be no more updates when you shut your computer down. It is quite likely that you will not be affected by this, but in the worst case scenario there might be a security issue if someone exploits this.

So whether you want to install an upgrade, set up a new computer, transfer your documents and photographs from your old computer, or if you just want some friendly advice, Calica Computer Solutions can help you.

You may consider using this as a reason to upgrade your computer – for example, a software upgrade from XP to Windows 7 or 8, provided your computer has the capabilities to run this software. We can check your existing hardware, free of charge, and let you know if this is an option. Some people are using this as an opportunity to purchase a new desktop or laptop (supplied with Windows 8). It may be time to consider this option if your computer is particularly slow! But don’t feel pressured into this option - we have heard of some companies using scare-mongering tactics, pushing customers

secures Law Society’s quality mark

iamonds Solicitors in Stokesby has secured membership to the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme - the mark of excellence for the home buying process.

The firm underwent rigorous assessment by the Law Society in order to secure CQS status, which marks the firm out as meeting high standards in the residential conveyancing process. The scheme requires practices to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self reporting, random audits and annual reviews in order to maintain CQS status. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the

Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers. Law Society President Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said that the Law Society introduced CQS to promote high standards in the home buying process. “CQS has established itself as the quality mark of the home-buying sector and enables consumers to identify practices that provide a quality residential conveyancing service. With so many different conveyancing service providers out there CQS helps home-

buyers and sellers seek out those that can provide a safe and efficient level of service.” Lesley Diamond, Director says: “We are delighted to have secured CQS status. Buying and selling a home can be a stressful time. By choosing a CQS firm like Diamonds the public can seek out a firm that has proved its commitment to quality. Our clients will receive a reliable, efficient service as recognised by the CQS standard.”

uring our March meeting , Martham Ladies enjoyed hearing from Mrs Wendy Reader who spoke about Personal Safety and Ms Yvette Shreeve speaking about Victim Support.

We were informed that one in three people are affected by crime in their lifetime. Recently there have been handbag thefts in Great Yarmouth and Wendy gave the group an exercise questioning what was really important to carry in their handbags and what was unnecessary. Wendy also brought to the group’s attention a scam that was currently taking place which involved telephone calls telling people that they were the police and their credit/debit cards had been used so they needed to go directly to their bank and withdraw all their money. The caller, pretending to be a police officer, offered to meet with them and help them. The victim was then robbed of their money. However in one recent incident, the police were informed and the culprit was apprehended, but even so we should all remain alert and vigilant.

Victim Support supporting and advising victims of domestic violence (including teenagers) and crime. They received 13,500 calls for support in 2013 and 35% of these calls were supported through Witness Services. They support victims pre-trial and offer free confidential advice, as well as support with respect to the Coroners’ Court. Yvette manages volunteers covering the area from Great Yarmouth to Blakeney. Although established in 1974, the organisation only became a national charity in 2008. They heavily rely on volunteers and have an intensive 5-day training. As a voluntary group, the organisation is always seeking funding. Their offices are open in Market Row, Great Yarmouth from 10.00am-12.00noon on Wednesdays and 12.00-2.00pm on Fridays. Martham Ladies have lots of exciting events lined up, including a talk on Road Safety, visit to Potters Resort in Hopton, a Mystery Tour and we will enjoy a back stage visit to Gorleston Pavilion. Places are limited, so it is important that names are registered by those interested in attending. For details of Martham Ladies, see page 48.

Dementia

D

id you know that the week beginning the 18th of May is Dementia Awareness week. I know there are those of you under the age of 60, who will think that this article is not for you, and I hope you are right but, please take a moment to think about the older members of your family, to parents and grandparents who may have some of the symptoms of dementia.

So what is dementia?

Dementia is a group of related symptoms associated with an ongoing decline of the brain and its ability to function normally, symptoms such as:  Memory loss, for example forgetting the way home, or being unable to remember names and places, however people with dementia can remember what happened 20 years ago.  Thinking speed, the ability to put into words what you are thinking usually accompanied with difficulty in talking, reading and writing.  Understanding and judgment especially when the emotional part of the brain is affected by the disease. People begin to retreat within themselves, they feel frustrated and frightened about the changes that are happening to them and can often have mood swings.

To reduce your risk of developing dementia it is recommended that you:  Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight by exercising regularly  Do not drink too much alcohol and stop smoking  Keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. So if you have any concerns about a family member or friend don’t wait for someone else to notice and care talk to your GP. For further information on dementia and how to look out for the symptoms I have listed important website addresses on my website at www.inspired-therapies.co.uk.

Eleanor Porter

01493 805046

So how does dementia occur?

It is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Vascular problems. In Alzheimer’s the structure of the brain is changed resulting in a shortage of the chemicals required to send and receive messages thus affecting short term memory, intellectual behavior and thoughts. Vascular Dementia is commonly caused by a series of small strokes that damage the brain tissue. Diagnosing dementia is often an emotive issue as, it will be you the family who notice changes in your loved ones. The fact that it could be “old age” could be true in many of our relatives but be aware of social, behavioral and memory changes and you could be the first to give your loved ones the help and understanding they need. Unfortunately dementia cannot be cured and it is a progressive disease that will worsen over time but, an early diagnosis can help a sufferer and their family get the right treatment and support and many people are able to lead an active and fulfilled life.

Spring Clean your outside space

S

pring is here and the first beams of sunshine are making their way onto our pathways and gardens. Thank goodness! Although we all love a bit of sunshine it can, however, make our patios, driveways and decking look ever so slightly worn and grubby, especially after the winter we’ve just had! Fences are full of moss, pathways can look a little bedraggled and, let’s face it, everyone’s patio looks the same after a long cold wet winter. Not to mention the leaves having blown into the guttering, and the conservatory having taken the brunt of the weather. They’re all big jobs, if you don’t have the right equipment, and can take a bit of the joy of getting out in your garden away from you.

Luckily Odd Bods have come to the rescue, introducing a new pressure washing service to their many other exterior cleaning services. Using a professional high powered pressure washer we can ensure your decking and patios are left gleaming, ready for those lovely warm sunny afternoons. Our pressure washing service is just perfect for cleaning your patio, driveway, decking, fencing or conservatory, and getting rid of all that winter dirt and grime. When it comes to reviving your brickwork, concrete and tarmac, there’s nothing better than a blast of our high tech pressure washer, 36 34

and we can even re sand or re seal afterwards for you if required.

as we have all of the latest technology to make your spring clean a really effective one.

Of course, Odd Bods can certainly ensure that your conservatory roofs and fascias look like new too. With years of experience in cleaning windows, solar panels, and gutters to name a few jobs, no job is too big (or small for that matter)! Our outside Plant Sales Area is well-stocked with ornamental Shrubs, Roses, Trees, Alpines, Perennials and Climbers, and we have lots of ideas for planting in containers with the “It Starts with a Pot” campaign. And don’t forget to “Grow Your Own 5-A-Day” from our selection of vegetables, fruit trees and bushes and Strawberry plants. With Father’s Day coming up, we have some great gift ideas for the home or more practical presents for the garden. Why not treat him to one of our wonderful hand-chainsaw carved bears or sheep? The Summer Menu is now available in the Greenhouse Coffee Shop with lots of seasonal specialities. Come and enjoy morning coffee, afternoon tea, or a delicious meal at lunchtime. YOUR NEWS

Norfolk in the First World War N

eil Storey, ever popular speaker and noted local historian, made what has become his annual visit to Martham Local History Group at a full Martham Village Hall early in March. With the aid of a remarkable set of photographs he gave us his typically personalised view of the first few months of The Great War as it impacted on the people of Norfolk.

In many ways it was a time of euphoria and great expectations as crowds lined the streets to cheer columns of new recruits marching through our towns and villages. We saw office workers parading in their working clothes gradually morphing into soldiers as uniforms and equipment dribbled through. Horsemounted cavalry and horsedrawn gun carriages, together with bicycle-mounted infantry, pointed to how unprepared we were for modern warfare. Norfolk troops, led by The

Norfolk Regiment, played a major role in various fields as the war developed, losing men at a rather more than average rate. We will hear more of how the war proceeded and how it impacted on women and the home front later when Neil returns during the four year memorial of that fateful time.

that the first enemy item to hit the soil of England from the air was actually the metal case of a flare thrown from a German Zeppelin to light its bombing raid route. Where did it land? In Martham, of course!

To close, as ever, we learned something new. Most of us were aware of Great Yarmouth’s experience as the first part of the UK to be bombed and to suffer death through attacks from the air. But we learned

Congratulations to Ms Seeger from Potter Heigham for winning Martham DIY’s prize of a Stanley toolbox and tools.

New at Fairhaven Garden – Access for All Afloat

F

airhaven Woodland and Water Garden at South Walsham is now offering boat trips for visitors in wheelchairs. The Fairhaven Garden Trust has purchased a wheelchair accessible boat for £20,000, supported by a £2,000 grant from Geoffrey Watling Charity. The boated named Primula, after the garden’s famous candelabra primulas, can take up to 12 passengers and will run alongside existing boat Primrose. Twenty-minute boat trips run daily to the end of October on Fairhaven’s private broad and South Walsham Outer Broad. Fifty-minute excursions are also offered every day at 12noon and 2.30pm down the river to St. Benet’s Abbey. Visitors can see local wildlife including kingfishers, grebes and swans and possibly an otter and find out about the history of the local area. Short boat trips cost £3.75 adult and £2.75 child and St Benet’s Abbey is adult £6.75 and child £4.75.

Barbara Greasely, Chairman Broads Tourism and Director Norfolk Boads Direct said: “Almost two years ago I had a fall and badly broke my leg. This resulted in me being in a wheelchair for a short time. It wasn’t until that point that I realised how vulnerable and left out people in wheelchairs can feel. It really is true that people tend to speak to the person pushing you.” “My first outing after coming out of hospital was to Fairhaven. My husband pushed me around the accessible paths, but I would have loved a boat trip out on the broad. I am really delighted that Fairhaven now has a passenger boat suitable for wheelchair users. This really is a great asset to the Broads tourism.” There is wheelchair access throughout the garden, including a Sensory Garden and boat trips (additional charge). Visitors requiring special facilities are advised to telephone in advance, mobility scooters available.

Generally, we hold a volunteer day on the first Sunday of the month from March to October. Refreshments are provided and a list of jobs are put on display, for you to choose from. The next two dates are Sunday 5th May and Sunday 22nd June.

see advert on page 46

We also hold a weekend event for volunteers. 'Erect a windpump weekend' is now in its seventh year and each year, it is very well attended. We supply refreshments and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There is something for everyone - timber work, metal work, greasing, gardening, sail making, painting and much more. This year it takes place on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.
