Taylor, Thompson & Hausman, LLC was created when three established certified public accountants came together to form one new accounting firm. Helen Taylor opened her professional practice in 1984. Judith Hausman started a private tax and accounting practice in 1986. In October of 2010, the two firms merged and Ronilu Thompson, CPA, joined as a principal with 24 years of experience in public accounting with firms in St. Joseph and Kansas City. This merger has brought together a
combination of more than 75 years of public accounting knowledge and professionalism. They offer a complete range of services to individuals, farmers and small businesses. The services include accounting, tax, financial planning, technology consulting and payroll. Our greatest strength and hallmark are the long-term relationships we build with our clients.
Tron’s Goshen Auto Service has been in business since 2003. Tron, originally from northwest Iowa, has been working on cars since he was 14 and professionally since 1982. He came to St. Joseph in 1983, working for GM dealers until 1997. He then was part of a couple of business partnerships. Tron has a great reputation for honesty, integrity and quality. He saw a need for a business with radical integrity that would really stand behind its work. Tron’s is a one-stop-shop for all needs bumper to bumper, from oil
changes to major repairs/replacements, for all makes and models. His technicians are ASE-Certified and take great pride in their work. They stand behind everything the business puts its hands on. Tron says, “We all work together as a great team! Praise the Lord! Don’t believe us just on what we say.” As Tron puts it, “See for yourself, and ask around. We stand by what we do.” “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

The governing body is the City Council, which is comprised of eight council members and the mayor. Each council member operates on a nonpartisan basis for a four-year term. In 1989, the city charter was amended by vote of the people to divide the city into five districts. Each district elects a council representative. Three council members serve as representatives at-large. As chief policymakers for the city of St. Joseph, the council considers resolutions and ordinances and
makes appointments to advisory boards from the citizenry. The council also hires and commissions the city manager and city clerk. The city manager is the chief administrative officer for the city. In this role he is directly responsible for the daily operation and administration of the organization. The city manager hires department directors and employees to assist the directors in their individual areas. The annual budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, totaled approximately $148 million, including $92 million for basic ongoing city services and $56 million for major, one-time capital improvement projects. The largest expenditures go to public works, parks and recreation and the general fund, which includes public safety. Thirty-seven percent of all fiscal year 2010-2011 revenues are expected to come from collected sales tax, property taxes and utility franchise taxes.

We know the consequences of overpopulation and abandonment that result from neglecting to spay and neuter pets. We train our pets by humane methods. We have leash laws instead of letting them run free. Older pets have so many options to make them more comfortable. There are service
dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs and cats that comfort the dying. For every advance in how we care for pets, it seems they repay us a hundred times over. The bonds that exist between humans and pets are powerful and continue to thrive. No matter what happens in the world, pets provide a deep friendship that touches us unlike any other. What does it take to adopt a pet from the St. Joseph Animal Shelter? Food, shelter, play time, veterinary care and your companionship is all that is needed to make both of you content. Many pets have the basics but lack for human companionship, and then the pet acts out due to boredom and loneliness. If you can provide all of those things, seek out your local shelter or check the websites petforu.com and petfinder.com.

2010 was a year of growth and outreach for Grace Evangelical Church. The church completed a major building expansion and renovation project in 2009. The focus for Grace Evangelical Church has been to involve its congregation in volunteering with various service projects and organizations in the St. Joseph community. Each month, the church’s Social Concerns Committee picks a service project and a local organization to work with and then re-
cruits volunteers from the church to become involved in the project. On another level, Sunday school classes and care groups select their own outreach projects and organizations to minister alongside. Grace Evangelical Church holds two morning worship services each Sunday at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m., with Sunday school classes offered between 9:45 and 10:45 a.m. An evening worship service is held at 6:30 p.m. Nursery care is provided at all services, and Children’s Church is offered through fourth grade. Informal small group studies for all ages are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The church also has a radio ministry program, “Grace for Today,” which can be heard Sundays at 8:30 a.m. on KJO 105.5 FM and again at 9 a.m. on KGNM 1270 AM or 102.5 FM. Information can also be accessed on the church’s website at www.graceontheweb.org.

Dr. Fred Potts, IV, MD, LLC has partnered with United Allergy labs to offer custom allergy solutions. We offer precision allergy testing and customized medications (immunotherapy) that can help you say goodbye to those allergies. Our medications are custom-formulated and can help desensitize you to many of the pollens, molds and other triggers that cause your symptoms. This pain-free process begins with a skin test in our office. A tiny
comb gently scratches the skin surface. Test results are available within 15 minutes. Adults and children older than 2 are eligible for the testing. After an initial training period of three visits, you can actually give yourself the therapy in the convenience of your home. Most insurance plans cover the allergy testing and immunotherapy. of the United States to businesses — manufacturing and service, small and large — and to education, health care and nonprofit organizations that are judged to be outstanding in seven areas. Also in 2009, Heartland Health was the recipient of the prestigious 2009 Foster G. McGraw Prize for Excellence in Community Service, one of the most esteemed community service honors in health care. Each year, this prize is presented to a healthcare organization that provides innovative programs that significantly improve the health and wellbeing of its community. The Foster G. Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung airways characterized by shortness of breath and wheezing. Annually, the disease accounts for 15 million physician visits, 479,000 hospitalizations, 1.2 million emergency visits and 10 million missed school days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of asthma deaths has progressively increased since 1982, from 3,000 to 5,000 per year, with mortality significantly higher in African-Americans. In 1992, the
asthma death rate was five times greater among African-Americans than among Caucasians. Referral of asthma patients to an allergist achieves better outcomes of care and cost savings. Studies of care by allergists have documented fewer hospitalizations, shorter hospital stays, fewer emergency room visits and fewer sick care visits, in addition to less work time lost, increased worker productivity and greater patient satisfaction. The economic impact of this chronic disease can be measured in direct costs, such as hospital care, physicians’ services and medications, estimated at $3.6 billion per year. Asthma also has indirect costs of $2.6 billion per year for lost workdays for adults suffering from asthma or caring for children with asthma and lost future earnings from premature deaths associated with asthma.

“Wow, what a year it has been at Water Doctor, says owner and water specialist Larry Cunning. “We have seen phenomenal growth in business, even with all of the negative news around the country. When Ivan and Velma Cunning started their own water conditioning company in 1966, they had already been users of soft water to aid in the skin care of their seven daughters and three sons. The soft water also created a savings on laundry soap, and with that many children, that savings was significant to Velma. Ivan was determined to run his new business with the same vigor and energy he had while growing up on farms in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. He knew the one
thing he could offer was fair and honest prices and durable equipment. Today, the third generation of Cunnings is proud to run the oldest continuously family-run water-treatment dealer in Northwest Missouri. “Today, Water Doctor is poised to continue to provide the very best in water conditioning for another 45 years, Mr. Cunning says. Water Doctor offers a full line of Water Treatment Systems from water conditioning to the Pure Water Systems that produce fresh, clean, clear drinking water without the need of a bottle. They offer lease/ purchase programs so that any family can enjoy the benefits of soft skin and clean clothes and still save money on soap and plumbing repairs. Larry and his sons are following the same work ethic as his parents. Larry II & Michael have both achieved Level 1 certification, through the Water Quality Association. They plan to achieve the same Level 6 certification as their father and grandfather. They have set the wheels in motion for continued progress to 2066.

We also are supplying ductwork for a national HVAC supplier for resale to their customers. fabrication. By using coils instead of flat sheets of metal, we are able to buy our materials at a better price. We use a Spiromatic Spiral shape pipe fabrication machine and a QSE plasma-cutting machine in addition to our Cybermation plasma-cutting machine to fabricate duct fittings. Prior to the advent of these machines, all ductwork and fittings were laid out and cut by hand. Our craftsman can fabricate and install galvanized, aluminum and stainless-steel ductwork in a wide range of commercial, pharmaceutical and industrial applications, including fabrication and installation of commercial and institutional kitchen exhaust systems. They also fabricate custom items such as service platforms to fit your equipment, stainlesssteel countertops, carts, hoppers, machine guards and almost anything else you can come up with.

In 2010, the Andrew County Museum was awarded a Governor’s Humanities Award for exemplary community achievement for its 4,000 sq. ft. exhibit “A Rural Way of Life.” The exhibit explores the history of life “On the Farm” and “In Town” from the 1840s into the
21st century. The exhibit certainly represents a community achievement. Andrew County residents contributed to a capital campaign to essentially remake their museum. In addition, they donated many of the images and artifacts that illustrate the history of Northwest Missouri for a period of more than 160 years. Museum goers visit a general store, enjoy a selection from a silent movie, learn about the evolution of farm technology and see how work in the kitchen was transformed by the availability of electricity. For a list of public and school programs offered by the museum, visit www.andrewcountymuseum.org.

River Cities Community Credit Union was established in 1958 as McCormick Midwest Employees Credit Union for employees of Midwest Solvents and McCormick Distilling Company. Today they are two of the nine sponsor employee groups that are a part of RCCCU. Membership is offered to anyone who lives, works, worships or is a member of an organization in the counties of Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Jefferson and Leavenworth. Once established, membership continues even though that credit union member would not be eligible for new membership. RCCCU in Atchison, Kan., vests its interest in improving the financial interest and wellbeing of our members not only in the present but in the future. RCCCU strives to provide the best service and financial security while also providing a stable and consistent financial performance.
In 2010, RCCCU was awarded the “StandOut CU of the Year” and our manager was awarded “Employee of the Year” by the NE Chapter of the Kansas Credit Union Association. We offer several different products and services, including savings, low-cost loans, payroll deductions, loan protection insurance, notary service and discounted tickets for amusement parks. Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are owned and run by their members. Your savings will grow faster and loan rates are usually more reasonable. Members are what make us special.
