2014 Walt Disney Imagineering Imaginations design competition I Semifinalist Instructor: Prof. Brian Lonsway. In collaboration with: Roy Moriel
The proposal: Rio de Janeiro has always been a major tourist destination, but now, as it will host the World Cup in the summer of 2014, and the Olympic Games in August 2016, Rio has been put in the world’s spotlight. The colorful and vivid city with its dense urban environment is located along the world’s most beautiful beaches and consists with unique mountains. One of the most popular tourist attractions is the cable car ride from Morro da Urca to Sugarloaf Mountain, located on a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. At the peak, a 396 meter elevation reveals an astonishing view of Rio and its surrounding landscape. The Incredibles Adventure at Sugarloaf Mountain takes advantage of Rio’s current theme that focuses on incredible athletes, and introduces a temporary Disney attraction, using the infrastructure of the cable car from Morro da Urca to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. The attraction will operate from June 2014 to September 2016, when all eyes of the world focus on Rio. As the city is known for its outstanding nightlife, and since the cable car ride stops operating at nine pm, the attraction puts its superhero mask on the cable car as darkness sets, and becomes The Incredibles Adventure, allowing the guests to experience the colorful lighted city from one of its highest points. In the attraction the guests become superheroes and with The Incredibles save Rio from the Underminer. Through the attraction the guests enjoy an interactive experience while observing the beautiful view, and engage in creating a fantastic lightshow that is projected on the mountain and can be seen from the city; thus, putting Disney on the spotlight of the world’s most popular city, Rio de Janeiro.
The project was conceived by the Syracuse University Team and created for the 2014 Walt Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Design Competition. This project is the sole property of Walt Disney Imagineering and all rights to use these ideas are exclusive to Walt Disney Imagineering The competition is a way for students and recent graduates to showcase their talents and for Walt Disney Imagineering to identify new talent.
