Application Streaming Most of us are familiar with many applications and some thought provoking ideas are as follows:   Is it possible to use/deploy the application without installation? Example: Using the GroupWise, MS Office suite without installation.   Is it possible to run multiple versions of same applications? Example: IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9 & IE10 – Usage of any combination in parallel at a time.   Is it possible to stream the application from the Web server? Example: Like videos from YouTube, can we download the application components on need basis?   Is it possible to use the application without connecting to a Web server? Assumption: Application is available in a Web server. Application streaming is the ultimate solution for all these ideas.

What is Application Streaming? “Streaming” is a generic term. It basically means that the data being transferred can be used immediately, without having to download the “thing” in it’s entirety before it can be used. Application streaming is a form of on-demand software distribution and it is a type of Application Virtualization. Application Streaming is an alternative to installing an application in the local system. Instead of installing

the application, the application is streamed from the central server. It downloads/streams the application components as and when it is required.

Why Application Streaming? Organizations are spending more time and money for day to day operations in installing , deploying, and configuring the many physical applications. Application streaming provides many benefits compared to physical applications. Some of the benefits are as follows:   Reduces the installation, deployment, and support cost for the applications as the applications are streamed directly from the central server when required.   Reduces the application maintenance cost and time.   Better utilization of available (hardware) resources.   The cost of software licenses and license administration can be reduced.

Features of Application Streaming   Does not require installation of the application before use. It saves the installation and deployment time.   Application maintains its own file systems; Application files, registry entries, and data. Everything is separated from physical file systems.
