Schools for the Future Update Welcome to Nottingham’s Local Education Partnership (LEP) newsletter.

Awards success Nottingham’s award-winning LEP is delighted to be shortlisted for two new awards in the Private Public Finance (PPF) Awards 2010. Some of the most respected and experienced professionals from the public and private sectors have selected Nottingham’s BSF programme to compete in two categories.

• ‘Best Education Project’ award - a category which acknowledges big programmes in the education sector.

• ‘Best Local Government Project Team’ award – specifically for Local Government project teams that have provided clear project

leadership, leading to innovative deal structures and timely, efficient delivery of projects in 2009.

Being shortlisted for these awards demonstrates the work being delivered across a range of partners who remain committed to delivering excellence in Nottingham. Winners will be announced on 13 May 2010.

Did you know?

Nottingham’s Local Education Partnership (LEP) has already scooped the national award for excellence by winning ‘LEP of the Year’ at the annual ‘Excellence in BSF’ awards last year.

Building Schools for the Future Wave 2 Rosehill School Financial Close has been reached to transform Rosehill School into a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for the education of children with autism in Nottingham. Contracts worth £8.6 million have been signed and construction work has started. Pupils have been temporarily relocated to the site of the former Shepherd School on Harvey Road in Bilborough. Construction work is due to be completed in April 2011.

Ellis Guilford is in early design and development stage. Construction work is planned to start late 2010/early 2011.

Outline Business Case approved Green light given to deliver final phase of BSF programme.

Partnerships for Schools have approved Nottingham’s Outline Business Case (OBC) for Wave 5 which indicates £89m of new funding for Nottingham City Council to complete the transformation of secondary and special schools in the city.

This new funding will benefit Westbury School; Woodlands School; Trinity Comprehensive; Top Valley Comprehensive; Nottingham Bluecoat and Technology College; Manning Girls’ School; and Fernwood Comprehensive.

Learning Centres for vulnerable children and young people who do not attend school due to sickness, medical reasons, becoming a young mother or because they are permanently excluded from school, will also benefit from the funding.

Top Valley and Trinity Schools An in-depth, facilitated visioning process has commenced at these schools thanks to the £33 million confirmed funding for these two sample schools.

Primary Capital Programme PHASE 1A Greenfields Phase 1 handed over successfully on 19 April.

Construction work has started on Blue Bell Hill School (final school in phase 1a)

PHASE 1B Design is progressing well at Sycamore and St Ann’s Well Primary Schools which are both in Phase 1b of the Primary Capital Programme. The design team is working closely with the schools to understand the key areas for change and how to deliver these within the constraints of budget and the existing structure of the building.

Academy News The new buildings for The Bulwell Academy and Nottingham University Samworth Academy are due to be completed in August 2010. Work on Nottingham Academy is progressing. Construction work has started on both the Ransom Road & Greenwood Road sites. Work is to start on the existing Greenwood Dale school site later in the year.

Schools for the Future Update Primary Exemplar Project Southwark Primary First of its kind - The new multi-million pound school is one of the first primary schools in the country to be rebuilt under the Government’s Primary Capital Programme and is one of only 23 state of the art primary schools to be built in the country following Nottingham City Council’s successful bid to become a Pathfinder Local Authority.

Ministerial Visit - Vernon Coaker, Labour MP for Gedling and Minister of State for Schools and Learners, visited Southwark Primary School. Pupils from the school joined Vernon Coaker on a guided tour of their new school.

Excited pupils and staff have moved into their new £13 million school - Staff and pupils at Southwark Primary School were delighted to start their first day of the new summer term in their brand new £13 million school. Designed with cutting edge technology in the classroom and flexible inspiring learning spaces, the new school not only provides outstanding facilities for pupils and staff, but also is a real asset to the local community. The completion of Southwark Primary School marks an important milestone in Nottingham’s ambitious programme to transform learning in the City and will provide high quality teaching and learning environments for now and for generations to come.

Southwark Primary School in Basford has been transformed into a 630 place primary school with a 90 place nursery on a single site.

Recycling of redundant furniture In agreement with Nottingham City Council, the LEP commissioned ‘Green-Works’, an award winning registered charity, to remove the surplus / old school furniture. This charity prevents additional landfill and provides great value, high quality low cost second hand furniture to business, charities, schools and community groups, while recycling the remainder.

Other Projects Victoria Leisure Centre

Forest Recreation Ground

Nottingham’s LEP is replacing the old centre with a new swimming pool, which will form part of the major redevelopment scheme for Sneinton Square and Eastside area.

The new centre, will provide a modern six-lane family swimming facility with separate children’s pool and fun splash play area, a new café / retail space, gym and health suites. The existing clock tower will be kept but the rest of the buildings will be replaced, creating a vibrant civic presence on Sneinton Market which is set to undergo its own transformation.

Victoria Leisure Centre closed on 1 April 2010 so work can start on developing a new modern facility to open in 2012.

The Forest Project set up to restore the Forest Recreation Ground on Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham to its former glory. With this project heading into its second phase, Nottingham’s LEP is getting involved to deliver non-educational projects in the City which demonstrates the strength of the partnership in delivering capital build programmes.

Schools for the Future Update

A day in the life of Brian Duckworth, LEP non-executive Chairman.

I’ve been the independent Chairman of inspiredspaces Nottingham for just over nine months. So, as I’m fairly new to the role and as I only work for the company for a few days each month, it’s difficult to describe a typical working day for me. Instead, I’ve decided to give you some of my first impressions of the LEP and what we’re doing, why the role interested me and what I’ve been doing to learn more about the business so that I can hopefully “add value” to what we do.

When the job was advertised, it was one of those moments when I knew the role was right for me and I believed I was right for the role! I’ve always tried to take an interest in local affairs and at one stage I was a Director of Nottingham Development Enterprise when we began promoting the development of the City’s tram system. Since that time, my involvement has been minimal; so the LEP role was an opportunity to re-engage.

Perhaps more importantly, what the LEP was doing is something I’ve been passionate about for years – the need to reinvest in the Country’s ageing infrastructure to give us assets fit for purpose in the 21st century, rather than the 19th century. I’ve spent most of my career working for Severn Trent Water and many years arguing with Ministers and Regulators that we weren’t replacing Victorian assets quickly enough. But my messages were never just about the water industry; I’d argued that the same issues affected our roads, railways, hospitals and schools. So when I realised that the LEP was “building schools for the future”, here was a programme I wanted to be part of.

Everything I’ve seen so far about inspiredspaces has impressed me. Its people, its processes and systems and its delivery record are superb. That’s why it was voted Local Education Partnership of the Year at last year’s BSF awards. Some of the highlights for me include: • the integration of the Carillion and the Nottingham City teams;

• the stunning progress on opening new schools and the refurbishment of other schools;

• the commitment to sustainability – many organisations simply pay lip service to the “S word”. With our commitment to local jobs for local people, the sourcing of materials and sub-contractors from NG postcode areas, and some of the environmental schemes in schools, we are really demonstrating our sustainability credentials.

A key part of my role as LEP chairman is to check with all our stakeholders whether we’re delivering against their expectations. I always like to hear what the customers are

saying. So are the executive team in the Council and the Councillors happy with our progress; are the Head Teachers being engaged in the developments; and how can we continue to make improvements?

“On time and on budget” delivery is a phrase used in all business to measure capital project success. It will be our schools delivery programme against which we will continue to be measured, and, of course, delivering those inspired spaces in which this and future generations are to learn.
