from the president... Dear Alumnae and Friends of NDA,

As many of you may know, in January, 2011, Notre Dame Academy was officially designated an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. This prestigious designation has allowed us to offer the IB Diploma program, a challenging academic program available to our juniors and seniors, and it has also encouraged our school community to continue to grow in our awareness of our one world. Several things attracted us to the IB program, in particular the international character of the program. The Sisters of Notre Dame, who founded Notre Dame Academy in 1904, are an international congregation with our roots in Coesfeld, Germany and have now spread to over 17 countries. Also, one of the key values of the IB program is developing in students “international mindedness,” the ability to appreciate our own cultural and personal history as well as the culture and history of others. In addition, it is the ability to think globally about the implications of our decisions and actions, and to be able to problem-solve from a global perspective. In this issue of Women of Vision, we highlight stories of some of our women who are living or serving in countries outside of the United States. Study, work, family or the desire to serve have motivated their travels and they are certainly examples of the “international mindedness” we encourage in our NDA students today. You will also read about students who have joined us this year from China, France and Spain as part of our new international outreach initiative. NDA has partnered with Foreign Links Across the Globe (FLAG) to welcome young women from other countries who desire a Notre Dame Academy education. These young women have helped broaden our understanding of other countries and cultures while becoming immersed in our Notre Dame Academy community.

UP TO THE MINUTE

Wherever you are in this one world, know that you are a valuable member of our Notre Dame Academy family! As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers. In Notre Dame,

ive years ago, Notre Dame Academy studied what it could do to best prepare its students for an increasingly globally interconnected world. The result was that in 2011 NDA became northwest Ohio’s only International Baccalaureate World School. To enhance our global perspective, NDA added a program to welcome international students in 2015. “With the Sisters of Notre Dame in 17 countries on five continents, it made sense for us to adopt an international curriculum piece and expand into welcoming international students,” explained NDA President Sister Mary Ann Culpert. Baccalaureate Program

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program teaches students how to be lifelong learners who think critically about the how’s and why’s of the world from a global perspective. While students in AP courses learn presented material, students in IB courses learn through research, discussion and hands on experiences. A great example would be IB Biology. The student is given the tools for creating a lab, taught how to use the tools, and then learns how to apply the tools by creating their own lab instead of being given one that has predetermined outcomes. This way the student learns from the process first hand allowing for more creativity and lifelong learning. IB Structured for Deeper Learning

The full IB Diploma is comprised of the following areas: Core Subjects, Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay/ Research project and Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS). “We personalize IB for each girl,” said IB Coordinator Angie Joseph. “I work with each student to assist them in finding the best fit for IB courses. We help the students learn how IB can best serve their future college and career goals.” IB Creates Lifelong Learners

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is designed to make IB students lifelong learners. In that course, they learn how we learn and how ways of learning are interconnected. Many times education becomes

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) leads NDA students to take their knowledge into the world to help others. “Through their participation in CAS, our students become more well-rounded individuals by creating and leading activities that both challenge them in their academic subjects and involve creative thinking, physical activity, community participation, leadership, and service,” said Campus Minister Faye Smith. One NDA student, recognizing the need for books to be available for children in local low-income schools, organized a book drive in her neighborhood in which she was able to collect a multitude of books to donate to a local elementary school. Another student saw the need for advocacy for females throughout the world and used her CAS project to lead NDA in participating in International Day of the Girl headed up by the United Nations. NDA’s IB Program is Expanding

Currently, about half of NDA upper level students are in the IB program but the proportion is growing. Notre Dame Academy currently has 66 seniors and 83 juniors in IB, with 92 sophomores ready to rise into the program next fall. The program began with 48 candidates in fall of 2011. “I think what draws students towards IB is the rigor it offers and that it allows them to become more globally minded while teaching them to be independent learners,” said Ms. Joseph. International Students Add Global View

NDA students have an expanded cultural understanding thanks to this year’s eight international students—five from China, one from France, one from Spain, and one from Ghana. Ms. Joseph moderates a weekly international student support group comprised of international and American students. At their meetings, students share their cultural differences and American students help NDA’s international students understand American culture and events at NDA. She also meets weekly with each international student to talk about academics, activities, social situations, and how to adjust to new family and friends. Part of NDA’s Continuous Innovation

According to “Mapping the Nation: Linking Local to Global” published by the Asia Society (www. http://asiasociety.org/mapping-nation), 23 million American jobs are now tied directly to global trade. Though founded over a century ago, NDA prides itself on providing an innovative education that prepares its students for this interconnected world to which they will contribute.

compartmentalized; TOK helps connect all of the courses to show how knowledge is obtained in each area and then how it is connected.

World Language Experimental Sciences Mathematics Computer Science The Arts Individual & Societies

Students earning a full IB diploma choose a class from each subject, work on their research paper, create a CAS project and take TOK which connects all of the classes together for a comprehensive curriculum. This allows students to become holistic with their learning. Students may also be a Course student and take one or up to 5 individual courses.

his fall, NDA was bright with prayer flags designed by World Religions class students. World Religions Instructor Gloria Denos uses stories and prayer practices from religions around the world to have students reflect upon their own faith practices and scripture. “I like to do some assignments in my class that will allow for the girls to connect their lived experiences with the material we are covering in class,” Denos explained. The prayer flags allowed the students to think about their Buddhist meaning, as well as their own Catholic faith or other tradition they embrace.” This spring, Denos will have students create “Gratitude Rocks” in conjunction with their unit on Primal Religions/Aborigines. The Aborigines create “Gratitude Rocks” that they share with people. On the rocks, they use Aboriginal symbols and dot painting to express what they are thankful for.

deal of time discussing and learning about the importance of myth/story in a “Sometimes they share their rocks with someone who has blessed them in some way so I will encourage the girls to share their rocks with a significant person in their life. We also spend a great deal of time discussing and learning about the importance of myth/story in a person’s life, as well as how every religious tradition has a sacred story,” said Denos. To make this personal to their faith life, students use more modern means—iMovies—to create and tell their own life story that reflects upon the role faith takes in their lives. Each girl’s story had to include her early life, including the role of faith in her life, family members’ and friends’ significance, and her dreams for the future.

arch 2016 brought a new experience for three Notre Dame Academy graduates. Michelle Carey ‘07, Lina Elsamaloty ‘10, and Emily Cooper ‘12 embarked on their first medical mission to Honduras. Michelle, a practicing pharmacist at the Jobst Anticoagulation Service, Lina, a second year medical student at the University of Toledo, and Emily, a soon to be first year medical student at the University of Toledo traveled to Honduras with a team of 80 health care professionals to provide much needed health services to the local population. The team, led by Dr. Richard Paat, an internal medicine physician at St. Luke’s hospital, spent several weeks preparing for the trip, which included making travel arrangements, purchasing and sorting medications and supplies needed for care, and learning about commonly encountered diseases. The health care team that traveled to Honduras included 10 physicians, 2 pharmacists, 2 dentists, a nurse practitioner specializing in obstetrical and gynecological care, and several pharmacy, nursing, and medical students from the University of Toledo as well as translators and additional volunteers. With such a large team, they were able to divide the group and service two villages almost every day. The team was able to visit 9 different villages in Honduras in 5 days and help over 3,300 patients while there. The days were often long and tiring, with commutes to the villages that sometimes were near three hours. Students gained valuable practical experience as they were able to administer joint injections, perform physical assessment exams, and use their knowledge of travel medicine to come to a conclusion on diagnosis without modern imaging and testing. The pharmacy was booming all day and common medications dispensed included anti-inflammatory drugs, antacids, and antibiotics. “This was truly a life changing experience because we were able to provide much needed healthcare to those that otherwise would not be able to receive help. I am inspired to continue to help those in need who do not have regular access to health services,” said Michelle Carey.

Emily Cooper ‘12

In addition to providing health services to the citizens of Honduras, the team also supplied families with water filtration systems that can help to eliminate the repeated infections from drinking contaminated water. Finally, the team was able to educate 1-2 people in each village on basic first aid in order to be a point person for the town when regular health care is not available. Of course all the hard work did lend itself to a rest and relaxation day, where the team was able to explore the Mayan Ruins in Copan. 9

Since beginning her studies at Duke University, she has been part of in health research teams in South Africa and Peru. In Peru, Miss Krischak spent eight weeks taking water samples in rural communities to test mercury contamination. Her South African trip was part of an ecology research program which found an easier way of sampling gastropod populations using the number of hermit crabs. While there, she also surveyed the small village of Hamakuya about their water supply contaminated by illegal gold mining, to help authorities develop a better system.

Miss Krischak said her IB studies at Notre Dame were particularly useful to her international research. “IB teaches you how to be open to other cultures. Also, NDA’s rigorous academics helped me have strong enough academics to be selected for the teams.” Now a junior majoring in biochemistry with minors in Spanish and chemistry, Miss Krischak had never left the Midwest prior to attending Duke. As part of her studies, she works in the Glilblastoma Biology Lab testing drugs on cell pathways to search for drugs that are effective against a highly lethal form of brain cancer. After being part of several international health research teams, Miss Krischak has decided she would like to earn an MD PhD in oncology and have a career in international medical research. She intends to focus on oncology and immunology, with a particular focus on vaccines.

In recent years, the Fine Arts Department has begun the tradition of having four year art students create ceiling tiles of replicas of famous artists artwork. Three alums who took both IB Visual Arts and AP Art History created the first three global artwork reproductions: Meghan Miazgowicz ‘14 created the first a detail of the Burning of the Sanjo Palace Scroll (Japanese); Anna Gerhardinger ‘15 created a detail of Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among the Mountain Stream (Chinese) and Meghan Kozal ‘15 created Shirin Neshat’s Speechless (Iranian). All three scored top scores in AP and IB, 5 and 7 respectively. Meghan is a student at BGSU in the school of art and will travel to study this summer in Japan. Anna studies at Kenyon College and took a Chinese Art History Course as a freshman this past fall semester. Meghan is at the University of Notre Dame, majoring in Political Science (International Relations) and minoring in Design Technology. She works for the Snite Art Museum and is taking several artistic courses.

Perhaps as part of a process at your workplace, faith community or charities you are involved with, you have been asked to participate in an exercise of “What if...?” What desperately needed services could our charity or non-profit provide if money were no object? How would our business customers respond if we changed the way we design our product or deliver our services? Maybe you’ve even asked “What if...?” questions about issues critical to us as a world. What if we could find a way to resolve worldwide differences through peaceful processes? What will really happen if we continue to abuse our environment, our common home? In order to better communicate about NDA, I have been considering the “what if” question of “What if there were no Notre Dame Academy?” A stunning question, to be sure! But really....would our local community, indeed our world, be any different if Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, OH did not exist?

In short, my reflections led me to a resounding “Yes!” The educational mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame and Notre Dame Academy is to “educate for transformation.” Notre Dame Academy is about a WHOLISITIC education forming young women who will make a impact in the world now and when they leave NDA. The knowledge, faith development, service and relationships our young women develop go with them, and indeed are transforming our world one woman at a time. In Argentina as a part of an NGO working with women and children; at the Texas/Mexico border providing humanitarian care to immigrants; in California working with persons who are homeless; in hospitals all around our country serving as nurses, physicians, researchers; advocating for the rights of others as attorneys, social workers, counselors; forming young people and adults as educators, ministers, church workers, college professors; making our world a bit more beautiful as graphic artists, architects, musicians, and conservationists; educating and forming children and families as wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and nieces. They bring a unique approach to transformation and service that characterizes a woman educated in the NDA tradition.

Year in Review

This 2014-15 academic year was filled with joy and gratitude as over 640 women continued to grow as women of vision. We were so blessed to start off the year with new windows in the main academic wing. We were also able to begin the year with a beautiful prayer garden in our courtyard due to a generous donation. Mary of the Garden is surrounded by beautiful landscaping, flowers and benches for the girls to use. Our girls love the new prayer garden and it was wonderful to see the seniors and 8th graders celebrating May Crowning with pictures in the prayer garden. As part of the Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association (OCSAA) we started our four year implementation of our Catholic Identity goal and Student Learning goal. Our Catholic Identity goal helps us enhance our prayer and worship services. We have been able to add prayer and worship services to our calendar, incorporated contemporary Catholic music to our prayer services and held a special mass for Respect Life in January. Our students, faculty and staff have all had the opportunity to increase their Faith Sharing experiences. Our OCSAA Student Learning goal calls for our students to increase their critical thinking skills through application of knowledge. Our faculty had the opportunity to hear from area professionals regarding critical thinking. We were so excited to launch our Summer Academy in the summer of 2015. We continue to have sports and discovery camps with the addition of academic offerings in the summer. Our students were very excited to offer their suggestions for the Summer Academy as well as have the option to sign up for some Academy options. As a school we are always reviewing and discerning best practices in the tradition of our Catholic faith and our 100-year tradition of ministering to young women. We were blessed to announce that we have been recognized by the Catholic Education Honor Roll of The Cardinal Newman Society as one of nine schools receiving Honorable Mention and we were the only school in Ohio to receive this recognition. As always we continue to have an award winning Speech Team, a phenomenal musical Oliver, enhanced Career opportunities for our girls to explore their gifts and talents, our annual Christmas in Appalachia trip that has expanded to Appalachia at home at Queen of Apostles and an outstanding Athletic program that can boast that we are the 11X winner of the All Sports Trophy.

Vision for the Future

Fellow NDA Supporters: It is my privilege to write to you as the chair of the Notre Dame Academy Board of Trustees. If I accomplish nothing else with these few words, please know that I and my fellow trustees are very thankful for the trust you place in NDA to educate your daughters and/or be faithful stewards of both the resources you so generously entrust to us and the mission we profess to live out each day. We are also so thankful for the fine faculty and staff who dedicate so much energy and effort to help mold nearly 650 young ladies into Women of Vision! While we celebrate the completion of a three-year project to improve the girls’ learning environment (new windows and climate control system) and continuing academic enhancements (career counseling; IB program in “steady state”), our focus is on the future. Our plans include facility improvements to improve both the girls’ day-to-day experience (renovations to Alumnae Hall) and the overall health and safety of our buildings (roof replacements). Even more importantly, our strategic plan has us focused on more experiential goals that include: • improving critical thinking skills; • increasing the girls’ knowledge of and engagement in prayer and worship; • fortifying “young” programs for voluntary summer enrichment and international students; and • ensuring that each student experiences an inclusive and safe environment. Since 1904, under the guidance of the Sisters of Notre Dame, NDA has been developing and empowering young women by providing an exceptional educational experience permeated with Gospel values. The NDA Board of Trustees works hard to guide the continuous improvement of that experience. We thank you again for joining us in this important quest! Go Eagles!

Notre Dame Academy has a history of sending many smart, capable, ambitious women to the UT College of Engineering. This year, nine women from the NDA graduating class of 2015 are freshmen in the College of Engineering! The six pictured above are all Bioengineering majors- the largest group of freshmen Bioengineering majors from a single school. In BIOE 1000, these students are busy mapping the human circulatory system. Many of them are involved in First Year Rocket Engineers and Freshman Design Club, where they are working on designing and redesigning products to address the needs of the community.

A Culture of Philanthropy

D

ear Alumnae and Friends of NDA,

Does your employer match your giving?

NDA . O R G

NDA has a new easy way to find out and submit it to your employer. https://doublethedonation.com/nda

Successful independent catholic schools are rooted in a culture of philanthropy. Through the generosity of alumnae, parents, and members of our community we are able to provide a unique educational experience for each young woman that walks through our doors. I am proud to have the opportunity to fulfill the role of Vice President of Donor Relations during this exciting time for the school. During a recent trip to Florida this spring to meet with alumnae and friends of Notre Dame Academy, the message that I heard consistently from each of them was how their time at NDA has significantly shaped who they are today. This is why I understand, and believe, that when we continue to empower young women, everyone benefits. Young women that are educated can transform their communities and pass on the benefits to their children, and their children’s children. As you may know, tuition alone does not allow us to deliver the exceptional educational experience we currently provide to over 650 young women. The mission of the Office of Advancement is to assist Notre Dame Academy in securing the additional financial support needed to achieve the overall mission and strategic goals of the school. My sincere appreciation to all of you who already have given your time, treasure, or talents. To those of you that have not given, I extend a warm welcome to join us on this journey to grow, inspire, motivate and inspire young women today and tomorrow. Sincerely,

At this year’s Mad for Plaid, senior Annie Ingham movingly spoke about why she was so grateful for those who financially support NDA
