Notre Dame Girls Dance to the Sounds of Music

‘Excitement’ was the word on January 31. The juniors and seniors both felt it, and they were waiting for something to break the suspense. Finally, Sister Pauline assembled the seniors in the gym. Within minutes, the stage curtain open— ed and two wind-up dolls by the names of Nancy Johnson and Colleen Murphy appeared. Barb Daley wound them up and they spoke, armouncing that the PA had arrived.

At the Birchwood Club the theme of the Sounds of Music was announced through a trip around the world. Lynne Goracke was placed in aFrench cafe with ‘Where Is Your Heart?’. On a carousel was Maryalyce Petsche with ‘If I Loved You’. In Russia, Diane Bonaiuto thrilled to the song, ‘Somewhere My Love’. Diane Bash became a Japanese beauty as she listened to ‘You Are Beautiful’. Finally, back in America, Colleen Witzke heard ‘April Love’. On April 28 one of these girls would be crowned queen!

Those three months sped by quickly, and on that windy April evening nearly two hundred couples came to the Livestock Exchange Build— ing for an eveningof fun and dancing.

Father Schwertly had the honor of being Master of Ceremonies.After his welcome, the grand march was started by the juniors and the seniors followed. Then the moment arrived that all had so eagerly awaited: Diane Bonaiuto was crowned as Notre Dame’s 1967 Prom Queen.
