Prom: A Night to Remember Adam Watkins After endless months of planning, the most important social event of any student’s high school life finally arrived on June 3rd. Graydon’s 2011 Prom: Aurora was a spectacular, emotional evening. As the limos and buses rolled into the front of the beautiful Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex at Exhibition Place downtown, students gathered in

the lobby of the magnificent building. Students were served delicious hors d’oeuvres and took pictures with the professional photographer. The night continued as the 250 guests in the graduating class were seated and dined. Then came the dancing, finishing off with the Vitamin C’s graduation song. The class got into a circle and swayed

as they sang emotionally recalling past memories, perfectly capping off a wonderful night. The Prom Committee sincerely hopes everyone enjoyed the event. Planning Prom was just one of the many unforgettable experiences I’ve had at Graydon. Hopefully, all of the attendees felt that the prom was an unforgettable night as well!

A Message from the Editors The Hawk Talk Editors would like to thank all the students who participated and made this paper possible. It was only through their hard work, dedication and initiative that a paper made by students, for students could be produced. Though the paper is only 5 years old this year, we have come very far. With ideas to expand to the internet, the younger grades have been eager with innovative plans that we are sure will help the paper continue to thrive. We are sure that the ideas and enthusiasm that we have seen for student journalism this year will ensure the continuity for Hawk Talk. We would like to say a special thanks for Ms. Borsten for all her hard-work in keeping the paper alive for all these years. Her dedication to providing an entertaining outlet for students needs to be recognized and without her, nothing would have been possible. Thank you for all the support this year to our readers and developers! Have a fun summer and good luck with exams! -Adam and Dilani

Blood Brother’s Cast Experience Taha Arshad Every year, Theatre Graydon presents us with an amazing musical production that leaves us in awe. This year, I was privileged enough to be a part of Theatre Graydon’s incredible cast, as we performed our rendition of the renowned British musical, “Blood Brothers.” This experience tr uly opened my eyes, and gave me an entirely new understanding of life. Throughout the process of turning our scripts, choreography, and musical scores into an actual show, we were faced with many challenges.

By overcoming these challenges together, our group of thirtytwo students went from being a cast to a close family. This experience changed my life, and it allowed me to unleash my true potential. It left me with a brand new family and unforgettable memories. It was our time bonding as a cast and overcoming our own personal obstacles that led to this year’s show being the great success that it was, and I recommend all returning Graydonites to audition for next year’s musical!

Glory Days, Glory Days Dilani Logan It was a night of happiness and celebration as the Graydon Hawks gathered in the gym afterschool to celebrate their athletic achievements. SAA’s 32nd Glory Days Athletic Banquet was a blur of green and yellow decorations and athletes dressed to impress. Athletes enjoyed the traditional order of awards and were treated to a lovely buffet prepared by Mr. Volpe’s class. Students anxiously awaited to hear their names called out throughout the evening to win one of the many door prizes available. However the real treat of the evening was the array of cakes available to both students and staff as teams competed for the coveted title of Best Team Cake, with this year’s hon-

ours being handed to the Senior Boys Volleyball team. The night was memorably brought to a close with a wonderful slide show looking back on Graydon’s athleticism over the past year. Top honours of the night were awarded to Roselyn So and Daniel Sheikh as Junior Athletes of the Year, and Caeden Chau and Cody Fisher as Senior Athletes of the Year. Vinita Shah, Heather Trace, Jennifer Tran and Michelle Cieslik also won large awards. All in all, the night was exciting and unforgettable. Thank you to Ms. Mackay and the SAA for putting together such a wonderful night and for all the Graydon coaches for their continued support for Graydon’s athletic program.

Science Fair: Spring 2011 Dan Yan Graydon’s second semi-annual science fair took place this year on Thursday, May 10th. All of Graydon’s grade nine and ten students who were currently taking science semester two actively participated and competed in the fair. There were many different types of projects, ranging from photon cannons to testing the reaction of plant growth when exposed to music. The library was packed with project posters, people and their experiments. Judges walked around with their clipboards and papers, inspecting the projects and asking many

questions in an attempt to test the knowledge of the situation. The day was rather interesting, as students were able to wander and see what discoveries their peers had been making for the past few months. The day quickly came to a close by the beginning of fourth period, when those who received awards were called to pick up their certificates of achievement. Gold was awarded to Danny Kim, Andrew Chen and Scott French, who did their project on sound proofing. The silver award was received by Allen Huang and Adam Wong for their project.

cycling vigorously on a stationary cycle for 10 minutes at a time all in the hopes of receiving the highest mileage. The event was action packed as staff from the Inside Ride DJ’d and cheered all the students on. The event was capped off by an awards ceremony with prizes being awarded for most mileage, most team spirit and most fundraising. Winning students received beautiful medals which they displayed proudly. The event concluded with students receiving the option to once again return back to the carnival for the rest of the afternoon. Overall the event was a staggering success raising almost $5,000 and was even featured in the Mississauga News Booster and online. The SAC would like to thank its many members, volunteers, teachers, sponsors and the administration for making such an event possible and hopes all the students who attended enjoyed themselves. For a week filled with rain, Graydon got lucky and received some sun on May 20, as almost 200 students participated in the Student Activity Council’s annual fundraiser to raise money for the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, which seeks to provide support for children who are battling cancer and their parents. This year students paid and received admission into not one but two large events. The buyout which lasted from 11:00am to 4:00pm drew in crowds dressed up in spirit wear and ready to have fun. Students started the morning with an outdoor carnival which featured a bouncy castle, bungee run, dunk tank and inflatable jousting. Students were also provided with a multitude of food to choose from such as subs, cotton candy, popcorn and an array of breads and pastries, generously donated to the school by Cobbs Bread. After having some fun in the sun, students flocked to the gym in their pre-made teams to compete for cycling supremacy in the Inside Ride. Each student was put to the task of

Doomsday or Boomsday? Saman Salman The world was supposed to end in September 1994, January 2000 and most recently, May 21, 2011. How could we believe the 89 year old selfproclaimed prophet, Harold Camping, to forecast when the world will end? Harold Camping is the president and radio host of Family Radio a Christian radio station in California. He claimed he was "99.9% certain", that the world would end in 1994. It didn’t. Just this past month, he predicted the world would end again. If you’re reading this article, then you know that once again the world didn’t end. Do you know what that means? 200 million disappointed people spending millions of dollars on a non-profit organization. No rapture. Yep, I call shenanigans. The reality is that Family Radio raised 18 million dollars in 2009 alone and some of Camping's followers are spending $100,000 on campaigns to make the public aware of this doomsday. This includes advertisements on vans, posters and billboards. Doomsday appears here to be more of a money making venture. With, movies such as 2012, and The Day After Tomorrow to underground shelter homes, it is hard to ignore the financial interests in this whole affair. On the contrary, will there be any explanation that could solace the families whose lives will be ruined only because they believed Camping's predictions? And where was Harold Camping the night of May 21st, when it was just another day and his calculations went wrong again? The news is his curtains in his home were drawn down shut and no one answered the door.

First Year of High School Talal Khan The first year of high school is exciting, a step to a new beginning, the starting of high school and a nerveracking time of one’s life. It’s proud to think you have finally matured and grown out of middle school. But it may seem scary to now attend school with the “big kids.” There’s nothing to stress about, high school is one of the most enjoyable experiences of your life. I’ve come up with a little guide on how to go through the first year of high school in happiness.

In school, you’ll find many different people that are happy to interact with you. Don’t be afraid to start a relationship with people you aren’t familiar with. It’s important to realize everyone is new and everyone is accepted in grade 9. Be involved around the school and many different extracurricular activities. This will aid you in knowing more people whether it’s from chess club or the soccer team. Out of all things, the most influential note that will help you become a great student is being yourself. You can find true First impressions are the most friends just by acting the way you everlasting for both teachers and really are. Try to make your first year, friends. It is always key to be open to the most memorable one. making new friends and accept change.

The End of the World Umar Bhutta In history, there have been many instances where the end of the world was hyped. On January 1, 1000 AD, pilgrims believed the Apocalypse was occurring. In 2000, governments around the world feared that electronic systems would read the digits “00″ as 1900, instead of 2000. On June 6, 2006, the devil was to take over. And were we not supposed to die a few Sundays ago as well? What is special about 2012 then? Firstly, the renowned Mayan calendar ceases at 2012. This may not be arbitrary, however. Every 26000 years, the sun aligns with the centre of the Milky Way. That date is 21/12/2012. On this date also, the magnetic poles of the Earth supposedly might reverse, causing unimaginable damage. Some believe a giant solar flare will incinerate the planet and if that wasn’t enough, super volcanoes will erupt and completely block out the sun. Then again, these are theories – and the world was supposed to end many times. So why should 2012 be any different?
