y s t E n o Alsion Faith Kay Natural Paint Starter Kit Alison Faith Kay is an artist who works with natural materials including earth pigments and hand-made paint. Want to dip your toes (or fingers!) into painting with natural materials? This ready-to-make kit will give you everything you need. You can get started straight away! It includes:  Five non-toxic natural pigments – yellow, blue, red, green and burgundy.  Milk-based, water soluble binder in the form of casein and borax powder.  Full instructions on how to make the binder, prepare the natural pigments and mix the paint.  Tips and tricks for your practice. The kit will make you up to 300ml of natural paint, and the binder will keep for up to 6 weeks. The kit has the smallest environmental footprint I could realistically give it – recycled cardboard boxes, including used cereal boxes I cut up myself and recycled plastic pots. You can recycle or reuse all of it! The kit came out of my own desire to ditch my acrylic paints and make my studio 100% natural – this is the paint I use in my own, colourful art. If you are looking for more in depth information on painting naturally, including the different binders you can use with these pigments, you can check out my book,

Shibori kit with Natural indigo dyeing Indigo dye comes from the leaves of a plant, it is one of the oldest dyes used for dyeing fabrics and made its way to the Greeks and the Romans, where it was valued as a luxury product. Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technic, which produces patterns on fabric. There are an infinite number of ways. One can bind, stitch, fold, twist, or compress cloth for shibori, and each way results in very different patterns. Since high school I dye my clothes, I did fashion studies and now I work for a Belgian fashion brand, I’ve always liked to dye fabric but I got fed up using chemical components, I learned about natural and vegetal dying and fell in love with this way of dying. I remarked that it was not easy to find the right receipt, the right components so I decided to make kits and sell it on Etsy. Soon I will be adding other types of dye on Etsy website, weld, madder etc. I also plan to organize workshops to teach people how to dye with plants. This kit allows you to dye 500 gr of dry fibre in dark shades , and at least 1 kg in lighter shades.

Bindweed Blues

on Etsy

I know how important it is for us all to cut down on waste, even in a small way, so I decided to make some zero waste items out of fabrics I have collected. These leaf patterned grocery bags are made from some linen curtains I bought from the local Mind shop and I thought that they would be perfect for my first batch of drawstring shopping bags. They are all handmade and have French seams for strength, they also have a double drawstring made from unbleached cotton cord. I like to finish off the drawstring pocket with a fold and stitch it so that it will not fray. All the bags are limited edition as the fabric I use is sourced from charity shops. I only ever use natural cottons and linens, which have been washed in non-bio soap and dried on my washing line in the garden…weather permitting! Set comprises of: One large: 30 cm x 46 cm (12’’ x 18’’) ~ will hold 5 kg of potatoes Two medium: 36 cm x 25 cm (14’’ x 10’’) ~ for 2 artisan loaves or 3 kg fruit Two small: 25 cm x 18 cm (10’’ x 7’’) ~ holds 500 g pasta One extra small 19 cm x 14.5 cm (7.5’’ x 5.5’’) ~ holds 300 g coffee beans When filled, they all fit nicely into the matching tote bag available separately. I make different designs every week, so if I have sold out of the design you like…visit my shop regularly and you will find another set you will love. I am happy to do custom orders, so if you have something in mind, just ask!

Festival of Natural Fibres 8th of September 2018 at Crafts Central, London, UK Organised by the Khadi Initiative

Textile and fashion can be a force for good and a vehicle for change. Gandhi’s use of khadi for political and economic organisation in India’s nonviolent freedom movement was a masterstroke. Khadi helped create a new nationalist identity – neither the traditional hierarchical nor a colonial one which was coming into vogue in the early 20th Century. Alas, as we are witnessing today, textile can also be a force for destruction. Statistics presented by Ellen MacArthur Foundation show that If the present trend continues, the textile industry will add 22 million tons of microfibres to the ocean, will have a 26% share of the carbon budget and consume 300 million tons of oil by 2050. Scary! If we act now – this can change – textile can become a force for good. Nature has the answers – we just need to listen to them. An amazing array of fibres and dyes – and ways of using them for fabric in less harmful ways. Good for the environment, great for the global community of artisans and friendly for your skin.

COME AND JOIN US on the 8TH OF SEPTEMBER at an event at Crafts Central, a stunning venue for events and space for crafts studios – facilitated by Freeweaver SAORI Studio and organised by the Khadi Initiative in collaboration with a wide and growing network. An exhibit on the walls, which be a prominent feature of the event will be on display from 5th to 9th September. There will be practical crafts workshops on 9th September. . www.khadi.london/khadi-initiative

The Resurgence of Natural Dyes with Zoë Burt and Lara Mantell NSN Team has lanuched a series of monthly meetups. During our first event we focused on an area that we know well as it has being a reccuring subject in our magazines since the very early stages of the project: natural dyes. During the event Zoë and Lara talked us through their experiences with natural dyes and gave us an interesting insight into what can be achieved with these dyes and how potentially they could revutionalise the fashion industry.

NSN Magazine June Event 2018 Exploring Eco Friendly Product Design On the second of our series of monthly events, we did something a little bit special as we also celebrated the release of the Summer Issue 2018. So, before the event, we held a fabulous ‘Mark making with natural inks and handmade brushes’ workshop with the very talented Ross Belton. During the workshop, Ross demonstrated how to create natural

inks teaching the participants how to make brushes and, after that, they undertook a series of mark making exercises. At 6pm we started the evening talk. We had Paige Perillat-Piratoine who wrote a piece for the Summer Issue 2018 talking about Ecovative, an innovative business to make eco-friendly alternative for packaging by using mycelium. During her talk, she focused on the properties of mycelium as a new material and the projects that she is bringing forward. Our second guest was Ross Belton who as well is featured with a in depth interview in the Summer Issue 2018. He talked about how his artistic practice is rooted in experimentation with natural processes and the idea of place. He told us about sustainability and the using local resources is the key in trying to minimise his artistic footprint, whilst still being able to engage the viewers with works of undiscovered or transient beauty. Joumana Medlej, who’s also featured in the Summer Issue 2018. She gave the third talk and she took us on a wonderful journey about natural colours, nature and traditions. Our last talk was given by Katie Edwards, one of our subscribers, who recently graduated from Chelsea College of Art. She talked about her final project based on creating textiles from waste materials, in her case from the scraps of her everyday products consumption. During our next event scheduled on the 26th of July 2018, we will be learning how different entrepreneurs, start-ups and established businesses are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious and realising that being environmentally friendly can be also profitable. We wouldf like to recall for those of you who desire to join us that our events are held at Raw Lab in East London. If you can’t attend our event, you can always join us livestream on our Facebook Page. If you couldn’t follow the event in livestream, don’t worry, you can join us on our YouTube Channel NoSerialNumber. com where you will be able to findl the videos of all the events.

A mAGAZINE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRAFT MOVEMENT Why the name “No Serial Number”? Because nature and craft share a common characteristic, they are not made in series. They are both the result of an organic, slow process of growth and development. Not one leaf is the same, nor is a handmade creation. Crafts remind us that our hands and minds can work in tune with our natural environment to make things that are useful, or simply beautiful. As a society, we are in urgent need to slow down and preserve our collective environmental and artisanal heritages from unsustainable production practices and corporate greed. No Serial Number Magazine is a humble attempt to explore how human creativity, nature and activism intersect in contemporary society. Who is it for? artists, artisans, casual makers, craftivists, and conscious citizens Topics textile arts • natural colours • traditional trades and crafts • creative upcycling and salvaging • slow fashion • zero-waste lifestyle • biodiversity • kitchen chronicles • grassroots environmental movements INDEPENDENTLY PUBLISHED BY NO SERIAL NUMBER ISSN 2516-1776 (Print) ISSN 2516-1784 (Online)
