2010-11 Season Outlook Every new season offers a fresh start, and never has that rung more true than with the 2010-11 women’s basketball squad. Having graduated six seniors in the spring of 2010, the Cadets lost roughly 62-percent of their point production and

48-percent of their rebounding. Head coach Mark Zacher embarks on his second season at the helm of the Norwich women’s basketball program. His first campaign with the Cadets resulted in a 20-8 overall finish, dropping only two of their 13 home contests. Zacher will be expecting a lot of his returning athletes to step up and become role models, as he works to help his first recruiting class find their legs and prepare them for the collegiate level of competition. “We are a very young team,” says Zacher. “I am looking to our team captains – seniors Christine Daniels and Laurel McWilliams and junior Kelsey Knapp – to provide our team with the leadership and guidance

that we will need to grow together as a unit.” The captains will lead by example, setting the standards for hard work on and off the court both vocally and physically. The Cadets’ goal for the 2010-11 season is daily improvement as individuals and as a team. “Our true competition is always against ourselves,” says Zacher. “We want to be better today than we were yesterday and better at the end of the season than we were at the beginning.” Zacher will expect the same output of energy from his squad whether they are playing the competitive Emmanuel Saints or running a practice drill. If Norwich doesn’t beat their opponent by the points on the scoreboard, it will be expected they would have outworked their opponent physically and mentally. “This is a team, I believe, that will be known by its work ethic, its desire, and its commitment,” says Zacher. To fill the shoes that were left behind by last year’s seniors, the Cadets will be looking for the returners to produce more and the newcomers to make an immediate impact. “We return proven performers in Daniels and McWilliams,” says Zacher. “Knapp and junior Jocelyn Fasulo will have expanded roles and sophomores Jessalyn Sweeney and Andrea Vogt will be looked to for solid contributions. But truthfully, to be successful, we will need our entire team to be major contributers, every night, to our team effort.” As for the first-year players, Zacher brought in two point-guards:

5

Kristin Brown and Tylita Butler. “They will be given an important responsibility immediately,” says Zacher. “Together they will be asked to run our team on the floor. In addition, Erin Clark will give us a solid option on the wing.” In addition to a new squad, the Cadets welcome a new assistant coach, Lutfiyya Muhammad. Muhammad comes to Norwich after a very successful career playing both Division I and Division II collegiate women’s basketball. She started her career at Division I Delaware State University, where she was a member of a MEAC conference championship team in her freshman year. Transferring after that season, Muhammad played three years at Division II Cheyney University in Pennsylvania. At Cheyney, she reached the 1,000-point plateau and was a twotime PSAC all-conference performer. “She knows firsthand what it takes to be successful at the collegiate level both as an individual performer and as a team,” says Zacher. “Lutfiyya brings the wealth of that basketball experience and her youthful enthusiasm to our program.” The Cadets 2010-11 campaign will commence on Nov. 15, as they travel to Plattsburgh State for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Lutfiyya Muhammad

Head Coach

Assistant Coach Lutfiyya Muhammad enters her first season at Norwich University as assistant women’s basketball coach. Graduating from Girard College High School in Philadelphia, PA in 2006 with academic honors, Muhammad began her college education and basketball career at NCAA Division I Delaware State University. A Dean’s List student at Delaware State, she was a member of the 2006-07 Lady Hornets basketball team that won the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship. She transferred after her freshmen year to NCAA Division II Cheyney University on a full academic scholarship. While at Cheyney, Muhammad continued to excel in the classroom, landing on the Dean’s List once again. She had an outstanding basketball career and graduated summa cum laude. On the court, Muhammad led the Cheyney Lady Wolves to back-to-back conference playoff appearances. She was her team’s captain for two seasons, team co-MVP for two seasons, and a two-time Second-Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) player selection. Muhammad finished her collegiate career with 1,004 career points; a 10.1 points-per-game average.

The 2010-11 campaign is Mark Zacher’s second at the helm of the Norwich University women’s basketball program. In his first season, the team achieved an overall 20-8 record and a Great Northeast Athletic Conference mark of 10-2. They advanced to the GNAC championship game and the 2010 ECAC Division III New England Women’s Basketball Tournament. Prior to coming to Norwich, Zacher spent eleven seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at the NCAA Division I level. He was the associate head coach at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. for the 2008-09 season and aided the program, in that one season, to doubling their total wins and conference wins over the previous year. Zacher also spent 10 years as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. At “The Mount,” during Zacher’s tenure, the program achieved a 109-79 record in Northeast Conference play, winning two NEC regular season titles, and qualifying for ten straight NEC tournaments. Zacher is a 1980 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been involved in coaching basketball since 1989. He has experience as both an assistant and a head coach in three different Pennsylvania high schools. In addition, he was the executive director and coach of a very successful AAU program. Zacher is a seasoned veteran with excellent experience in scouting, preparing workouts, and recruiting. He has also written well-received coaching articles that have appeared in numerous basketball journals. During his collegiate coaching career, Zacher has had the pleasure of coaching three conference players-of-the-year, eleven allconference-team selections, one conference rookie-of-the-year, seven all-conference-rookie-team selections, twelve 1,000 point scorers, and one Olympian – (Dita Krumberga, 2008 Latvian women’s basketball team).
