Issues with Social Studies Textbooks NHS Social Studies Teachers launch new textbooks only to run into problems with the number recieved and use of the online version. Students and teachers look for solutions.

Emma Daignault Business Manager Recently, the Social Studies Department received new textbooks, but there has been a slight problem. There is not enough books or additional resources. Of the three required courses, World History, US History, and Civics, each have a few class sets or just one, so many students do not have access to a textbook at home. The Social Studies Department was told they were going to be given eighty AP texts and only recieved twenty-five. Although this was a disappointment, Laughton feels the online version of the textbook is more convenient. Mr. Laughton explained, “Students prefer the online textbooks for easy access.”

ed.” As for the textbooks they do have, “The process of selecting the right textbook is a challenge, it is a commitment. I researched the Civics text, and there was only one presented to us that was not an AP, or Honors text.” Not only do students like a physical textbook, based on the survey, but teachers do as well. Mr. Von Arter, World History teacher, opened up and shared his views regarding the online version. He stated, “(it’s) so difficult to use we don’t really use it.” There was many steps to reach the textbook online “It’s very quirky.” Mr. O’Shaughnessy, Social Studies Department head, spoke about the issue. He said, “We were supposed to get a class set and an E version. It does not affect my students, but we did not get our money’s worth.” SP ORTS

The online textbook is proving to have difficulties as well. Julian Ramirez (’17), a junior, finds the online version “overly complicated.” It also has a lot of “clicking” in order to get to any particular location. A survey was conducted by Mr. Karl in his US History class. The results showed that fifty students prefer to have a physical textbook, rather than the online version, in which only eight students said they prefered. Mr. Karl, who is part of the Social Studies curriculum committee, believes that not having enough physical textbooks could be a liability if students with learning disabilities need books at home. Also, it brings up the issue of students who do not have access to the online version at home. Karl also described, “It is a challenge when we are required to diversify learning for students, yet we do not have all the tools need-

Norwalk High School welcomed back “Peer Tutoring” for the second official year, directed by guidance counselor Mr. Joseph and his intern Ms. Denke. Peer Tutoring is something everyone struggling in school should take advantage of. Ms. Denke said, “The Norwalk High School ‘Peer Tutoring’ program seeks to promote a collaborative academic environment where students, faculty, and tutors work together to enhance students' academic and personal growth.” She continued, “some of the brightest minds in our school community in collaboration with some of the students in the National Honors Society look to provide a tutoring program that is not only for students who are having difficulty with the course material, but also for students who are looking to excel.” Peer Tutoring was implanted to help students from freshman to seniors achieve higher grades in the classes they struggle with most. Tutoring after school and during study halls is done on a walk-in

Blood Drive Success Monica Mercuri Editor in Chief Norwalk High School’s annual National Honor Society “Blood Drive” took place Friday, November 6th in the gym. The event was sponsored by the American Red Cross and around fifty students and staff participated. NHS contributed forty-three pints of blood, compared to its goal of forty-five units. National Honor Society President, Priyanka Thakkar (’16), believed the drive was very successful and thanks everyone who came out to support. Thakkar explained, “Our goal was to get forty-five pints of blood and we achieved forty-three with very few deferrals. We were told that this was excellent in terms of most high school blood drives and I want to thank all those who helped out.” Mr. O’Shaughnessy, Social Studies department head and advisor of the society, was very proud of its members for getting a large amount of students and staff to participate. O’Shaughnessy added, “They all have set an example to younger students and shown the light of "service" for them.” He continued, “some of the whole blood units donated today may actually save

someone's life.” According to the The American Red Cross.com, “Almost 20% of the millions of donations made each year come from high school and college blood drives.” This had become a tradition and has positive effects in the community and around “builds morale and camaraderie as students work together for a good cause.” Erin Vallerie (’16) donated blood during the drive and explained why she did it. Vallerie said, “I wanted to do it because I found it to be an easy way to help others.” The next blood drive will take place on April 22, 2016. All students who are interested, please read the list of requirements before you sign up. If you are eligible, please participate and save someone’s life by the use of donating blood.

basis during the scheduled hours in the library. Any student that is seeking extra help is welcome to stop by to meet with a tutor during any of the scheduled hours. Students can also be matched with a tutor during schools hours for individual need. Juliet Bonsangue (’16) is one of the head advisors; she added onto what Ms. Denke had to say, “this is my second year tutoring, I think it is very beneficial if a student comes with an open mind. All the tutors are really friendly and will help you with what you need, also it’s peer to peer so it’s less intimidating.” View the calendar to see which tutors are scheduled after school and during study halls. A wide range of subjects such as English, Math, History, a World Language taught at the school, Science, etc are offered. It runs Monday through Thursday from 2:15-3:00pm, but also includes various study halls throughout the day and is located in the lower library. Tutors range from sophomores to seniors. There are currently thirty plus tutors who are willing to help. Please contact Ms. Denke in B House for more information.

There are hundreds of kids at Norwalk High School that continue to make a difference everyday. Whether it is playing a sport, participating in student government, creating a club, or helping others within the community, these students deserve to be recognized by their teachers and peers. Every issue, there will be a new student featured in this column who has impacted NHS in extraordinary ways. The “Student Spotlight” for the December issue is Deanna Singewald (’16). Singewald was born in Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, CT. She has three siblings: her twin brother Reid, her older sister Olivia, and younger brother Will. Singewald, being a multiple of two, loves it. Her and her brother were five hours apart at birth, so technically she is the “older” twin. Her twin brother Reid commented on his relationship with his sister. He added, “Deanna at times can be very hard to deal with, but is a very genuine person and I love being her twin.” Singewald grew up in Norwalk, however her favorite restaurant resides in Darien, named Papa Joe’s. It is her preferred Italian restaurant and fulfills her culture of half Italian and half German. If she could live anywhere in the world other than Norwalk, Singewald said, “I would live in Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.” Coincidently, it was where her brother Reid was currently, while she was stuck in school. Singewald’s best friend at NHS is Elvira Theodoridis (’16). They met freshman year in Italian class and have been best friends ever since. Theodoridis explained, “Deanna is a very enthusiastic energetic person which sometimes makes her hard to deal with, but she is also very caring and puts others before herself.” What Singewald is most notably known for for is her involvement with the NHS Track team. As captain her junior and senior year, it is her favorite thing to do and has shaped who she is. She found her passion for running in elementary school, Singewald added, “in fourth grade for gym, we had to run a lap on the track every week and I fell in love with it.” Her biggest accomplishments within her sport so far has been qualifying for divisionals and making state opens last year. As the season approaches, she hopes “to win FCIAC and States, even though States is a little more tricky.” Throughout her track experience, she owes her success to Head Track Coach, Mr. Moffett, who is also a math teacher at NHS. Singewald explained, “Moffett has always pushed me. I struggle with confidence issues, but he always reassures me and tells me I can do it and never to give up.” Singewald hopes to continue to run track in college and is unsure where she is going to attend for the next four years, but wants to major in elementary school education. NHS wishes the best of luck to Singewald on her upcoming track season and in the future. We know she will continue to make us proud and run to victory.

Block Scheduling is a new schedule coming the fall of next year to NHS, in which students will be taking four 90 minute classes per day, instead of 45 minute classes. Students were asked how they feel about Block Scheduling coming to NHS.

“I did the math, and the block schedule only adds 17 hours of class time per class over the course of the year. I don’t think that’s significant enough to entail a difference in student achievement or performance.” -Maeve Bustell (’16)

How do NHS students feel about Block Scheduling?

I think it will benefit the amount that we learn but for the teachers that have a hard time teaching for 45 minutes block will be a lot harder and time might be wasted.” -Sam Troetti (’17) I think the Norwalk school system should have gotten input from students. We are the ones getting educated and if we don't enjoy it, there is no reason to keep it.” -Varun Thakkar (’18)

I think it is a bad change. Next year kids will want to go to class even less now knowing they have to be in the same class with the same kids and the same teacher for an hour and a half. ” -Jason Gorman (’19)

“Teachers will be forced to mix up change their teaching styles and transition from notes and lectures to a more interactive class.” -Colin Baker (’18)

“Longer breaks between classes will be nice, but students will use this time to goof off. A lot of people compare the block scheduling with college. The only difference is that in college there is liberty. Here, we are put into small classrooms unable to leave the campus, which will lead to trouble happening inside the school instead of outside.” -Anna Siefkan (’18)

I know a lot of people that have a short attention span and they can not focus for a really long time. I think that with block scheduling and the longer classes students won't be able to pay attention for the whole class and therefore they won't get as much out of the lesson as they would if the class was shorter.” -Emilia Cuevas (’19)

Foster Care

Animal Dissection Hannah Keyes Sports Editor

A staggering estimation of twenty million animals are abused annually in assorted teaching exercises and around half of them are used for classroom dissection according to PETA. Animal dissection is a common form of teaching many high school students about the anatomy of an animal. The debate is whether or not it is ethical and necessary to kill animals for school purposes. Oftentimes, the animals that are dissected in biology or anatomy class come from fur companies, pet stores, and slaughterhouses. They are usually stockpiled on top of one another and shipped in crowded containers with no temperature regulation, food, or water. Many think that dissecting a frog is a rite of passage in high school. Dori Bartush (’18) says, “It’s okay to dissect an animal only if it is for educational purposes but I don’t like that animals are killed.” Mrs. Silva, a biology teacher here at Norwalk High School gives her insight on the topic and says, “Animal dissection labs are an important learning tool and most kids don’t get it because they don’t have the experience. The only sad thing is the little animals.” However, there are many other alternative forms of learning about animal anatomy. With the rise of technology during this time and age, there are online simulations where one could be virtually dissecting an animal. When it comes to animal lab dissections, there is only one opportunity to get it right. Virtual methods allow stu-

dents to repeat the material as many times as they want without the mutilating or harming of an animal. Studies at PETA show that exposing students to animal dissection can “traumatize them, foster insensitivity toward animals, and even dissuade some from pursuing careers in science.” It is possible that animal dissection labs teach students that an animal’s life is disposable and unimportant. Raven Matthews (’18) says, “I don’t like how they breed animals or how some teachers force the students to do it.” In the school systems, lessons are given about the biodiversity crisis and its negative effects, and yet, we are contributing to these issues. If NHS can help to prevent even a small fraction of this, then we have helped to preserve many innocent lives.

Brooklyn Whitecotton Reporter According to the National Foster Parents Association, almost thirty years after the founding of Jamestown Colony, our nation’s first official foster child was Benjamin Eaton at only age seven. During 1853, Charles Loring Brace began the free foster home movement. In the early 1900’s, social agencies began to supervise foster parents. Records were kept, children’s individual needs were thought of during placements, and the federal government began to support inspection’s of foster homes. Anyone could be from a foster family, has history in foster care, or has been adopted. “I was two years old when I went into foster care and I was in foster care for six years. Within approximately two years I went through three foster homes and they were not that easy to go through. I did not feel like I was apart of the family, I felt like I was by myself,” said an anonymous student. Fostering is not an easy thing, from the foster parents perspective and the foster child’s perspective. There is a lot of work that goes into putting children in homes, making sure they are safe and in a good home. Foster children go through a lot when they move from home to home.It is especially not easy for teens, most people wanting to adopt want a baby, not a sixteen year old. The DCF (Department of Children and Families), try their hardest to make sure every child they get are put into a good home. “Any child that comes to DCF due to safety factor or the parents can not meet the need of the child, we try to find permanent homes of each child. We first try to get the parents to take the child back or get family members of the parents to take the child, if no one will take the child we find them a permanent home,” said Ingrid, a social worker at DCF for twenty one years. Foster care is something that takes a long process and it is great what the DCF does for all the children they put into foster care. Not everyone may have a good experience but that is why the DCF is in the world to help all the children that need it. There are many children that are looking for a family, even if they have to wait.

In the reader's hands is twenty pages of hard work, an endless amount of effort, hours of the journalism staff’s time, and the readers underestimation. Students really do not understand what is truly put into The Paw Print. This past October, the tenth annual Paw Print was released. The comments received by the journalism staff and the way they saw the paper treated caused a huge discussion in the journalism room. The staff of the paper was assigned to approach other students and get feedback from them the day after the paper was given out. Some of the comments were the following: “I’m probably gonna throw this away,” “Do I have to take this?” “It’s so boring this year.” One student commented, “They need more color.” The Paw Print is already $800 with the color that is front, back, and center. The staff of The Paw Print goes out on their own time to collect ads from multiple places, and some of the places asked, even say “no”. One of the Sophomore reporters of The Paw Print, Emma Daignault (’18), mentioned, “It’s a lot of work to go out on your own time and get ads. I wish we could do full color, but we don’t have enough time and/or money to pay for it all.” The Norwalk High School newspaper is funded by those advertisements and half the time they are not even acknowledged. With all of the hard work and effort put into to writing and editing the articles multiple times, and the editing of every single word, every single one of the pages in The Paw Print, students are still leaving them in the bathroom sinks, cleaning spills with them instead of using napkins or paper towels, leaving them in their classes and not even bothering to read or even look through them, and more. “The students who work for The Paw Print devote a lot of their time, including myself and it’s very unpleasing to see the newspapers being mistreated. Norwalk High and Brien McMahon High School rivaled off at the annual Thanksgiving Day game on the twenty sixth of November. “My highlight of the game was seeing offensive tackle James Makszin score a two point conversion for us and what made it so great was because he achieved the unexpected and it was nice to see him do something he has always dreamed of. Hunger made out team who we were, we wanted to win more than our opponent each week and we also put the work in all throughout practice each week,” said Deandre Russell (’17), who is NHS’S slot back. This year the game will was held at BMHS and NHS took home the trophy. NHS Football player, James Makszin (’17) stated, “I was looking forward to beating McMahon, we meaning the team spend so much time together and we worked really hard, and could not be happier with the outcome of this game.” As the Norwalk community got ready to devour their second and third plates of turkey and mashed potatoes, the tension between the schools had to be demolished first. "I hope the kids realize that and saw how close we were and only good things can happen going forward," said Coach

The NHS Football team celebrating win

Ireland, who was quoted by Pete Paguaga thehour.com NHS and BMHS had a good game. Norwalk took the win with a score of thirty six compared to McMahon’s score of seven. Football team Co-Captain, Brendan Brown (’16) said, “We obviously were expecting a victory going into the game. The team's chemistry was on point. Kristjan Frrokaj was throwing the ball great to the receivers and the line was doing a great job blocking for the running backs.” The boys ended their season with a ratio five to four wins to losses. They showed positivity and great team spirit which is why next year they will come back with a even better ratio The Bears are preparing and are set to win next year's Thanksgiving game and bring home the trophy once again.

Additionally, Mr. Karl explained, “We have had a ton of support from Father’s Club with materials and supplemental funding. It is great the funding of the paper has been reinstated after not having it for 3 years. The Thriller Bears, Norwalk High School’s dance team, has become an essential part of the culture here. Students and faculty continually count on the dance team to brighten up spirits. The team had initially been recognized during the 2014 pep rally when they showcased their talents and since then they have been the key component to any pep rally. It all started in 2013 when NHS student Berdine Joseph found an interest in dance and music and started the team. Now captains Zhanya Wrentz (16), Chantel Williams (’16), Amber Nicolas (’16), and Chinari Campbell (’16) have taken the lead. The four of them choreograph the dances by themselves. Wrentz described, “We vibe off of each other until something spectacular happens and then we put it all together.” They have practices like any other team in the mini gym or in the cafeteria, and they have tryouts in the beginning of the year. By striving to be the best they can be they take hours learning new moves and then weeks to perfect it. “We don't stop un-

til they are up to par,” said Wrentz. “It takes a lot for us to get everything in order and done but performing makes it all worth it,” said captain Amber Nicolas (’16). Their hard work definitely shows during pep rallies. Students look forward to having the dance team come on. “I think they are really good and they have really good choreography. I know whenever they perform, everyone gets really excited and they can't want to watch them,” said Esha Sharma (’16). “During pep rallies, the adrenaline rushes through us and we feel every emotion knowing everyone is watching us. When the crowd cheers us on it makes us want to go harder. We feed off of their energy,” continued Wrentz. The dance team strives to become better with accomplishing new goals in the near future. “So far we've been getting great feedback from other students as well as faculty but we plan to continue to involve ourselves in our community and outside of school,” stated Nicolas. They hope to be recognized as more than just a dance group and more as team, “People don't take us too seriously but what we have coming up, proves that we are not a club, we are an actual team that strives together,” stated Wrentz. “For right now we just want everyone to know that we mean business and that we take dancing very seriously. It's a new year and a new team and we want to keep the dance team's reputation as good and clean as possible,” continued Nicolas. The team includes many passionate individuals that influence each other with girls that are competitive and ready to improve. They love to dance and they definitely show it to the NHS community.

ately after all of the staff’s hard work, effort, and time put into this past issue made them feel disrespected. “It’s frustrating because I feel that we do not get enough credit because we aren’t as publicized as BCN. We put in a lot of hard work and thought into the paper and I wish that people would take the time to read it,” said staff writer, Allison Pitasi (’16). If readers are going to just treat it like garbage and act like it is worth nothing, take a semester. The work may or may not change their minds. Whoever is reading this right now, maybe now people see how much time, effort and hard work is put into this paper and will actually appreciate it. Although the journalism staff got a lot of negatives, they also got many positive feedback as well.

Helping Seniors Sara Roman Opinion Editor Two years in the making Seniors Helping Seniors has not only branched out to more students in Norwalk High, but also make a difference in the lives of our communities seniors. Starting in 2014 at the end of his junior year, Jacob Alexander (’15) created Seniors Helping Seniors for his Project Explorer, a senior independent study that is then presented at the end of their senior year. The club activities include but not limiting to helping seniors at Marvin Senior Center in East Norwalk at least once a month. They do activities such as arts and crafts corresponding with the seasons. For example, making hand print turkeys during Thanksgiving time and Valentines Day in February. “The people we see have lived their whole lives already and have great stories to tell. Their faces light up when they see us, ” said Monica Mercuri (’16), the current co-president of Seniors Helping

Seniors. Along with Mercuri (’16), is Michael Vallerie (’16) as the other co-president. They have made it a goal to further to enhance and expand the activities of the club so the legacy will go on. With tasks such as not only raking leaves for the elderly as they do now, but also possibly shoveling snow for them as well. Jennalee Potmesil (’16), a member of the club, said, “The best part of being in Seniors Helping Seniors is seeing how happy all of the residents at the Marvin are. It makes me feel good that us visiting can brighten up someone's day so much.” Having fun while giving back to the senior community is what the thirty+ members of the club do best. It is a wonderful experience for any students, though the name says seniors, the club is open to anyone that wants and is willing to join. If any students has a little extra time on their hands, why not go and join Seniors Helping Seniors to help the elders in the community or even other centers.

Made in the A.M “Focus” on Ari Jennalee Potmesil A&E Editor It has been a rough year for One Direction. On March 25, 2015, Zayn Malik decided to leave the band. Understandably, fans were devastated by the sudden turn of events. On that day, there were thousands of tears shed and enough crumpled up tissues to start a new continent. However, the remaining members of One Direction showed nothing but support for their former member. Liam Payne reassured the fans via Twitter that the five boys were still the best of friends, and that they all wished Zayn well. The boys also took to Twitter to thank the fans for remaining, well, fans. They promised that their upcoming shows would be the best ones they have ever put on, and guaranteed new music as well. Tension started to rise when Zayn was spotted hanging out with Naughty Boy, a producer who had produced Sam Smith’s music. Zayn was seen walking into a re-

cording studio, which almost immediately sparked controversy amongst fans and people who were not fans. The rumors about Zayn starting a solo career spread. Later on, it was discovered that Zayn Malik had signed a record deal with a new label. The fans were torn between being happy for him and being angry that he left the band to pursue a new career, one without the boys by his side. Fans thought he was being selfish for leaving the boys in the middle of a tour, but others insisted that they were happy with whatever he decided to do, because they wanted him to be happy. Since then, One Direction (Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles) have kept true to their promises. The British-Irish band released a single called “Drag Me Down” on July 31, 2015, the first song that did not feature Zayn’s voice. They have also released a new single called “Home” in October 2015, and have an album coming out on November 13, 2015 called “Made in the A.M.”

Maria Saldana Reporter Focus on your girl Ariana Grande, because she just dropped a new single just a couple days ago called “Focus.” It is already doing well on the charts, which is not surprising. A lot is happening in this young artist’s life, she even went platinum blonde for the music video for “Focus.” “Focus” sounds a bit like her other song “Problem,” and it has an upbeat sound to it. It makes someone want to get up and dance, yet is also provides her fans with a powerful message that she feels very strong about. This song was so fun and amazing that it debuted number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, and this time, the singer

did it completely on her own. She has made it to the top once, but only because it featured collaborations with artists such as Iggy Azalea, Zedd, and the Weeknd. The song does have its own flaws, like the chorus for example. I am not trying to bash the queen or anything, but the chorus just ruined the whole song. The man singing in the background ruined the song, and some Arianators even edited out the man’s vocals. The lyrics were also a bit repetitive, but it was okay because they did mean a lot to her as a person, and her as an artist. Arianators, her new music is going to come out soon, so get your iTunes cards ready, and prepare yourselves, because her singing voice may take you away into another place, and to another time. It is Ariana's time to shine, so “focus” on her.

Fandom Killers Abigail Kniffen Photo Editor Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, which eventually adapted into a TV show in 2010, this action packed story portrays life in a zombie apocalypse. Careful spoilers approaching. Led by officer Rick Grimes, a group of other survivors that includes his family find themselves moving frantically and often to search for a safe and secure place to stay. It becomes increasingly harder each day to stay alive. They discover that the overwhelming fear is more deadly than the zombies that surround them. “The Walking Dead” has grown in large quantities since it aired its pilot episode on October 31st, 2010. Fans long anticipated the extensive wait from February to October. The show was able to snag AMC’s Highest Premiere Ratings in 2010. The most viewed season as of now has been season five out of six seasons thus far, with 17.3 million views making it the highest viewed show in cable television history. The producers and directors are known for killing off main and favorite characters. Avid viewers have figured out

that the “dead” outweigh the living by five thousand to one. Actors who portray the “walkers” actually have to go to zombie school where they undergo vigorous training on how to walk, eat, and kill like a zombie. Sounds that the walkers make are later added into the scene, while filming they are silent. The comic book and show have their differences though. The biggest thing is that the characters are different. They added a few different characters into the show that were never mentioned in the comic books. The latest buzz with this infecting show is the topic of whether or not the Steven Yeun character “Glenn” is dead or not. Glenn has been a character since the first episode of the first season and is loved by many. Recently he got caught up in a “herd” and was knocked down. It looked like it was going to be the end for him. The show is now approaching its mid season finale and “the walkers” have breached the walls of Alexandria. Stay tuned to find out what happens next. “The Walkers” have overrun AMCs network and it does not look like they are letting go of that bite anytime soon.

Glee has evolved in many different aspects throughout the years, from Gaga and Perry week to a week dedicated to Finn’s death. The Cory Monteith special touched hearts around the world. There was something so gratifying in how raw the episode was conveyed. Glee has given young adults a vision of high school that in no way, shape, or form is what it is like. Example, children do not get thrown into dumpsters or slushied. What they show is a parallel universe, what we experience is life. From the random students who were somehow are always around to play music for them, and that creepy piano man who literally can play every song known to man, it gave kids hope for high school. Will Schuester was the Glee director and probably one of the most genuine teachers a school can have. He saw nothing but positive and amazing things in each and every one of the kids, even Puck, who us Gleeks know could be a handful. Hopefully, you do not have a Sue Sylvester in your school. If so, good luck. From her constantly trying to disband the Glee club to making every student she comes in contact with feel absolutely worthless, she definitely has left her mark on us Gleeks. Kurt Hummel and Karofsky shared a kiss even though Karofsky was a homophobic “straight” jock, who constantly put down everyone around him for being the slightest bit different. Kurt found love from his arch nemesis the Warblers, also known as Blaine Anderson. Blaine soon transferred to McKinley High to be closer to Kurt. There was a few bumps in the road just like any ordinary couple but their everlasting love for eachother kept their relationship strong. Once they both graduated, they moved to New York, and created a family. Glee has taught lessons in untraditional ways. They were not afraid to be truthful about transgender and gay teens. They taught a lesson on death with a teenager, and how to deal with it. Lastly, they taught a lesson on unconditional love that everyone needs to strive for.

The Holiday Season Brings Cheer Hannah Keyes Sports Editor

Christmas music is the perfect way to display the joy and merriness that Christmas embodies. There is so much to look forward to during Christmas. Starting with the piney fragrance of a Christmas tree freshly cut and brought inside, the doorbell announcing the arrival of family and friends, the oh so desired presents under the brightly lit tree, the comforting warmth of the fireplace, and the cheery evocative music that nearly defines Christmas. Without music, Christmas is a silent movie. Presents are not wrapped in anticipation, but dutifully. The seasonal chores of Christmas are a drag. Christmas, with music, is beautiful. Many think that Christmas music is annoying and repetitive, I say it unites us in excitement, expectancy and,

most of all, in hope. These days it seems like there is so much that divides us, the music of Christmas is shareable, we all know the words and can hum the melodies. Music tells us stories, of grinches, dancing snowmen, and even an adorable red-nosed reindeer. It calls the faithful to gather in exultation and triumph. It places the most wondrous images in our mind of snowy landscapes or of being with loved ones next to a warm fire. Norwalk High School celebrates the holiday season with exciting concerts showcasing the band, orchestra, and chorus. NHS’s annual Candlelight is well-known throughout New England and is the perfect way to view the immense talent at NHS and listen to some wonderful music. Even if you are not one who celebrates Christmas, the seasonal music is a good way to be in touch with the spirit of winter. In the end, Christmas is meant to be a time of love and celebration, and music an extension of this wondrous holiday.

Quinn Sandor Reporter “Everytime you kiss me it's like sunshine and whiskey.” Country music has come a long way from Jimmie Rodgers, the first country superstar in 1931, to Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, and Florida Georgia Line. People have been country music more and more lately. Country music has moved around America more and more. People are now listening to it on a consistent basis. It used to be that it was only listened to in the South, in states such as Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Now it has expanded all over the United States. Country artists did not really come to the North East on a consistent basis. Now Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Frankie Ballard, and Brad Paisley have come up here to perform and most likely plan to come back. Every year, the Country Music Awards are held and each year country music seems to get bigger and bigger. The

CMA’s seem to be part of the reason why country music has expanded into such a big music industry. It is also becoming more and more like pop music, which a lot of people listen to on a daily basis. Due to this, people are beginning to listen to country music because it is getting similar to the music they listen to every day. Eventually in five to ten years, country music will start competing constantly for the top of the music industry. People will be listening to it more and more. Country artists will start to make more money off of people buying their music. Soon, it will be the genre out there that everyone loves and listens to. Country music is no doubt one of the best types of music out there now, and will continue to be one of the best out there as well. Country music gives people that feeling of “Wow, thats good,” or “Today is going to be a good day.” Country music allows listeners to have a sense of pride and joy. It gives people an extra pep in their step and help them realize that whatever it is they are doing, that they can get it done and have a little fun while doing it. That is why Country music is one of the best types of music out there today.

Quirky classics, a new genre of books that take famous stories of romance and drama, changes them into something that gives it a little more spice. Like the tale of love blooming for Elinor Dashwood and the handsome Edward Ferrars. While her sister Marianne has the trial of falling for the rugged Colonel Brandon while her husband Willoughby is away, all occurring in nineteenth century England in Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. Mashed into Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Ben H. Winters and Jane Austen. The Dashwood sisters being evicted from their home and sent to live on a dark and mysterious island inhabited with beautiful yet monstrous, half sea creature and half man beings. Fighting for their lives with tentacles snapping at their heels while beckoning for true love from the depths of the deep blue. Such as the world of cyborgs and robots that are no mystery in the dystopian society of Android Karenina by Ben H. Winters and Leo Tolstoy, a play based off of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. A classically told love story between Anna Karenina and Count Alexei Vronsky that has many twists and turns, mixed in with all things steampunk and high-tech. Protecting the world with newer and more advanced cyborgs while having just as much drama, scandal and romance. Lastly, The Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, a tale most have heard the name of. Five sisters Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia Bennet are on the venture for love and find more tribulations than joy in the task. Finding themselves being disliked, but staying strong and sticking by each other side as independent,

dignified women. Now answering questions that were left open in the original and adding zombies. In comes Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. All the drama is doubled by the girls fighting for their lives in the plague ridden village of Meryton. While the heart-wrenching story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy struggling to love and live. This now common mash of genres gives a whole new life to classic literature. Our beloved classics are no longer “out-dated,” they are now even more enjoyable for anyone at any age.

Let us go back to the day the first recording of a song was created, April 9, 1860. The recording was made by a Frenchman Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville. It was of a woman singing “Au Clair De La Lune.” From the 1860’s to today, music has made a huge change in our world, going from ragtime to rock ‘n’ roll, and disco to modern pop. In the 1920’s jazz was huge. Bringing up artists such as Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, and Louis Armstrong. Music called “boogie woogie” became a popular type of music, with a mix of ragtime, urban blues, and jazz played by Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis. Onto the 1940’s music was pretty much still the same with the blues, but along with that bluegrass was created by Bill Monroe using blues inflections. Bluegrass became an important strand of country music with artist such as Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. During the 1960’s people listened to soul, folk, and rock music. Soul music brought along artist such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding. As for folk musicians Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez, they expressed political discontent. Around 1965 british beat and british blues merged to form rock music creating amazing artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. When the 1980’s came along, heavy metal became a huge thing. Hard rock and electric blues was fused by Motorhead, Def Leppard,

and Guns ‘N’ Roses. There was also music called two tone. United Kingdom new wave groups called Madness and The Specials revived ska and reggae to create a new type of music. Today there are artists such as Fall Out Boy singing rock music, Fetty Wap rapping rap music, Taylor Swift singing pop music, and Luke Bryan singing country music. All of these artists make millions every time someone buys their songs. Music is something most people believe to set one free into their own world.

An Infrequent Warming Welcome Evan Watson- Shannon A&E Editor

What and Why: Horoscopes Sara Roman Opinion Editor When people hear the word horoscope, most will think of the twelve most well known constellations. Those are called the zodiacs and no they are not the same as a horoscope. They are part of one another, a horoscope can not be created without the zodiac constellations. The concept of the zodiac and horoscope is not simple, a person can not look at the night sky and figure out what their day will be like tomorrow. When the earth rotates around the sun the stars do not move but appear in different places in the sky along with creating an illusion that they are passing by the sun. Over the course of a year different constellations will appears in front of the sun each month, so from one specific date to another creates the zodiac season for example from March twenty-first to April nineteenth is considered aries season.

“People do question why others follow their horoscope as if it is a sacred thing, and how superstitious it is.”

Best Dept. at NHS Monica Mercuri Editor in Chief I am not writing this opinion piece so Mr. O’Shaughnessy will give me an A, but simply writing this to thank the Social Studies department for making my high school experience the most memorable. My routine throughout the day begins with grabbing the Journalism keys from Mr. Karl’s room, and then going to lab to edit articles and make the paper happen. Then, I make my way to Mr. O’s room and tell him about my daily problems, awaiting the usual response of him telling me “everything’s going to be alright” and to “calm down.” I owe many things to this department. My eventual and hopeful college major of journalism and international relations, my constant questioning and curiosity of the world, especially with Donald Trump, Russia and Putin’s antics. Because of the vast variety of courses provided by this department, I can accurately say I have acquired an understanding of the world, one I would not have gained without the courses they have offered. Sophomore year, I enrolled in Mr. Laughton’s Honors US History Course, which was by far one of the most enjoyable. I learned the history of the nation through the use of group activities, creative projects like the “Decade Project” and a strong emphasis on content. It is with this knowledge I would later use to help with my advanced history courses throughout my junior and senior year. Junior year, AP Government and Politics was by far my favorite class. It is in that class that I was no longer “shy” to speak in front of other people, but took risks. During the mock trial, I took on the position as head prosecutor on a difficult rape case, and saw a side of myself I never knew existed. One that was passionate and driven to achieve justice. For my senior year, I am taking AP Comparative Politics and AP European History. May I mention, I have these class-

es back to back. Some students may think that I am absolutely insane for taking two AP Social Studies courses in a row, but I look forward to it everyday and know it will help me in the future. Nothing is better than learning the basics of a Britain Parliament and watching The House of Commons “question time” in one period and learning about King John and the Magna Carta the next. It is all relative. In addition to all these classes, I have been taking the journalism course as Editor-In-Chief for the 2015-2016 school year and I have no idea what I would be doing without out it. As the The Paw Print celebrates its ten year anniversary and the successful couple of years Bear Country News has had, the way students relay information and hold the powerful accountable is incredible. These two influential media programs would not be possible without this department. The Social Studies department is not just a regular department to me. I known I can go to the S.S teachers for anything. It is to them that I owe my success and why I appreciate history, politics, journalism and the world so much more.

Now one might ask how that correlates with people’s emotions and how they act. The way each of the zodiac constellations are placed and their alignment with other planets affects people is the same way the moon affects the tides. It can pull and fluctuate the chemical balances in our bodies that regulates our emotions. Every zodiac sign has a list of positive and negative traits that can be seen in a person under that sign. That does not mean everyone fits into those characteristics, some could just have a few things in common and other could be the complete opposite, but most of the characteristics can be seen as the beginning building blocks of our personalities. People do question why others follow their horoscope as if it is a sacred thing, and how superstitious it is. Horoscopes are so general that anyone in under that sign can connect with it and once you have that connection, other things in life can tie in as well like events, people, and work. Some enjoy being able to see what life is going to throw at them even if it is vague, and in that case checking a horoscope is the closest thing to it.

One of the most warming welcomes you will receive when walking through the doors of high school will be from your Guidance Counselor. With at least 1600 kids in Norwalk High School, how is it physically possible for Norwalk High School’s eight guidance counselors to keep up with all of our problems. Not only do they have to maintain and stay steady on all of our issues, good and bad, they also have other responsibilities, like Mrs. Wintermute is in charge of all AP testing, and Mr. Joseph who is in charge of peer tutoring. NHS guidance counselors cannot quantify the amount of students they see a day. Most counselors have an average of 200 kids, but quantities will vary on the class size. Once fall rolls around and schedules are out, most of their attention will be set on seniors who are getting all their information together for college applications. Student specifics relate to needs, interests, or referrals. Needs like the juvenile detention board and the Alatine program for those who do not know is a support program for students struggling with alcoholic parents or guardians. Some students complain about how they never get the time in to see their counselors, but what can one expect when they have so many other things going on around them. Stamford High School in Stamford, CT has at least 2400 to 2900 students enrolled within the school and only has nine guidance counselors. Which leaves students at NHS wondering why the guidance counselors run into problems. Staples High School in Westport, CT has roughly 1800 kids enrolled with eleven guidance counselors, so they most likely do not run into the same problems the kids do here or at Stamford High, but you never know. Counselors also have to deal with the chaos of college applications, FAFSA for those who do not know is financial aid, and stressed out seniors who are trying to figure out if they are going to college are not.

If any student has a question and cannot get in touch with their counselor, there are seven more to whom they can reach out to for help, aslo including the four house masters. Unfortunately, most students do not take into consideration all the other responsibilities our counselors are faced with. They are not neglecting you or ignoring your needs, but they need to spread attention to everyone so wait your turn. Be more patient and accepting and they will help you with whatever you may need.

Her days feel longer and energy gets lower trying to wear

the disguise of happiness when in reality, she would rather curl up in a ball. That is not an option because it would draw too much unnecessary attention and it would worry people who think she is “okay.” When she types okay on a screen, tears flow down her face because of a million different things that are not okay, going on in her head. Soon she will be better she keeps telling herself. Everything will be just fine. She says it again and again trying to convince herself. Nothing is getting better, but she believes in those false hopes, hanging on to them like her life depends on it, because it does.

Brooklyn Whitecotton Reporter Makeup is a form of art. The products are the paint and the person’s face is the canvas. People make a living on working on a set doing someone’s makeup, but not all makeup artists are female. Artists such as Kandee Johnson, Gucci Westman, Tom Pecheux, Charlie Green, and Sam Fine have made a living becoming a professional makeup artist. Not all makeup has to make someone look like a barbie doll. Some of the best makeup artists are people who make someone look like a zombie, a lake monster, or even an old man. Matthew W. Mungle, John Carl Buechler, and Joel Harlow are some of the world’s best makeup artists who get paid to make someone look terrible. People think that girls wear makeup to adjust what they think is an imperfection and that is why girls use concealer. Guys telling girls that makeup just makes them look worse is not going to stop girls from putting on makeup. In my opinion, to wear makeup is to show who a person is and to make a statement in someone’s life. Companies like Maybelline, Revlon, and CoverGirl, still use animal to test their products. There are companies such as Mary Kay, Avon, L’oreal, and Estee Lauder are working on getting a “no animal testing” policy. Powders and blushes are made with minerals, oils, perfume fragrance, and pigments. Lipstick is made out of wax, oil,

alcohol, and pigment. Mascara is made with water, wax, thickeners, and carbon for black or iron oxides for brown. There are many makeup companies around the world like BareMinerals that opened in 1976 and Sephora that opened in 1970. Those companies sell a million types of mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, eyeshadow, etc. There will always be someone in the world that will buy makeup products, giving all those makeup companies their money. Everyone has separate thoughts on makeup, whether they hate putting it on or they love making a change in their face. Photo Credit: beautyscene.net

If a woman has curves in all of the right places, then she is automatically called “thick” and she is praised. If a woman is skinny but has a “perfect” body, then people will find her to be flawless in every single way. However, if the “thick” girl has the slightest amount of fat on her stomach, or if she has “too much” fat on her thighs, then society will call her body disgusting. If the “skinny” girl does not have fat in the right places, then she is not considered a “real” woman. Basically, it is a lose-lose situation for women, and it should not have to be that way. According to the World of Psychology.com, eighty percent of women today are not happy with their body image, and this is absolutely awful. Today, people do not understand that there is no such thing as a “perfect” body. No one will ever be completely happy with their body, they will always find a way to fix it or to improve it. No matter what, people will judge you for your body, so why try. It is common for teenagers to be negative towards their peers, and that is completely understandable. What frustrates me personally is the fact that certain teens go out of their way just to body shame a woman, like there is no point in hurting others over something that they can not really control. Who cares if someone’s body is bigger or smaller than yours, it does not give you the right to judge them. If they are happy with their body, let them be happy, do not take that happiness away from them. If they are not happy with their body, then do not make the matter worse. Stop body shaming women, not all women are built the same way. Some women are curvy, and some women

are thin, but they are all the same and they are all equal. We are all equal, and we are not going to let each other be judged by others.

Procrastination Refugee Views Hannah Keyes Sports Editor Procrastination lives among all of us. It not only lives, but it creates a nest and manifests itself into our DNA. It is almost never a one-time occurrence. I am here to inform everyone of the most proper and effective way to procrastinate. In order to correctly display the art of procrastination one must first empty their minds. An empty mind leads to forgetfulness, which leads to you remembering your homework at ten at night and scramble to get it done, thus procrastination. Also, make sure you do not write anything down whatsoever, managing your time is unneeded. There is no purpose for those absurd planners. The next step is to lie to yourself. Tell yourself that you work well under pressure and it will be all good. No worries is the motto. Be sure to overestimate the amount of time you have to complete the assignment and underestimate

the amount of time it will take you to complete it. As a result, you will most likely not leave yourself enough time to finish. Often, times going to the library during study hall can fix this problem. It is the perfect time to type your English essay that is due next period. One of the most critical steps to being an effective procrastinator is getting easily distracted. Get that phone out and social media could be your ticket to distraction bliss. Any form of a screen normally serves as a practical and efficient distraction. Next, blame the teacher who assigned the work because we all know that their goal in life is to ruin the lives of students. All of your teachers meet up and decide to assign work at the same time. As well as make sure that all of your tests are on the same day in order to bother you, it is just a known fact. Just to verify this point, I waited until the night before this article was due to complete it, sorry not sorry.

Evan Watson-Shannon A&E Editor Conservatives have had a tough time accepting the fact that the U.S. is set to boost the number of total refugees accepted in 2016 from 70,000 to 85,000. The Administration plans to do this by setting up screening outposts in Lebanon and Iraq. Sadly it seems that the Conservative campaign against refugees is just beginning. On November 19, 2015, the House of Representatives passed a bill to severely restrict refugees from Iraq and Syria, which Obama promised to veto. A recent controversial proposal the Conservatives have brought forth, is to suspend all government support for refugees settling in the U.S. They have raised the topic of the funds being spent on the refugees and how it could be spent elsewhere. The “disaster in Syria dwarfs anything we have seen for decades, with millions of peo-

ple uprooted and seeking safety in other countries. It is a humanitarian emergency of staggering proportions, and we need to do more,” said Patrick Leahy, who serves on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee who was quoted on the fiscaltimes.com Anyone trying to reject them are just scared for themselves which is knee-jerk reaction. The majority of which are women, children, or families who unfortunately had to grow up in warfare, trying to escape. Not all terrorists are Muslim, however, ever since 9/11 most people view Middle Eastern people as Islamic. Not all middle eastern people are terrorists. Just like not all people from the Middle East are Islamic. Some are Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, etc. The Conservatives are judging on appearance and not character, which is a violation of basic human decency. Every precaution should and will be taken to secure and make the country safe, but society should also help as much as they are able, party affiliation aside.

“Feel the Bern” is the newest slogan quickly traveling between Democrats. As 2016 is fastly approaching, America is getting ready to pick a new president. Many have agreed that Bernie Sanders is a phenomenal choice. He understands why the nation is rapidly spiraling down and what needs to happen to fix it. He has openly acknowledged that there are many things that need to change in order to rebuild this country. Some of his main concerns so far through his campaign have been college tuition, a living wage, racial justice, rights of women, veterans, and LGBT. The younger generation of the United States is especially taking an interest in the senator from Vermont, mainly for the fact that he understands what they want and what is necessary to prosper in the future. He especially speaks to them about lowering college tuition which is one of largest amounts of debt for a young adult. In a recent interview, Sanders spoke with CBS News and stated, “in the year

2015, it is time for the federal government to allow states to go forward as they best choose,” Sanders said at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, adding that the U.S. should “remove the federal prohibition on marijuana.” Marijuana is quickly becoming a large debate in America and Bernie is on the side that it should be legal. Sanders has had a remarkable year filled with success in spite of being labeled a socialist even though he labels himself one. With the recent attacks in Paris, Sanders stood up and spoke out. He stated, “We must create a new organization like NATO to defeat the threats of the 21st century” he continued, “Some of the most wealthy and powerful nations in the region, who up to this point have done far too little.” Bernie is racking up those votes for the primary, making him a potential democratic candidate running against the republican opposer. We the people, should nominate a candidate who is passionate and understands what the country needs as a whole based on wants, needs and the issues that the American people face day to day.

Reporter Veteran’s Day is one of the most important days of the year. Most families have Veterans who have served and Norwalk Public Schools not having this day off is wrong. November 11th, the day to honor those who have served our country. It is wrong that we have school on this day and only very few teachers take time out of their class to discuss Veterans day. Without our Veterans, we would not be the country that we are today. It is a national holiday but it is up to the state and/or school system if they want to have the day off. Norwalk Public Schools took away Veteran’s day in 2009. This decision was made by the Superintendent Dr. Marks. However, it is now up to the current Superintendent to decide whether or not it should be a district wide holiday. The reasoning behind why they took away the holiday is because they think that it is better to be in class and honor the Veterans rather than students be at home and do nothing about it. While their assumption may be right, some kids may not do anything at all. There are still a majority of kids who would much rather be at home with their families and honor the Veterans. We do not do much in school to discuss Veterans as expected. Being a person who has Veterans in her family, I think that taking this holiday away was the wrong decision. Journalism was the only class to take time and honor the Veterans, so there was no point of keeping us in school. I would rather go honor the Veterans on that day and not be in school.

The Board of Education should look back at this decision and realize that should be one of the holidays that we have off. I understand that with all the other holidays we have, that it is hard to pick and choose which ones we can have off, and there are ones that we cannot take away. It is just insane to me that we cannot give this holiday more light and respect the Veterans.

part of our culture. The taking away of tag at recess, and the taking away of dodgeball because it singles kids out. Has our society really become the coated and covered that a kid can not even get hit with a dodgeball, a gym class favorite. We are constantly hiding generations from the reality of how cruel the world really could be and the more we baby each incoming generation, the harder it is for society to progress and the harder it is to get a move on with your life after high school. There is a big difference between bullying and joking around, and nowadays it seems like we cannot tell the difference. It is not our own fault. It is the people above us that put the idea into these kids heads that they are being singled out and that, “No he is not joking he is picking on you.” Everyone needs a good dose of reality and it is better to be exposed at a young age starting with the gym class games. The more we baby each generation, the harder it is going to be for each one.

Hat Trick Pride Quinn Sandor Reporter A hat trick is one of the hardest things to complete in sports. The hat trick can be completed in hockey, cricket, soccer, field hockey, and horse racing. In sports, there is two different types of hat tricks. The first type is the regular hat trick. This is when just three goals are scored in the game. The other type, the natural hat trick, is when a player scores his/her three goals in a row with no one else on either team scoring between those three goals. When it comes to soccer, field hockey, and ice hockey, a hat trick is just scoring three goals. It is one of the hardest things in the game to do. If a player is lucky he/ she scores maybe one hat trick a year. Corey Perry, a top goal scorer in the NHl, had three hat tricks. How ever two of the top five players in the NHL did not score a single hat trick all year. That shows just how hard it is to score a hat trick in a game. Usually when a hat trick is scored, the player's team goes crazy. When the third goal is scored fans of that team take their hats and throw it on the field or ice. Hence the name

The history of the Super Bowl starts with the merging of the “National Football League” and the “American Football League,” last but not least who could forget the rubber bouncy ball. The championship game between the NFL and AFL was created as a mutual agreement in 1966. The original name of the game was “The NFL-AFL World Championship Game”. The name was quite a mouth full for fans and media watching the first game in 1967 therefore they eventually started calling it the “Super Bowl,” making it the unofficial name which eventually became official in 1969. On January 15th, 1967 the first initial rivalry was between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The packers ended up winning with a score of thirty five to ten. Sixty million people tuned in that night around the country to watch the game. The game was located at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with an attendance of 61,946 people. When the Packers won they received a $15,000 bonus while Kansas City only received $7,500. At the end of each game the winning team receives the Vince Lombardi trophy, named after Vince Lombardi who was the head coach of the Green Bay packers who

“Hat Trick.” Horse racing is different. Horse racing’s hat trick is when someone wins three races in a row. This as well is very difficult. For this, all one needs to do is win three races in a row. The biggest hat trick of them all would be the triple crown, which was completed for the first time, by American Pharaoh, since 1978 by Affirmed. The hat trick first came along in a cricket game in 1858 when HH Stephenson took out three wickets on three pitches. The fans held a celebration and all the proceeds went to buying him a hat. The term hat trick was officially used in 1878 when it was used in a newspaper. Eventually it caught on with other sports, such as hockey, soccer, horse racing, and a few more. The hat trick can vary in many different ways throughout sports and can make or break the game. Whether it is scoring three goals, or winning three games in a row, the hat trick is one of the biggest achievements one can reach in a game or season. Completing the hat trick means a lot to people who do it. It gives one a sense of pride on the ice or field.

Mackenzie Lowden Reporter While walking the streets of Manhattan, most people would normally walk past the homeless men and women who are sitting on the sidewalks or who are up against the buildings like they are just a crack in the wall. However, people really do not understand how much they are truly in need. On the night before this past Thanksgiving, I went to Manhattan with some people from work along with about twenty other people. There, we gave out several necessities to each homeless man and/ or woman that we came across until we almost completely ran out. There were several suitcases filled with bags full of toiletries, hats, scarves, and gloves. We also gave out food, water, and sweatshirts to those who were in need. The reactions from these people were truly heart breaking. As soon as they saw us coming, it lit most of their faces up. It is really sad seeing people actually living like this. You just wish you could give them everything they need once you realize how they actually feel and what they are going through. This experience was truly upsetting, yet amazing. It made me realize a lot; mostly how much I have. I really have no

reason to complain. None of us do. Imagine not having a family that loves you enough to help you, a home to live in, a bed to sleep in, fresh food to eat, clean water, clean showers, etc. Imagine living on the streets, not knowing if anything is going to happen to you. The world we live in is crazy nowadays, anything can happen. Imagine how these homeless people feel. So many people are homeless due to job loss, divorce, untreated mental illness, PTSD, etc. Although there are many living out on the streets, there are also homeless shelters offered to them. Homeless shelters are temporary places to live. They give the time these people need to get their life somewhat back together. Homeless shelters offer a more safe place to sleep than on the streets, job training to help them get back in the game, and soup kitchens to keep them up on their feet. Although some people are not actually homeless, you can definitely tell which ones are and which ones are not. Those that are actually not just want money and are just too lazy to work for it. No matter what, people have to appreciate what they have. There is always going to be someone else out there who is in need of what you have that they do not. Next time you come across a homeless man or woman, do not just walk past them. Give something you have that they do not. They are people too. Photo credits: larry5154.wordpress.com

led his team to victory. The trophy was named after his death and prior to Super Bowl V is his honor. The trophy itself weighs seven pounds and is twenty one inches high with a value of $25,000. The first super bowl tickets were relatively inexpensive by the standards of today. The tickets for the first game ranged from six to twelve dollars. Today, the tickets are increasingly more than that, they are approximately six to seven hundred dollars. The Super Bowl has become an important trademark of the United States and is watched by over 100 million according to www.cbssports.com. “It is the one moment of mass-market cultural left in the States,” stated by www.stuff.co.nz. Everyone seems to want to be apart of the game. Tune into Super Bowl L (Fifty) on February 7th, 2016 Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the home stadium of the San Francisco 49ers.

One of the best feelings in the world as a kid was winning a trophy, actually earning the trophy. As a child who grew up playing every sport, winning that trophy for coming in first place or winning the championship was everything to me. It was the absolute goal of every season, and if we did not win it that year you went 365 days thinking about it til next year. Now I look at my brother, he is ten, and I look at his sports teams and for his age it seems like there is not much to look forward to. My brother is an exceptional athlete and all he cares about is winning, but for the kids around him, it does not matter to them because at the end of the day they could lose every single game and still know they will get a trophy. News flash! Not every kid deserves a trophy. It has become such an overrated, politically correct, almost embarrassing,
