North Yarmouth Academy & the Homestay Program Founded in 1814 and located in Yarmouth, Maine, NYA is an independent, coeducational college preparatory school for toddlers to students in Grade 12, plus a post graduate year. There are 355 enrolled students with 50 faculty members. The Academy offers a structured program, and students are required to participate in an athletic or other approved extracurricular activity during each of the three seasons per school year. The Academy’s homestay program is a vital component of the NYA International Program. Serving as a host for one or more students can be a rewarding experience. Homestay families provide enriching cultural experiences and make lifelong connections with their students. Homestay parents can make a positive and lasting impact on a young person’s life. NYA carefully chooses each homestay family, and students are welcomed as a part of the family. To help ensure a positive experience for both students and homestay families, the Academy provides clear expectations and careful oversight of the program. NYA homestay families can be current NYA families, alumni parents, faculty members, and members of the greater community.

Benefits of the Homestay Family Program There are several benefits of the NYA homestay experience compared to other housing arrangements: For students where English is not their native language, there is no better way to become fully immersed in the English language than living with a family. It provides a more authentic cultural experience. There is also an added level of safety for homestay students; a family is looking out for their interests, just like in the student’s own home.
“Having Julian become part of our family and the NYA community has been the greatest gift! We are thankful to have been part of his experience here and look forward to being part of whatever his future holds. -Danielle, NYA Homestay Parent

Why Host a Student? NYA has a long history of welcoming students who are from other states and countries. In recent years, NYA has hosted students from Austria, China, Canada, Germany, India, and Spain. Students live with families in local homes. Serving as a homestay family for one or more students can be a rewarding experience. •It provides enriching cultural experiences for both student and family members. •Lifelong connections are created between student and family. •Homestay parents make a positive and lasting impact on a young person’s life. “Leaving home can be a little daunting. Coming to NYA I was a little nervous, but my homestay family really helped my transition. I never thought a bunch of strangers would make such a great impact on my life. The Kings are an amazing family who are so nice and welcoming. Our relationship will extend beyond NYA.” -Julian, NYA Class of 2020, from Canada
