Leslie HurdThe intimate ceremony took place in the newly redecorated courthouse attended by close loved ones. Originally intended to be a private ceremony, the couple’s excitement soon extended to their closest circle of friends.
Alana and Kia have known each other so long they can’t quite recall how or when they met. In 2020, they strengthened their friendship and formed a deeper connection that evolved into their own unique love story. While the transition from friends to lovers was slow, a significant turning point was when Kia adopted a quirky little furball named Theo, and the two found themselves falling in love with the kitten and each other. Two years later, in keeping with the couple’s free-spirited nature, they decided to tie the knot in a casual and spontaneous affair.
Kia and Alana don’t take life too seriously, as evidenced by their exchange of strawberry- and raspberry-flavoured Ring Pops.
In Their Own Words: “An intimate ceremony and a great laugh with a few close ones was exactly what we wanted to celebrate our wedding day,” says Alana. “We loved how stress-free the lead up was, and how much everyone enjoyed themselves. The weather turned out to be beautiful, and even in late October, we got our pictures on the beach. Now that we are married, we plan to have a ‘Happily Ever After Party,’ a bigger celebration where everyone can have a great time celebrating love.”
Sol i Mar restaurant at the Coco Reef Resort offers a truly unique dining experience. Beautiful floor to ceiling glass windows surround the restaurant, imparting picturesque views of the ocean. Our menu features creative international cuisine infused with Bermudian flavors and an extensive wine list that includes wines from around the world for an unforgettable culinary experience. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner for two or an enjoyable evening with friends, our attentive staff will make sure your visit to Sol i Mar is nothing short of extraordinary!

Melissa and John met through mutual friends in May 2019. Frequent texting led to a video chat when John told Melissa that he was coming to Bermuda and that he’d love to meet her in person. It was instant summer love when the couple came face to face in July. Melissa had children from a previous relationship, requiring a bit more logistics when it comes to travel, so John made frequent trips to the island to visit her. When it became clear that the couple was meant to be, they set to work planning a wedding brunch.
“God brought us together, but faith and a lot of patience got us to where we are today,” says Melissa. “We are grateful and thankful for the sacrifices that we conquered together. We got all that we could have asked for and a little more.”
The wedding was pulled together in a remarkable two weeks thanks to the wedding party’s willingness to step up and help. “We can definitely count on them at any time,” says Melissa.
The wedding brunch took place at Fourways Restaurant & Inn, where Melissa and John enjoyed a brunch date on one of his visits to Bermuda. The couple enjoyed the food so much, they decided to have a Fourways brunch wedding.

“Getting married in Bermuda, where we were both born and raised, was perfect,” says Alex. “We had all of our family and friends with us, and we were excited to marry each other after 11 years. We now have a beautiful baby girl named Camryn, and we can’t wait for a lifetime together.”
Jarryd and Alex met at Cartridge World, where they both worked parttime while mulling over their futures. Jarryd, a skilled golfer, was deciding whether to go pro, while Alex was trying to determine the course of study she would follow once she started university. Alex had a second job at The Mid Ocean Club, which sometimes had her filling the very divots Jarryd created when he hit the links there. The couple fell in love over phone calls and movie dates.
The couple did a photo shoot at The Mid Ocean Club golf course; in addition to the couple’s connection to the course, Alex’s father was the course superintendent for more than 30 years. The newlyweds took several photos at the tree that was planted there in Alex’s father’s memory.
Alex changed into sneakers with “Mrs. Dillas” printed on the side for the reception. “It was a game changer,” she says. “I highly recommend doing that, especially if you aren’t used to heels.”

“A benefit of getting married in Bermuda is that the vendors have established relationships with one another, making for easy interactions between vendors,” says Rachel. “This was extremely helpful as we planned the wedding from London. A special shout-out goes to our on-the-day coordinator Rochelle Quinn, managing partner of Apex Bermuda Destination Management, for ensuring the day ran without the smallest of hitches.”
OUR FAVOURITE FEATURES: With a history rooted in West Africa, Gombeys are an iconic symbol of resilience and freedom in Bermuda. It was extremely important for Rachel and Adrian to honour this part of their heritage on their big day. H&H Gombeys delivered a dynamic, personal, and deeply emotional performance which ended up being a huge highlight of the day.
Rachel and Adrian are both Bermudians and have known one another since they were young. They were properly introduced at a Super Bowl party in 2014. The two spent time together as part of a group of friends for a few months before Adrian mustered up the courage to ask Rachel out on a date. Love came quickly after that, and Adrian proposed to Rachel in April 2021 at London’s Pergola Gardens at Hampstead Heath.
One of the couple’s first dates was a picnic at Heydon Trust, which became a special spot for the two of them. With almost 300 guests at their wedding, Rachel and Adrian wanted to carve out time for just the two of them, so after the ceremony they exchanged private vows at the Heydon Trust Chapel.
In honour of the couple’s strong, proud Bermudian heritage, Adrian’s wedding band, created by Davidrose, includes Bermuda cedar. Davidrose also designed Rachel’s engagement ring and wedding band.

Monique and Matthew met through mutual friends and began dating soon after. Two years later, in 2010, the couple welcomed son Matteo. After nine years together, Matthew proposed during a family trip to Italy and involved Matteo in the engagement, making it a truly beautiful and special moment in the couple’s favorite place in the world.
Wedding favors were small bottles of olive oil produced by the bride’s parents using olives harvested from their trees in Abruzzo, Italy, where they live and traditional Italian candy was presented in beautiful handmade bags crocheted by Monique’s aunt.
Monique is half Italian, with Italy’s culture being a prevalent part of her life, and honoring this influence was an important part of the couple’s wedding. The Commissioner’s House lent a nice mix of Bermuda and Italy to the occasion, with Bermuda’s stunning ocean as the backdrop and stone buildings in the keep yard evoking an Italian feel.
“I can honestly say that our wedding day was a dream,” says Monique. “It was one of the best days of our lives, and for weeks after our son asked if we could do it again. We knew that not everything will go as planned, and we wanted to make sure that no matter what happened, we were fully present in the moment, enjoying every minute, and we absolutely did. It’s so important to not get caught up and to actually enjoy your day. Be present, because it does go by fast.”
Surrounded by her bridesmaids, mom, and aunt, Monique had a fun and relaxing morning of wedding prep thanks to her dear friends, Megan Desilva from Blueprint Hair Studio and makeup artist Afroditi Yiovreki, and wedding planner Giuliana Gonsalves of The Traveling Bride, who made sure the wedding party was well fed and their champagne was topped up.
The couple’s son, Matteo, took his role of ring bearer very seriously, before cutting loose and showing off all his dance moves at the recep-tion. He looked dashing in his Italian suit.
Monique says she’ll forever cherish the breathtaking photos captured by Alexander Masters.
Flowers are an important element of wedding-day décor. Whether you’re looking for on-trend arrangements or searching for a style that stands out, pairing up with a local florist is the best way to ensure your big day is beautifully accented. Flowers by GiMi’s Head Florist Sally Sedgwick shares her tips for incorporating blushing blooms, verdant greenery, and even fragrant local fruits.
Get more bang for your buck by using locally sourced greenery or dried flowers, a big trend at the moment.
Sweeten up your welcoming party with fresh, locally sourced fruits, which Sedgwick incorporates into a long runner of greenery and accent flowers.
Modern-day colour trends have couples opting for blush tones, whites, and greens. Some couples buck the trend with vibrant, tropical hues.
Just like the fashion industry, where trends come into style again about every two decades, certain flowers that were once considered outdated reemerge as top choices for couples. Over the past few years, baby’s breath — popular in the 1980s, when it was often paired with carnations — has become a top contender. Sedgwick recently styled a wedding where the delicate bursts of blooms were accented by flowers, with gorgeous results.
While Pinterest can be a great source of inspiration, Sedgwick advises that couples speak with local florists who can offer practical advice and in-person examples of different flowers or arrangements.
Because of its small size and isolated geographic location, Bermuda can’t support the kind of growing operation required to supply flowers for the many weddings that happen here. Nearly all flowers must be imported, and part of that process includes inspection of every single stem for invasive insects. It’s not uncommon for flowers to be confiscated upon arrival due to pests.
“We advise our brides of the possibility of flowers being confiscated,” says Sedgwick. “We’ll always have something to substitute — and we’ve been doing this for 15 years now, so we know which flowers are high-risk. Ultimately, we want to bring your vision to fruition and create exquisite memories to cherish.”
For the better part of a century, men’s fashion in Bermuda seems to have followed the old adage, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” Dress shirt, necktie, blazer, knee-length socks, loafers, and, of course, the iconic Bermuda shorts have long made up an ensemble that’s both comfortable and practical and appropriate for the boardroom, happy hour with friends, and yes, even weddings. Add Bermudian flair to your groom and groomsmen’s wedding-day look and wedding party gifts with advice from island clothiers and retailers on the latest trends.
While you want to look good on your wedding day, you want to feel good, too. Bermuda is a semitropical island with a mild climate. Dress accordingly so you can celebrate your nuptials in style and comfort.

Island-inspired finds from West End's Royal Naval Dockyard to lovely St. George 's and everything in between.
Retailers and high-end brands that rival shopping options found in major world cities are treated with splashes of colour and old-world charm in Bermuda’s quaint towns. Here on the island’s West End, you’ll find the Clocktower Mall, named for the two clock faces displayed on twin 100-foot-high spires.
As a well-established wedding destination, island retailers offer unique items for wedding party gifts, and you can source local ensembles for outfitting your wedding party as well. Bermuda makes a beautiful wedding day backdrop, that much is for certain. Whether you’re planning a destination wedding or you’re a Bermudian preparing for your big day on your home island, here is some need-to-know info.
• File a Notice of Intended Marriage form with the Registrar General at least 15 days and no more than three months prior to the wedding day. If you download the form, it must be printed on legal-size paper — 8.5" x 14". Fill out the form and mail it to The Registrar
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT YOUR SPECIAL DAY IS ABOUT YOU AND YOUR BETROTHED.

• Civil ceremonies are performed by the Registrar General in a special marriage room at the Registry General Office on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Civil ceremonies require an additional fee of $260. Two witnesses are required for every ceremony. Registry General staff are available to act as witnesses on weekdays, but you must inform the office of your need for witnesses when you confirm your marriage appointment. For Saturday ceremonies, you must bring your own witnesses.

COUPLES WHO ARE TRAVELLING TO BERMUDA WITH THEIR CLOSEST FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR A DESTINATION WEDDING SHOULD CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
• Before you create your guest list, decide how big you want to go. Do you want to celebrate with immediate family and best friends only, or will you open up the party to workmates, old roommates, and second cousins once removed?
• For destination weddings, your “save the dates” should be sent six to eight months in advance, with formal invites arriving three to five months before the big day.
• Be specific on your invites. Address them to the names of those in the household you’re inviting, including children if you’re planning a kidfriendly day. Be clear about whether a “plus one” is an option for your single guests.
• Create a wedding website to serve as the main hub of information. This is easy to do even for technologically challenged couples thanks to sites that allow you to plug your info into a user-friendly template. Include dates, times, and details for the ceremony itself as well as other events like rehearsal dinner or farewell brunch. Share tips on things to see and do in Bermuda for guests who want to explore on their own during down times.
ceremony performed by the captain of the ship. Make arrangements through Royal Ocean Events, info@royalwed.com, or P&O Cruises, celebrations@pocruise.com.
• Non-Bermudians who wish to marry in a Roman Catholic Church must meet several requirements. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton in Bermuda recommends planning at least 8 to 12 months in advance. Find more information by visiting www.romancatholicbermuda.bm/ information/international-marriages.
The most important thing to remember when planning a wedding in Bermuda, whether you’re from the island or you’re coming from away, is that your special day is about you and your betrothed. It’s your day to design for you and your partner to have the most fun imaginable. If you’re having the time of your life on your wedding day, there’s a good chance your guests will be, too.
