So, half way through the year!! Where has it gone?! I’m sure many of you are asking the same question as it just seems that the year is flying away – we’ve already passed through Autumn and we’re a month now into Winter so that means Spring is only around the corner! There goes the year! When things are busy they seem to fly by so much faster and we seem to have been very busy around here over the past few months and the coming months are no different. On the entertainment side we have David Campbell on Friday 6th July. Tickets are selling fast for this show so get in quick while you still can! Then we hit Christmas in July on Saturday 21st - told you the year was going fast! What might help you to forget that the year is flying is the sensational new show from hypnotist Mark Anthony. I think the maxim here though is ‘buyer beware’ but you are sure to have a fantastic night as this is one funny guy! Not stopping here though as we race into Spring (wow!) with The Australian Foo Fighters Show on Saturday 1st September – Australia’s premier tribute to one of the greatest alternative rock bands around! A great show to see and for those of you who are dads out there, a great one to have as a night out before Fathers’ Day on Sunday 2nd September. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner in the sensational Char restaurant. As if that’s not enough, following on from the TV giveaways in June, we have some sensational CASH giveaways throughout July and August and multiple chances to win, win, win with our Show me the Money promotion. Draws are every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the club. See further details within the magazine. On a more serious note, as we approach the new financial year, the Club has launched its new ‘Adopt a Charity’ programme. At our recent staff meeting Hetty Johnston from Bravehearts addressed the Club staff about the work that their organisation carries out to stop child sexual assault throughout our society. Many of you will remember Bravehearts from a feature earlier in the year when the Club’s Marketing Manager,
Justin Ribot, took off to paddle across Bass Strait to raise funds for the organisation. For the next 12 months, Bravehearts will be our charity of choice with Norths and our staff making a weekly payroll donation to this organisation. This is a fantastic charity doing some amazing work. Sadly some of the tales are almost unbelievable but are true and are often on our doorstep and yet unknown to so many of us as to what goes on. We are very lucky to have people such as those involved in Bravehearts working in this field and we are very proud to support them as a Community Club. If you would like to know more about the work of Bravehearts or to donate yourselves please visit their website www.bravehearts.org.au. Have a very safe and happy next few months!

The new age of workplace training... Towards the end of last year we ran an article on the new Queensland Clubs Management (QCM) Scholarship and QCM Leadership Training Programs. These programs are now well under way and proving to be a huge success across the 5 Clubs in the QCM portfolio. The QCM Management Trainees are combining diverse in house training with unique and challenging hospitality development experiences. One of the keys to these training programs is the hospitality experiences where the management trainees spend time outside of their clubs to strengthen and develop their hospitality and management skills. During May the QCM Management Trainees experienced a very unique ‘Out of the Box’ training opportunity with P & O Cruises on their Food and Wine Educational Cruise. Nicky Cowan, the Club’s Human Resources Manager, organised this educational experience where the QCM Management Trainees attended a 3 day cruise which departed from Brisbane. On Board the group attended seminars and workshops on food and wine education and par-took in back of house tours of the Ship’s galley. This was a unique and interesting training opportunity and everyone was exposed to some useful ideas and concepts to bring back to their Clubs. The training opportunities provided to the QCM Trainees are allowing growth and development and ensuring succession staffing plans for the future. John Ribot, the CEO of QCM, is an advocate of investing in training and development of staff.
July-August ’12 Norths
John understands that the people make the business and that the younger generations, who will be the Managers of the future, need to be kept interested and challenged during their career progression. Training, development and succession staffing continue to be the key elements of the HR Objectives of the Clubs in the QCM Group. The QCM Scholarship and Leadership Programs have already become highly regarded in the industry with the programs soon to be expanded to incorporate clubs outside of the QCM Portfolio. The next intake for the QCM Scholarship and Leadership Programs will open up in the later part of this year. The staff from the QCM Clubs are very keen and excited about applying for a place in these elite training programs. The world is changing and training needs to be fresh, interesting and stay abreast of the ever changing workplace. The QCM Management Trainees, through the QCM Scholarship and QCM Leadership programs, will be well equipped to be the future Leaders of the Hospitality Industry. These current groups are due to graduate during 2013 and we wish them all the best during their training and development with QCM. QCM – Developing Industry Leaders of the Future.

Norths announce support for Bravehearts Norths Leagues & Services Club support many local organisations as well as junior rugby league. Now the club will extend its support and sponsor Bravehearts, an organisation which is dedicated to stop child sexual assault in our society. Hetty Johnston, the founder of Bravehearts visited Norths and spoke to staff on Wednesday 20th June. Hetty founded Bravehearts in 1997 after a disclosure by her 7 year old led to the realisation that a close family member was a paedophile and had preyed on innocent children and their trusting parents for 40 years. With the support of her family Hetty decided that the time had come to change the culture of silence that has, for too long, aided and abetted the assault and torture of our most vulnerable members of society, our children. The search was on for a symbol to demonstrate this issue. After much discussion, there seemed no better symbol to highlight the issue of child sexual assault than the humble ‘White Balloon’. The White Balloon was considered symbolic of the issue of child sexual assault following reflection on a public demonstration, which was held in Belgium on 20th October, 1996. On this day 300,000 people gathered with white balloons and white flowers in a show of public sympathy and support for the parents of the young girls who were either murdered or missing at the hands of a previously convicted and released paedophile Marc Dutroux. White Balloon Day is now an annual national event run by Bravehearts. It is widely supported by commercial, government and community sectors alike. In addition, White Balloon Day enjoys overwhelming support and encouragement from the media, schools, churches, health practitioners, emergency services, the legal fraternity and community organisations.

Norths General Manager Stephen Gallacher hands cheque to Hetty Johnston founder of Bravehearts.
Hetty’s address to the staff at Norths has inspired the club to support Bravehearts in whatever way it can and fundraising and awareness programs will be seen in the club throughout the coming year. We would ask all members and visitors to support Bravehearts and their great work in helping to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child.

forms which are located throughout the club to get valuable feedback from members on everything from dining to bingo.
“It’s my job to listen to members and find out how we can improve the club” said Michael.
Michael gives an example of two of the comments from the forms.
“When I hear of any good or bad feedback it is written down and reported to the clubs management” he said.
“We had Chicken Schnitzel, very moist and tender, best meal and we have been coming to the club for over 30 years, keep it up”
Michael is well placed to help members and make sure they enjoy the club. “I started at Norths when I was at high school, in those days I was a roustie” he said. Rousties are employed by the club to do the heavy lifting moving tables and chairs and general work around the club. From there Michael worked as a barman and helped in the marketing department before he undertook a traineeship at the club. “I like to sit down and talk to members, have a coffee and listen to their ideas, then that information is handed on to the clubs management so we can make changes as required” said Michael. Norths also use the “tell us what you think!” feedback

or another… “The band was very loud tonight, we had trouble holding a conversation” Michael said he rang up the customer about their comment and passed the information on to the relevant manager. The volume of the band was then monitored over the following weeks. So if you have anything good or any issues that you would like to raise about your club “tell Michael what you think”, it’s his job to make sure the club are listening to their members so that Norths provides the best levels of friendly service, the most delicious meals and quality facilities all year round.

A recent research project reported that Make-A-Wish® wishes have a significant positive impact on the health and wellbeing of wish children. 97% of parents surveyed observed a ‘noticeable improvement’ in their child’s mental and emotional health following the granting of their wish. Physical health improved discernibly in as many as 75% of cases. Since its inception in Australia 27 years ago, Make-A-Wish® Australia has granted over 7,000 wishes to children across the country. Make-A-Wish® is a non-profit organisation that receives no ongoing government funding and is critically reliant on the generous support of individuals and organisations.
Caitlyn’s wish was to meet Kate from Masterchef.
