We start the New Year as a new club. After five and a half months our refurbishment completed midDecember and the new look club is unrecognisable compared to where we have been in the past. Before I go on, I must take a moment to thank all of you, our patrons, for your patience and for your ongoing support throughout our refurbishment. An undertaking of this size and which affected so much of the club all at one time, was certainly a project that required continual management to minimise disruption but also one where disruption was sadly always going to be unavoidable and we greatly appreciate that so many of you dealt with this in a light-hearted and supportive manner which really helped all of us as well. It is an important challenge for any business to keep asking of itself, who are we, how are we perceived, are we providing what we want and need to provide to our patrons. The challenge is to stay relevant in an ever changing, increasingly competitive and ever growing market. To look around the new club and to see its new facilities we certainly feel that the options available to anyone coming to the club are now so wide and varied that we have taken huge steps to ensuring that Norths is right up there with the best of the clubs and hotels around us and indeed across Brisbane. Whether you wish to have a quiet coffee from Surreal, and sit inside in one of the five lounges or venture outside into any of the outdoor areas around the club, or whether you wish to dine at Char, our new a la carte restaurant and have a table under the sails and enjoy the garden surrounds, or catch up for coffee while the kids play away in the outdoor play area, or maybe it’s a night out with a few friends to sit back in the new bar lounge and have a few quiet ones, or to venture into the new sports bar, shoot some pool, watch a bit of sport on the big screen TVs, play away the night in the new look and spacious gaming lounge – whatever it is Norths now has the offering for you. I have had so many people come up to me over the last few weeks and comment on the new look and so many people comment on the new leather furnishings throughout the club from the brand new leather gaming stools, to the leather lounges at the bar to the leather dining chairs in our restaurant, Char. We have been striving to achieve a high level of comfort across the club but also to combine that with raising the standards of what we provide to all of our patrons and I think in all of the furnishings, indoors and out, we have been

2

successful in doing so and your comments and feedback have been well received and appreciated. Of course even though much has changed the core values and activities within the club remain. All of the rest of the club’s activities such as regular entertainment, promotions, bingo and our dedicated staff with their excellent customer service to look after you when you visit are all still here and ready for your visit. Santa’s Stash of Cash was a lot of fun throughout November and December and congratulations to everyone who took part, especially those who won each week! Over the next few months, to match our grand opening, we will be giving away a sensational Toyota Rav 4, now sitting in the entry foyer. See inside for details of how you could be driving away in this sensational prize! We look forward to seeing you at Norths!

Rochelle Hall (QLD A Rep Mortgage Broker of the Year) Customers now have unlimited choice when it comes to finding a better deal for their home loan, according to Aussie Qld Mortgage Broker of the Year Rochelle Hall. Rochelle says the Federal Government’s decision to eliminate exit fees from loans allows much more flexibility for customers who are seeking a more effective loan structure and lower repayments. Banks are also now under pressure to pass on the Reserve Bank of Australia’s December 6 official cash rate in full. Rochelle says those banks that don’t pass on the cut in full will feel the ire of their customers, who will inevitably turn their attention to other lenders that are more customer-focused. Rochelle has the benefit of being able to deal with 16 lenders and customers will find her team’s personalised customer service is a rare commodity in today’s financial environment. “Personalised customer service as opposed to just simply being a number is the reason our store was the Queensland’s number one store in September this year,” says Rochelle, who has also been nominated for Australia’s 2012 Mortgage Broker of the Year. Those looking for a better deal on their mortgage should contact Rochelle’s personal assistant, Sha Anthonisz, on 07 3889 9544 to arrange a free consultation.

David Campbell ‘Let’s Go Tour’ Friday 6 July 2012 The 1980s gave us more than just big hair, scrunchies and day-glo fashion - it was also the decade that delivered some of the greatest pop songs of all time. Now David Campbell takes us back to the future with his brand new album and tour, LET’S GO, a fun and very funky tribute to the new romantic in all of us. You can see this fantastic performer live at Norths on Friday 6th July 2012, a show not to be missed. Personally for David, LET’S GO represents the missing link in the songs that helped shape him into the singer he is today. “I was schooled in this music,” says David. “This was the time where I was hitting puberty, taping songs off Countdown onto my VHS tape and watching them over and over. For me, it’s primal party music, but with style.” The Style Council’s “Shout To The Top”, John Waites’ “Missing You”, Yazoo’s “Only You”, Spandau Ballet’s “True” - these are the songs that struck an emotional chord with the artist as a young man and provided a

January–February ’12 Norths

counter-balance to the old school swing and Broadway influences David was soaking up from his grandmother’s record collection. As Gran taught David the classics, his mum and aunt fed him a healthy dose of Style Council and Dexy’s Midnight Runners [“Come On Eileen”]. These are the songs that make up the soundtrack to David’s adolescence. “‘A lot of these songs have different memories for me,” he says. “‘Shout To The Top’ I went to my aunt’s engagement party, they put it on the stereo and I was like, ‘Wow, what the hell is that?’ I did my first school dance to ‘True’, for goodness sake,” he laughs. Like the rest of us, David grew up with these songs and has loved them his whole life, but it wasn’t until the idea of making LET’S GO started to formulate that the singer got a true appreciation of the craftsmanship at work in the songwriting from the era. With LET’S GO, David Campbell reinvents the 1980s and makes these classic songs all his own. LET’S GO feels like a party caught on record. And this is just the beginning. David promises there’s a lot more classic songs to come when he performs at Norths in July. So you better iron your Frankie Says Relax t-shirts, get your hair gelled just right, and get ready to GO, GO, GO!! with David Campbell. David Campbell will be performing at Norths on Friday 6th July 2012. Tickets are now on sale from the club reception desk or by phoning 07 3285 2733. Tickets cost $60 per person

Kayaking Bass Strait for Bravehearts Would you paddle in a two-person kayak across Bass Strait, that’s Victoria to Tasmania? Just imagine challenging massive waves, fending off sharks, out in the ocean for 7 days, overcoming personal and physical challenges. Sound extreme? Well come the 14th of March Justin Ribot will join a group of 19 other individuals, attempting to not only cross Bass Strait, but importantly raising awareness and funds for the charity Bravehearts. Some of you would have come across Justin in the Club, his taste for adventure began in 2009 when he joined his father John in completing the Kokoda Trail. Since that time he has completed a number of adventures including this year climbing the 12 highest mountains in Australia over one weekend and nearing completion of the State 8 Challenge, climbing the highest mountain in each state. There are a number of high profile people, including sports stars and experienced paddlers, some of those confirmed include, Brian Freeman, John Jacoby (4 time World Endurance Kayaking Champion), Guy Andrews (3 time Uncle Toby’s Ironman Champion), Steve Willis aka The Commando off the Biggest Loser and Ian Jacobs (3 time World Kick Boxing Champion). Did we mention that Justin has only been in a kayak once in his whole life? Well the group are currently one month into a dedicated four month training program which will ultimately see them ready to conquer the Strait. Starting from Wilson Promontory, Bass Strait provides a number of ideally placed islands at which the group will overnight en-route to Tasmania. In addition, a support vessel with a fully qualified Skipper and a film crew will offer support along the way. Justin has set a goal to raise a minimum of $25,000 for Bravehearts, all of which is fully tax deductable. Bravehearts deals exclusively with children who have

January–February ’12 Norths

been or are at risk of sexual assault, offering specialist counselling and preventative intervention programs. One in five Australian children are victims of this insidious crime – Bravehearts’ programs can reduce this statistic by half! For every $10 raised, you sponsor one child’s access to Bravehearts’ Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure, which teaches them life saving personal safety. The more money raised, the more children that can be protected. So as Justin sets off on this amazing adventure, those wishing to assist can make a fully tax deductible donation through the website www.everydayhero.com.au/paddle_ bass_strait or ask at reception for a donation form or ask Justin himself about his upcoming adventure.

Queenslanders Rally by Rachel Bilsborough On a sunny Sunday morning, in the normally quiet and quaint streets of Brisbane’s Nundah, a crowd of 2,000+ people surged the Norths Devils Leagues Club to fight for our industry. The Save Our Clubs community meeting saw the clubs and pubs of Queensland unite in protest against the Gillard Government’s proposed mandatory precommitment technology. People from all across Brisbane, Greater Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Darling Downs, Mackay, Mt Isa and Cairns came out to the time-honored rugby league club to hear from speakers Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, Norths Devils Chairman Mark ‘Muppet’ Murray, Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie, Minister for Sport and Minister for Child Safety Phil Reeves, entertainer Dean Vegas, Q-Sport CEO Peter Cummiskey, Coolum Surf Life Saving Club President John Ellingsen, Norths Leagues and Services Club HR Manager Nicky Cowan, ClubSAFE Manager Rowan Cameron, and Clubs Australia Chairman Peter Newell. The day proved instrumental in our plight to secure political assurances from all federal and state parties involved. Firstly, Jarrod Bleijie on behalf of the Queensland Liberal National Party (LNP) pledged to fight the federal government’s planned poker-machine reforms all the way to the High Court if they are to win government. Sports Minister Phil Reeves followed Mr Bleijie to tell the crowd that the Bligh Government does not believe the system would cure problem gambling, or have the marginal economic effect the federal government claims. Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott told the crowd that it was his opinion that they should direct their anger at Prime Minister Julia Gillard, not Mr Wilkie. “We have a prime minister who was prepared to sell out the clubs of Australia to keep herself in The Lodge,” Mr Abbott said. “That’s the sad truth about the situation in which we find ourselves today.” “I don’t believe sensible Labor people support this measure,” he said. “I think that this is a measure they have had foisted upon them by a desperate prime minister.” Desperate or not however, our current reality is that the

January–February ’12 Norths

Gillard Government continues to support Wilkie’s reforms and mandatory pre-commitment will therefore continue to threaten our industry, clubs and communities. In the case of our rally hosts, the Norths Devils Leagues Club, Club Chairman and former Origin great Mark “Muppet” Murray openly admitted to the crowd that mandatory pre-commitment would decimate their club and the future support of rugby league juniors. Norths Devils has been the stomping ground for some of Queensland’s finest rugby league stars, playing home to the likes of Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk, Darryl Brohman, Steve Walters and Trevor Gillmeister. And today, the club continues their dedication to rugby league by supporting more than 5,000 junior players. “The Federal Government needs to realise that mandatory pre-commitment would force us to stop funding the junior development program, along with a range of other sports and community programs,” Mark said. We now ask though, that you keep fighting the fight and continue your support of the campaign. Even with the backing of the Federal Coalition, the Bligh Government and state LNP, it is up to us to save our clubs, and our community beneficiaries and the 110,300 staff employed by clubs and pubs in Queensland.

Community toasts to new designated driver campaign The Moreton Bay Designated Driver Program will be re-launched in the Pine Rivers region at Norths on 11th January 2012 commencing at 7am. The Moreton Bay Designated Driver program is a joint initiative of the Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Caboolture Corridor Liquor Industry Action Groups (LIAG) with support from Queensland Health, DRUG ARM, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Queensland Police Service, the Office of Liquor and Gaming, Black and White Cabs and Redcliffe Area Youth Space. The program aims to address the issue of drink driving by supporting and rewarding an allocated designated driver and promoting the disassociation of alcohol and driving. In an effort to curb drink driving, members of the Pine Rivers LIAG will provide free soft drink to designated drivers. Russell Kelly LIAG spokesperson, said designated drivers would be given a wristband and drink card when they register at participating venues allowing them four free soft drinks while at the venue. “We’re trying to encourage safety for our patrons and the community” he said.

The Pine Rivers LIAG will meet in February 2012 to review the success of the program, which is due to start on Wednesday 11/1/2012 at licensed venues across the Pine Rivers region.

Filming began soon after the renovations were complete in early December and the TV advertising campaign will commence on Channel 9 in early January and run through to late February. We spoke to Norths General Manager Stephen Gallacher about the TV ads. “The best way and really the only way we could show the great new facilities at the Club was through the media of TV, it’s a very exciting development for the club” he said. The new commercials will carry the clubs new soundtrack and theme which is “Norths it’s your time”. Stephen Gallacher again. “The TV ads reflect the quality of the Norths venue, it’s now one of the best club venues in Brisbane and our theme is what we want to tell our members and guests. “It’s your time” to enjoy Norths and all it has to offer” he said. The commercial shows how Norths has been transformed and features many of the new facilities such as the
