welcome
This issue marks our 5th birthday! From the very first edition of northsider to the one you hold in your hands today, we‘ve been created for locals, by locals. We’re proud to pack our pages with stories that celebrate the unique character of this very special area we’re lucky enough to live, work and play in - the stunning harbour, the vibrant villages and the people and characters that bring everything to life! None of this would be possible without you – our readers, advertisers, contributors and supporters – so as we celebrate this milestone, we want to say a big thank you for being such a huge part of the northsider story. We can’t wait to continue this journey with you, so here’s to the next five years! Have a safe and fun holiday season and see you in 2024.

Ensemble Theatre Artistic Director, Mark Kilmurry, centre, and the cast and crew of
As we celebrate our fifth year in print, we catch up with some other locals also marking significant milestones
Celebrating 65 years
Kirribilli’s Ensemble Theatre is the longest continuously running professional theatre group in Australia. Its first performance took place in Cammeray in 1958 before moving to its current home in Careening Cove in 1960.
Today, the theatre presents established classics and nurtures and invests in new writers and creatives to bring their work to the stage.
With a vision for ‘theatre for everyone’, Ensemble also works with The Smith Family charity to welcome students from diverse backgrounds to the theatre.
“We have a wonderful week every year where we have acting classes, backstage discussions and Q&As, where students have a chance to talk to the actors,” Ensemble Theatre’s Artistic Director, Mark Kilmurry, says.
“It’s joyous seeing students who may have never been to
the theatre before discovering something special.”
“We have a great team of people here who put on fabulous shows and entertain audiences,” Mark continues. “We do it on a shoestring too, with no regular, on-going funding. The shows may look a million dollars but they cost very much less!”
“Local theatre is hugely important to the community, not just opening the doors to entertain audiences who want to see great plays, but also as communication, of being part of an ongoing relationship with other audience members and art. There’s a sharing going on when you’re in a live space that you don’t get at home watching TV. Seeing a play unfold in front of you is like nothing else. The communication in the room, all witnessing the same moment together, can be life changing.”
Running for 30 years
When personal trainer Susan Griffith put a sign on a noticeboard in St Leonards to see if anyone wanted to join her for a run, she was shocked when 30 willing participants turned up! The Northside Running Group, or NRG, was born and quickly picked up pace. Now, 30 years on, there are 200 members and counting. Catering for all fitness levels,
runs usually start from Crows Nest and take in the parks, bays and foreshores of North Sydney, Cremorne, Mosman, Lane Cove and Willoughby. “We have five runs a week and a very diverse group of runners, from weekend shufflers to ultra marathoners competing in races of several hundred kilometres,” says NRG President, Kim Ryan. “At the end of the day, we’re all just aiming to keep fit and enjoy ourselves.”
Happy 1st birthday Fiore!
McMahons Point’s Italian inspired bakery, Fiore, celebrated its first birthday in 2023. The neighbourhood fave, run by Iggy’s Sourdough alumni, baker Alberto Dal Bosco, and his partner, Sam Dean, has an almost constant queue snaking on to Blues Point Road. If you’re not there early, it’s likely they will have sold out of their house-baked sourdough loaves, which come in a range of varieties from rye to mixed seed and walnut, and tasty sweet treats, which include fluffy Italian donuts.
A sweet 20 years
Chocolatier Rebecca Knights is thrilled to celebrate two decades of delicious innovation at Coco Chocolate in Kirribilli.
An expert in creating with cacao, Rebecca spent time in Europe and trained at the prestigious Valrhona school in Paris before settling into her sweet Bligh Street store.
She uses only organic, ethically-traded ingredients in her hand-tempered chocolate treats and enjoys creating clever flavour combinations, such as her best-selling blend of caramel, pine nut and sea salt. She’s also raised over $12k for Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden through sales of her ‘Garden Series’ chocolate.
“Community is the soul of Coco Chocolate,” Rebecca says. “And I’m excited to continue making locals happy with even more delicious chocolate!”

50 years of fun!
What began in 1973 in a vacant space in North Sydney where children gathered to play has blossomed into something very special at the Explorers Playgroup. Moving to the North Sydney Community Centre in 1974, the Explorers Playgroup has been a memorable place for thousands of families over the past five decades.
“The Playgroup connects parents and encourages children to learn through having fun,“ says Michelle Worthley, Director of the North Sydney Community Centre.
“Countless wonderful stories have unfolded here, creating cherished memories and friendships, and we’re thrilled to celebrate the golden jubilee of a group that’s brought joy to the lives of so many.”
COMMUNITY MATTERS
115 years young
Established in 1908, the North Sydney Bears were one of the founding members of the New South Wales Rugby Football League and one of Australia’s first rugby league clubs.
An unsuccessful merger with Manly saw the team move to the second tier NSW Cup in 2003.
Bids to bring The Bears back to the NRL are gathering pace, especially after the 2023 season, which saw the red and blacks back in the Grand Final, over 100 years since they last won a premiership. They missed out on taking home the cup by just one try.
“For 115 years, the Club has been a part of the fabric of North Sydney, touching generations of fans, far and wide,” says the team’s Wellbeing, Education and Community Manager, former player and coach, Greg Florimo.
“2024 brings a new u/17’s female team of mostly local girls to The Bears, playing in the Lisa Fiaola cup. We’ll have five teams proudly competing in the red and black next season, hopefully improving on the two minor premierships we achieved in 2023.”
“The Bears’ heritage goes beyond games at North Sydney oval,” Greg adds. “We’re built around community and I’m humbled to be a part of growing our great Club.”
Happy 25th birthday
The Northside Produce Market began in 1999, inspired by farmers markets in California.
Turning a quarter of a century in November 2024, the bustling produce hub, which is a major fundraiser for the North Sydney Community Centre, is now one of the longest running markets
in Sydney. Come rain or shine, over 70 growers and artisan producers travel from across NSW to share their goodies with northsiders, every first and third Saturday of the month. “The market is a place of connection,” says market coordinator, Lisa MacDonald. “We’ve got excellent produce from all over NSW, and expert growers and makers at every market. Our stallholders are all so passionate about what they do, you can hear the stories behind their produce and that’s something special to have on our doorstep.”
10 years of tacos!
For the past decade, Neutral Bay’s Southern-Cali inspired restaurant and bar SoCal has been spicing up northsiders’ lives with their signature tacos, flowing margaritas and infamous annual chilli eating competition. They’ve done the math and over those 10 years, we’ve worked our way through 96,000 fish tacos, 20,000 serves of house made guac and corn chips and 84,000 classic margs. Taco about a feast!
“Celebrating 10 years of SoCal in October 2023 was a significant milestone for us,” says venue General Manager, Bárbara Bicalho. “It marked a momentous achievement made possible by the unwavering support of our wonderful northside community. Here’s to the next 10 years!”

FOCUS Summer
Leeanne
Scott and Robert Bulgin from Mortgage Choice
North Sydney are here to help you look forward to the future...
Hands up who’s ready to celebrate the end of 2023? After nearly three years of a pandemic, you’d think the universe would give us a break wouldn’t you?!
But the past year seems to have compounded the stress when it comes to our finances. If you have a mortgage, you’ve faced multiple rate increases. And if you don’t have a mortgage, it’s been tougher than ever to get one.
As we say goodbye to 2023, let’s take some time to celebrate the here and now and look forward to the future.
Summer’s here!
The world really does look better when it’s bathed in sunshine with the smell of barbeques wafting in the air (mixed with a hint of Aeroguard!) Take a breath and enjoy these longer days and balmy evenings.
Time for friends and family
The holiday season means catching up with loved ones, leisurely get-togethers, and, often, a few too many drinks! But it doesn’t matter, because (unless you have toddlers of course) maybe you can sleep-in and skip the commute for a few days.
The winning season
And then there’s the sport...the Boxing Day Test, the New Year’s Test, the Australian Open, the Big Bash and the most important sporting event of all...the Boxing Day Sales!
A fresh start
With the New Year just around the corner, why not take the chance to assess where you are at the end of 2023. Have a think
about where you want to be in 12 months’ time. Re-set your goals, dream new dreams and forge on with renewed hope for 2024.
However you choose to celebrate the end of 2023, the team here at Mortgage Choice North Sydney hope you do something that brings you joy, fun and peace.
We’re taking a few weeks off ourselves, but don’t worry, we’ll be back in time for the new year’s real-estate listings and the arrival of those pesky post-holiday credit card bills.
So when you’re ready, give us a call or send us an email. We’re here to help you make the most of your money and to step into 2024 with finances as fresh as you are after this well-deserved break! l

“There’s something for everyone,” Martine says about her gallery at 44 Sailors Bay Rd, Northbridge. Centre, Martine’s resin seascape work.
THE POWER
How internationally renowned local artist Martine Vanderspuy is using her creativity to raise vital funds for medical research
From immersive aerial seascapes to technicolour glassware, delicate ceramics and much more, the Martine Gallery in Northbridge is a vibrant hub of artistic energy. As well as showcasing over 40 Australian artists, the Sailors Bay Road space is also a catalyst for change. Over the past 10 years, a percentage of sales, combined with fundraising events, have raised $400,000 towards vital research into Mitochondrial (Mito) disease.
It’s a cause close to gallery owner and internationally renowned artist
Martine Vanderspuy’s heart, following her youngest son Tom’s Mito diagnosis.
A debilitating genetic disorder, Mito robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure, and potentially death. The disease affects roughly one in 5000 Australians and there’s currently no known cure.
Martine is on a mission to help try to change that by raising funds and awareness through her art.
As well as working with ink, acrylics and photography, the mum of three is a master of aerial inspired resin art, infusing each piece with the energy of the sea.
“I’m inspired by the ocean, its power, beauty, and tranquility,” Martine, who’s also a director of the Mito Medical Network,
“EVERY TIME YOU START A PIECE, YOU STEP IN TO THE UNKNOWN”
ART of
explains. “This multitude of moods is what I am trying to convey in my painting. I bring the energy of the sea to the viewer and, in turn, I hope to give that energy back to Mitochondrial Disease.”
To ensure all the pieces in the gallery are looking their very best for sale, Martine collaborates with local framing company, Fantastic Framing.
“Frames finish art,” she explains. “They make a big difference and add value to the pieces.”
“I love working with Fantastic Framing,” Martine continues. “The team in North Sydney make everything so easy. They collect the works and deliver them back to the gallery and Lizzie and Amogh are so skilled and creative. They work quickly and to a high standard.”
This support means there’s one less thing on Martine’s logistical to-do list, allowing her to concentrate on using her creative energy as a force for change.
“I work on my art every day,” she says. “Resin has a mind of its own so when you start a piece, you step in to the unknown. The layers and the depth you can achieve allow you to dive into the artwork. I love using that energy to raise awareness of Mito around the world.” l

Oh hey, Cammeray!
Is 2062 Summer’s hottest suburb?
Recently described by the SMH’s Good Food as being the centre of a ‘mini hospo boom’, Cammeray is having a moment. This Summer sees two new venues, modern Italian, Nico, and relaxed bar and bistro, Folly’s, joining contemporary Mexican, Taqueria, innovative Indian, Don’t Tell Uncle, and long-time local legends Maggio’s and hatted Japanese, Sushi Oe to name just a few. So what’s the suburb’s secret ingredient? Northsider investigates what’s cooking in 2062…
“We love Cammeray!”
“What’s happening in Cammeray is very exciting,” says Taqueria’s Emma Read.
“The dining precinct is thriving and there’s real quality in the local neighbourhood.”
Opening in 2022, Taqueria brought a stylish modern Mexican to Cammeray Square. The menu by Chef Luis Zaleta works for date nights as well as relaxed tacos and margaritas after work.
“We love Cammeray,” Emma enthuses.
“Having lived there for 14 years, we have a close personal connection with the suburb and we’re looking forward to more people coming out to discover it.”
“The North is the future”
The very first time Executive Chef Nicola Ronconi and business partner, Ewa Witkowska, came to Cammeray, they knew they’d found the perfect location for their Italian restaurant, Nico. “We knew this was The One as soon as we saw it,” Nicola says. “It’s a beautiful area, close to the city, with a supportive community, and the venue ticked every box.”
Nicola, who trained in fine dining and has worked in restaurants across Europe and Australia, including Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, is serving fresh pastas and innovative takes on Italian classics.
His zesty lemon tiramisu is set to be the sweet of the season, with diners from across Sydney travelling for the dreamy dessert.
“I want people to come here and feel like they’re on holiday,” he enthuses. “I used to think crossing the bridge was too far, but the North’s transforming, it’s becoming a destination...the place to be. The North is the future of hospitality.”
“Cammeray’s an amazing place…”
For Folly’s co-owner, Lachy Sturrock, opening a venue in Cammeray is personal. Growing up nearby, he met business partner and fellow northsider, publican Sam Smith, while working at the now departed Alberts Tavern in North Sydney.
“We’d head to the Belgian Beer Café in Cammeray after work,” Lachy remembers. It’s this exact venue, more recently known as the Public, that the pair have taken over to create their bar and bistro.
“For us, Cammeray’s an amazing place to open our venue,” Lachy continues. “As well as our personal history with the area, there’s so much happening on this side of the bridge. We want to create a real neighbourhood venue, where the team feels like family, and we attract people to Cammeray from all over Sydney.
With a Modern Australian menu, created by Michelin trained, former Icebergs chef, Antonio “Ace” Espiritu, expect dishes such as rigatoni alla vodka made with Australian raw
vodka and cured salmon with salt-baked beetroot and horseradish cream.
Lachy’s experience as group bars manager for Applejack Hospitalty, the team behind RAFI and The Botanist, shines on the must-try cocktail and wine list.
“It’s crazy to think that Sam and I were here 15 years ago, enjoying the half price mussels at Epoque,” he laughs. “I’d never have dreamt we’d be back, in that same space, opening Folly’s. It’s a real pinch me moment.”

“It all comes back to community”
Norths Collective General Manager of Customer Experience, Brand and Innovation, Robert Lopez, lives and works in Cammeray.
“There’s just something special about Cammeray,” Robert says. “We talk about location and convenience and Cammeray offers all of that, but I think it all comes back to community. We’re so fortunate to be part of a community here that’s so close knit and welcoming.”
As well as being the home of the Mighty Bears, Norths on Abbott Street has been a cornerstone of Cammeray for 60 years after moving to the suburb from Neutral Bay in 1963. Robert has been part of the team at Norths for 12 years and has seen the area change a lot in that time.
“The dynamics here have really seen a shift,” he says. “There were a lot of empty nesters and retirees, and it was a drive through suburb for so long. Now, there’s lots more young couples, young professionals and young families and there’s now more reasons than ever to come here.”
“Community’s everything to us at Norths Collective and we want to help the suburb grow but still retain that friendly, local feel. It’s great for people to know they can come here and visit Norths to experience that community in a place you can connect and make memories.” l

Experience Sydney Harbour from a new perspective
Setting sail on the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour is always special. But for northsiders Marty and Lisa Woods, each journey helps keep a piece of maritime history afloat.
The Castlecrag couple own Sydney Harbour Tall Ships and are passionate about preserving the extraordinary vessels for future generations.
Among their fleet is the Søren Larsen, one of the last traditional cargo ships to be built in 1949. She went on to appear in films and TV shows, including The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Shackleton.
“Marty and I actually met when we were both working on Søren Larsen in 1993,” Lisa tells northsider. “We were sailing from the UK to New Zealand and I was the cook and Marty was the skipper.”
When the ship was put up for sale in 2007, the couple, who had by then settled on Sydney’s lower north shore, stepped in.
“We wanted to have our own business, but we weren’t sure what it would be,” Lisa remembers. “Suddenly it just all made sense.”
Another vessel in the couple’s fleet, The Southern Swan, is over 100 years old. Built in Denmark in 1922 to work as a cargo ship in the Baltic Sea, there’s historic evidence to
suggest she may have assisted in evacuating Jews to safety during WWII.
“Ships aren’t built like this anymore,” Lisa says. “They have such rich histories, it’s important to preserve them for years to come.”
The Woods’ tall ships are now berthed in Campbells Cove in The Rocks and offer unique sailing experiences on Sydney Harbour.
“We want to give people the opportunity to touch, feel and experience history, not just look at it,” Lisa continues.
As well as enjoying an unforgettable sail, passengers on the tall ships can hoist the sails and even climb the mast. For those who prefer to set a more relaxing course, there’s no end of sightseeing opportunities from the deck, coupled with refreshments on offer throughout the cruises. For the little tackers, there’s fun, pirate themed family adventures which head out on the hunt for treasure.
“Summer’s the perfect time to be out on the water, enjoying the sunshine and warm evenings with family and friends,” Lisa enthuses. “Sailing on a tall ship is a unique experience, it’s a special way to see Sydney.”
“We always say we don’t own the ships, they own us,” she concludes. “We’re just looking after them until it’s someone else’s turn to continue their stories.” l

Celebration days…
Local foodie, TV presenter and cookbook author Will Stewart shares his berry delicious party treat
Since Summer is the season for celebrations, and northsider is turning five, I thought it would be the prefect time for me to bake a party cake! This is a fave recipe of mine because it’s really easy, sweet, delicious and loaded with fresh berries that should be coming into abundance, down in price and at their absolute best. I’ve made a Chantilly cream for this recipe, but you can use confectioner’s custard if you prefer. A little top tip taught to me by none other than the fabulous Donna Hay is to watch the knife and not the cake when you’re slicing your bake in half to create the layers. The cake may be uneven, but the knife isn’t!
Enjoy a safe and happy celebration season and I’ll see you in 2024,
Lots of love Will x

SWEET SUMMER CELEBRATION CAKE WITH BERRIES AND CREAM
SERVES: 8-10
TAKES: 90 MINUTES (INCLUDING COOLING TIME)
CAKE:
6 eggs
250g caster sugar
90ml warm water
2 tsp baking powder
150g self-raising flour
METHOD:
CREAM AND BERRIES:
600ml thickened cream
4 tbsp icing sugar
2 tsp vanilla bean paste
250g strawberries, some halved, some whole
170g blueberries, left whole 125g raspberries, left whole
• Pre-heat oven to 180C. Line a round cake tin (20cm x 7cm) with baking paper.
• Whisk the eggs with the sugar until light and fluffy - see tip below. Mix the baking powder and flour together, then gently fold into the eggs, making sure to incorporate all of the flour.
• Add the warm water and then stir until combined, trying not to over mix. Pour the cake mix into the prepared tin and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until it has risen, is golden, and set.
• Turn the cake out of the tin and allow to cool on a wire rack.
• Meanwhile, whisk the cream, icing sugar and vanilla bean paste together until the cream holds firm peaks. Cover and store in the fridge until needed.
• When the cake is cold, carefully cut it into three layers. Placing one layer on a serving plate, spoon a third of the cream on to the cake, then add some of the berries.
• Continue to layer the cake this way, ending with the top which is also decorated with cream, strawberries, raspberries and remaining blueberries.
TIP: Be patient when whisking to make sure this part of the mix is really light and fluffy. I used an electric hand whish to whisk my eggs for 10-12 minutes to get to the desired consistency.

Meet the local on a mission to reduce plastic waste, one milk bottle at a time...
If you’re awake in the early hours of a Friday in North Sydney, you might just hear something surprising. In an echo of days gone by, when the milkman would do his rounds by dawn, the gentle tinkle of glass milk bottles is back on the northside. This burst of doorstep nostaliga is all thanks to McMahons Point local, Dominic Ryan, and his innovative plastic-free grocery delivery service, Restore.
Plastic use has been a long time concern for Dominic, who’s shocked by the overwhelming presence of single-use plastic both in our bins at home and washing up on the harbour foreshore. In 2023, he reached out the community to see if others felt the same.
“The response was overwhelming,” Dominic says. “We discovered that 95% of locals are also concerned about plastic packaging and we also found that people are feeling a bit powerless when it comes to plastic use too. We all want to do the right thing and avoid plastic but products, such as fresh milk, are only really available in plastic at the supermarket. Often it’s plastic or nothing.’
Inspired by his findings and encouraged by the community, Dominic started Restore, a grocery delivery service with an entirely plastic-free supply chain. His first focus is on dairy products.
“We provide plastic-free, low-waste, fresh milk and yoghurt in reused glass containers, delivered right to your door,” Dominic explains. “When you’re done, we collect the containers for refilling and return.”
Doorstep nostalgia
Dominic
Dominic spent time researching farms to find the best quality milk and has teamed up with an independent, Australian family-owned and operated Jersey cow farm on the NSW South Coast. Their milk is pasteurised and un-homogenised, meaning the cream settles on top naturally.
“It arrives in North Sydney from the farm on a Thursday and it’s super fresh,” Dominic says. With an oat milk option and further delivery locations around the lower north
“WE DISCOVERED THAT 95% OF LOCALS ARE ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT PLASTIC PACKAGING”
shore on the horizon, Dominic’s mission to help reduce local plastic waste by an ambitious 3,000kg in the next year is closer to becoming a reality.
“The support from the community has been outstanding,” he says. “People have told me that they’re drinking more milk now, and that the kids are asking for milk instead of juice too.”
“In our grandparents’ day, there was no such thing as single use plastic. We’ve looked to the past to see how things were done and we’re simply restoring what we once had,” he concludes. l

northsider’s ‘rover’ reporter Ted the Puggle chats to Pi, the 29-day-old Grey-headed Flying Fox
“I’M TEACHING MYSELF TO FLY!”
Ted: Hi Pi! I’ve never met a Flying Fox before. Why are you living with humans?
Pi: My mum had taken me foraging with her and one of our trees was near the human power lines. Mum touched them by accident. She was electrocuted and sadly she died. Someone spotted me clinging to her and reported me to Sydney Wildlife Rescue. That’s when my carer Charmian rescued me.
T: Oh I’m sorry Pi, that’s so sad
P: Before my mum died, we lived in a beautiful camp of paperbark trees. It’s lovely there, high up in the canopy. I’d nestle in my mum’s wings or lie on her stomach to have a sleep in the sun.
T: What’s life like now?
P: Charmian tries to emulate my real mother’s routine as best she can. Instead of
a wing, I’m wrapped in a mama roll – it’s soft fabric wrapped around me to make me feel secure. Sometimes I hang from Charmian and snuggle inside her hoodie. It’s not as soft as a wing, but it helps me feel calm. She gives me baths and bottles and I get brushed, washed and cleaned. Then I’m either wrapped up again for a snooze, or I’m allowed in my playground, which has toys for me to hang from and cuddle. I practice clambering, wing clapping and flapping as I’m teaching myself to fly!
T: Will you go back to your habitat?
P: Yes, I will go back. Charmian calls it release. But I’ll have to go to baby bat créche first. All us orphans living with humans go to school to practice our flying and learn language and etiquette from older bats. When the humans think we’ll be able to find our own food, they’ll let us out to fly above the trees again.
T: Tell us about Sydney Wildlife Rescue’s work
P: They make life better for sick and injured wildlife. Their amazing members, who are all volunteers, try to help native species like me get back to our homes. Sometimes our medicines and treatments cost a lot of money so I hope they don’t give up.
T: What are the other flying foxes like?
P: The others are super cool, I admire them all. I mean who else is able to perform the unique ecological role that we do? We’re what’s known as a keystone species.
We pollinate the hard wood trees and help the ecological diversity of forests by planting seeds. What other mammal can fly like us? Plus Grey-headed Flying Foxes are only found in Australia. We’re precious and our numbers are dwindling. Hundreds of our mums are being electrocuted. We need to petition to have the electricity wires bundled together to keep my kind safer as we’re listed as vulnerable to extinction. Relatively soon we could cease to exist and that could mean our forests die.
T: What should people do if they find a native animal needing help?
P: Whatever you do, don’t touch any of us! Call Sydney Wildlife Rescue, or another wildlife rescue organisation, asap. The people on the phone will tell you exactly what to do next.
T: What animals should we look out for?
P: Baby bats on powerlines and flying foxes caught in netting. Also keep an eye out for any animal not in its normal habitat, like seeing a possum in the day, for example.
T: How can people help Sydney Wildlife Rescue?
P: By volunteering and fundraising. They’d love for more people to join the team and fundraising is fundamental to the work they do. Charmian says they need help on the phonelines to help coordinate rescues. If you volunteer, you get training and it would only be a few hours a week. I know creatures like me would be so grateful for your help. l
Animal MATTERS
with Pet Medical Milsons Point’s Dr Jo-Ann Chan BVSc I believe that quality veterinary care is integral in strengthening the animalhuman bond between pets and their owners.
Too much fun in the sun can result in serious heat stress for our furry friends. Unlike us, dogs can’t sweat to remove excess body heat, so it’s our job to help them keep cool this season.
Some common causes of heat stress include:
• Lack of access to water.
• Exercising during extreme heat.
• Being locked in cars.
Here are my top three tips to help keep your dogs cool this summer
• Create a ‘splash zone’ where pooches can go to cool off. A kiddie pool with some shallow, fresh water is perfect for this!
• Treat your doggos to a canine cocktail by adding ice cubes to their water bowls.
• Always check the temperature and enjoy walkies during sunrise or sunset.
Remember, shade and hydration are your dog’s best friends this summer. So keep it cool and let the good times roll! l

GOALS KICKING
Northsider first met mates Brian, 74, left, and Eric, 84, in 2019, when we found out about their soccer team for the over 60s, Alive n’ Kicking. Here, we catch up with Brian about his medal win at the recent Soccer World Cup...
When it comes to staying active over 60, northside locals Eric Anderson and Brian Moran are determined not to sit on the sidelines.
Five years ago, the pair were having a coffee and mulling over their love of soccer when they came up with the idea of starting a team for the over 60s who wanted to continue playing the beautiful game.
The pair created Alive n’ Kicking and within a week of kicking off their squad, 35 prospective players had already expressed interest in joining.
A simple set of rules was devised, playing either half-pitch, or full pitch with small goals, over 60 mins with two breaks. To prevent body contact there was to be no tackling from behind or from the side.
Their first game took place at Northbridge Oval, courtesy of Willoughby Council, and soon their team sheet was fully subscribed.
Not content with just their weekly training sessions, the Alive n’ Kicking players started to enter national and international competitions too.
In 2023, Brian and three members of the team headed to Chiang Mai in Thailand to take part in the World Cup 70 Plus as part of the Oldyroos international team.
They played eight games in five days and reached the third-place playoff against Taiwan, which, as with any good Aussie soccer game, came down to nail biting penalties.
“We were level and then the other team’s sixth player missed his shot at the goal,” Brian, who plays left full back or mid field,
“NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS WOULD I HAVE THOUGHT I’D BE WINNING A MEDAL AT A WORLD CUP AT THE AGE OF 74!”
says. “I stepped up next and scored! The guys on my team were ecstatic.”
Brian and the Oldyroos were thrilled to take home the tournament’s bronze medal, an incredible achievement for Australian international soccer.
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d be playing soccer internationally and winning a medal at a World Cup at the age of 74!” laughs Brian, who was the oldest player to score a penalty in the tournament.
Back home on the lower north shore, Brian is looking to bring Alive n’ Kicking to more footie fans with a potential new chapter on the Northern Beaches.
“Membership just kept building and building through word of mouth in Northbridge,” he says. “There’s now 160 players signed up and around 100 of them are active members, with a large number training and playing regularly on Thursdays.”
“I think while you can still play, why stop?” Brian adds. “I’ve loved football my whole life
and while I’ve still ‘got it’, I’ll keep playing. For so many of the team, keeping active, having the opportunity to kick a ball about and have a laugh together is a highlight of the week. My wife says we’ve created the men’s shed for footballers!” l

Moments in time
In this issue, we thought we’d take a little look back over the past five years of northsider magazine! Our very first issue came out in Summer 18/19 and since then, we’ve published 20 editions of this local, independent magazine, missing just one copy during Covid lockdown. Each issue is created by a team of two North Sydney locals, Anna and Belinda, who just love sharing stories about this special area. In the first year of the magazine, this passion was recognised in the Mumbrella publishing industry awards, when northsider was shortlisted for Print Launch of the Year. We hope you love the magazine as much as we love creating it! l
Local’s last word.
Photographer Alina Shybishi lives in Kurraba Point with husband Andy, cat, Moe, and dog, Maeve.
My fave place for coffee is... Berkelo in Mosman. They have the best fresh bread and pastries. My go to is avo toast with pickled vegetables. Andy’s favourite is At Neutral, he orders a pulled pork burger and large oat flat white. And we both love 5 Loaves 2 Fish in Neutral Bay.
The best meal we’ve had in the area was at…Glorietta. I discovered it through the Savour event and their pizza is so good - the salami with a dash of hot honey is my favourite. I love their interiors and the outdoor area too.
Our fave local takeaway is… Agha Grill at Neutral Bay. My go-to is their chicken shish skewer and Andy loves their kebab.
If we’ve got guests in town... we’d start at Frenchy’s Café. They have an amazing
If we want to have a beer or a wine, we go to… Bamfords Kirribilli. They have lovely drinks and are dog friendly!
outdoor area, lovely food and are next to some amazing harbourside hikes. Next, we’d head to Taronga Zoo, and we’d end up at Chico’s Mexican in Kirribilli.
Our fave local spots for our pets include…Flat Rock Gully Walking Track followed by Tunks Park. We also love Sirius Cove, Anderson,
Reid and Forsyth Parks. My ideal day in the area would consist of…exploring something new! I work as a freelance photographer so every chance I get, I go location scouting. I pinpoint the map and we explore even more amazing cafés, parks, and places in this area. The secret spot I love to go to is…definitely Kurraba Reserve. A lovely dog friendly park right on the Harbour. If you have a kayak there’s a ramp to get into the water and if you’re lucky, you might see some little penguins. The thing about living in this area we love the most is… how close to the city yet how peaceful and quiet it is.
The words I’d use to describe this area are... tranquil, picturesque and sociable.
