welcome

We love it when readers tell us they’ve met our intrepid delivery team, the amazing JJ and Tres, while they’re out and about letterboxing the latest issues. They’ve always got a smile and a joke and we’ve heard stories from you about them lending a hand to locals they’ve met on their northside travels too. Belinda and I used to deliver every single copy of northsider ourselves (yep, that was us with the back packs up and down the hills!) so we’re really REALLY happy to have the legends that are JJ and Tres on our team, helping us get every issue into all of the 11 suburbs we now cover. If you see the guys, give them a wave! From all of us here at northsider, have a happy and healthy Christmas and here’s to a fabulous 2023.

In the

Garden

northsider explores the magic of Wendy Whiteley’s

Secret Garden…

Australian artworld royalty Wendy Whiteley has cultivated her not-so-secret Secret Garden in Lavender Bay for 30 years, galvanised into action by the grief of losing husband Brett, followed by daughter Arkie. Grown, initially, without permission on land owned by Railcorp at the foot of her house, the 81 year old guerrilla gardener and her team of green thumbs and volunteers have turned an overgrown dump into a lush, harbourside haven. To mark the release of new book, A Year With Wendy Whiteley, we’ve spoken to some of those who treasure the garden as much as Wendy does…

THE CREATOR

We spoke to Wendy Whiteley in our 2019/20 Summer issue. This is what she told us about her garden.

One day I went out and began tackling the overgrowth. It was a messy green lump of land. I didn’t know what was there. I couldn’t see shape or form. It was a rubbish dump overgrown by weeds. There was lantana and sticky weed…it was hard work but I had a vague idea it would be ok. It was a mess I could clean up. I never asked for permission, and no one told me to stop… they all thought I was a bit nuts I think! But as I made progress, there was pure amazement. People would ask me how far I was going to go. I’d always reply that I was going as far as I can! It was very satisfying to see the transformation. Of course, it’s still a work in progress. And I’m not someone who starts a job and doesn’t finish it. There’s no halfway. I knew nothing about gardening back then. I worked by eye and instinct. I’d consider leaf form, colours, shapes… It’s a garden of the imagination. I think that’s why people love it so much.

“...I’M NOT SOMEONE WHO STARTS A JOB AND DOESN’T FINISH IT. THERE’S NO HALFWAY”

THE GARDENER

Corrado Camuglia has worked in Wendy’s Secret Garden for almost 25 years.

I was working as a tiler on a property in Lavender Bay when I saw Wendy weeding one day. As a Sicilian, I like a chat, so I asked her if she had any jobs for me...as a joke. As well as tiling in the day I had a pizza restaurant, it wasn’t that I was looking for work! She said yes straight away and she asked me to do a couple of days…Back then she hadn’t started all this, she only wanted the front done…I didn’t know when I started that

Wendy’s Secret Garden
“YOU’VE GOT THE BREEZE FROM THE HARBOUR... THE SUN GOING THROUGH THE TREES. IT’S MAGIC”

Wendy’s the type of person, she keeps going, she doesn’t stop! So a couple of days turned into a couple more and it kept extending. We worked 10 hours a day non-stop. I used to go home and Wendy would keep going until dark. She’s a workaholic. It’s a passion.

At the beginning, we cleared. It was heavy work, there were no steps. We used blankets to pull big rocks up the hill. This land was a tip. If you dug down you’d find fibro, glass, car tyres, builders’ rubble…we moved at least two trucks of bottles.

We planted seedlings shops couldn’t sell, plants that were root bound, off cuts, things Wendy bought - we took what we could get.

I love Summer in the garden. You’ve got the breeze from the harbour, you’ve got the sun going through the trees. It’s magic. If I’m a bit upset about something, I come and sit underneath the big coral tree and it calms me.

THE OVERSEAS VISITOR

Sylvia Cooper lives in Wales and visits Sydney every year to see her son in McMahons Point. My husband Ronnie and I love to walk along Lavender Bay and into Wendy’s Secret Garden. It’s a special place to visit and we always look forward to seeing the beautiful trees after our long flight. We’ve really missed being there over the past few years because of Covid. I got a wonderful surprise when my son bought me a Tasmanian fern for my birthday during the pandemic to remind me of the garden. It’s grown so much and gets extra TLC as we have to wrap it in Winter because of the weather in Wales. I can’t wait to see the garden again when I’m in Sydney in January. I’m looking forward to comparing ferns!

The garden brings people so much joy. I’ve seen a lot of people cry with excitement when they see it. But if you like things that are perfect, with everything in line, then it’s not for you!

Some people think Wendy’s crazy for doing this, for spending her money. But you can spend it on what you like. You can’t take it with you. If you like something, do it, it’s you. Do what you love. The garden is Wendy. It’s what she wants to do and she does good for other people. She does it because she loves it.

THE VOLUNTEERS

Lavender Bay local Ian Curdie has co-ordinated the garden’s team of volunteers for 12 years. The volunteers usually meet on the first Saturday of the month and I like them to do whatever they most enjoy, so they’ll want to return. Some weed, trim, rake the paths, carry and spread mulch…it’s a nice way to connect with local residents and help to preserve this unique environment.

Wendy has no plan, she tries things out, sees how they go. The garden is therapy, a magical place, a living work of art.

The state government has granted a lease to North Sydney Council over the land for 30 years with an option to extend for another 30 years. But it’s not a national park and leases can be altered. This land needs to be loved or else it will revert to nature or be taken over by commerce, which would exclude the public. Locals and anyone who appreciates the garden and wants it to remain in the public domain can volunteer their time to maintain it and be ready to come to its defence if required.

The garden is a gift to anyone who comes and sees it. We should be grateful for that.

THE FUNDRAISER

Owner and head chocolatier at Kirribilli’s Coco Chocolate, Rebecca Knights collaborated with Wendy on a range of chocolate to raise funds towards the garden’s upkeep.

Wendy’s Secret Garden has always had a special place in my heart. When my kids were little, we’d walk over and they’d do finger paintings and drawings at the tables hidden among the trees. It’s an inspiring place. When you’re there your mind wanders to people you’d like to wander the garden with and I visit often.

Wendy’s story is so poignant and she’s given so much to the community, I wanted to do something to give back to her garden. I had an idea to create a special range of chocolate inspired by the works of Wendy’s late husband, celebrated artist Brett Whiteley. The flavours of the bars are matched to some of Brett’s most iconic artworks.

After many hours in Wendy’s kitchen, taste-testing, we had the perfect combinations. Every sale of our Secret Garden Series chocolate contributes to the garden and so far, we’ve raised over $10,000. It’s a lovely thing to know we’re able to give back to this special place.

Ellie May Richardson and husband Arash on their wedding day

THE HAPPY COUPLE

Cammeray local Ellie May Richardson owns Ellie May’s Nook on Miller Street. She married husband Arash in the garden in October 2022. I discovered Wendy’s Secret Garden when I moved to Sydney from Adelaide around eight years ago. My mum has beautiful plants in her garden at home so I’d go down to Lavender Bay whenever I felt homesick. Nothing grabs you like the garden. When I’m here, I’m safe, it’s a sanctuary. It’s so quiet and peaceful, a world away from the chaos of Sydney. When you look up you always see something new and beautiful, whether it’s the canopy of green, the sky, the stars…I always leave feeling balanced.

I come to the garden at least once a week – with friends, with picnics, to exercise and on my own – and I tell people about it all the time. I want everyone to share in this experience. When I met Arash, he’d never heard of the garden! It was amazing to be able to introduce him to it.

I didn’t realise you could get married there, actually right in the middle of the trees. It felt ethereal and was the perfect venue for the perfect day. Wendy has spent so much effort, time and energy creating this public space. She’s shared something with us which is so special and personal. You never feel alone here and are totally at peace. It’s truly magical.

For the love of

FAMILY

Business is a family affair for these locals...

Home is definitely where the heart is for Wendy and Marilyn Nohra. And the pair can’t wait to have you over to theirs to show you why. You’ll find the mother daughter team in the kitchen at Mum and Dad’s Place, an informal Middle Eastern eatery on Hayes Street, Neutral Bay.

Marilyn, or Maz to regulars at Thelma and Louise, the iconic waterfront café she owns with business partner Anne Marie Power, was inspired to open the new venue thanks to a constant craving for Mum’s cooking after a long day in the kitchen.

“I always pine for a home cooked meal,” she tells northsider. “You can’t beat the comfort of home cooking. I thought I’d love to have a local that offers that love, warmth and, of course, that food!”

So when Ta Ta Thai closed, she got on the phone to Mum to make that dream come true.

“Marilyn responds to challenges with ease and fun,” Wendy says. “I love that she sees life

“MUM GUIDED ME THROUGH OBSTACLES AND LAUGHED AT ME WHEN I WENT A LITTLE NUTS!”

as beautiful and not something we should take advantage of. I’m here to hold her hand. As a mother, that’s what it’s all about.”

“We’ve cooked together since I was a child,” Marilyn continues. “And when I went into business, Mum guided me through obstacles… and laughed at me when I went a little nuts!” “Working together can be challenging. But it’s also safe. We can shout and laugh together, just let loose. There’s a beautiful safety net in a mother daughter relationship like ours. The first word that flows from my mouth when things get tough is “Mum” and she always answers. You know someone’s got your back.”

Drawing on family recipes handed down through generations, the pair combine traditionally inspired cuisine with a generous serve of Lebanese hospitality.

Think bowls of creamy hummus, Gedos spiced fish with sumac and tahini and housemade Lebanese sausages with pomegranate BBQ sauce and caramelised onions. Desserts include sticky baklava and semolina cakes soaked in orange blossom.

“Everyone can feel at home here,” Marilyn explains. “Come from the beach with the kids or the grandkids, sit outside in the sun, come in with sandy feet, grab hot chips or settle in for the evening…we show love with our food and I want everyone to experience that.

“My mum inspires me daily. Family is her priority and she has an unconditional love and dedication to food. I hope locals feel that when they come here.”

And after spending long hours together in the kitchen, Marilyn and Wendy have some advice for northsiders seeing family over the holidays. “Cherish all those memories,” they both agree. “Be present, practice gratitude and eat, love and laugh. Life is beautiful!”

Sister act

Mum and daughter

Sisters Jaqueline and Natalie Sita own Beauty On Cliff, Milsons Point, a unique salon specialising in facials, massage, waxing and spray tans along with spirituality, tarot readings, energy cleanses and crystals.

“Our dream was to always have our own beauty salon. We studied at beauty school and worked in the industry together before opening Beauty on Cliff in 2015. As teenagers we’d do beauty treatments on our friends at home and call it the ‘Sita Salon’. Our clients are always shocked at how well we work as a team. Lots say they couldn’t do it with their siblings! We couldn’t do it with anybody else. Even after a 12 hour day you’ll find us sharing a glass of wine and a meal together. With every set back or charge forward we become stronger, better businesswomen. It’s inspiring to do that with your sister.”

Jade Nguyen, right, and her mum Mai La, have worked together in the beauty industry for over 10 years. Together, they run JB Nails and Beauty in McMahons Point.

“Mum has helped me a lot over the years” Jade says. “I inspired her to learn about nail art and beauty treatments and we love working together every day. She encourages me and helps get me and the business organised. I’ve learnt so much from Mum and I think we’ve really grown together. Family is what life’s all about.”

Couple goals

Husband and wife team Serene and Dennis Saw have worked at their restaurant, LUHO in Crows Nest for four years. “Dennis has always dreamt of owning a restaurant and it’s been immensely fun and satisfying starting LUHO together as a couple. Day to day things can be very exhausting but the restaurant is like our baby. It’s important to communicate and trust each other and to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Of course, Dennis cooks up delicious food so that’s an added bonus for me! Share some good food with the family these holidays. Full bellies mean happy memories.”

CO-PARENTING

in holiday season

Five essential tips from North Sydney’s specialist Family Lawyer, Gabriella Pomare

Separation is a stressful and challenging time for couples who are navigating a new journey in their lives. Being separated over Christmas and working out who will have the children over the holidays is often a difficult decision. Here are some simple strategies that can help... Connect via tech

Technology is a helpful resource to keep families informed and communicative. Shared calendars are some of the best tools to use during busy school holiday periods. Various online calendars or phone applications allow parents to share their personal schedules and each child’s schedule. They also offer the ability to share photos, updates and achievements. Applications to try include Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, OurFamilyWizard and 2 Homes. Make arrangements as early as possible To avoid unnecessary conflict, plan in advance. It’s so important children know what to expect ahead of the school break and festive period so they can come to terms with any change. Put agreements in writing where possible to help minimise conflict once the holidays start as last minute arguments cause stress, especially for the kids.

Learn to compromise

Traditions may change and parents need to work around what’s best for their individual children. It’s important to pick and choose battles to avoid unnecessary conflict

regarding events and celebrations. Communicate calmly and be constructive. Factor in practicality and travel commitments and remember, children pick up on how their parents communicate and make decisions. Use your support network and spend time with your family

It’s often a hard adjustment being alone during the festive season so reach out to loved ones. It’s okay to need help and comfort when your children are with their other parent. Be mindful when gift giving

It’s often beneficial for children to see their parents working as a team when it comes to gift giving. Have open communication about what you’re purchasing and avoid competitive gifting to ensure children are not placed in the middle of conflict.

Separated parents may not wish to interact or may have differing parenting styles. However, when it comes to the wellbeing of kids, particularly during the holidays, it’s paramount to put differences aside and encourage a cordial working relationship. Seeing parents getting along during the holidays is often the best gift for children, so work on open, effective communication.l

There’s something special about a fresh, barbequed chicken. Spatchcocking the bird means that it can be cooked easily on the BBQ and your local butcher should be able to help if you don’t feel confident trying it yourself. I’ve served this dish on a corn hummus inspired by

Elote, a Mexican street food of barbequed corn with flavours of warm chilli and zesty lime. I’ve pickled some veg to complement it, the sweet and sour flavours nicely cutting through the richness of the hummus. Leftover pickles can be stored in an airtight jar in the fridge and extra hummus is great in sandwiches or wraps. Enjoy!

ELOTE INSPIRED CORN HUMMUS:

1 x 400g can of cannellini or butter beans

1 x 420g can of chickpeas

1 x 420g can of sweetcorn

1/8 tsp chilli powder

2 cloves of garlic

1 lime, juiced

¼ cup olive oil

Salt and pepper

PICKLES:

Vegetables:

1 small bunch of Dutch carrots, halved lengthways

1 small bunch of radishes, quartered 2 eschalots, quartered lengthways

¼ red cabbage, shredded

TO SERVE:

BBQ corn cobs

Simple pickling liquid:

900ml water

600ml white vinegar

1 cup white sugar

1 tsp fennel seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp black peppercorns

2 bay leaves

1 cinnamon stick

1 star anise

Fresh parsley, leaves picked and roughly chopped

Got a cooking question, local recommendation or idea you’d like to see me rustle up in the northsider kitchen? Drop me a line at hello@northsider. com.au!

METHOD:

• Begin by making the pickles. Put all the simple pickling liquid ingredients into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Turn off the heat. Place all the vegetables in a large bowl then strain the liquid over them to cover and begin pickling. Set aside to cool and discard the aromats.

• Mix melted butter with minced garlic.

• Heat the BBQ to a medium heat and cook the chicken for 10 minutes, turning regularly and basting with the garlic butter until golden and slightly charred. After 10 minutes move the chicken away from the direct heat breast side up and close the lid of your BBQ. Cook for 35 mins or until the juices run clear when the

chicken is pierced with a knife. Remove from the heat, cover and rest for 10 minutes.

• To make the hummus, place ingredients into a food processor and blitz until to your preferred consistency. Season to taste with salt and pepper. I like to keep the texture quite rustic but simply add more olive oil, or water, for a smoother consistency.

• Serve the chicken on a bed of the hummus with a side of the pickles. Perhaps with some barbequed corn cobs and fresh pita or flat breads. Just delicious.

To spatchcock your chicken, place the bird breast side down on a chopping board. Using strong kitchen scissors, remove the spine out by cutting along either side of it down the length of the chicken. Turn the bird over and with a flat hand, press down firmly to break the wishbone and flatten.

On the WATERFRONT

A glimpse behind the scenes at Kirribilli’s harbourside gem

Nestled on a hidden curve of the harbour and overlooking Careening Cove, Jim Birch’s ‘office’ has one of the best views in Sydney. The Ensemble Theatre’s Front of House Manager has been serving the arts for over 30 years at the McDougall Street venue. “It’s beautiful both in the day and at night,” Jim says of the view from the theatre’s windows. “You can’t help but reflect on the work of the people who started the theatre. The effort to get it up and running. It’s our responsibility to put on the best productions we can.”

Jim’s Foyer Bar, named after the man himself to mark his long-term service, is the buzzy hub of the theatre where the audience gathers before and after a show, and the quiet sanctuary where actors and directors share notes off stage.

“The landscape changes every six weeks or so,” Jim says. “There’s new actors, new material, it’s all change. It’s amazing to see the progress of a show and be part of that.”

“IT’S AMAZING TO SEE THE PROGRESS OF A SHOW”

Jim himself harbours no ambitions to tread the boards. In fact, he’d never been to the Ensemble before working there.

“I was in The Navy and came to live in Kirribilli when I left,” Jim remembers. “I walked past the theatre and wondered what went on inside. So I left my name at the door in case there was any work going.” The rest, as they say, is history. “The theatre is a bit like working on a ship,” Jim continues. “There’s a crew on both and it’s very collaborative work.”

Over the years Jim has seen thousands of theatre goers pass through the doors.

“People who were dating when I started here are now bringing their children,” he says. “The one constant is the theatre. It means so much to people and we’re so lucky to have it.”

As well as his selected range of Hungerford Hill wines, Jim is known for his bespoke cocktail creations. This Summer, it’s a bubbly invention celebrating the production of A Christmas Carol, which features John Bell as Scrooge.

The Dickens combines prosecco, Tasmanian elderberry, fresh mint and fresh lime.

“Dry and minerally with hints of pears and apples, it’s a bit of a twist on a classic spritz,” Jim says. We’ll see you at the bar! ●

A FRESH APPROACH

northsider serves up a glimpse of RAFI, North Sydney CBD’s newly hatted restaurant

Whether you pull up a seat in the plush light-filled dining room or bag yourself a spot on the sun-soaked terrace, the North Sydney skyline is the perfect side dish to new foodie hotspot RAFI’s dining experience.

And yes, northsiders, the rumours are true. Just like its well-loved neighbour, modern Italian, Glorietta, RAFI is open on a Saturday. Could this be the start of things to come for Sydney’s second CBD?

Patrick Friesen, Head of Culinary for Applejack Hospitality, certainly thinks so.

“North Sydney is a glorious suburb that’s been overlooked for too long,” he tells us. “We’re serving light, healthy food that allows you to have lunch and make it back into the office, or, better still, have lunch and stay till dinner.”

The venue comes to Mount Street thanks to the team behind northside faves, The Botanist Kirribilli, which recently celebrated its 10th birthday, and SoCal Neutral Bay, the Palm Springs-inspired taco and margarita joint.

“The menu at RAFI reflects the way we eat on the Sydney Coast,” Patrick explains. “Think fresh sourdough, dips, heaps of simple, seasonal vegetables and sustainable seafood and meat cooked over charcoal. It’s food that’s perfect to have with chilled wines, sunny days and good friends.”

Executive Head Chef Matias Cilloniz comes to the kitchen from Central restaurant in Peru, which nabbed second spot at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards. At RAFI he’s serving up tapas-style small plates of sustainably sourced seafood, meats and vegetables as well as a range of fresh, raw dishes. It means you can create your own dining combinations, sampling a range of flavours during your visit that could include wholemeal pitta with hummus, crispy chickpeas and green chilli; a roasted baby cauliflower with romesco and parmesan; and crispy eggplant with chilli, spice and organic honey. Move on to grilled Murray cod fillet with rocket and pepita pesto, roast chicken with spring onions and

broad beans or BBQ South Coast octopus with chilli, oregano and lemon.

When it comes to drinks, expect to see Aussie wines and fruit driven, seasonal cocktails with a twist.

“Our wine list has a strong representation of local producers,” says Lachy Sturrock, Applejack Group Bars Manager. “We have some well-known wineries sitting alongside up and coming producers and more obscure varietals for those with a curious taste.”

One of the cocktails, the ’Riff Raff’, is made using a clarified cordial that’s created in-house using unwanted mint leaves and stems and lime juice and husks from other Applejack venues around Sydney.

“Myself and RAFI’s bar manager Cameron noticed one of the key ingredients behind a bar is mint. We looked to use this in a modern way for the opening list at RAFI while reducing overall wastage across our group.”

Mixed with Four Pillars Modern Australian Gin and Regal Rogue Daring Dry Vermouth, it hits the table looking like a classic Gin Martini, but drinks more like a Southside.

Talking Dentistry

This summer Dr Andrew See talks worn down teeth. He combines passion, artistic flair and extensive knowledge of dentistry to answer any questions you may have and has advanced training in aesthetic and implant dentistry.

Patient question: “My teeth have been worn down for some time, is there anything I can do about it because when I smile they look so short?”

Dr See says: I get asked about this all the time and I wish I had the whole Northsider Magazine to write about this one! Tooth wear is becoming endemic in nature, that is, we are seeing that it is becoming the new ‘normal’ in Sydney.

The biggest reason for tooth wear is from grinding or clenching of teeth and this can be whilst we sleep or while we are awake. Stress and anxiety is the number one reason that causes pathological grinding and clenching. Let’s be real here, every household in Sydney over the last few years is experiencing stress and anxiety, whether it is forced lockdowns, working from home, rising cost of living, rising interest rates or traffic. Stress is probably here to stay.

However, when teeth become worn down it often results in a smile that shows very little teeth. This can be difficult to fix as all the teeth are usually worn down and that means all the teeth need to be restored back to the normal shape and size.

Let’s look at a case that we completed to treat short looking front teeth. Paula wanted to improve the size of her front teeth, close the gap and make them whiter. We used specalised instruments to analyse precisely the proportions of her teeth and to help us decide which treatment was appropriate for her.

To achieve the ideal result that was harmonious with her facial aesthetics, we recontoured the gum and built up all her worn teeth back to normal size.

THE PROBLEMS

• Short teeth when she smiled

• Advanced tooth wear

• Gap in-between her front two teeth

THE SOLUTION

• Recontouring the gum with crown lengthening and laser

• Teeth whitening

• 10 x porcelain veneers

Paula’s smile now is more balanced and harmonious. Advanced qualifications and experience ensured we achieved the results that Paula wanted. Visit www.advanceddentistrysydney.com.au for more information.

THE KIRRIBILLI NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE

Ted the Puggle chats to two-year-old Siberian Husky X, Denali, one of the doggies waiting for their forever home at Monkia’s DoggieRescue

‘I didn’t know what love was’

Ted: How did you come to live at Monika’s DoggieRescue?

Denali: I was born in a hoarding situation with many other huskies. None of us had ever been shown any love or kindness and we had to fight for food. Sometimes I didn’t have any dinner. Life was scary. I was very thin and dirty and didn’t know what love was. But just before Christmas last year, we were rescued! Monika saved about 30 of us and that’s when my life changed. It was the first time I had a warm bed, soft blankets, kind words and gentle pats. And…CHICKEN... OMG…chicken…yum.

T: Tell me about Monika...

D: Monika makes me feel calm and relaxed. She’s so kind and gentle. She started saving dogs about 30 years ago and quickly realised lots of animals were desperate for a place to stay while they found a forever home.

Since then, Monika has saved over 13,000 doggies and hundreds of other homeless pets. All of the animals she rescues are due to be euthanised, so often it’s a hard decision on how many she can take. The more of us that get adopted and find families, the more space Monika has at the rescue and the more lives she can save. That’s why it’s so important to adopt, don’t shop.

T: Is the rescue busy?

D: Christmas is the busiest time. The pounds are full and people are returning pets they adopted during Covid. As well as us doggies, there are lots of cats who are homeless too. Cute Benjamin was abandoned as a kitten and has never had a home.

T: What would you say to people thinking about getting pet?

D: If you’ve thought it out and are ready to care for a pet for its lifetime, it’s a great time to add a new member to your family. But spur of the moment adoptions, especially when you have kids who want a pet for Christmas, can end in disaster. Adopting a pet is a big responsibility so it’s important to make sure we’re the right pet for you. Sometimes people expect us to love them straight away but if we’re shy or have never had any love or human attention, it can

Benjamin the cat with lovely Monika Biernacki

take time to show our true personality. Have patience and visit your chosen pet a few times to build a bond. That way you can make sure we’re right for you. Because there’s no sadder sight than one of us being returned to the shelter because for some reason the love did not grow.

T: What are you looking for in a forever family?

D: My mum Autumn and I are bonded so we’d love a home together with northsiders! We’ve enjoyed many outings in the area and love it. When I’m happy my tail points North too so it’s a sign!

T: What’s your favourite toy?

D: Anything that SQUEAKS! When I first came to DoggieRescue I played with brushes…silly me. Now I know what toys are and I hope Santa is bringing me lots of them.

T: How can northsiders help if they’re not able to adopt?

D: Donating indestructible toys for us to play with helps keep us amused while we wait for our forever families. But the best way of helping is to donate YOURSELF! There are lots of volunteer jobs available and you can also come and meet us and go for walkies. I’d really love that!

Animal MATTERS

with Pet Medical Milsons Point’s Dr Cate Plummer BVSC, BSc (Vet) (Hons) I believe strongly that we gain so much benefit from a close bond with our animal partners, and caring veterinary support is an integral part of this.

Signs of pain in pets

Hiding signs of pain and carrying on despite it are key tools of survival for animals. This means it can sometimes be difficult to recognise when our pets are in pain. Here are some indicators to watch out for:

Personality

• Less interactive with humans and not seeking attention • Irritability and aggression.

Appearance

• Matted fur, decrease in grooming.

• Repetitive licking or chewing at an area.

• Change in pupil size.

Eating and Drinking

• Loss of appetite • Bad breath and increased salivation • Pawing or rubbing at mouth

• Eating/drinking more slowly or with difficulty.

Vocalisation

• Growling, whimpering, whining.

• Meowing more, hissing, spitting.

Movement

• Reluctance/difficulty climbing stairs and jumping • Hunched or stiff posture, limping or unusual gait • Difficulty standing after lying down.

Activity

• Moving around less and sleeping more.

• Increased panting and restlessness.

Toilet Habits

• Not using litterbox and crying/vocalising when toileting • Incontinence/accidents at home.

Visit petmedicalmilsonspoint.com.au or call 8203 4390 or at 28 Alfred St, Milsons Point (Opp. Bradfield Park).

If you notice any changes in your pet that may indicate it’s in pain, it is always worth discussing with your veterinarian. ● @petmedicalmilsonspoint

THE NORTHS

Age is just a number when it comes to staying t and healthy for Northbridge local Vola Young

STAR!

Dipping into a perfect plié, Vola Young is the epitome of poise. In one swift move, the ballerina is balancing beautifully on one leg, drawing gasps of awe from gym goers half her age. Vola’s skills are a testament to her decades of dedication to dance. She is a credit to the discipline’s ability to build core strength and flexibility.

A dancer since she was a child, Vola, who believes age is all about positive thinking, has attended ballet classes at Norths Fitness, the state of the art gym and inclusive fitness centre at Norths in Cammeray, for the past 30 years.

Vola practises ballet in a weekly class at Norths Fitness

“I love the exactitude of ballet,” she says. “You’ve got to place your body properly and do each move absolutely correctly. I practice once a week these days, but I’ve been performing for years...”

Seasoned entertainer Vola’s work on stage and screen spans seven decades.

As a child she studied ballet, jazz and tap before expanding her repertoire to many other genres, including Spanish flamenco and the hula.

“I was banned from TV in Italy after showing my belly button while doing a hula dance,” she remembers. “Back then we were all wearing bikinis here in Australia but in Europe something like that was still shocking!”

From performing in the nightclubs and theatres of Sydney to the stages of Asia, Europe, the Middle East and beyond, Vola’s talent saw her travel the world.

“I was a dancer who could sing, a singer who could dance and then I started acting as well,” she explains.

“I WAS BANNED FROM TV IN ITALY AFTER SHOWING MY BELLY BUTTON DOING A HULA DANCE!”

Vola Young has been a dancer and entertainer all her life

Finding herself a base in Northbridge, Vola was part of the team instrumental to the restoration of the Independent Theatre in North Sydney.

Still gracing stage and screen today, there’s nothing stopping her at the barre.

“I’m a great believer in living well and being healthy,” she says. “Don’t hold grudges and don’t worry about ‘if onlys’ and ‘I should.’ Come and join us in the ballet class! From ballet, you can do anything.”

And as Vola continues her stretches, lifting her leg above her head with ease, it’s hard to disagree with that! ●

By Kayak

It’s been a golden year for Lavender Bay locals Laura and Ben, the husband and wife duo behind award-winning eco-business Sydney By Kayak! The pair and their team of kayaking tour guides took home the prestigious Gold award for eco-tourism at the NSW Tourism Awards in November. It’s well-deserved recognition for their dedication to using paddle power to help preserve the beauty of Sydney Harbour. “We’re so thrilled to receive this recognition for our environmental initiatives,” Laura says. “As a team, we’re passionate about preserving the harbour and we love it when locals enjoy a kayak with us and lend a hand.” Sydney By Kayak’s Clean Up Paddles give local residents and businesses the chance to enjoy a fun session on the water while also doing a litter pick-up and learning about harbour conservation. “Our clean-up paddles are now at 9.30am for corporates and 6pm for individuals, so locals can enjoy a beautiful summer sunset as they help clean up the bay,” Laura says. “We have a new Eco Tour too,” she continues. “It’s our longest paddle yet!” The two hour experience has paddlers heading into Berrys Bay to visit Sydney By

The team contribute $15 from every seat sold to the development and upkeep of the projects, which include ‘Bruce’, a solar powered rubbish collection unit and ‘Jaws’, a plastic shredder run in partnership with Ecobel Sydney. “Last year, we raised $9,450,” Laura says. “And in total, we’ve raised over $32,000 and counting!” It means that SBK have been able to contribute to the design of a $30,000 Living Seawall, set to be manufactured, ready for installation in Lavender Bay in early 2023. These special artificial habitats are installed around the harbours foreshore and encourage marine life to thrive in the area. “We can’t wait to do even more,” Laura says. “We want the harbour to be picture perfect for years to come.” ●

Vale Kingo

northsider farewells beloved local artist and heritage campaigner

Lavender Bay’s unofficial artist in residence, Peter Kingston, passed away in September, aged 79. Peter had been capturing the magic of Sydney Harbour from his home on the edge of Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden for almost 50 years.

Dedicated to heritage, art and creativity, Peter’s acclaimed work is renowned for being a celebration of Sydney - of its landscapes and characters - with a generous sprinkle of mischief thrown in for good measure.

As well as his creative endeavours, Peter, or Kingo as he was known locally, was a passionate advocate for the conservation of Sydney’s heritage. He campaigned long and hard to save iconic landmarks such as Luna Park and May Gibbs’ Nutcote. A heritage public toilet still stands on the foreshore of Quibaree Park today, saved from development thanks to Peter’s persistence.

“It’s a sign of a great city that looks after the best of its heritage,” Peter told northsider when we met him and faithful pup, Brigalow, back in 2019. “Sydney rapidly started losing that when it got rid of things like the lovely Lady Class ferries. I just like things that are

“I COULD KEEP PLUGGING AWAY AROUND HERE FOREVER REALLY.

well made...they’re from another era where work was king. I respect it. People were proud of their jobs and what they made. It was before mobiles, NBN, modems… it’s all landfill isn’t it? This was an era when none of that existed and people talked to each other more.”

From the cabinet of curiosities collected from Luna Park’s past in his hallway to the etching of Boofhead welcoming you to the light-filled lounge room, Peter’s entire home studio in Lavender Bay was an ever-evolving work of art, reflecting his dedication to his craft and his passion for preservation.

“I hate holidays,” Peter told us then. “I’ve got to do something every day.”

The prolific creator did just that, working on pieces for a new December exhibition right up until his death.

From the comic walkway named after him in Lavender Bay that’s peppered with bronze characters including Sam Sawn-Off and Ginger Meggs, created by Kingston and his nephew, to his depictions of the curve of his beloved bay and the Lady Class ferries forever chugging past, Kingo’s spirit will continue to whisper around every corner of his treasured part of Sydney.

As Peter himself told us three years ago, “I could keep plugging away around here forever really. This is where I am.” l

Our favourite place for coffee is…The Flying Bear at the Sydney Flying Squadron in Kirribilli. The café is on the wharf and their smashed avo on toast and bacon and egg roll are our favourites. The coffee and service are great and the beautiful water view’s not to be missed. The best meal we’ve had in the area was at...the Kirribilli Village Café and Ristorante. They do a fantastic steak and the service is always lovely. If we want to have a beer or wine…we usually like a cold Carlton and sparkling wine on

the deck at the Kirribilli Club. We’ll sometimes venture to the Blues Point Hotel, where the banter with the locals is always fun. On the way home, we’ll go to Anchor Restaurant near Lavender Bay for dinner. They do the best pizza and pasta and their garlic mushrooms are delicious. Our ideal day in the area would consist of…sailing on the harbour or having fish and chips and a swim at Balmoral Beach and spending time with our family.

Our fave local takeaway is… the Grace of India in Milsons

Point. We’ll order a spicy chicken jalfrezi, a lamb rogan josh and their cheese and garlic naan breads. Delicious!

Our favourite local walk is… around Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden in Lavender Bay and along the boardwalk by Luna Park. The thing about living in this area we love the most is…how close we are to both the city and beach. The three words we’d use to describe this area are... picturesque, quiet and family-friendly.
