Celebrity chef and restaurateur Matt Healy will be cooking up a storm at The Sporting Social, a major fundraiser at the Queen’s Hotel in Leeds on Friday 27th September in aid of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. Matt, who wowed the judges on Professional Masterchef and runs the Foundry restaurant in Leeds, will be leading the kitchen at the event. He will be serving his famous roast dinner – which was recently crowned Britain’s best – to around 300 guests. The Sporting Social is back for a third year, hosted by TV’s Clare Balding, and featuring sports personalities who will reminisce about their greatest moments, on and off the field. Big names in athletics, football, cricket

and rugby will also take on the audience in a fast-paced sports speed quiz to see if their brains match their brawn! Last year guests included Sir Chris Hoy, boxer Johnny Nelson, Paralympian Hannah Cockroft and footballers Dominic Matteo and Danny Mills. Life&Style Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society Celebrates its 200th Anniversary! For two centuries the ‘Phil and Lit’ has played a significant part in the city’s cultural life through its lectures, concerts, publications, support for research and education, and most notably through the legacy of its magnificent museum which people can still explore and enjoy. This year marks the Society’s bicentenary and a series of special events is being organised to celebrate highlights from its long history and its role in the city today. The story begins in 1819, when post-war Leeds was booming, pots of money were being made by the new industrialist entrepreneurs, but there was deep concern that the town was lagging behind culturally and intellectually. A public meeting was called to whip up support for a Philosophical and Literary Society to promote ‘Natural

Knowledge’ (we’d call it science) and Literature in the town. The cream of Leeds commercial and professional society joined – merchants, bankers, doctors, lawyers, clerics, artists. Many subscribed a massive £100 each for an ambitious new building to house lectures, scientific demonstrations and a museum – one of the first purposebuilt halls of its kind. ‘Philosophical Hall’ opened in Bond Street in 1821, with lectures on chemistry, geology, anatomy, etc from a range of eminent speakers. Over the following years the Society attracted some of the most famous figures of the day to lecture on new and exciting ideas and developments in science and the arts – naturalists, archaeologists, physicists, writers, social reformers: a rich input into the life of the town, stimulating innovation and discussion. The Society’s museum was inundated with objects donated by its enthusiastic members, reflecting their wealth, global travels and breadth of interests. Rare natural history specimens were solicited from explorers like Livingstone. The Society’s curators carefully classified, displayed and conserved everything – outstanding collections of Roman

sculpture, historic coins, geological and botanical specimens from across the world, rare animal skeletons (even ancient hippo bones found in Armley), as well unique items like the fabulous mummy of Nesyamun and the iconic Bengal tiger (once a rug!). The building had to be hugely extended, with a new entrance portico in Park Row. It took on an educational role and became recognised as the leading provincial museum of its day. But society was changing, and in 1921, after long deliberation, the Society took the decision to donate Philosophical Hall and its entire collection to the Council as a public museum for the city. Twenty years later in WW2 the building was hit by a bomb and badly damaged, though

luckily most of the objects survived. It was patched up and used until 1966 when everything was transferred to rooms in the central library building and finally in 2008 to the splendidly restored Mechanics Institute building: the present City Museum. But the Society retains its connection: it is still based in the City Museum and helps to support the work of the whole museum service.

A major part of the Society’s work has always been its publications: reports of its proceedings, sent out to other learned societies across the world, and its one-off papers and volumes. One of the first of these was the account published in 1828 of the carefully planned opening after 3,000 years of the coffin of the mummy Nesyamun and the meticulous unwrapping and analysis of the body: exemplary research and reporting for its time. 180 years later, in 2008, the Society published the first complete translation of the hieroglyphic texts on the coffin. Its many publications over the

years have covered new research and important developments in science and the arts, across the cultural borders. Today the Society continues to offer lectures, open to everyone, across a wide range of topics, and holds special events like its annual science fair. An important aspect of its work is the award

of grants to support cultural activities in the city. Chloe Receives Point of Light Award Chloe Tear, a third year Psychology and Child Development student at Leeds Trinity University, recently received a Points of Light award, which recognises volunteers who are making a difference in their community and inspiring others. Chloe is a disability activist and creator of the award-winning blog ‘Life as a Cerebral Palsy student’. She writes about her experience of living with disabilities, raising awareness of conditions such as cerebral palsy and sight loss. Her blog has had over 80,000 views and she has written for 45 organisations including Scope, the Royal Institute of Blind People, Huffington Post, and the BBC. She is listed on the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100, which recognises the most influential disabled people in the UK. Chloe works closely with ‘CP Teens’, which supports teenagers and young people living with cerebral palsy and other related illnesses. “To be awarded with a Point of Light for my volunteering work is unbelievable!” said Chloe. “It is such an honour to receive such a

prestigious award and I cannot thank everyone enough for their support along the way. I am proud to be able to use my experiences to support, educate and empower others. I hope this is just the beginning of the work I do towards raise awareness for disability and I am excited to see what the future holds.”

Leeds Trinity Leeds Trinity University is holding a series of workshops and writing days to help aspiring and established writers develop their writing style and work towards completing a novel, poetry or short story collection. ‘Write through the Winter’ consists of three workshops on aspects of creative writing and four ‘Space to Write Days’, where writers can work on their projects in a creative and friendly environment. The workshops include plot and structure, dialogue and place, editing and rewriting. They will be led by Leeds Trinity alumni, including children’s and young-adult novelist Liz Flanagan; author Ali Harper; crime novelist Liz Mistry; and poet and writer Maria Stephenson, who will lead the Space to Write Days.

The series is an addition to the Leeds Trinity Writers' Festival, which takes place on 13th March and is now in its fifthteenth year. The Festival has become a highlight on the local writing calendar, providing an opportunity to

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

William Denison Roebuck, FLS (1851 – 1919) Naturalist, Collector, Writer Slugs and snails are unpopular creatures, the gardener’s voracious enemy, but for William Denison Roebuck they were endlessly fascinating subjects for examination and investigation. A friend remembered him sitting at the tea table with a slice of bread and butter in one hand and a jar of recently collected snails in the other – not as a tasty delicacy, but to gaze at while he ate, in the hope of identifying a rare specimen.

He was born in Leeds in 1851, the son of a printer, David Roebuck. He was seven when Charles Darwin published his ground-breaking work ‘On the Origin of Species’ and perhaps this was one of the triggers which led him to devote his life and energies to the pursuit of the natural sciences, observing, collecting, writing, and creating a system for the collection of data which would make his name nationally known. He certainly admired Darwin’s work, and years later in 1880 it was he who arranged and led a deputation from the Yorkshire Union of Naturalists to Darwin’s home at Down in Kent to present him with a memorial address. In his youth his parents bought a holiday house in Pannal, where he could roam the countryside and study its teeming natural life: butterflies, bees, insects, and particularly molluscs, all enthralled him. He found friends who shared his passions. He and three others founded the Leeds Shell Club, exploring, collecting and classifying their finds. This was a time of intense interest in natural history and new methods of scientific investigation, and other enthusiasts soon joined them. A Yorkshire Conchological Society was formed with William Roebuck as its Hon. Secretary, which evolved into a national society: the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, founded in 1876 (one of the first of its kind in the world). Later, in the 1890s, he pioneered through the Society a national scheme for the compilation of a systematic record of the distribution of British land and

freshwater molluscs across the country which became known as ‘Roebuck’s census’ and laid the foundation for other similar studies of species distribution. In 1870 he helped to found the Leeds Field Naturalists Club and was the inspirer and organiser of the Yorkshire Union of Naturalists, which brought together some forty naturalist societies with thousands of members across the county. For thirty years he was the dedicated Secretary of the Union and editor of its influential journal, ‘The Naturalist’. He instituted new ventures like the popular annual ‘Fungus Forays’ which got people out fungus-hunting and recording their finds. Under his guidance the Union became a powerful and successful instrument of local scientific research. (150 years later it still flourishes, as does its journal). He became a recognised authority on slugs and snails, here and abroad – in his honour a new ‘large and peculiar’ specimen of slug found in Zanzibar was named after him! He contributed to important studies of bees and was author of the entomological chapters in the respected Victoria County Histories for the northern counties. His work led to his election as Fellow of the Linnean

Society (FLS). An enthusiastic communicator, he collaborated in various publishing ventures: ‘A Handbook of the Vertebrate Fauna of Yorkshire’ in 1881, which became a standard work; ‘Land and Freshwater Shells: An Introduction to the Study of Conchology’ in 1889 (aimed at young collectors); and ‘A Monograph of the Land and Freshwater Mollusca of the British Isles’ in 1894.

1915 (now in the University’s Special Collections). He was widely travelled, in India and Africa. He never married but lived most of his life with his parents and sisters, originally near the centre of town but from about 1899 in Hyde Park Road, overlooking Woodhouse Moor. His heart seems to have been totally dedicated to his work and specialist interests. In 1915 his achievements were recognised by the University of Leeds with the award of an honorary degree of Master of Science.

His enthusiasms extended into other fields. He was a lifetime member of the Philosophical and Literary Society and the Thoresby (Historical) Society, and a founder and later president of the Leeds Philatelic Society – he had the pleasure of showing his extensive, unique collection of postage stamps and labels to King George V, another stamp enthusiast, on the royal visit to Leeds in

Slung Low Announces Classes for Spring Term

After a hugely successful first term at their Cultural Community College, the Leeds theatre company Slung Low has unveiled a new programme of Pay What You Decide cultural classes. The first term attracted over 350 people and half of the courses were sold out within 24hrs of the term’s announcement! The new term starts 17th February at The Holbeck, Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX and offers a range of cultural activities including Woodwork, Podcasting, Asian Cookery, T’ai Chi, Fire Eating, and Mental Health First Aid. The courses will be led by artists from the region, who will share their skills, experience and passions. These include poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan, author Adelle Stripe and the team from Manjit’s Kitchen.

The curriculum has been chosen by the participants from the first term, who have automatically become members of the College. “For this second term we’ve listened to what people told us they wanted to learn”, said Alan Lane, Slung Low’s Artistic Director. “We’re committed to growing the college community as widely as possible and excited to welcome new and old friends.” Slung Low aims to create unlikely, ambitious and original adventures for audiences outside of conventional theatre spaces. Recently the company produced the award-winning ‘Flood’ by James Phillips as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. The Cultural Community College is a major part of the company’s long-term ambition to create

Leeds People’s Theatre – a citizen theatre that produces outdoor political theatre for the city combining Slung Low’s staging style with a programme of participation and citizen training. The Cultural Community College is supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Arts Council England. In the three years since then, Sam has made a big impact in his teaching career, quickly progressing to Associate Leader in the Faculty of Maths, Computing, Economics and Business. The First Ever Leeds Lit Fest! The first ever ‘Leeds Lit Fest’ will take place at venues across the city from Wednesday 6th – Sunday 10th March. The programme will celebrate the vibrant and thriving literature scene that exists in Leeds with local writers, performers and artists showcasing their talents alongside those from across the UK and internationally. There will be author talks, workshops, performance, poetry and spoken word events, including a Storytelling Takeover at Carriageworks Theatre. Partner organisations will include The Leeds Library, Leeds Libraries, Carriageworks Theatre, Chapel FM, The Leeds Big Bookend and Northern Short Story Festival, Headingley LitFest, Hyde Park Book Club, MILIM, Leeds Minster, Leeds Church Institute and #foundfiction. The Festival will use some of the most creative spaces in the city with a lineup that will see more than 30 events taking place over the five days, incorporating the rich mix of influences from the different partners, all of whom have extensive experience of bringing literature events to the city. “For many years, the partners involved have been putting on their own literature events and festivals very successfully but the city itself has never had its

‘Kes’ Returns to Leeds Playhouse

The story of young Billy and his unlikely friendship in challenging circumstances is so impactful.

As part of the theatre’s Spring 2019 season, Leeds Playhouse is bringing the wonderful Yorkshire story ‘Kes’ to its Pop-Up stage. Fifty years on from the Ken Loach film, this stage adaptation by Robert Alan Evans received rave reviews when first performed at The Playhouse in 2016.

Kes is being remounted by Associate Director Martin Leonard and designed by Max Johns. Max will also design ‘random’ by Debbie Tucker Green, which will play in rep with Kes for the final two weeks of the production.

Jack Lord reprises his role from the 2016 production, and Lucas Button makes his Leeds Playhouse debut as young Billy Casper. Both Jack and Lucas have just finished working together on the War Horse UK tour.

Kes plays in Leeds Playhouse’s Pop-Up theatre from 25th January to 16th February.

“This is such a momentous year in Leeds Playhouse’s history, and the perfect opportunity to restage this much-loved Yorkshire tale”, said Amy Leach, Leeds Playhouse Associate Director. “The story of young Billy and his unlikely friendship in challenging circumstances is so impactful." Based on the Barry Hines 1968 novel, A Kestrel for a Knave, the story tells of the unique friendship between boy and bird as 15 year old Billy Casper adopts, cares for and trains a Kestrel. Contending with a bullying older brother and tyrannical school master, Kes opens up young Billy’s life, allowing him to fly.

NSSF Academy to Support 12 Yorkshire Writers

The Northern Short Story Festival Academy will be supporting twelve short story writers from Yorkshire in 2019. The selected writers form the first year’s intake to The Northern Short Story Festival Academy which was launched last year. Among them is a Pushcart nominee, the winner of the Bare Fiction prize, the winner of the Walter Swan Writing Prize, and a Best of British Short Stories author. The Northern Short Story Festival Academy is a development programme that promotes writing excellence and aims to help short story writers in Yorkshire take their writing to the next level. Participants will join a monthly workshop critique group led by writer Anna Chilvers where they will critique each others’ stories. They will also have an opportunity to have their work critiqued by an experienced short story writer or literary editor. They will showcase their work at the Northern Short Story Festival at The Carriageworks from 31st May – 2ndJune.

A Brand-New Re-working of ‘The Rite of Spring’ Collaborating for the first time, Phoenix Dance Theatre and Opera North will present a re-working of the ballet ‘The Rite of Spring’ at Leeds Grand Theatre on 16th, 23rd and 28th February, and 2nd March, at 7.30pm. This 20th century piece is set to a groundbreaking score by Igor Stravinsky. The 1913 premiere almost caused a riot in Paris as unconventional choreography and shockingly dissonant music provoked anger from the audience. “By presenting brand-new contemporary choreography alongside the thoroughly modern and complex score performed by Opera North’s orchestra, we are becoming a part of the colourful history of this piece over 100 years after it was first performed”, said Sharon Watson, Artistic Director, Phoenix Dance Theatre. In his UK choreographic debut, internationally-acclaimed Haitian choreographer Jeanguy Saintus is to rework the piece. “I am thrilled about my upcoming adventure with Phoenix Dance Theatre and am looking forward to exchanging ideas, and movements with the dancers and the creative team”, he said. “To re-envision a revered narrative choreographed by luminaries sounds like quite a feat. I will bring my truth to this rite of passage, embedding the initiation into how I experience Haitian culture. There will be dialogue. There will also be discomfort. But throughout, we will value respectful empathy.” ‘The Rite of Spring’ also sees the return of ex-company dancer Yann Seabra, but in a different guise – he will be designing the costumes. Theatre Design in London and has designed for leading directors in dance, opera, film and TV. “I was lucky enough to work with some talented choreographers and make long-lasting friendships at Phoenix Dance”, said Yann. “Phoenix also gave me the opportunity to engage in my new adventures as a designer and stimulated me to move on to my new career. I am thrilled to return as a designer, working once again with Sharon Watson, who’s commitment continues to drive and grow the company.”

‘The Rite of Spring’ will be presented as part of a double bill with Puccini’s short comic opera ‘Gianni Schicchi’. “Opera North has long sought to programme a new version of The Rite of Spring”, said Richard Mantle, Opera North’s General Director. “We are delighted that Jeanguy Saintus will be choreographing this new version of one of the most significant pieces of dance music of the 20th century, and we are equally excited to collaborate with Phoenix Dance Theatre for the first time for this visceral, gripping work.”

After months of fundraising, the new Lakeside Playground in Roundhay Park opened just in time for Christmas. Themed around the history of Roundhay Park, the new playground features a castle, pirate ship, static train, musical pipes, eight swings, somersault bars, stepping pods, an explorers’ bridge, inclusive roundabout, springers and a spinner bowl. The Friends of Roundhay Park Fundraising Committee, made up of Laura Webb, Petra Smith, Lexi Moffatt, Sara Dawson and Julia Wilson, was dubbed ‘Mums on a mission’! “This whole project just goes to show how you can achieve anything if you give it to a bunch of busy mums!” said Laura. “I’m really proud of what we achieved and how the community and local businesses got behind us and supported us every step of the way to make it happen.” The team wanted to ensure that children of all abilities would be able to enjoy the new

playground and the Committee worked closely with PhysCap and John Jameson school, who offered insight and advice to help make the playground a place that all families could enjoy. Kompan, the playground supplier, matchfunded the project £50,000 after the Playground team won the company’s 2018 competition, and worked hard to install it before Christmas, often battling torrential rain, which required regularly draining the site. “We were delighted to see such a worthy winner of our 2018 match-funding competition”, said Simon Burke of Kompan. “It has been fantastic to be part of this project with the Friends of Roundhay Park.” “We are delighted with the fundraising efforts of our members, which means that a wonderful new playground for the youngest children in the area has been built

at the Lakeside”, said Richard Critchley, Chairman of Friends of Roundhay Park. “This has been achieved through the efforts of young mother members, who FoRP supported in raising the staggering amount of money needed. We would also like to thank our volunteers who painted the fences surrounding the playground. “We are grateful, too, to the many local businesses who contributed so generously, not forgetting the large organisations, the support of the Parks Department and local councillors, without whom we would not have been able to go ahead. “The Friends are rightly proud of all their efforts that enhance and improve the park. The State of the City 2018 Every year the Council holds its ‘State of the City’ event for councillors, which is themed around how the city is progressing in terms of business, health and social factors. This year’s event featured a Pudsey-business and how it involves young people by showing them how the company works. The company was keen to promote manufacturing as a career and has taken on a number of apprentices. There were eight workshops covering a range of topics – including active lifestyles,

housing, living with long term conditions, the environment, and arts and culture. Guest speakers outlined the issues people have to deal with and what is being done to help overcome them. At the active lifestyle workshop this was not just about physical health but also about how people’s mental health could sit alongside an active approach through community cohesion. Improving transport links in order to encourage active lifestyles was also addressed. In the workshop regarding living with long term medical conditions, we were made aware of how certain conditions could be managed through digital applications and social prescribing, which helps people through support-based activities related to their needs.

Adel & Wharfedale Ward to have a number of local amateur dramatic companies, clubs and societies showcasing all kinds of cultural skills from flower growing and arranging to painting and exhibitions of local art. A workshop dedicated to environmental activities focused on waste management and how communities can take ownership for their area. There is some great work going on – for example, Leeds in Bloom, local litter picking groups, and many of these involve and include children and young people who take pride in their area.

Thanks to New Funding LCF Can Continue to Tackle Holiday Hunger Thanks to significant funding from Leeds City Council, the Asda Foundation and Jimbo’s Fund, Leeds Community Foundation will continue to support some of the 30,000 schoolchildren in Leeds whose families and carers struggle to feed them during the school holidays. Over £200,000 will be distributed to community projects that provide locally-based activities in the most deprived areas of the city. Working with Leeds City Council, Leeds Community Foundation launched the Holiday Hunger campaign in 2018, providing funding for over 40 projects which enabled vulnerable children to access food, fun activities, and learning and support for families.

“Healthy Holidays was one of Leeds’ success stories of 2018”, said Cllr Debra Coupar. “We are so pleased that the programme enabled children and their families to access over 4,500 food and activity sessions during the 2018 Easter and Summer holidays. We are delighted to be able to support the initiative in 2019.” Pip Goff, Partnerships Director at Leeds Community Foundation said: “In 2018, we funded a fantastic range of activities – from wool craft to street dance, sport and cooking to gorge scrambling - all delivered alongside a healthy and nutritious cooked meal or packed lunch. The Goosander is a member of a small but distinctive group of diving water birds known as ‘sawbills’ – a reference to their long serrated hook-tipped bills, which is a dark red colour in the Goosander. It is larger than a Mallard with a thick neck, and male and female birds have very different plumage. The male has a white body, black back and dark green head. In Winter its white plumage is flushed pink, as if seen under a setting sun. The female, in contrast, has a grey body, a reddish-brown head with a drooping crest, white throat, brown neck and grey breast. It is a bird of fresh water, breeding in upland lakes and slow flowing rivers, usually close to woods or forests. It feeds on a variety of fish, including young salmon, trout and eels, and nests in holes in trees, tree stumps and sometimes special nestboxes. By covering over your rhubarb crowns to exclude light, you can encourage them to grow more quickly and put up pale, tender stems with delicious flavour. You can buy fancy terracotta forcing pots for this, but really anything will do. My Gran used to use an old rusty bucket which worked perfectly.

There have been rhubarb farms in Yorkshire since the 1800s and each year the crisp, forced stalks are sent directly to London where huge sums of money change hands for a box of the best.

Perhaps the ultimate commendation for ‘Stan & Ollie’— a new biopic about the turbulent lives of comedy icons Laurel & Hardy. From superstardom in Thirties Hollywood to desperation in Fifties Britain, Jeff Pope’s sensitively executed story follows the final performances of Laurel and Hardy as the two ageing stars tour music halls up and down the country. When empty houses and broken promises begin to strain their fragile relationship, an old rift reopens — threatening their chances at a big screen comeback.

A whole generation has grown up in the media-rich digital age, yet so many have seemingly missed out on the films of Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, the Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello and numerous other monochrome masters. Like so many, Laurel & Hardy’s work has been relegated from mainstream programming to the preserve of boutique cinemas and specialised film festivals. That is, until now… ‘Stan & Ollie’ goes a long way to bring the genius of Laurel & Hardy back into focus, demonstrating why the double act was so popular for so long. In a casting masterstroke, Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly jump into Laurel & Hardy’s shabby shoes with pin-sharp recreations of memorable sketches, scoring plenty of laughs with a modern audience. Coogan is unrecognisable in a transformation which perfectly mimics Laurel’s elfin-like mugging, whilst Reilly channels Hardy’s blustering vocal rhythm and gait with uncanny accuracy. Combined with some truly award-winning make-up appliances, you’re instantly convinced the duo is the genuine article.

We learn that Stan and Ollie riff off each another with a similar, if less inflated rapport to their on-screen personas. During a blazing row which becomes physical, the exchange displays perfect comedy timing and evidences how in-tune the pair were with each other’s rhythms — even when off-duty. It would seem they were the perfect odd couple in life as they were on screen.

Gradually, the rigours of live performance take their toll, and tensions revive a decade-old argument: Following a dispute over money, Laurel’s studio contract was terminated, yet Hardy continued performing in his partner’s absence. It was a wounding betrayal for Laurel, who failed to completely forgive his co-star. The conflict escalates at a party, and provides a real assault course for Coogan and Reilly to interrogate the core of their characters beyond firststage caricature. The result is a superbly nuanced, sincere two-hander which gradually unpacks the complexities of friendship and, ultimately, the politics of forgiveness. Some noteworthy antagonism is further waged by the acerbic Ida Laurel and Lucille Hardy. Providing two double-acts for the price of one, Shirley Henderson

and Nina Arianda deliver a hilarious subplot of distrust and dislike, mirroring their husbands’ lives with an unexpected and very moving resolution. Director Jon S. Baird has somehow secured big screen values on a modest budget of just $10 million. Opening with a breath-taking shot which snakes through a checklist of iconography on a Hollywood backlot, the film soon transfers to the less glitzy landscape of Post-war Britain. Baird blends authenticity with nostalgia, signposting red telephone boxes and tea from china cups at every opportunity. It feels like Britain viewed through the eyes of a tourist, with photography as vibrant as a Fifties seaside postcard. As a biopic, ‘Stan & Ollie’ succeeds as a great technical achievement. The film also stands independently as a heartfelt and intimate story about the complexities of professional commitment and comradeship. It is ultimately a fable of forgiveness, framed by the pressures of chasing fame and fortune. But most importantly, through its bittersweet finale, it delivers the one last cinematic hurrah the duo failed to achieve themselves, and succeeds in reviving their work for a new generation to enjoy. Without doubt, ‘Stan & Ollie’ is another fine mess worth getting yourself into.

Sound&Vision Another Great Night at The Brudenell The Brudenell Social Club consistently nurtures an eclectic music scene, making itself an essential stop on national tours for all sorts of acts. In this case it was The Alarm, the classic rockers of the 80s, the transatlantic troubadours Ryan Hamilton and the Harlequin Ghosts, and Californian newcomer Julia Othmer. It was a night of classic rock nostalgia for some, and an intriguing portal into a still evolving scene for others. Julia Othmer, a singer songwriter/ keyboardist from San Diego was on her first tour of the UK. She is positive and engaging both on stage and off, keen to praise her supporters, fellow bands, the venue and herself. Her closing song was a celebration of self-affirmation – it’s always pleasant to be surrounded by a crowd chanting “I’m frickin’ awesome”! Ryan Hamilton and the Harlequin Ghosts (formerly known as The Traitors) were probably as close to a headline act as you can get from a support group. The five-piece is fronted by Ryan Hamilton from Texas, backed by four British musicians. The band can only really do what it does thanks to the Internet, giving the first rather modern twist to a band steeped in Texan country and classic 80s rock. The band was promoting their soon to be released album which they are incredibly excited about, describing it as the best thing they’ve ever done. The songs range from a homage to Country, to the almost

pop-punk sounding new single Bottoms Up, Here’s to Goodbye, hinting that the influences of the 90s and early 00s can’t be easily escaped. The band was complimentary about Leeds, praising the turnout, the energy, the excitement, and the engagement they always receive from the city. Like Julia Othmer, the band was keen to explain the family atmosphere of the tour and thanked The Alarm for lending the band gear, space, and support. Apparently, this is what U2 did for The Alarm once and they wanted to pass on that tradition. The Alarm walked on stage to a sea of cheering. Still sporting some rather 80’s hairstyles these classic rockers put on quite a show. The music was tight and anthemic with the crowd loving every minute of it. One can almost wonder why these guys didn’t become the international sensation instead of U2. There was only one downside: after the feel-good energy of the support bands The Alarm did seem a bit dated. For all their stage presence and camaraderie, they were the old hands here riding a wave of nostalgia. However, The Alarm remain giants of the music scene two decades after their heyday. Not only do they still command a stage, they also genuinely care about the emerging scene, supporting new artists, celebrating established ones, and curating a community that wants to engage and be part of something bigger than themselves. Banff Mountain Festival Celebrates its Tenth Year The Banff Mountain Film Festival is celebrating its tenth year and returns to Leeds Town Hall on 7th and 8th February. The Tour features two different collections of new films from some of the most intrepid film-makers in the world, starring pioneers and explorers tackling extraordinary expeditions in the wildest corners of the planet. Films are selected from hundreds entered into the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which takes place every November in Canada. Highlights include:

This Mountain Life – Martina and her 60-year-old mother Tania embark on an epic ski traverse from Vancouver to Alaska – six months and 2,300km of journeying though relentless mountain wilderness. Review: ‘Singing You This Song’ by LeeSun LeeSun is a Leeds-based singer/songwriter producing chilled-out, easy listening, art-pop tracks. The sound is a little reminiscent of Kate Bush and Björk, and the subject matter keeps things familiar: whether its relationships in love and family, taking the listener to darker places of pain and loss, or lifting them up again with aspirations for oneself or others – feelings LeeSun describes as having “no other way to get out”. The album describes itself as being “about honesty and unashamedly feeling and expressing your own feelings in any moment.” It achieves this by dancing gracefully between styles. The second track ‘My Life’ takes a defiant stand, celebrating selfassurance with a large vocal backing in an upbeat pop style highlighted by soaring trumpets, while the fourth track ‘Dry Your Tears’ almost falls into a blues dirge or spiritual, replete with ominous basslines and chords, and an echoey, dirty guitar – less Norah Jones, and more Tom Waits. The penultimate track provides a wonderful sense of resolution. Titled ‘I’m Coming Home’ it is almost a traditional folk ballad on a finger

picked guitar, about the prodigal son’s return, satisfying and comforting in its emotion. The depth of this album reflects the team behind it. Between all the contributing musicians, artists, photographers, and engineers this album combines the efforts of twenty people. ‘Singing You This Song’ is varied, intellectual, challenging, reassuring, and inspirational all in one. Yorkshire Games Festival at NSMM The Yorkshire Games Festival returns for its third year at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, from 6th – 10th February. 2019 will see the Festival build on its remit to celebrate games culture and introduce a new generation to the science and art of games development. The five-day event will provide a contentrich schedule celebrating games culture, design and production. Game Talks will feature knowledgeable speakers like ‘Broken Sword’ supremo, Charles Cecil, who will cast light on his career and the next phase in Revolution’s quest to make ground-breaking adventure games; Brjann Sigurgeirsson of Swedish development powerhouse Image & Form, known for its 2D action-platformers ‘Steamworld Dig’ and ‘Steamworld Heist’, will talk about his years working on the series; Rami Ismail of Vlambeer will give valuable insight into the world of indie games development; Mette

A Million Steps for Alzheimer’s Research Keith Loudon (85) from Horsforth has raised over £13,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK by walking in and around Leeds in his One Million Steps Challenge. Currently Chairman at investment management and stockbroking firm Redmayne Bentley and a former Lord Mayor of Leeds, Keith also arranged a series of lunchtime walks with colleagues through Leeds city centre, which increased donations as well as encouraging people to socialise and enjoy time away from the office.

“This cause is very close to my heart as I have first-hand experience of supporting a loved one affected by Alzheimer’s disease”, said Keith. “We must work together to make a difference and ensure younger generations do not have to go through this. We urgently need more research into dementia.” There’s an estimated 850,000 people in the UK with the condition and there are currently no treatments to slow or halt the causes of dementia. Alzheimer’s Research UK specialises in finding

Bramhope Bowls Club is on The Up! The 2018 bowling season was hugely successful for Bramhope Bowls Club. The teams played in the Airedale and Wharfedale League and in the previous season the Wednesday Pairs team gave the Club its first ever success by gaining promotion to Division 2. At the end of the season, the Monday Evening team won its division and was promoted, and the Saturday afternoon side also gained promotion, losing only one match all season and finishing as runners-up in its division.

Jenny, a young girl from Yorkshire who has aspirations to be the naughtiest girl in the world, doesn’t appreciate her long-suffering aunt and uncle with whom she lives, and the safe, loving environment that they provide for her. Her best friend, a talking cat named Philip, takes Jenny on adventures in her imagination where she sees children who are far less fortunate than her. In the end, Philip succeeds in teaching her a lesson about being grateful for what she has, and the importance of helping others.

The Human Aquarium, a new exhibition presented by Yorkshire Life Aquatic, will run from 15th – 28th February at the St John Shopping Centre in Leeds. It looks at the world through the eyes of sea mammals. Using Mer-folk in place of marine mammals, examining aquariums and their inhabitants through thoughtprovoking images, installations, films and interactive activities, created by Leeds-based artists and collaborators. What is it like to spend your life in a tank? And, for those still in the oceans, what effects do single-use plastics have on their environment? Why should it matter to us?

family friendly workshops will feature Mermaid Mondays, Dolphin Scramble, Ocean Plastics, Sculpting the Future and the Forever Octopus. Sculptures will be made from single use plastics to demonstrate the amount of waste created by our throw away culture and the impact on the planet.

Family Fun at the Arium The Arium, Leeds City Council’s horticultural nursery on Thorner Lane, Whinmoor, LS14 3FB, is celebrating February Half Term with two free fairground rides – most suitable for children aged seven and under.
