Already it’s nearly Easter! You know this when you see all the calls for participants in upcoming walks, runs and other outdoor pursuits to help raise funds for numerous charities. This month Valley Striders, a new Cookridge Community Run, and a long-distance walk are among them. There’s also an opportunity to contribute to the Lord Mayor’s Charity, and Hope Pastures is celebrating an anniversary. Roundhay Open Studios returns with the opportunity to visit artists in their work environment; The Headingley Festival of Ideas promises a feast of information, discussion and
debate on the theme of ‘Borders’; They Lived in Leeds focuses on Victor Hugo Watson, who brought Monopoly to the UK and turned Waddington’s into a successful company; and Sam Payne reviews Ricky Gervais’s new series. This year’s Headingley Festival of Ideas (9th – 25th May) is shaping up to be the most exciting and challenging Festival yet! It promises a feast of information, discussion and debate on the theme of ‘Borders’ at a variety of venues around Headingley. Highlights include a panel discussion with Alex Sobel MP and others, looking at the UK’s interpretation of the Refugee Convention and what it means for people seeking asylum here. A day of events and presentations at South Parade Baptist Church will look at the impact of borders and walls around the world – ranging from Hadrian's Wall to the Balkans’ Peace Park area, and the nitty gritty of working for Medecins sans Frontieres in areas of conflict. The day will end with a showing of the film ‘Les Sauteurs’. You will have the opportunity to see Sound Company perform their latest piece ‘Wall in the Mind’, hear local poets explore their concepts of borders and - on the lighter side - learn about making a prize-winning garden border, or walk around the boundaries of Headingley.
There will be conversations on the experiences of refugees looking for asylum within the borders of Europe and discussions on how prison affects the personal boundaries of its inmates. You’ll also be able to expand the borders of your mind with an evening of jazz and learn about changes to the earth’s boundaries following movements in tectonic plates.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford
Victor Hugo Watson (1878-1943) Master Printer: The man behind John Waddingtons of Leeds and London One Friday evening in 1935, at home in Horsforth, Victor Watson suggested to his son Norman that he should try out a new board game from the USA called Monopoly. Norman played it all weekend, enthralled, and on Monday Victor made his first ever transatlantic phone call to acquire the UK rights for Waddingtons. He and his secretary taxied round London and spent hours in a Lyons tearoom at the Angel in Islington choosing London streets for the British version, finishing with the Angel itself. Monopoly was to become one of Britain’s favourite board games, its place names and rules etched in family memories: ‘Go to jail, go directly to jail’…! Victor Watson had joined John Waddington’s printing business in 1908. Founded in the 1890s by printer John Waddington, ‘long John’, tall and moustachioed, in partnership with the Grand Theatre’s flamboyant actor/manager, Wilson Barrett. It specialised in theatrical work – posters, programmes, souvenir albums. But JW was no businessman and the firm was teetering on bankruptcy when Victor Watson joined it as a lithographic printer. Five years later JW retired (under a cloud) and Victor, energetic and ambitious, took over as manager and in 1916 as managing director. During the years that followed he transformed it into one of the largest printing companies in the country. Although born in London, in Brixton, Victor had grown up in Leeds. His father was a commercial traveller, originally from Yorkshire, and after several moves the family settled in Leeds when Victor was about seven. They lived in Little Woodhouse and its narrow streets were Victor’s playground – he was a lively, sporty boy. There were eight children to feed so money was tight; Victor had to leave school at 13, starting work as a butcher’s boy. But his father insisted he learn a trade and at 16 he was apprenticed to a local printer: printing remained his life’s work.
In 1902 he married local girl Ethel Dawson and they moved to Belle Vue Place, where their first son Norman was born in 1903. Their next home was Ebor Place off Royal Park Road, living with in-laws, including Ethel’s mother, who worked as a cleaner at the Town Hall. Taking lodgers helped to pay the bills. Victor’s printing job was routine and he jumped at the suggestion he should apply to join John Waddington’s – the move was to transform his life. From 1916, under his management, Waddingtons thrived and expanded. A London branch was established in 1919, and in 1921 the firm became a limited company and acquired spacious new premises in Wakefield Road, Hunslet. Victor was dedicated to producing only top quality work, teaming up with specialist artists and lithographers. The firm still kept its theatrical work, winning a lucrative long-term contract to supply the Moss theatre group, but they also became known for their fine advertising posters, particularly their splendid range of art posters for LNER, in the series Beautiful Britain and It’s Quicker by Train – York, Bridlington; the Yorkshire Coast etc: iconic images now enjoying a revival.

In 1922 Victor saw a new opportunity. Playing cards had become popular during WW1, helping to pass time for men stuck in the trenches. There was only one major supplier. He found ways round the technical problems of sourcing the right materials, precise printing, cutting and edging, and introduced imaginative new designs and marketing methods. With advertising packs like Beautiful Britain Waddingtons cornered the market. All this helped the firm survive the trauma of the 1926 General Strike, when Victor struggled to keep the factory open, and the subsequent depression. An innovative scheme with Wills for miniature playing cards in cigarette packs boosted sales. Card production continued even in WW2, at Churchill’s express command. Then there were the games: Lexicon in 1932, the hugely popular Monopoly and experiments with new ideas for board games. Victor, working now with his son Norman, led the firm into other new areas of production too: packaging, jigsaws, maps, and during WW2 specialist government work, including the secure printing of bank notes. It was in 1943, in the midst of war, that Victor died aged 65, still managing director of the huge Waddington enterprise.
His memorial at Lawnswood celebrates his passion for printing and his love of music – there were regular musical evenings at his home at Clare House, Scotland Lane, Horsforth, where he and Ethel had moved around 1930. Sport was his other love: cricket at Headingley and golf at Horsforth and Sandmoor. He enjoyed a comfortable life – a chauffeur, regular stays at the Waldorf in London – but was known for his care and concern for his employees. His energy, acumen and dedication made Waddingtons of Leeds a household name. [Waddingtons closed in 1994 – see ‘The Waddingtons Story’ by Victor’s grandson, another Victor Watson. The name still appears on packs of card, made by a different company.]

Voujon Celebrates a Year in Headingley! We discovered Voujon Indian Restaurant soon after it opened in Far Headingley just a year ago – we loved it then and that first impression hasn’t changed! In the last year it has steadily built up its customer base, attracting not only individuals and families but also larger parties and wedding celebration dinners. Taking Syd’s recommendations, we dived into giant prawns as both a starter and main dish called Khulnar King Prawn, in a thick Bangladeshi style sauce. We also chose a delicious vegetable curry, Sylheti Vegetables, which was just teeming with different vegetables and wonderfully spicy. I have to say, Voujon never disappoints. Talking to owner Syd Miah, we wondered if any particular dishes were proving more popular than others. “We have gained quite a reputation for the quality of our seafood dishes”, he told us. “I have to say our fish is excellent quality. People love our Halibut steak and we only use very large King Prawns, which is unusual for most restaurants. Our lamb is also very popular – the way we cook it, it just melts in your mouth. So we have a lot of fans for our lamb too.”

The Leeds G&S Bring Guys and Dolls to The Carriageworks ‘Guys and Dolls’ – a musical fable of Broadway – written by Abe Swerling and Abe Burrows, to the music and lyrics of Frank Loesser, will be presented by the Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society from 1st - 4th May, 7.30pm at The Carriageworks Theatre. Set in New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy, featuring inveterate gamblers, night club dancers and the Salvation Army. The story takes us from Times Square to Havana, Cuba, and even to the sewers of New York.
It is considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, especially by Samuel Goldwyn, who paid $1,000,000 for the rights to the musical; subsequently producing the 1955 movie featuring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons. It is a lively and lovely show and includes many show stopping numbers, such as ‘Luck be a Lady’ and ‘Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat’. This production is produced by the awardwinning Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society who have been performing in the city for over 100 years. Leeds G&S has a growing reputation for staging exciting,

Roundhay Artists Open Studios Over May Bank Holiday For a sixth successive year, Roundhay Artists will open up their home studios to visitors over the bank holiday weekend 5th / 6th May. Open Studios has proved to be a hugely popular event. It was first organized in 2014, in the wake of the Roundhay Live Art Trail, the aim being to demonstrate the diverse talents of professional artists in the area. This year sees new artists getting involved, as well as familiar faces exhibiting their latest work. Twenty-five professional artists are taking part and there is a wide variety of work on show, including print making, ceramics, painting, glass and wood, through to contemporary installations. The artists are all happy to talk about their work, much of which, of course, is available to buy.

1,000 Leeds school children will take part in song projects in 2019. Families and children under five can discover the joys of voice and piano at the Lieder for Little’uns workshop (28th April).
Leeds Lieder’s ninth festival of art song takes place from 25th – 28th April. Under the artistic directorship of Joseph Middleton, ‘Then Shall Song’s Magic Break Free’ is a four-day celebration of artsong. Supported by Arts Council England, it champions the art-form, educating and growing audiences and commissioning new works. A range of world-class artists has been invited to Leeds for what is set to be an enthralling and varied programme, featuring cornerstones of the Lieder repertoire alongside works written especially for the Festival, an ambitious education programme, and interactive and informative events for children, poets and amateur singers. Mackenzie Thorpe is 2019 Tour De Yorkshire Artist
Mackenzie Thorpe was confirmed as official Tour de Yorkshire artist for 2019, when the full route was announced in December and four stunning pieces of art in celebration of the event (2 – 5 May) were recently unveiled at Arthaus Gallery in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Famed for his atmospheric and poignant creations, Mackenzie’s work is true to his roots and packed with emotional expression which speaks of hope, love, struggle and challenge - values which align perfectly with the spirit of the Tour de Yorkshire. “I'm absolutely thrilled and honoured to be the official artist for the Tour de Yorkshire”, said Mackenzie. “For me the whole county is a never-ending inspiration; the dramatic skies, the dales and the moors are like nowhere I have ever been.
“When I was thinking about the images, I knew I wanted to create a collection which also reflected the broader impact the race has on people. So, alongside images of peak fitness cyclists speeding through our glorious hills, dales and coast, there is (for instance) 'Riding with Grandad' which shows a child in a Yorkshire town, learning to ride a bicycle, aided by their grandfather. Arts&Culture ‘Gather Them In’ at The Brotherton How did a church organist from Sheffield amass the largest private collection of Mendelssohn material in Europe? ‘Gather them in: the Musical Treasures of W.T. Freemantle' is at the University of Leeds Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery until the end of July. Freemantle had a passion for music and collecting, which led to him amassing the largest collection of Mendelssohn material outside the composer’s own family. The exhibition is curated by Dr Bryan White from the School of Music and displays previously unseen musical manuscripts and personal letters of Felix Mendelssohn. A child prodigy, he produced one of his most famous works, the overture to ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, aged just 17, and is well known for his overture ‘The Hebrides’ and the oratorio ‘Elijah’.
The works on display include a sonata handwritten by the 14-year-old Mendelssohn. Without this original manuscript, and Freemantle’s acquisition of it, this piece of music would have been lost forever. The private letters exhibited provide a glimpse into the private life of a musical genius.

The exhibition also illuminates the often overlooked and forgotten Mendelssohn, Felix’s sister Fanny, who was an accomplished and prolific composer in her own right, composing more than 460 pieces of music. Her last composition, Bergeslust’, written the day before her sudden death in 1847, forms part of the exhibition. A programme of public events will accompany the exhibition. CommunityNews Happy Anniversary to Hope Pastures! The Phyllis Harvey Horse and Donkey Trust was set up 45 years ago and has been running the Hope Pastures’ Sanctuary on the corner of Weetwood Lane and the Ring Road for 15 years on 5th April. After going through a rough patch and on the verge of closure, the sanctuary was taken over by photographer Graham Gawthorpe and his daughter-in-law Lynn in 2004. They drafted in a new band of volunteers and trustees and relaunched the sanctuary as Hope Pastures. The first sign that the corner had been turned was when the charity's work was awarded the Animal Welfare Carer's Award by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2007. Today Hope Pastures is well known for its rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing work and is funded entirely by public donations. A small charity, with few overheads, 95p of every £1 donated is spent directly on the animals. To celebrate this milestone, Hope Pastures has introduced a new ‘External Welfare’ team, which is achieving fantastic results and allowing many more animals to be helped without a huge increase in costs. There’s an equine crisis across the UK. Horse sanctuaries are full, and thousands of animals are in desperate need. Hope Pastures’ External Welfare team works with the community and local horse owners to identify horses in need, help them in their existing location or find them new homes with experienced, caring equestrians. This support can include passporting, micro-chipping, castration and healthcare as well as education. Helping an animal in this way costs significantly less than taking them to the sanctuary, caring for them there, then trying to re-homing them.
Today Hope Pastures is well known for its rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing work and is funded entirely by public donations If the community support can’t provide an effective solution, the team can work with other sanctuaries to find a home or admit the animal to Hope Pastures. In some extreme cases, this remains the only route. Hope Pastures trialled its External Welfare Team during 2018 and helped three times more horses than usual. They looked for the most effective way to use donations to improve the lives of as many horses as possible. It’s very exciting to see the charity leading the way in equine rescue. On Easter Monday, 22nd April, Hope Pastures is organising a Birthday Party from 2 – 6pm to celebrate. This will be an afternoon of activities, music and refreshments and, of course, the opportunity to meet the team and the rescued ponies. The event is free and everyone is invited. Addressing the Needs of People in Leeds The Leeds and Moortown Furniture Store, the local charity that has been collecting unwanted furniture and passing it on to families in need for over thirty years, recently combined the launch of the Leeds Lent Prayer Diary with a drive to attract more donations. Formed at Moortown Baptist Church and now based in Seacroft, the charity, along with twenty other church and community support groups, was invited to promote its work at the city wide event – something that Chair of Trustees John Sherbourne described as "a fantastic opportunity to highlight the fact that even in a vibrant city like Leeds there are still huge areas of need". Also present, were Hilary Willmer, who set up the charity in 1986, Rev Graham Brownlee, a cominister at Moortown Baptist Church and the store manager, John Gamson.

Naming Adult Autism: Culture, Science, Identity Dr James McGrath is a senior lecturer in Literature and the Humanities at Leeds Beckett University. He was diagnosed with Autism in his thirties and has recently written a book entitled ‘Naming Adult Autism: Culture, Science, Identity’. Although the book is an academic study, it is also openly autobiographical. It gives a voice to Autism as it challenges and critiques mainstream coverage of the social disorder, interrogating clichés in literature, cinema and television. It also looks at more progressive works on autism and connects with critical writings by people who are #ActuallyAutistic. “There’s an old but influential theory that autistic people are automatically good at maths but do not ‘get’ the arts and cannot understand fiction”, said James. “That idea
is scientifically dubious and needs demolishing. ‘Naming Adult Autism’ reveals serious flaws in the Cambridge-based research which has popularized this stereotype. It also critiques how the stereotype of the autistic as a white, high-achieving male scientist is polluting media, cinema and even literary fiction.” Dr James McGrath’s poems have also been published in various literary journals. As the days get longer and warmer I’m looking forward to spending more time in Roundhay Park. For those of you with young ones, it is worth paying a visit to the newly refurbished lakeside playground. A huge thank you goes out to the parents who ran the fundraising campaign for the new equipment and the sponsors who contributed. We’re now looking at the upper playground, which got a lot of use over our hot summer last year. Park staff have repaired the worn out turf and we are looking at what else can be done to improve this very popular area. The
bigger pieces of play equipment would cost at least £40k, so this is a challenge. Repairs have been made to parts of the path around Waterloo Lake. Thanks, as ever, go to the Friends of Roundhay Park for their help with this work. This year we have used limestone instead of sandstone for the first time as this should last longer. It feels a little early in the year to be talking about cricket, but the Cricket World Cup will be coming to Leeds this Summer. To mark this, three new all-weather wickets will be installed in Roundhay Park. Looking at citywide issues, the Council has won £29 million to implement a Clean Air Zone in Leeds. This is to reduce the levels of unhealthy air pollution in the city. The scheme will

work by charging the owners of the worst polluting lorries, coaches, buses and taxis to drive within the zone. Non-business vehicles will not be charged. I recently received an update on the 20mph speed limits for the parts of Alwoodley west of the A61 and also the areas between Shadwell Lane and the Ring Road. It appears that the Council’s highways team has completed its consultation and investigations and has now approved the 20mph zones for these areas. In the coming months, the signage will be changed and the speed limit for many residential streets reduced to 20mph. To help drivers to observe these speed limits, Peter, Neil and I have purchased eight Speed Indicator Devices that you will see around the ward. We will move these every 6 – 8 months – the hope is that all areas will eventually have a SID – to help keep speeds where they should be.
For families with children starting Reception and ‘Big School’ this coming September, Tuesday 16th April is Primary School Offer day. I know this can be quite an anxious time. Whilst the vast majority of families do get a school that they have chosen, this is not always the case. If you find yourself in that position, please feel free to get in touch. I have been helping parents navigate the school admissions system since I first became a councillor nearly eight years ago. Councillors cannot force a school that is full to take extra children, but we can provide guidance, advice, letters of support and even representation at school admissions appeal hearings. I am not promising that we can get exactly what a parent wants, but we do try to make a stressful, complex process easier to manage. My experience is that in most cases, whichever school young people end up in, by the end of the first term they tend to have made friends and are happy, settled and hopefully learning.
In recent months, Alwoodley’s two state funded high schools have had Ofsted Inspections. Allerton High received a judgment of ‘Outstanding’, which was incredibly well deserved and a testament to the hard work of its students, staff, senior leaders and governors; LJFS (whose first GCSE results saw it come second in Leeds for passes in Maths and English at Grade 5 and above) received a judgment of a very strong ‘Good’. Both Ofsted reports are uplifting to read. Together with GSAL, it is so positive that our three Alwoodley high schools are performing so strongly and leading the way in secondary education for our community’s young people. Just One Day for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Councillor Graham Latty, Lord Mayor of Leeds 2018, chose St Gemma’s Hospice as his charity for the year and has focused on the work of the hospice all year. As his term of office comes to an end, the annual ‘Just One Day’, this year on Friday 17th May, invites everyone to get involved and join in raising both awareness and funds for the Lord Mayor’s Charity. Every organisation in the city is invited to get involved on 17th May – but if that particular day doesn’t suit, feel free to organise your event or fundraising for another and support the Lord Mayor with one final push in their last few days of fundraising. Wherever possible, the Lord Mayor will be happy to attend fundraising events.
New Play Area at Tinshill Children in Tinshill can now enjoy a new play area, thanks to local councillors James Gibson and Christine Knight, who worked to secure the funding to create it.
Leeds Greenpeace volunteers recently handed back three trolleys full of unwanted plastic packaging to Sainsbury’s Moortown. This plastic was collected from Sainsbury’s customers, who also wrote messages to the store, asking it to ditch single use plastic. Single-use plastic packaging is a major contributor to the plastic pollution that is having a devastating impact on our rivers and oceans, and UK supermarkets generate more than 800,000 tonnes of plastic packaging waste every year. “Everyone we spoke to in Leeds was concerned about the excessive use of plastic and really supportive of the campaign”, said volunteer, Rosa Shaw. “We’ve all seen the whales washed up on beaches with stomachs filled with rubbish. It shouldn’t be so hard for
shoppers to avoid plastic. Do tomatoes really need to come on a tray wrapped in cellophane?” A recent survey of supermarket plastic use by Greenpeace UK and the Environmental Investigation Agency revealed that despite their huge plastic footprint, half of the supermarkets surveyed have no specific targets to reduce plastic packaging and most of those that do are moving at such a slow pace (5% per year) that it would take them 20 years to rid their shelves of throwaway plastic. Following consultation with local residents, schools and community groups to determine requirements, the new play area is now open and being well used. The consultation led to a much bigger and more inclusive play area, better suited to children of all ages. It includes swings, a Zip wire and a Scramble net, as well as new seating. “We are thrilled to have this new play areas in Tinshill”, said Cllr James Gibson. “Having somewhere safe and fun to play is so important for children and this is a really wonderful addition to the area. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to put forward their ideas and requests for the play area. We feel it’s a great benefit to the area and hope everyone agrees that the finished result was well worth the work.”
New TV Hospice Campaign Includes St Gemma’s A patient, a housekeeper and a volunteer from St Gemma’s Hospice are among those who took part in a television advertising campaign celebrating the work of hospices across Yorkshire and the Humber. The first of its kind for hospices in the region, the ad was produced by eleven hospices to raise awareness of the high standard of support being offered and encouraging supporters to ‘Keep Your Hospice Shining Brightly’. Run during daytime viewing, it launched across the ITV Yorkshire region on 1st March. The stars of the campaign include nurses, physiotherapists, patients, fundraisers, volunteers, housekeepers, bereaved family members and therapy dogs, all of whom help to bring hospice care to thousands of people across our communities every day. Representing St Gemma’s were Ann Williamson (a patient), housekeeper Jane Millbrook and volunteer Malcolm Moss. The message was clear and simple.
It highlighted the expert care, comfort and support that hospices provide to growing numbers of people in the region – all completely free of charge. “Hospices touch the lives of thousands of people each year and we were keen to get this message out to a big audience”, said Kerry Jackson, Chief Executive at St Gemma’s. “This was an opportunity to connect with people who may not know about our work and to highlight that hospices only exist thanks to the amazing support of people in their communities.” To coincide with the launch of the advertising campaign, a new website, www. supportyourlocalhospice.co.uk also went live on 1st March. April is a good time to hear and see migrant blackcaps returning from Africa to breed in the UK. At other times of the year this small songbird could quite accurately be described as ‘skulking’ in its favoured habitat of dense hedgerows and bushes. In Spring, however, as for many other species, the imperatives of the breeding season trump caution and the avoidance of predators. If you pick the right day – the first dry one after arrival on its territory – the blackcap will belt out its loud, clear, melodic song from every bush and branch, from dawn to dusk. It is not a colourful bird, but the male’s jet-black crown contrasting with grey brown elsewhere makes it easy to identify. The female is a bit duller with a reddishbrown cap. In addition to woods and thickets, the blackcap can often be seen in gardens, especially ones with plenty of vegetation. In Summer, their main food source is insects, such as caterpillars, flies and beetles. In Winter,
however, it has a more catholic diet, and will feed on berries, windfallen apples and the seeds, fat and scraps put out at bird tables. It is thought that taking advantage of garden feeding has caused some blackcaps, especially those from southern Germany, to spend the Winter in the UK, rather than returning to Africa. For a change, the blackcap is a good news story, as the population in Europe is thriving. Leeds RSPB Group

Traditionally unpredictable, April weather can bring sunshine, showers, or sometimes even snow, making life interesting but often challenging for gardeners. In the Flower Beds Warm Spring weather will soon have plants sending up new shoots, and as soon as this begins to happen, the weeds will also start to appear making weeding a regular job from now until the end of the Summer.

Those emerging plant shoots are particularly attractive to slugs and snails so put measures in place to keep these pests away. I use copper collars around a few favourite plants as they emerge in Spring, but wool pellet products, biological controls and beer traps are also useful in the fight against mollusc damage.
But they can be trimmed back by about two thirds and any spindly stems can be removed before being re-potted to give them a new lease of life. The stems you take off can be used to make more plants for your Summer displays by taking a short section with plenty of shoots and removing all but the top pair of leaves. Push the end of the shoots into some gritty compost, keep them warm and watered and you should have rooted cuttings within a month and busy plants full of colourful flowers by the Summer. These colourful plants, often referred to as geraniums, bring a splash of colour to containers all over the land. They need to be kept frost free over Winter, and often look a little spindly in April.
Sow seeds for tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, courgettes and squash into trays of compost on your windowsill or in the greenhouse. Some vegetables can be sown directly into prepared soil outside – these include broad beans, sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, radish, spinach and chard. It is time to plant out seed potatoes that have been producing sprouts (or chitting) on your windowsills indoors. I don’t have much space in my garden so the potatoes go into large containers of compost. I fill the pots to about a third of their height, put three potatoes in each, and cover them with a little more compost adding more each time the shoots come through until the pot is full. This encourages them to produce plenty of tubers.

AFTER LIFE WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: RICKY GERVAIS STARRING: RICKY GERVAIS, PENELOPE WILTON, DAVID BRADLEY, ASHLEY JENSEN, TOM BASDEN, TONY WAY, DAVID EARL, JOE WILKINSON, KERRY GODLIMAN CERT: 18 RUNNING TIME: X6 25 MINUTE EPISODES “I’d rather be nowhere with her, than be somewhere without her…” Believing that there’s no prospect of a future following the death of his wife, a regional journalist has decided to live each day by his own rules – and he’s happy to die trying.
'After Life' is Ricky Gervais’ new comedydrama which premieres on Netflix this month. Something of an accumulation of ideas seeded in earlier work, including his divisive stand-up shows, this sixpart series is arguably Gervais’ most perceptive and poignant output to date. We follow Tony as he struggles to break through the torment of living as a middle-aged widower. He hates his job, has no interest in other people and exists only to lose himself in a stupor at the end of the day. The benign, intrusive actions of others eating, talking or breathing torments him endlessly. Only videos of his late wife, or the need to walk his dog, offers escape from his anguish. It doesn’t seem like a premise with much potential for humour, and as comedies go, 'After Life' isn’t loaded with one-liners either. The concept takes some direction from David Nobbs’ 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin' as a bleak comedy – there’s even a sorry scene of our man walking into the sea. So it plays out foremost as a drama, which happens to be punctuated with comedic moments. The series allows Gervais to draw on some of his favourite obsessions, including: compassion for animals and the elderly, criticism of theology, misanthropy, snobbery, a childlike love of foul language and a total intolerance towards overweight people. His attacks are often on point, fearless, vicious and generally in bad taste. There’s no doubt some of the language will turn off the uninitiated – especially his defiant use of the C-bomb - but it’s worth pushing through some blue window dressing to enjoy the commentary beyond. Tony’s rejection of almost everything in life introduces him to the fringes of society, where he befriends a derelict drug dealer and a street worker. It’s a great opportunity for worlds to collide with some cutting observations, allowing Gervais to study unconventional characters and explore their backstories in a
meaningful, sympathetic way. When Tony accidentally solicits a prostitute and discovers she’ll do “anything” for £50, he instantly hires her (to clean his kitchen). Later, they become close friends. Like so many moments in the series, it’s a surreal scenario, yet it purposefully challenges expectations. 'After Life' brings together a familiar ensemble of Gervais regulars in supporting roles, such as the brilliantly sincere Kerry Godliman as Tony’s wife, whilst Ashley Jensen plays a small yet integral part as a potential love interest. A hang-dogged Tony Way plays victim to some physical gags as a slobby photographer, whilst Paul Kaye – notable for his role as Dennis Pennis in the 1990s – hands over a hilariously self-absorbed counsellor.
Premier players such as Penelope Wilton and David Bradley give 'After Life' some additional dramatic gravitas. A subplot on a cemetery bench between Wilton and Gervais offers a genuinely moving exchange of bereavement, allowing the characters to unburden grief through shared experience. It’s a totally straight two-hander which slowly develops over six episodes yet would work beautifully as a standalone play. Meanwhile, Bradley provides a gentle yet devastating study of dementia as Tony’s ailing father, with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments on the side. 'After Life' feels like a life’s work of ideas. Whilst it’s often very funny, its intentions stretch beyond a few good laughs. The jokes set out to rattle the easily offended, but the storytelling sincerely unpacks the taboos of death and depression in sobering detail. Although Ricky Gervais may not be an auteur for everyone, this brave composite of comedy and commentary is certainly something everyone should try to seek out. It’s uniquely unrepentant in its humour, yet thoughtful and hopeful in its study of a man at war with his emotions. There’s nothing quite like it. Available now on Netflix.

Sex Positive Spoken Word at Leeds International Festival 'Sex Tapes’, a sex positive spoken word event, kicks off the Leeds International Festival 2019 on Thursday 2nd May, 8 – 11pm at the purpose-built festival village outside The Tetley.
A documentary about a swingers’ club in Rochdale, by two Leeds Trinity University Media students, has won 'Best Factual Film' at the Royal Television Society Yorkshire Student TV Awards 2019, which celebrate emerging talent and recognise the best audio-visual work created by students Holly Murphy and Joe Greenough made ‘The Swinging Life of Rochdale’ in the final year of their Media degree. “We decided to film a documentary about swingers as we knew it was a taboo subject that not many people understood or knew about”, said Holly. “We wanted to shine a light on the subject and make it funny and light-hearted. We followed a club owner for a few months and on the way met and documented the regulars to her club. “"I'm absolutely buzzing, after the months and months of hard work, I can't believe we've won! I love making factual films. I have created two documentaries, one about
a drug dealer and this one about swingers. I am hoping to film lots more about taboo subjects that some people might be scared to explore and document.” Holly and Joe will now be entered into the national Royal Television Society Student TV Awards, which recognise excellence across the entire range of programme making and broadcasting skills throughout the UK. Sex Tapes will be a night promoting all things sex-positive through spoken word. Eight performers from the North of England, chosen through an open call and judged by two experts from the worlds of poetry and erotica, will give performances that tantalise, titillate and celebrate sex, love and relationships. “The problems of our sex-negative culture have come increasingly to light over the last few years, and rightly so”, said Eleanor Snare, host of Sex Tapes. “Sex Tapes is a show to share stories of how wonderful sex, love and relationships can be and to encourage everyone to start celebrating and stop shaming.” The Sex Tapes event is open to anyone over 16. Many big energy companies may not want you to know this, but green energy is now cheap energy. New statistics show that onshore wind is now the cheapest form of electricity generation in the UK, even cheaper than polluting alternatives like coal – great news for both your energy bill and the environment. The government recently threw its weight behind offshore wind projects, hoping that by 2030 one third of UK electricity will be generated this way. The collapse of plans to build further nuclear plants in the UK has left questions about the source of our electricity in the future - it looks as though wind power could be part of the solution. UK jobs and investment The benefits of renewable energy extend beyond the environment and lower bills. The development of offshore wind farms also offers a great opportunity to utilise British technology as we become leaders in the field. The UK built half of Europe’s offshore wind power in 2017 as the sector broke installation records, even more than Germany.
The further development of offshore wind will bring investment to coastal communities and could generate up to 27,000 jobs. Hornsea One, based just off the coast of Yorkshire, is set to be the biggest offshore wind farm in the world and will generate enough electricity to power one million homes. Solar, batteries technology
and
turbines only need low windspeeds to start turning. Second, investing in a basket of renewable generation – including wind, solar, hydro and wave – offsets any risks. Finally, battery technology is reaching the stage where we can efficiently store energy that is generated infrequently, so it’s always available when we need it. Sound&Vision The Return of Rocksteady Raconteurs – The Indecision The album is relaxed, polished, varied, and engrossing
The Indecision (Leeds’ premier providers of rocksteady) return to stages across the UK this April, after a two year ‘unofficial hiatus’. With a new single and an album due out in April, The Indecision are raring to get back out there. First formed in 2011 around the ideas of Rikk (keys/vocals) and George (guitar/vocals), an eight-piece rocksteady act took shape, releasing a self-produced album, a couple of singles and touring nationally in 2014/15. The band then paused as members pursued other projects. According to Rikk, the break has been quite therapeutic and added new meaning to the upcoming tour and album. ‘Give It Up’ is the second full length album to be released by the group and demonstrates its maturity in its seventh year. This is a ska band that draw more from the early Jamaican ska of the 50s, and rocksteady and lovers rock of the 60s, rather than from the subsequent two-tone of the 80s or third wave of the early 00s. The opening track features a dramatic call to attention from an emphatic and impressively lengthy drum fill over classic guitar upstrokes. Throughout the song a full horn section both frames the phrases and joins in on syncopated stabs,
creating an energy that you just have to dance to. For true boogie aficionados the band presents a fitting tribute to Fats Domino with a glorious cover of ‘Ain’t That A Shame’, with all the power that can be delivered by an eight-piece band. ‘Swan Song’ (the longest song on the album) brings the tempo down and opens with a build to an ethereal jazz chord but fills in the breaks in the vocals with a guitar that feels somewhat calypso. In between the instrumental ‘Slapstick’ oozes cool with every beat. Overall the album is relaxed, polished, varied, and engrossing. Upbeat and positive in a classic rocksteady style, this is a perfect album for the summertime – perfect for those sunny days in a garden or in a park. The Indecision tour starts 11th April, promoting their new album ‘Give It Up’, released by Brixton Records. Awareness Volunteers Needed to Raise Funds for Dementia Research in the UK A research team at the University of Leeds is currently working on a project that aims to understand the level of stroke awareness in the UK population.
A North Leeds fundraising group is looking for new members to help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Members can get involved in a variety of ways – from organising events like coffee mornings, concerts and supermarket collections, to raising awareness through encouraging businesses, community groups, schools and individuals to support the charity. Alzheimer’s Research UK regional fundraising groups play a crucial role in reaching communities and acting as ambassadors, whilst raising funds to help scientists make life-changing breakthroughs in dementia research. Dementia, most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s, affects around 850,000 people across the UK. The charity is currently supporting pioneering research projects worth over £31 million in universities across the UK.

Valley Striders Launch 0 – 5K Programme
It has always offered beginner sessions, but now it is launching a programme for those with no running experience who want to train for a 5km challenge. The programme starts on Tuesday 16th April (6 – 7pm) and will run every Tuesday until 4th June in an inclusive and judgement free environment. Training will take place on a mixture of grass, tarmac and local trails with trained coaches who have experience of working with runners of all levels and backgrounds. The programme ends with an opportunity to take part in a local 5km event. Whether you want to try something new, challenge yourself, make new friends and connections in the area, or experience what a ‘runner’s high’ feels like, go down, sign up and have some fun!

Remembering Gill & Raising Funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research Chris Hewitt, a porter at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, has organised an 86 mile walk to raise money and awareness for Yorkshire Cancer Research in memory of his wife Gill. The walk will start from St James’s Hospital, where Gill received treatment, on 29th April and finish in Filey on 3rd May - the 16th anniversary of her death. The Filey community has arranged free fish and chips for everyone taking part, as well as a buffet on the evening of arrival in a local pub. Chris was inspired by his daughter who took part in the ‘Great North Run’ to raise money and awareness for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
“I was going to do it on my own, then I mentioned it to a couple of doctors at work and they offered to walk with me”, said Chris. “Then I mentioned it to my management team and their offers of help in organising it have left me so pleased and humbled. If anyone would like join any part of the walk they would be most welcome, as would any donations to help find a cure for this terrible disease that touches everybody’s life.” Chris is hoping to get as many people involved as possible and to raise at least £2,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research. The money will go towards helping more people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope

New Weight Management Service in Leeds The UK is facing an obesity epidemic: more than one in four adults is obese, and the prevalence is increasing. In Leeds, 62% of people aged 16+ are overweight. Now, people with severe and complex obesity in Leeds will get support to manage their weight through a new service beginning in April. The programme has been awarded a three-year contract by NHS Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), to deliver Tier 3 Specialist Weight Management Services across Leeds. The partnership (Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) will offer weight management programmes for 12-18 months, helping those with obesity problems to lose weight and improve their health. The team will provide a range of medical support, specialist diets, talking therapies and physical activity.
Previously only delivered in a hospital setting - the new NHS partnership will see Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust offering additional support in a community setting. The team includes staff from all three NHS Trusts comprising physicians, dietitians, psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and weight management advisers with specialist knowledge, skills and experience in helping people manage their weight. “We will deliver a range of accessible, community-based, weight management support to help people make changes that will help them lose weight and understand the underlying issues that can cause weight gain”, said Emma Oates, Service Manager at Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust. “Some people will already be accessing a range of community services such as Diabetic Services, Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) and Musculoskeletal Services. We will make sure care is more joined up for people accessing these services.”

Leeds Beckett University is currently recruiting older adults (60+) to take part in a research opportunity involving 12 weeks of resistance training with free protein supplements worth over £1,000. The resistance training will involve being supervised for 12 weeks by a trained professional and you will be required to ingest protein shakes! Alongside this you will receive information on your body composition (fat and muscle percentage), resting metabolic rate and dietary intakes, and a test to indicate your functional capacity.

Do You Suffer from Urinary Incontinence? Researchers at the University of Leeds, with an interest in women’s health and wellbeing, are seeking women volunteers aged 55+ who suffer from urine leakage. This might happen when you cough or laugh, or you might get sudden urges to go the toilet. Working closely with women who have urinary incontinence and health professionals who provide incontinence care and support, the research team has developed a Self-management Guide that provides strategies that could help you manage your symptoms. This is a great opportunity to find out how to better manage urine leakage. If you agree to take part, you will be randomly selected to either receive the guide and a support session with a researcher, or receive the guide only after three months. The team will assess your current selfmanagement strategies, symptoms, confidence in managing the urine loss and how it affects your daily life before and after the use of this guide. You may also be invited to talk about your experience of using the guide. There is no travel involved, a researcher will visit you for the support session and later discussion. Leeds Schools’ Fairtrade Celebration
To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, there was a Schools’ Celebration at Leeds Civic Hall on 1st March. Children from eight schools attended and Fabian Hamilton MP welcomed them to the Banqueting Suite.
Based in Harehills, the tutti frutti theatre company specialises in creating imaginative theatre for young audiences. The company recently embarked on a Stateside tour, spanning eight states, of ‘Underneath a Magical Moon’. Over 4,000 school children in Las Vegas have seen the play, and 3,392 young people enjoyed it in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Written by Mike Kenny, ‘Underneath a Magical Moon’ is a playful and charming reimagining of Peter Pan, as told by Wendy. Performed by three actor-musicians, the production features live music, enthralling movement and a sprinkle of tutti frutti magic. It was created especially for children aged 3+ and their families.
“We’re thrilled to be representing Leeds and the UK children’s theatre sector by touring ‘Underneath a Magical Moon’ across the USA”, said Wendy Harris, Artistic Director of tutti Frutti. “This tour is a great opportunity for tutti frutti to spread its wings and reach vast audiences as we take the show across America, from Las Vegas to New York City. We opened the production with a sold-out week-long run in Las Vegas and the young audiences were fantastically responsive, enjoying the storytelling, live music and Mike Kenny’s imaginative script. It’s a wonderful way to showcase tutti frutti’s original productions for young people. Hopefully international opportunities will continue to grow, alongside the important work we do for children in Leeds and across the UK.”
Sustainable sourcing & Fairtrade manager for the Co-op, Sarah Wakefield, spoke about her visit to the Ivory Coast. “We believe it is so important that children understand the story behind the chocolate they eat and how Fairtrade does so much to support the farmers who grow the cocoa”, she said. There were six workshops, three of which were designed by the children themselves. The Divine Chocolate company presented a chocolatebased workshop, and there was also a puppet power workshop and Fairtrade game. After the workshops, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress explained that the City had been a Fairtrade City for over 15 years. Battle of the Bands at Allerton Grange Allerton Grange School’s Battle of the Bands took place on 28th March. The first half of the evening showcased a variety of performances from the Samba Band, Junior and Senior Concert bands, Rock Bands and the Choir, with the second half featuring the Battle of the Bands competition. This was a new event and after several heats the finalists took to the stage, performing a cover version of a song and one of their own compositions. This was an excellent opportunity for students to show the progress they had made on their instruments and as ensemble performers. Performing in front of an audience can bring out better performances than in classroom situations. It was a thoroughly entertaining experience.

International Jousting at The Royal Armouries
The Royal Armouries’ International Jousting Tournament returns from Friday 19th – Monday 22nd April. This year it promises a transatlantic clash of knights with teams from the USA and Canada, as well as Poland and the UK. Eight internationally-renowned knights will battle it out in an authentic medieval tournament, in pursuit of the Sword of Honour and prestigious Queen’s Jubilee Trophy.
There will be two shows each day, with Easter Monday featuring other special events, including an authentic medieval mêlée, the grand finale and prizegiving. The individual knights competing will be Andy Deane and Mike Collin for Team UK, Jean-francois Drapeau and Jessy Dufresne for Team Canada, Michal Ruda and Piotr Rydzewski for Team Poland, and Jeff Wasson and Jeff Sanders for Team USA. In the weeks leading up to the tournament the museum will host a number of exciting events as part of its Medieval Easter programme, which runs from 30th March – 14th April. As well as combat demonstrations, dramatic performances and havea-go activities, there will also be a live-action Wars of the Roses weekend (6/ 7 April).
The weekend before the tournament (13/14 April) you can get close to the action at the ‘Day of Knights’ and watch the Team UK knights in training. There will also be an opportunity to meet the knights and learn what it takes to be a jousting champion, as well as the real stars of the show – the Atkinson Action Horses. “This year’s tournament promises to be bigger and more action-packed than ever”, said Mark Jackson, Events and Informal Learning Manager. “We are delighted to be welcoming these world renowned competitors to our arena. Ready Steady Lift Off! Learn the seven stages of training to enter space! Preparation is essential. Everyone must do their stretches and eat their veggies. Hygiene is taken seriously, and everyone must study hard, keep safe, take part in group decision making, speak space station lingo and learn to work with a multinational team. These seven steps act as useful tools to help children and their adults work within a tolerant, respectful and empathetic society.
Once the seven stages have been learnt, each member is given a cardboard rocket and tool kit containing colouring equipment. They will decorate their rockets using weird and wonderful materials, whilst being entertained with storytelling, music, movement and clowning.
Combining live performance, music, storytelling and painting, Ready Steady Lift Off! invites you to take part in its weird and wacky astronaut programme at the Carriageworks Theatre on Wednesday 3rd April. This immersive theatre show is perfect for ages 3-8 and their families.
But, it doesn’t stop there! Having coloured their rocket, the children will be invited to fly through space, putting into practice the seven stages. Once they have passed through space, they can finally take their decorated cardboard rockets home.
