0113 274 8776 You may not realise it, but the quality of life of thousands of Leeds’ residents is enhanced daily by Wade’s Charity – the city’s oldest charity. Wade’s rents huge swathes of parkland, open spaces and sports grounds to Leeds City Council (including Middleton Park, Gotts Park and Beckett Park), whilst hundreds of community groups and projects develop and thrive through the charity’s funding. Today Wade’s contributes to more spheres of Leeds life than ever since its foundation over 500 years ago. For generations its mission has been to provide facilities for the ‘recreation, amusement, entertainment, health and social interaction’ of Leeds’ people, and, with continued pressure on public resources, its role has never been more key to their enjoyment. Wade’s has public park and woodland in south, north and west Leeds, as well as
numerous playing fields and many open spaces and quiet areas in the city centre – all provided by Wade’s in conjunction with the Council’s Parks and Countryside Service. Wade’s also provides cash grants to community groups and activities, including youth groups, play schemes, elderly welfare groups, arts and local theatre societies, sports clubs, community and neighbourhood facilities, and environmental restoration projects. On average, Wade’s provides grants totaling at least £130,000 to around 55 organisations each year. Without these grants many life enriching activities and services would either struggle to get off the ground or be unable to provide their services for residents.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford Sir Edwin Airey (1878-1955) Building Contractor, Entrepreneur and Inventor ‘Airey’ houses have been in the news recently – pre-fabricated concrete houses named after their designer, the Leeds builder Edwin Airey, built in the thousands post-war to relieve the housing crisis. Controversial and problematic, they cast a shadow over his reputation. But there was more to Edwin Airey than housing. He was contractor for some of Leeds’ most iconic 1930s buildings, played a part in the city’s public life, and masterminded the development of the Headingley cricket and rugby ground, establishing Leeds as a world-class sporting venue. He was born and brought up among the crowded terraces of Woodhouse, the second son of William Airey, a stone mason who moved into building. He went to the local Blenheim Board School, then on to Leeds Central High School and the Yorkshire College (now Leeds University). His elder brother left for an academic career, but Edwin joined the family firm, Wm. Airey & Son, and took over in 1905 when his father died. He transformed the business, winning major lucrative building contracts not just in Leeds but across Yorkshire. Ambitious and inventive (a bedside notebook always ready for new ideas), he began to explore new construction methods and experimental materials like concrete. The First World War brought massive opportunities which he seized – government contracts for gun-ranges, factories, and innovative hangars for the fledgling Air Force, and a role as chief adviser on transport for the Ministry of Food. This work brought him influential contacts and powerful connections. Post-war the firm ran a substantial reconstruction project in the devastated areas of northern France, while at home Airey responded to the desperate need for housing by developing a system for building concrete houses cheaply, using unskilled labour. With government backing Leeds contracted him in 1920 to build 1,600 of these ‘duo-slab’ houses, 800 in green fields
at Meanwood. The first residents of the ‘white houses’ loved them but were soon disillusioned by damp, cold and cracks.

These were good years for Edwin Airey; a knighthood in 1922, Freedom of the City of London, and Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1923, when he raised £100,000 for the Leeds hospitals. That same year he took over as chairman of the Leeds Cricket Football and Athletic Company, vowing to make its Headingley ground the best in the country. He masterminded the building of impressive new stands and the transformation of the ground into a major international venue for cricket and rugby league. He remained chairman for 40 years, well-known and respected in the sporting world. He was involved in some landmark building projects. Builders are not usually in the limelight – architects get the glory – but Airey was high-profile. His firm was chief contractor for the magnificent Lewis’s store in the newly redesigned Headrow – the largest department store outside London and a coup for Leeds in the depression. Airey’s own patented system of ‘Aerodome’ concrete flooring was used, saving tons of steel. When Lewis’s opened in 1932 people flocked to admire its marble walls, and to ride nervously on the first escalators ever seen in Leeds.

Several contracts followed at the University: the magnificent Brotherton Library, opened in 1936, and the handsome stone buildings fronting Woodhouse Lane. But perhaps the highlight was the luxurious Queen’s Hotel in City Square, opened by the Princess Royal in 1937 – a ‘masterpiece of hotel building’ which he had overseen personally. He appears in the pictures: lively, dapper, always sporting a white carnation.
He enjoyed a settled personal life: married for more than fifty years, five children, a life-long Methodist and teetotaller, member and benefactor of his local Oakwood church, a Freemason, staunch Tory, supporter of numerous charities, a lover of music as well as sport. He lived all his life in Leeds, moving early on to upmarket Roundhay, and around 1920 to Oakwood Grange – coincidentally famous as the scene of Louis Le Prince’s first film. When Edwin Airey died in 1955 he was remembered as one of Leeds’ ablest sons.
WW2 brought further government work and was followed by yet another housing crisis. Airey had developed a new range of pre-fabricated concrete houses and flats, tested with prototypes in Seacroft, which got official blessing. Over the next decade some 26,000 ‘Airey’ houses went up around the country and in the Netherlands. These houses, he claimed, were built to last – bricks would soon be obsolete.
As for his namesake houses, serious structural faults emerged over time and in the 1980s they were classed as defective and due for demolition. Many went, including the old Meanwood estate. Today methods exist to repair them, and currently residents in Oulton are fighting to save their cherished Airey homes. Ugly, controversial, faulty, or loved, they are part of our social history: four from Gateshead are now to be rebuilt and preserved at the Beamish museum in county Durham.

Action Replay Looks at the Technology that Makes Great Sports Broadcasts Broadcasters’ ambitions to make their coverage of sports the most immersive experience possible has resulted in a behind-the-scenes competition in technology and innovation that matches anything seen on the track and field. ‘Action Replay‘, the Summer family exhibition at the National Science and Media Museum (13th July – 30th September), features some of the gamechanging innovations in technology, as well as some of the more quirky ideas used to bring audiences closer to the sports they love. It includes equipment from the 1948 London Olympic Games that has never been exhibited before, the camera that captured Britain’s first colour TV images, and a replica of Clare Balding’s Olympic shopping trolley! Sports broadcast breakthroughs highlighted include the UK’s first television Outside Broadcast from the Epsom Derby in 1931; how
Wimbledon and snooker drove the introduction of colour television in the 1960s; and the way equipment like ‘Ref Cams’ and e-sports continues the trend. Action Replay also looks at some of the more unusual sportsrelated broadcast phenomena, such as Paul the psychic Octopus and John Motson’s sheepskin coat, as well as exploring how sports equipment, stadiums and even rules have been adapted to accommodate audiences at home. “The UK has pioneered new technology throughout the history of sports broadcasting”, said Elinor Groom, Curator of Television and Broadcast at the National Science and Media Museum, “and that spirit of innovation continues in global
sports broadcasting today. Technology has changed the way we experience the world’s biggest live events, and in the age of TV on-demand, online streaming and even competitive digital gaming, live sport continues to bring people together.” Action Replay has worked with BBC Sport, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, Sky Sports and the National Football Museum to show how broadcasters work. In addition to demonstrating technology and recalling some of broadcast history’s most memorable events, it will encourage families to take part in interactive challenges – seeing what it would be like to be a presenter, replaying tricky sport techniques in slow motion, and learning about emerging sports popularised through the internet. www.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk

Arts&Culture Giles Round and 'The Director' at The Hepworth Wakefield This year marks the 300th birthday of Thomas Chippendale, who produced some of the finest furniture ever made and is often referred to as the first interior designer. In properties like Nostell, Wakefield’s National Trust house and garden, he designed whole room schemes, sourcing everything from expensive wallpapers to basic fixtures and fittings. His significance as an entrepreneur is exemplified in his publication 'The Director' (1794), a catalogue of his designs that prospective buyers could use to commission pieces. To mark the Chippendale tricentenary, The Hepworth Wakefield is collaborating with Nostell and the artist Giles Round to explore Chippendale's legacy and the relationships between art, design and the domestic sphere. Round will create installations at both locations that examine how homes have become important staging grounds for dialogues between art and design. At The Hepworth, Round will examine the gallery’s own history as the former Wakefield Art Gallery, which was sited in a domestic property in the city centre. In 1959, director Helen Kapp organised an exhibition called Living Today where she invited eight architects to refurnish and redecorate the galleries,
as if they were once again inhabited domestic spaces. Kapp also produced an extensive catalogue for this exhibition, itemising the objects on display and directing visitors to the relevant suppliers and stockists.

At The Hepworth, objects from ceramics and textiles to glass and furniture, that were shown in the 1959 exhibition and are still in production, will be displayed alongside examples of the best handcrafted and industrially produced objects being made today. Each month these objects will be rearranged, allowing for different combinations of objects to be presented over the course of the exhibition. In the spirit of Chippendale’s ‘The Director’, there will be an itemised list of particular objects on display for visitors to purchase. Taking the name of Chippendale's catalogue as its title, the exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield will turn the gallery into a domestic showroom that echoes the craftsmanship and entrepreneurship of Thomas Chippendale, whilst also referencing Kapp's Living Today exhibition. The exhibition opens on 13th July and runs until 13th January, 2019

The fabulous ‘Calendar Girls - The Musical’ returns home to Yorkshire and opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on 16th August. The show is based on the true story of a group of women, who decide to pose nude for a Women’s Institute calendar in order to raise funds to buy a settee for their local hospital in memory of one of their husbands. Calendar Girls presents life in their Yorkshire village, how it happened, the effect on husbands, sons and daughters, and how a group of ordinary women achieved something extraordinary. This award-winning production by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow played a sixmonth London season at the Phoenix Theatre last year, having already played sold-out seasons in Leeds and
Manchester. For those who saw it as ‘The Girls’ last year, don’t think for a minute ‘been there, done that’! You can expect new songs and interesting tweaks. "To be given a chance to revisit Calendar Girls was a unique opportunity”, said Tim Firth. “Gary and I have been working away and, as the great Stephen Sondheim once said: ‘musical comedies aren't written, they are rewritten’!" Gary and Tim grew up in the same village in the North of England and have been friends for 25 years. With Take That, Gary has written and co-written 14 number one singles, has sold over 50 million records worldwide and is a six times Ivor Novello Award winner. Tim has won the Olivier Award and UK Theatre
Award for Best New Musical, and the British Comedy Awards Best Comedy Film for Calendar Girls. The new tour will star television presenter Fern Britton as Marie, Lorraine Bruce as Cora, Anna-Jane Casey as Annie, Sara Crowe as Ruth, Ruth Madoc as Jessie, Rebecca Storm as Chris and Denise Welch as Celia. Anna-Jane Casey has built a great reputation in musical theatre, but this is very different to her previous roles. “This is such a down-to-earth story”, she said. “It has been a joy to work with Tim. He and Gary are both Northern lads so it’s written from a Northern perspective. The lyrics have had us both laughing and crying. What’s lovely too is that we’re
working with the real Calendar Girls. With the help of the real Annie I will make the part my own. I’m also looking forward to exposing myself! Returns for Another Fun Weekend of Art Now in its fourth year, Kirkstall Art Trail on the 21st and 22nd July is an annual celebration of art in the community which aims to support, promote and bring together a diverse range of local artists and makers. This year, it is branching out with new and exciting workshops aimed at anyone who wants to get creative and make something BIG! You can try your hand at street art, large scale painting and lots of other activities with guidance from professional artists.
Over the weekend, venues across Kirkstall will host a variety of exhibitions, artist-led workshops and activities suitable for all ages and abilities. The main venue is Kirkstall Abbey – others include St. Stephen’s Church, Kirkstall Educational Cricket Club, an allotment, a café, a pub or two and even a camper van!

One of the main goals of the Trail is to help emerging artists gain confidence in exhibiting their work, so a number of early career artists will be exhibiting alongside those with more established careers. It will showcase a truly broad ranging celebration of creativity, which will make for a vibrant and exciting two days. A free event, Kirkstall Art Trail aims to inspire engagement with the arts and celebrate the huge creative talent in and around Kirkstall. It is organised entirely by volunteers with a passion for arts and community and is funded by the Inner West Community Committee Wellbeing Fund. Refreshments will be available around the Trail, so visitors can take as much time as they need to explore and get involved! Watch Out for Scams!
Chapeltown Citizens’ Advice is advising people to be on their guard against financial and legal scams following a rise in reported cases – over 1,200 were reported to the consumer service in the year ending April 2018 - a 6% increase on the year before.
“Scammers can be very convincing, especially online, and are skilled at persuading people they are legitimate”, said Nick Morgan, Chief Executive of Chapeltown Citizens Advice. “The stakes are high with financial and legal scams as you can end up losing your savings or pension.
Common scams include ‘phantom goods’ - where goods are bought but never delivered - and computer software, where victims are called and told there is a problem with their computer. The fraudsters charge a fee for ‘fixing’ it, as well as gaining access to personal and financial information.
“When you get approached about any investment, don’t rush into anything without making sure it’s legitimate, particularly when you’re contacted out of the blue.”
A range of investments scams were also reported, including fake websites claiming to offer cryptocurrency investments, like Bitcoin. Scammers also pose as stockbrokers and get you to place bets on whether phoney shares will rise or fall within a certain date.

There will be 160 stalls selling a wide variety of goods and providing useful and interesting information. There will also be a fun fair, and a fun dog show open to all. A large range of hot and cold food stalls will cater for all tastes and appetites, including vegan, and the beer tent will have some excellent local brewery ales. Appeal is Steaming Ahead! Group Annual Open Meeting
The Roundhay Playground Appeal has got off to a great start and has already raised £50,000 of the £100,000 target required to refurbish the children’s playground by the Lakeside Café in Roundhay Park. Two great opportunities to support this excellent appeal are coming up this month. On Saturday 21st July there will be a Summer BBQ and quiz evening at The Lakeside Café. 40 Faces of St Gemma’s To mark the fortieth anniversary of St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds City Museum is hosting a powerful new exhibition of portraits by Olivia Hemingway. ‘40 Faces of St Gemma’s Hospice’. The exhibition features images of patients, families, staff, volunteers and supporters,each portrait taking you behind the scenes and into the lives of the people who make the Hospice such a special place. They demonstrate feelings of hope, love, happiness, humour and bravery.
Olivia’s style captures people in a range of settings across the city and each photograph is accompanied by that person’s story, as they share their connection with St Gemma’s. India recounts the time she spent with her mother when she was a patient. “It wasn’t what I expected”, she says. “It was lovely. We sat there one Saturday night and I did all her make-up and we had a movie night.”
Like many of the others, India’s story shows a side of St Gemma’s that people may not expect and St Gemma’s hopes it will promote more open conversations about life and death. The exhibition launches with a special Fair on Saturday 7th July from 10am – 4pm. There will be stalls, performances and family friendly activities. The exhibition runs until Sunday 23rd September. Home Garden RSPB Big Wild Sleep Out
Once again, it’s time to get close to nature and sleep under the stars with the RSPB Big Wild Sleepout, running from 27th to 29th July. Lots of events are organised around the country, but families are also encouraged to camp out in their garden and discover the wildlife that is active when we are asleep.
You are also likely to see moths clustered around any outside light. There are over 2,000 different moth species in the UK, and some, such as the Elephant Hawk Moth, are quite large and beautiful. If you are lucky (and quiet!) you may also see some nocturnal mammals, such as mice, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers.
As the sun goes down, birds such as blackbird, robin and song thrush will still be singing, whilst the first bats will be emerging from their roosts. Bats have a very different flight to birds, more fluttery, and with frequent changes of direction, as they search out insects using echolocation. A bat detector, which converts the bats’ inaudible (to us) signals into sounds, is a good way of identifying which species you are seeing, as they each have different calls.
Wildlife watching can be combined with other activities, such as star gazing and marshmallow toasting, to make it a memorable occasion. You don’t need a lot of equipment; just some form of shelter and a torch (use a piece of red film to filter the light so that the wildlife is less disturbed). For more of a group activity, you could join in with events planned at RSPB reserves, where you are more likely to see and experience
a variety of wild creatures, with experts on hand to help. This year, RSPB Fairburn Ings reserve near Castleford is planning an event on Saturday 28th July which will include a bushcraft session, den building, night-time wildlife walks, moth trapping and late night astronomy. The Puffin must be one of the most widely recognised birds in Britain – and one of the most loved. With its oversize multi-coloured bill, red and black eye markings and bright red legs, it can seem comical and clown-like. We mostly see birds around the UK coast in the breeding months – April to July – when large numbers flock to the favoured nesting sites. They excavate a nesting burrow in the soil, sometimes making use of old rabbit burrows, defend this site and use it in subsequent years. Puffins only lay one egg, which is incubated by both parents, who also share the feeding until the chick is ready to fledge. Young Puffins fledge at night, to avoid predators, and make their way to the sea alone, as the adults will have deserted the nest shortly before. The mystery of where Puffins go in Winter has been solved in the last few years by using geolocator tags attached to the birds. These have revealed that three quarters of birds from North Sea colonies actually head

out into the Atlantic for up to three months before returning to the North Sea. The reason for this is unclear but may relate to food supply. The best place to see Puffins (and other seabirds) in Yorkshire is the RSPB Bempton Cliffs reserve, near Bridlington, where you can also go on Puffin Cruises to get up close to these lovely birds. Mix about 5 tablespoons of sugar with 200ml water and 5 tablespoons of lemon juice in a pan, bring to the boil and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture become syrupy in texture. Blitz about 400g raspberries in a food processor until smooth, then sieve to remove seeds and bits. Add the syrup little by little until you are happy with the taste then pour the mixture into lolly moulds and freeze.
Make sure pots and baskets don’t dry out – they often need water even if it has rained as the dense plantings can stop the water getting to the soil. Don’t forget to give those container plants a liquid feed once a week too. pots and

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY DIRECTED BY: RON HOWARD STARRING: ALDEN EHRENREICH, EMILIA CLARKE, WOODY HARRELSON, DONALD GLOVER CERT: 12A RUNNING TIME: 135 MINS This second stand-alone Star Wars story, after the surprisingly satisfying Rogue One, completes its somewhat tortured journey to the screen with reliable Ron Howard at the helm after Phil Lord and Chris Miller (of The Lego Movie fame) were unceremoniously relieved of directing duties mid-way through production. This personnel-change set alarm bells ringing, with some thinking this indicated Disney/Lucasfilm had lost their nerve for taking risks with the franchise by entrusting the box office juggernaut to unexpected filmmakers.
Yet Solo isn’t half the mess its convoluted origin story suggests it could’ve been. Seasoned journeyman Howard is about as steady a hand you could find to right a troubled ship and the result is a perfectly serviceable, often fun, if ultimately underwhelming romp. The deal with these ‘stand-alones’ is that, while taking place within the Star Wars universe, they’re not in the business of servicing the grand narrative of the main episodic Skywalker saga. As such, there are no mystical musings on the nature of ‘The Force’ and nary a lightsaber in sight. Instead, we have an introduction to and backstory for one of this universe’s best loved and most engaging characters, Han Solo. We first meet Han (played by Hail Caesar scene-stealer, Alden Ehrenreich) and his love interest Qi’ra (Mother of Dragons herself, Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke) on a grim planet pulling scams while toiling for a local crime boss. When they’re separated during their daring escape, Han signs up for a stint in the Empire’s military hoping to live his dream of becoming a pilot. Instead, he finds himself a hapless soldier, crossing paths on the battlefield with a band of swashbuckling outlaws led by Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and his wife, Val (an underused Thandie Newton). Han ingratiates himself with this team and, before you know it, they’re collaborating on train robbery – but not before he’s become acquainted with his hirsute future co-pilot Chewbacca in an amusing meet-cute that sets up this most famous of inter-galactic bromances. In due course Han and Qi’ra are reunited, but in the intervening years she’s fallen in with the villainous Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany) who strongarms our heroes into hijacking some hyperfuel for him … or something? To be honest, the plot here is largely incidental and not worth overly concerning yourself with. As is often the case with this type of movie, the narrative is less a coherent storyline than a set piece delivery system nudging you from one action scene to the next. Which is

Ehrenreich has enough charm and charisma to just about carry the picture but is perhaps upstaged by Donald Glover as Han’s frenemy Lando Calrissian, from whom he obtains the iconic Millennium Falcon. Special mention must also go to Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge whose motion-capture performance as Lando’s freedom fighting droid buddy, L3-37, is one of the film’s highlights. In fact, the relationship between Lando and L3 has more emotional resonance than the supposed central love story.
fine. The more important function of Solo and seemingly the other Star Wars Stories is to tickle the nostalgia centre in the brains of longtime franchise fans. In this respect, it succeeds, with enough “So that’s where that comes from!” and “Hey! It’s that guy!” moments to placate the Comic-Con hordes.
As stand-alone stories go, Solo seems a solid, good- enough entry but falls short of the high bar set by The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. Whether the sequelteasing aspects will come to fruition remains to be seen but, for now, this is a decent enough way to kill time while we wait for Episode IX.

Everything is happily falling into place for the JazzLeeds Festival, which takes place from 19th – 24th July at the Wardrobe, Leeds College of Music, The Carriageworks, Seven Arts and Millennium Square. Showcasing Leeds musicians and stories, the festival features three particular Leeds celebrations – the life of Leeds punk jazz sax player Xero Slingsby, a play about Studio 20, and the writing of the Queens Suite by Duke Ellington, following his meeting the Queen in Leeds sixty years ago – with an all-star ‘Ellingtonians’ band. There’s also Busk Stops in Leeds City Centre, The Otley Jazz Run from Headingley through Hyde Park, Fusebox Presents with Leeds free improvisers, and lots of marquee jazz names like Soweto Kinch, Ian Shaw, Nerija with Nubia Garcia and Shirely Tetteh, Chris Batchelor’s Pigfoot, and two days of jazz in Millennium Square featuring bands such as Ubunye. In total there will be over 300 performers and 50 bands taking part, including big bands, swing dance bands, traditional jazz, blues and Latin groups. The label is committed to a local DIY ethos and aims to provide a platform to emerging talent from the growing alternative, electronic, and post-rock scene. As its first release, Sixteen Records put out compilation album ‘Volume 1’ featuring new and established local electronic artists. Sixteen’s first release is similarly committed to giving a voice to female musicians and addressing the gender imbalance in the music industry. Over twelve tracks, Volume 1 showcases the eclecticism of the contemporary electro scene. Drummachines underscore synths and reverb-heavy
disembodied vocals on ethereal opening track ‘Spring’, Jazz chords accompany the hip-hop flavoured ‘Orange Sky’, while ‘Cinnamon’ combines cowbell and a funk bassline with addictively danceable results. ‘Havoc’ builds early, before fading through an array of tones and effects to silence which fades into album closer ‘Eventually I’ll Catch Fire’. Sixteen have followed Volume 1 with the release of Luna Pines debut EP, ‘The House We Lived in’. A meditative set of electronica and refined dream pop mixed with ambient, post-rock echoes and Cocteau Twins inspired melodies. With more releases from artists featured on Volume 1 scheduled throughout the year, Sixteen Records is promoting some of the best that Leeds has to offer and working hard to develop the scene locally and nationally. Sounds of Back to Basics Dance music legends Robin S, Utah Saints and Alison Limerick will headline ‘The Symphonic Sounds of Back to Basics’, featuring the Orchestra of Opera North, in Millennium Square on Friday 27th July. This year’s collaboration between Dave Beer’s Leeds club and Opera North’s 50-piece symphony orchestra will turn the clocks back to the early '90s, when new waves of US dance music hit the UK and home-grown musicians and producers responded with hard-hitting sounds of their own. Robin S is best known for her chart-topping classic Show Me Love, which will reach new heights in Millennium Square with a full symphonic makeover. DJ and sampling pioneers Utah Saints’ huge sound is about to get even bigger for this Summer’s reunion with the Basics crew. Alison Limerick’s 1990 debut single Where Love Lives defines the house anthem right from its opening chords and continues to influence the sound of club music today.
Shades of Rhythm add the sound of rave to the mix, with their early-90s hits Sweet Sensation and Sound of Eden getting an orchestral overhaul. Saffron (lead singer/songwriter for N-Joi & Republica) will take centre stage with a mash-up of her hit singles Anthem and Ready to Go. Chicago house royalty Robert Owens is back for 2018 and British gospel and house singer Rachel McFarlane will perform Let the Music Lift you Up, and Lover, which was mashed up with Paul Van Dyk’s For an Angel to become a late-90s white label sensation. Also back from last year are Jazz and broken beat vocalist Sara Garvey, Adetoun Rattenbury, Sabrina Ramikie and Jaz Ellington – who will perform an array of club and electronica anthems. The event will be presented by Dave Beer, with DJ sets from Ralph Lawson, Tristan Da Cunha and James Holroyd. Irish Arts Celebrates a Musical Crossover

In the last 20 years, traditional Irish Music has gained recognition on an international scale and captured attention everywhere. It has long been considered that Galician and Asturian music owe their roots to the Celtic history of the region, with some of this ancient influence surviving, despite the evolution of local music traditions. Much modern, commercial Galician and Asturian traditional music is strongly influenced by modern Irish, Scottish and Welsh folk styles. In the 1980s and ‘90s performers began to win recognition both in Spain and on the international Celtic music scene. These included Anxo Lorenzo, Ruben Bada and Leticia Gonzales who the Irish Arts Foundation is delighted to bring to Leeds.
The Anxo Lorenzo Trio will appear at HEART in Headingley on Thursday 5th July, 8pm. Lorenzo plays the gaita, the traditional Galician bagpipe. He is one of Galicia’s most inspired fusioneers, mixing and matching his vibrant native traditions with everything from electronica to flamenco. PWYF (Pay What You Feel) Ruben Bada & Leticia González play Inkwell Arts, Potternewton Lane, LS7 on Saturday 21st July, 7pm. They are two of the most exciting artists performing in Galicia and Asturias at the moment. Ruben plays guitar, bouzouki and fiddle. He has recorded
numerous high-profile albums, including John McSherry & Dónal O’Connor’s album ‘Tripswitch’ and John McSherry’s ‘Soma’. Leticia González is best known for her work as a solo artist and member of the Asturian vocal group Mujeres. She has wowed audiences at festivals across Europe. She is a leading exponent of the Panderu (The Asturian tambourine) and the Castanets. The evening will be introduced with music and a short lecture by traditional Irish musician Michael Walsh, who is currently doing a PhD researching flute playing and national identity in the contemporary Asturian folk scene.

R3C0VRY.WRX, a website for people in recovery from drug and alcohol addictions set up by 5 WAYS, the Leeds hub for people in recovery, has launched a new online magazine. Members of 5 WAYS wanted a means to publish not only their own work, but also that of others in the recovery community in Yorkshire and beyond.
The all-new Colour Run for Martin House Hospice is on Sunday 15th July. The event has had a revamp for 2018 and will now be held at Bramham Park with even more paint stations! You can run, walk or dance your way around the 3.5km route. Starting out in bright white T-shirts, everyone will end up a kaleidoscope of colour, as they pass through the pink, red, yellow, purple, orange, blue and green paint stations. There will be a full warm-up before the run, and the route is also wheelchair and pushchair accessible. “Our Colour Run is a great event for people to have fun as families”, said Ellie Barker, events Martin House fundraiser, “whilst also raising money so other families who need our support, can have time together to make special memories.”
Martin House cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families, from across West, North and East Yorkshire. As well as providing care at its hospice, it supports families in their own homes. Registration for the Colour Run costs £20 for adults, £10 for children(5 – 15 yrs), £50 for a family (two adults, two children), and £15 per adult for groups of ten or more. Health&Fitness Leeds Modernians Determined to Increase Participation Leeds Modernians Rugby Football Club in Cookridge and Rugby Union Need You! A Sport England Active People Survey showed that the number of adults playing Rugby Union at least once a week has declined dramatically in the last decade. This isn’t unique to Rugby Union, there has been a year on year drop in sports participation by the adult population in general and the negative effects on health and wellbeing are obvious. Rugby Union has been played at Modernians for over 60 years and the Club’s 1st team plays in Yorkshire 3, with a 2nd team playing competitive merit table rugby every weekend. Like many amateur clubs, Modernians has seen a gradual reduction in player numbers, resulting in cancelled fixtures and keen players losing interest. Players whose games were cancelled tried to find other local teams at short notice and offered to play for them, which has helped other clubs avoid cancelations.
Modernians are keen to stop this decline and promote increased participation for all ages, for both social and league rugby. They aim to increase the number of playing teams and allow senior members to develop a veterans’ team
that can run out as regularly as possible. They want to grow rugby in North Leeds and encourage players from other clubs to help rival teams out by participating for the good of the game. So, they need your help! They are urging as many people as possible to become active, even if it’s just for fitness training purposes, social engagement at a great club, or as full playing members. To get started, join them for Summer Training with accredited coaches, starting Tuesday 4thJuly, 7pm at the club, on Cookridge Lane, LS16 7ND. The wider club also offers cricket, football and a thriving junior rugby league section. There is an active social calendar, bar and function rooms. No matter what your age or ability, even if you have never played before but would love to give it a go, contact the club and find out how you can get involved in helping to drive up participation in North Leeds. School at NSPCC Awards The NSPCC’s Childhood Champion Awards recognise the valuable contribution made by NSPCC volunteers and celebrate those who go the extra mile. The Grammar School at Leeds was named as an Outstanding School of the Year and received a certificate signed by The Countess of Wessex, the NSPCC’s patron.
Girls from Sixth Roundhay Brownies recently joined 2,000 girls at Girlguiding’s biggest event for girls aged five to ten at Waddow Hall, Girlguiding’s activity centre near Clitheroe, for a weekend of Magic and Mayhem. The girls tried a range of exciting activities spread across five zones - science, circus, dance, activity and fun, which included climbing, archery, fencing, juggling, magic and science experiments. “It’s so important for girls to have opportunities to experience the outdoors, have fun and challenge themselves to try things that they wouldn’t get the chance to do elsewhere”, said Anna McNuff, Girlguiding UK ambassador. “Magic and Mayhem is the
perfect place for this and I loved seeing the girls really embrace the various challenges, from scaling the heights on the climbing wall to taking on the assault course. This is what Girlguiding is all about, supporting girls to have the confidence to try new things, to take on challenges and ultimately seek out adventure.” Girlguiding gives girls opportunities to have fun and adventure, gain life skills and make friends. Magic and Mayhem is the second of three weekend events to be held at Girlguiding’s activity centres in Hampshire, Sussex and Lancashire during 2018. Younger Life City Varieties Youth Theatre Heads for Emerald City Many of us remember the first time we saw the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland, a magical journey over the rainbow, filled with memorable songs and colourful imagery. So, when City Varieties Youth Theatre (CVYT) heard that they would be staging their own production of this classic, they were thrilled. The Wizard of Oz will be CVYT’s seventh production. This energetic group, aged eight to 17, has blossomed over the years under the direction of writer/director Lizi Patch, and supported by a team of professionals lending their
expertise to everything from choreography to musical direction. Young participants enjoy an inspiring experience that values teamworking and ensemble work, and several members have been inspired to continue pursuing their artistic development. Many have progressed on to Leeds Actors in Training (LAIT) a pilot training project for 18 – 25 year olds, who are about to stage their inaugural production – David Lane’s ‘I Am England’ – at Seven Arts on Friday 6th July. SAA-UK Indian Music Summer School South Asian Arts (SAA-uk) will hold its 20th Indian Music Summer School from Friday 28th July – Friday 3rd August at Khalsa Science Academy in Alwoodley. Launching in Leeds in 1998, the SAA-uk Summer School was the first of its kind in the UK, offering an opportunity for people to learn Indian music through vocal training and a variety of traditional instruments, including Tabla, Sitar, Santoor and Tanti Saaj. The School offers a safe, supportive, inclusive and nurturing environment for both children and adults, encouraging acceptance and celebration of the diversity of South Asian culture. The classes are taught by some of the world’s most respected Indian Classical musicians and are ideal even for beginners with an interest in exploring world music.
